Was in the Middle East this week in a major/modern city - one that is relatively progressive given Muslim rules around alcohol - i.e. alcohol permissible in western hotels and by license to expats only via gov controlled outlets. Most hotels have a line up that goes like this - Bud and BL, Heineken, and Becks. You might be able to get Guinness and Hoegarden in one of the Hotel restaurants if you are lucky - and I’ve seen a few other odd ball Belgiun and Japanese brews on occasion. Having my Buds this week I noticed all of the bottles were pushing a year old. When I looked at bottles of BL and Heineken they ranged from 6 to 11 months old. Not surprisingly the beers “tasted like Bud” and were well within the 14 month BB date..so I suppose I shouldn’t be complaining..... All the dist goes through a single company and I’m assuming that given the relatively limited demand - they just stockpile the stuff. In short - an absolutely god-awful beer scene (or should I say Allah-awful?). Anybody have other destinations that can compete w/this??

150+ feet beneath the surface on a fleet ballistic submarine for months.

They loosened the rules and allowed a Sharp's toward the end of my service.

Scott, a number of years ago I was on a business trip to Amman, Jordon and at the hotel (Marriott I think?) the bars had Amstel on draft and that beer was brewed locally.

    Below is from Wikipedia:

“In 1958, the first Amstel beer factory outside The Netherlands was established in Amman.[1]”

I have had a couple of Amstel Light beers in the States which I thought were OK (e.g., I liked them better than BMC light beers). I thought the Amstel 'heavy' beers in Jordan were pretty good. That is what I drank during my week+ visit to Jordan for business.

    Cheers!

Not sure about now, but in 1998 my wife and I stayed at a jungle resort in Belize. And the only beer I could get was Belican beer, and Belican special.nothing else at all. Hopefully it has changed.

Hmm, ND, SD, and WV are awfully quiet on this thread...

I went to Niamey, Niger in Africa for two long trips in the late 80's. The embassy met us on the tarmac, gave us each a case of water, warned us not to drink anything but that water, canned Coke, or bottled beer, then escorted us past machine-gun toting airport militia. The beer selection was limited to Heineken and two local beers which apparently used clean water. I despise Heineken though the locals proudly served it to their guests. The local beers were quite bad, one was Bier Niger and I don't recall the other. I was more concerned about amoeba and parasites than flavor. Very friendly folks there, at least back then.

I also traveled to Pretoria, South Africa just days after Nelson Mandella was released from prison, and shortly before protests/rioting started. The beer and drink situation was much better there, just had to avoid tapwater - which is good advice everywhere. The beer selection was mostly regional and European, and was decent. I had a few beers and went to a theater and watched Africans watching "My Cousin Vinny". Great folks there too.

Hey - I was in the middle of writing my missive above. I sure don't have anything to complain about as far as the craft beer scene here in South Dakota. We don't export much beer, so folks assume our craft situation here is dire. Far from the truth. Breweries popping up all over, ever improving regional, national, and foreign craft distribution, and plenty of taprooms. At least in the Sioux Falls and Rapid City metroplexes.

Lousy beer, but you got steak and lobster. I ate C's, not feeling sorry here.

Most of my field destinations in the army were beer-less. Conus was awful. A cold MRE and warm canteens of water were the highlights of the day. The exception was Hohenfels Training Area in Germany.
When we got to spend time in the cantonment area for showers and resupply they had these small barracks converted to bars with a 2 beer limit. They served Tucher and it tasted absolutely wonderful while we played spades and generally complained about everything.

"Rapid City metroplex" . Oh, buddy. I enjoyed the weekend I spent in RC, back in 2000 (my Dad and I really enjoyed Firehouse brewpub, went a couple times), and, as I have weird hobby of reading small city newspapers, the Rapid City Journal is a regular stop for me. But, for all my love of the region, "metroplex" is non-applicable. A city of 70,000ish folks (not significantly smaller than my city) cannot be a metroplex.

Mostly though, I was just busting on SD and ND, cuz they're two of the last states I need for my 50 States list. Man, y'alls breweries do not ship.

Yeah, I was jesting as far as Rapid City metroplex. But...Fernson distributes to surrounding states, and their Farmhouse beer recently earned Gold in the Session Beer category of the 2018 World Beer Cup competition - though I don't care for the style myself.

I was in South Africa during the same time period. The country was in a state of euphoria & I had a great trip.

As far as beer - Castle Stout was my regular & Carling Black Label was everywhere, & was decent.

I had the opportunity to drink rudimentary “beer” in the Soweto township - tasted like sour carbonated milk - but I told them I liked it to be a good traveler.

Go to Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks, and Minot ND, and you will get good, if not grea
You can get Fargo Brewing beers throughout MN, and I've seen Fernson (SD) in Southern MN.

WV, on the other hand, I have no advice.
