    Good evening, NBS people.
It is, once again, disgustingly hot here and looks to be settling in for a week of the same. Today is Canada Day here but that doesn't mean too much here aside from the three-day weekend, as Quebec's big patriotic display was last week. There is a lot going on though due to the fact that everyone is moving (leases all expire at the same time) so things are a bit chaotic. Thankfully I am not moving, heat or no heat.
I am however planning on having a beer and hanging out on the old balcony and pretending I am in a sauna while moving as little as possible. For my beer I am going to have this Brett saison from Sutton. This one is called La Trail à Brett and was made for a group that builds and maintains trails for mountain bikes.
Their beers are all made with Brett and are damn good for the most part. Let's see about this one. Regardless, it should be a good way to rehydrate after spending all afternoon walking in 104° heat.
It pours a nice, bright brass color. The aroma is definitely more assertive than the flavor. Both are earthy and hay-like with the smell suggesting a little tartness that isn't there when you drink it. A simple, tasty beer. Maybe a little steep price-wise for what it is, but an interesting thirst-quencher nonetheless. The picture makes it look darker than it is:

Here is my review if'n you care.

    Have a great week!

    New Beer Sunday: An IPA

Evenin’ NBSers, back again with a special heads up for seekers of a solid sipper IPA with lots of citrus and resin flavors.

This evening’s new beer is the Fathom IPA from Ballast Point.

As usual, my review, subject to revision until the beer is finished, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/199/305774/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors of this IPA are hop forward, as we’d expect, but the hop aromas/flavors showcased include some orange zest along with some grapefruit and pine resin. The malt backbone provides a bit of bready caramel sweetness. I'd say this beer is a solid, well made example of the style and worth trying if you find it.

Tonight's music on the player is another collection of classics performed by my all time favorite jazz pianist, Art Tatum.

    Here’s tonight’s sample:

    Art Tatum - Danny Boy

    Cheers, all!

New beer I had to add. Sour pale ale. Awesome stuff! Solid head retention and spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of big lightly tart lemon, lime, mandarin orange, grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, red/green apple, white wine, citrus peel/zest, hay, straw, and grass; with some wheat, cracker, white bread dough malt balance; and light notes of peppercorn, pine, leathery/musty funk, white wine vinegar, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate lactic tartness, peppery Brett spice, and pine/herbal/floral/grassy hop bitterness on the finish. Medium-high carbonation, light-medium body, and moderately crisp/clean finishing. Balanced bready/grainy wheat, lactic acid, and sticky hops in the mouthfeel. Moderately increasing tart/bitter/spicy/carbonated dryness. No pucker/astringency. Very flavorful/refreshing, 5%. Not overly lactic. Mandarina Bavaria, Citra, and Ekuanot cryo hops; spot on profile. Awesomely balanced juicy/lightly dank hops, Brett/Bacteria, and pale/wheat malts against acidity. Would definitely buy again. Always really well made wild ales from Central State, this is one of the best ones I've had yet. 4.1
    [IMG]

Mini whale for me. Also got the (might be infected) Furious ginger in the cellar. WOW! Nice head retention and spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, peanut butter, vanilla, whipped cream, coconut, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, marshmallow, fudge, cake batter, bourbon, toasted oak, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of molasses, smoke, char, dark fruit, and herbal spice earthiness. Very minimal herbal/roast bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish. Light-medium carbonation and very full body; with a very creamy, silky, velvety, and rich mouthfeel that is insane! Slight sticky spice, chalky roast, oak tannins, and increasing dryness. Minimal warming 13.5%, zero barrel booze. Absolutely mind blowing stuff. Super rich base malt complexity; perfect balance of PB, coconut, vanilla, cocoa, and lactose flavorings; with perfect barrel integration. No booze/tannins. Pretty much the smoothest imperial stout I've ever had for this ABV. I need more. 4.42

Happy Sunday, BAs. I cut back on my drinking in June for health reasons, but let loose a little bit this weekend given yesterday's epic WBAYDN thread and a neighborhood BBQ this evening.

Tried a few new-to-me brews this weekend, but the one I'll write about now is the one I brought to the neighborhood Cinco de Mayo BBQ but wasn't opened until today: a crowler of Tired Hands Horchata Milkshake IPA.

It poured a murky yellow-orange-brown color with a modest off-white head.

The aroma featured tropical fruit (guava mostly) and some clear cinnamon. The taste had similarly clear cinnamon as well as a definite rice milk component, then tropical fruit behind, with a moderately bitter finish.

It was on the thick side of medium bodied. At nearly two months old, I thought it held up pretty well and left a clear horchata impression. That said, my neighbors seemed to like it more than I did.

Wish I had a picture to share with you, but this is the only beer I photographed:

    Bent Hill's "Lavendula!"
    Perfume beer?

Moderate pour yields a 1/2 inch white head over a slightly hazy golden body with scant lacing. All lavender on the nose with taste of lavender and subdued Gose characteristics. Very nice feel and overall, a nice refreshing beer, but to the German purists, this Gose might be considered an abomination. :astonished: I like it for the mouthfeel and it is refreshing as all get out. Cheers!

    Dogfish head 120 minute ipa
@dcotom inspired me to finally open this after reading his review
    ..appears cloudy orange/rust color
.. body is above average,a sort of coat your tongue feel. Very low carbonation
..Aroma to me is similar to dcotom.
    Pine,caramel,some citrus,and most definitely malt.
...Taste follows the nose, not too sweet, not too bitter at all. There's enough malt to make me almost forget it's an ipa,it has a big impact on the taste. The alcohol isn't hidden well and it really is like having a cordial
...Overall it's really well crafted, a very good beer which says a lot coming from me as I'm not an ipa fan. Would I spend a chunk of change getting another bottle? No, wasn't that blown away[IMG]

Good afternoon, NBS. Life has been hectic lately, and I am thankful for this chance to slow down for bit and share a beer with you. Today I am having the most recent iteration of Modern Times' fruited Gose, Fruitlands Rosé Edition. Canned on 6/17, 4.8% abv.

Pours a deep rose-gold. Half a finger of pink foam fades quickly to a lasting ring. Small bubbles of carbonation stream up from the bottom of the glass. Lacing is minimal. Good looking gose.

Smells of bright red tart berries, dry crackers, and salt.

Mixed red berry taste. Sweet and tart cranberry, raspberry, lemon. Toasted white bread and salty crackers follow. Fruity and tart with the salinity restrained. Aftertaste is initially very fruity, giving way to a lingering salty toasty bread flavor which is quite delicious.

Mildly puckering, somewhat sweet, and very crisp. Spritzy, easy-drinking, and refreshing. I'm not much of a wine drinker, so I can't say how this compares to actual rosé, but I can say it's my new favorite Fruitlands variant. This will be great in the summer heat.

The hot weather is yet to come here. We've still got the June gloom marine layer that burns off around noon. No one tell it we're in July now. Took the dog to the beach earlier. This is below Fort MacArthur. Bunkers at the top of the cliff, Catalina Island in the distance.

    Cheers, everyone!

Having greenbush brewings distorter porter. It's roasty, some black coffee flavor. Not a lot of complexity. It's not bad, but doesn't get my attention in a big way. Still glad I tried it. Others will surely enjoy it, just not to my taste.

I’m on vacation in Rochester, NY from northwest TN visiting my parents. I’ve gotta say I was really disappointed having some of the beers up here. I put them on a pedestal just because of the notoriety they receive. Sip of sunshine had to be the most disappointing. Not to say it was bad at all because I gave it between a 4 and 4.25 but I was expecting immediate orgasm for some reason. Bearded iris in Nashville is doing the NEIPA game as good as the guys up here and that’s somewhat comforting to know that I’m not missing out. Anyway here’s a good brew I had today

    Money IPA from Barrier

Pours a straw yellow with a golden hue with an inch and a half of eggshell colored head leaving glorious lacing all the way up the glass which clings drink after drink.

Aroma is grapefruit, ripe melons, and pineapple

Taste is ripe melon, one dimensional and very soft. I love the flavor but it just drops off a cliff and leaves you wanting more immediately after your last sip

Mouthfeel is medium, smooth, and silky

    Overall a good IPA

Moderate pour yields a 6/4 inch white head over a bright amber body with little lacing. Nose of a proper Gose, but the flavors are different from all previous examples of the style due to its unique ingredients:

"Our Ur-Gose is a revival of the old Märzen-Gose style, but with new twists: to the traditional barley, wheat and oat malts and coriander we add Swiss Stone Pine cones, fine Ceylon Cinnamon, and smoked salt from the thousand-year-old Halle saltworks near the brewery. Finally, extra doses of aromatic Hallertauer Perle and bittering Taurus hops round out this unique Märzen-Gose."

As the beer warms the cinnamon comes out fully on the nose with some of the pine cone as well on the nose, taste, and finish. Wow! Mouthfeel is topnotch and overall, a real special Gose right here folks. Cheers!

Greetings from hot and muggy Tennessee! We moved recently (across town) and I'm happy to make it into NBS tonight after missing the last few weeks. Hopefully things will settle back to normal soon! As I was moving my modest beer "cellar" (read: closet) to the new place this week, I realized that I had stowed away one of last year's Sierra Nevada "Across the World" Beer Camp offerings, the Fuller's Vintage Ale brewed with plums. Seemed like the perfect new beer today!

I liked this one. A slightly hazy amber-orange color with a thick and long-lasting white head. The plums were front and center on the aroma. A pleasant and bright fruity presence that was met with nice floral notes and a slightly sweet malty presence. The plums also led the charge on the palate, but were restrained and again met with a hefty dose of caramel, toffee, and bread. There was a subtle floral presence, presumably from the English yeast. Smooth, nearly full-bodied, and soft on the finish. I'm glad that I sat on this one for a year. Cheers!

Hey all, late night NBS check in here. Thanks for getting things rolling this AM @cjgiant despite feeling under the weather. Hope you feel better soon.

As for me, it’s been a pretty uneventful week, just trying to stay cool like everyone else. Fortunately, we’ve all got cold beer to help out with that! That brings me to why I’m here- new beers! My first tonight probably isn’t the best to beat the heat, but I’m cooling off in AC right now. So, I can pretend it’s winter while I enjoy this BA Imperial Stout from Fulton, Worthy Adversary aged in Port& Madeira barrels-

This came in a 4 pack of 4 different BA beers and after trying this one I can’t wait to try the other 3. Here’s my review-

    4.29/5 rDev -0.7%
    look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.5

    Canned 3/28/18, consumed today

Look- dark brown bordering on black with a tan head that recedes to a thin ring around the edge of the glass. no lacing.

Smell- boozy prunes and dark cherries (I'm guessing this is from the port/madeira barrels), dark chocolate and slightly burnt roasty note

Taste- follows the nose somewhat with the chocolate and burnt roasty notes, but the barrel presents itself here as a rich boozy full on port taste the sort of envelopes the roasty notes, but amplifies them rather than overshadowing them. It's sort of like drinking a booze-soaked dark chocolate covered cherry that's barely sweet

Feel- slick feeling, medium thick body with low carbonation that coats the mouth; long finish that leaves the mouth slightly numbed from booze

Overall- really enjoyable BA Imperial Stout where the port/madeira flavors from the barrel serve to enhance the base flavors of the malt

Back for some more Late Night NBS action!

And todays new brew is yet another collaboration, this time between Magnify and Sand City, Oops! I Hopped Your Hotel Room!

Poured into a 19oz Nucleated Hoppy Beer Glass -

Magnify piggy backed off of Sand City's Opps! Series and created a 7% IPA DDH with Mosaic and Topaz.

Everyone knows Mosaic but Topaz not so much.

The aroma on this one smells like straight chronic! Its Dank, Herbal, Leafy, Grassy and earthy with notes of pine citrus and a slight funk.

Taste follow the nose pretty much exactly but with a more pronounced bitterness.

Body is med and has a dry finish.

This beer is awesome! I can totally taste Sand Citys influence on this one

    Cheers!

Y'know, it's funny you should say that; I'm drinking the back-end of the beer and getting a little "bored" with it - but it's my second orange-forward beer of the day, and that's not my favorite thing, so I dropped a bit of this bourbon into the glass just to shake things up...
