Next up is Mikkeller Mosaic Black IPA.

The appearance is pitch black with a creamy tan head. Good retention, with lots of sticky lacing.

The aroma is an even balance of pine, dark malts, and dark fruits. Pine sap, black coffee, smoke, burnt toast; and then prune, raisin, and black cherry.

The flavor offers tons of plump and juicy dark fruits--plum, black cherry, raisin, black currant, and dates. The malt is the roasted and burnt end of the dark malt spectrum--no caramel or chocolate to be found here. Just burnt toast, coffee grounds, and wood smoke. Finishes mildly bitter with burnt malts, smoke, and pine.

Overall, a fantastic black IPA. I hope this is indicative of a resurgence in the style.

Moderate pour yields a 1/2 inch tan head over a very dark brown body with some sticky lacing. Nose of chocolate, vanilla, roasted malt, oak, and slight whiskey. Flavors mirror aromas nicely with milk chocolate, bitter chocolate, and whiskey in the forefront and vanilla and caramel in there as well. Really nice chewy feel and overall a beauty of a stout right here.
    Cheers to Henniker!

I’ve got one last new one for today- Fulton Worthy Adversary aged in cognac barrels. This came in a 4 pack that had 4 different Fulton BA beers in it, and this is the 2nd one I’ve had. They’re two for two, so far. Great beer here-

Canned on date smudged, but it was sometime earlier this year

Look- pitch black with a thin tan head; a few random spots of lacing

Aroma- dark and milk chocolates, a little smoke, dark fruit (prunes?) and a little cognac

Taste- getting the slightly sweet milk and bitter dark chocolates, very mild woody smoke, dark fruit and slightly sweet cognac all coming together very nicely with no one flavor dominating; also getting a little booziness and a moderate bitterness that balances out the sweetness of the beer

Feel- thick-bodied with a long, bitter finish, along with some alcohol heat

Overall- outstanding BA Imperial Stout in which the malt flavors blend amazingly with the cognac flavors

    Happy NBS

Having Finback Once Twice Three Times a Whale DIPA

Pours an incredibly murky deep orange color with not light being allowed to shine through. Smells like theres Galaxy in there with a deep orange/herbal danky pithy taste. But it's actually highly saturated with Citra according to finback. Their hazy yeast strain could be contributing to that bit of spice now that I think of it.

All in all it's an awesome NE style DIPA full of tropical fruit and dank herbs.

    Cheers!

I'm probably being a little hard on it. There are no off flavors or anything unpleasant. I haven't tried a lot of barleywines, but I tend to hold others to the standard of bells third coast aged 2-3 years. That's the best I've tried to my taste. I also liked bigfoot fresh, which was hoppier. I practically chugged that six pack, big surprise to me.

Bummer. I'd imagine that didn't hold up too well. Hope that wasn't your first impression of Fieldwork cuz they make some phenomenal stuff. Cheers.

One more addition, to the late night NBS. A beer both new to me and BA. Urban Roots (soon to be, if not already, on the must hit list for Sacramento) has some solid brews and slow-smoked BBQ. This beer is a hazy tropical APA called Hey Friend! Pour is a 2-hour old crowler into a tulip.

L: Pours murky orange bronze with 1 finger of medium density white head with limited retention and left slight spotted lacing.

S: Very pleasant and tropical, lots of mango, papaya, and guava. Underlying citrus.

T: Follows the nose but with more citrus prominence. Enjoyable, but was hoping it would follow the nose more truly. Finished with mild bitterness and some astringency, clears palate fairly quickly but astringency lingers.

F: Moderate body with medium carbonation, some tongue burn from carbonation and astringency, silky on the swallow.

O: Its a nice tropical hazy APA. Softening up the mouthfeel a bit and I'd likely grab a pour of this frequently, but as is I'll repeat now and then.

    BA score = 3.95

Maybe, but a quick glance at other reviews here show a less than enthusiastic response from others. The beer just clicked with me. Cheers.
