I will drain pour a beer if I strongly dislike it. Life is too short and, while I'm not wealthy, I can afford a lot of beer.

I drink the ones I don't like, but not for monetary reasons. I punish myself with these beers to reinforce buying smart next time. Sometimes a bad purchase could be avoided with more consideration on my part.

If a place has 10 taps and 5 are ipas maybe they'd be better off going to 5 taps and putting their efforts into 1 kick-ass ipa

Meh. I'm starting to get disillusioned with NEIPAs again. The majority of ones I try are watery yeast bombs. Or too sweet. I've even been disappointed in some of the super hyped ones, liked Equilibrium. I think the majority of craft pilsners I've tried are better than many NEIPAs.

I seem to prefer the ones that have some haze/juiciness to them, but not a "true to style" NEIPA. Some of the "legit" ones have had a chemical burn taste to me which other people call bitterness. On the other hand, M43's very limited strawberry variant was heavenly, and I believe they're true to style. So maybe it's a bit of certain breweries still figuring it out.

Precisely. I've noticed that I tend to gravitate towards IPAs that are neither quite West Coast nor quite New England, the sort of in-between ones. For example, one of my top favorite DIPAs last year was Firestone Walker Leo v. Ursus Adversus, which was unfiltered and brewed with wheat and oats, yet it wasn't a completely murky juice bomb, either. It was a big, well-made, clean, awesomely hoppy DIPA that took some cues from NEIPAs but was in its own league. If you had that beer you'll know what I'm talking about.

Funny I think we have come to the proper place to realize how difficult it is to do the style right. At one point folks were saying the style is all about shortcuts for brewers, and an easier way of brewing, which those of us who'd used Conan and late hop techniques in home brewing knew was bullshit. Now we see the same folks who could make a respectable WCIPA, because it's fucking easy to do, can't make a decent NEIPA, 'cause it's hard to do. I hope the ones making it like crap just... stop.

I too like that sweet spot of a nice bit of bitter in one that is soft, but not watery, viscous but refreshing, lots of late hop goodness but not chunky, low carb. but not flat, nice peachy yeast note but not doughy, and totally hidden ABV in an 8% DIPA.

I think I’ve said it before - possibly even in this thread - but I’d like to reiterate my loathing for the term “World Class”

Huh, really? Must be a personal thing.

World class means "in class with the best of the world". I am willing to wager that terms you recommend to replace that one are less descriptive and accurate interpretations of the user's meaning.

Hoping to be proven wrong, actually, so have at it.

Yes, twice before, but with a thread this size and long-running, I bet several of us have repeated ourselves.

Exactly. So it’s fine to use if we’re talking about a pilsner - as big chunks of the world also brew one.

But for a lacto DDH IPA with added strawberries (which is slightly cynical, but closer to the BA use case) - not so much. I’m not offering an alternative (beyond “very good” or “excellent” - those usually get the message across)

Sort of like whoever wins the World Cup this summer can reasonably refer to themselves as world champions, but when I see a player from the Super Bowl winning team screaming “we’re the world champions!” into the camera, I struggle a little.

I just wanted to pop in get a bunch of people upset.

Last night I went in to renew my mug club at one of my favorite spots.

    I tipped on the total.

So your favorite IPA is Alpha King because it's brewed halfway between new england and California?
