I'm just a spectator this week, as I have to prepare for a "screening procedure" tomorrow. Great posts so far. Cheers!

    Iron Hill Captain Crush

Happy Sunday, BAs. Iron Hill has a small chain of brewpubs in the Philly area that make a couple excellent beers and a lot of mediocre ones.

If I had noticed the "Philly Special" or "Underdog" beers on their wall beer list before I was leaving, I would have tried one or both of those for NBS. Going off their printed menu, I ordered this take on a NEIPA.

A murky pulped-peach color, it had a fat finger of dense off-white head that left decent lacing that I quite enjoyed looking at. The glassware was pretty cool, too.

Pineapple starburst, orange, cream and distant herbs showed in the nose. The taste was similar, featuring overripe tropical fruit, orange creamsicle, vanilla and a very light, dully bitter finish that prevented too much residual sweetness.

It had a full, creamy feel with a little burst of carbonation upon swallowing.

It's not bad. I don't expect to ever see people lining up to get this in cans, but it's definitely in the upper tier of IPAs I've had from Iron Hill. (Their beers I really like are an RIS and a Tripel.). Cheers!

    No story, just beer.

Crowler canned a week ago fresh from brewery. Poured into tulip.
Aggressive pour leads to about a fingers worth of dirty brown, dingy, with sort of rose highlights.
The nose is soft tropical fruit but not much else.
Guava, banana, pine light bitterness in the taste. Unfortunately very muted flavors.
Low carbonation but I understand that it’s a crowler with some bubble loss. Creamy mouthfeel. Just an okay hazy IPA. 3.46

    Hopefully be back later!

It has been my experience across northern Europe- particularly Scandinavia- that they speak English better than a great many Americans. But some of the Scottish brogues can be a challenge. But I dearly love them!

Re the categorization. I agree that the Champagne Yeast doesn't get you into the wild ale category, there are other beers categorized here that use Champagne yeast that don't get put into the Wild Ale. Given that it comes from Allagash I'd nominate it for the Belgian Pale Ale category (which is where Brooklyn Local 1 with Champagne yeast wound up). But another category to consider is the Biere Brut. That's where Infinium (with Champagne yeast) from BBC and Weihenstephaner wound up.

Good evening NBS and Thanks @cjgiant for the am startup. Now that I am back cooking Sunday has once again become my "Saturday". Went to grab a new beer today and had one in hand then spied this one and had to grab it. I would like to say great minds think alike but I dont think I would put myself in that category. Our host today pretty much nailed the way I feel about this beer but l will give my quick take on this.
Allagash Brewing Two Lights. Beer brewed with sauvignon blanc must and fermented with lager and champagne yeast.
Pours a very pale straw with a quite a large snow white head and large soapt bubbles, settling after a few to a thin ring leaving some "world map" lacing.
Immediately after popping the top a prosecco -like aroma hits followed by some cereal/lager qualities, fresh cht grass and hay. I too get some herbal qualities- bruised thyme.
Taste follows with the white grape, some tartness and and I do get juicy pear as well, that gets less sweet as the beer warms. Grass, hay and herbs and lemon zest.
Snappy tiny bubble carbonation finishing on the dry side with the light body.
Overall its a beer I am glad I bought a 4 pack of. I really dig wine barrel aged beers and I have to wonder what a little time in a white wine barrel would do to this. A little oak would really add to the complexity IMHO. Thats my take folks and Thanks Craig for your excellent review. Seems you enjoyed it also. Peace![IMG]

Lostforty Brewing, Nighty Night, 10.5 ABV, Imperial Stout aged in rye whiskey, bourbon and Cabernet barrels, pours an opaque black with khaki head, dissipates to ring, smells sweet, wine, fruits, the carbenet is adding a nice touch, very well brewed stout that I'd highly recommend! Outstanding and thanks to @jdell15 from NBS BIF 7, good guy.

Pours a pitch black coloration with a tiny, fizzy head. Smells of roasted malt and coffee, with a hint of licorice and smoke.

Taste follows the nose, being dominated by roasted malt and coffee, with lighter notes of cocoa, licorice, leather and a certain earthy, herbal/spicey rye note. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some licorice lingering in the aftertaste. Thin mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and very low carbonation.

Very nicely balanced smoked rye Stout brewed with coffee and cocoa. Perhaps a little light on the smokiness, but with a very nice herbal/spicey rye note, complemented by a good bitterness. Shame the mouthfeel is a little light, but still a very nice brew.

Yes - I would've probably gone with BPA, except the beer uses two yeast strains - the champagne and the lager yeast, which would probably tend to put it on the lager side. I like the idea of Biere Brut - but by the end, the lager side was sorta showing its chops (lager yeast is listed first by Allagash in all the descriptions, though I don't know that there's a standard for that necessarily meaning it's the primary).

Happy Sunday, fellow New Beer Swiggers and Commentators. It's a perfect hot, humid sunny July afternoon in New Jersey. Two weeks ago, my brother-in-law and his family, who live in Michigan and Ohio, spent the week at our shore house. When I arrived there on Friday afternoon, I found the fridge stocked with lots of Michigan and Ohio beer, including many I haven't had before. This is Post Card, a 7.2% sour IPA from Urban Artifact Brewing in Cincinnati. My wife and I spent a weekend in the Queen City last September and visited several breweries but I missed this one so I was excited to receive several of its offerings.

When freshly poured and cold, Post Card is dominated by sour citrus but as the glass warms I'm noticing more sweetness and a touch of cracker malt, as well. It's a tasty and enjoyable brew. Here's my full review:

A little less than two months old when reviewed. Poured from 12 oz. can into Spiegelau IPA glass. It pours a cloudy golden-orange color with a half finger of foamy, bright-white head that faded slowly leaving some soapy lacing inside the glass. It has an aromatic smell of tangerine, onion, lemon, and sweet malt with light floral hops. It's most definitely sour and features puckeringly tart lemon, tangerine, and grapefruit with a dose of bitter Mosaic and Mandarina hops. It presents a nice combination of tart citrus and bitter hops. It features lively carbonation and is crisp and refreshing with a surprisingly potent 7.2% ABV. This IPA really grew on me as I sipped it. It's a really nice beer to drink on a hot summer's day.

I'll be back shortly with a stout. I hope you're all enjoying your new beer(s) today. As always, the posts are fun to read!

Awesome! Glad to read another opinion from a familiar face, as it were - especially one that confirms my thoughts so I know I'm not crazy. I definitely liked it, and am considering grabbing another four pack if there is still some available next time I hit the beer store. Cheers!

Yeah I see now that there's lager yeast involved. Missed the significance of that.

IIRC the lager yeast would be primary and the champagne yeast is used later after the ABV goes up a bit.

Here's an interesting description of how Champagne yeast is used in beer and why.

    Well Hello NBS Faithful!
Thanks to @cjgiant for the, as usual, thought provoking start.
I am in that boat, or maybe more like in that barge. I have way to much beer in my "inventory." And in this weather, I rarely hit it cuz most of it's pretty big guns, Impy stouts and barleywines. I have been going through some of my lambics, berlinners, and other fruity beers. The weather has been VERY cooperative for their demise in my glass.

But, I'm finally (to the utter relief of my dear wife) pulling the plug on the Bruery's Hoarder's Society. I've been a member for a few years now. I even pimped out the benefits to others twice, but I feel it's time to walk away. Kinda sad, I DO love the local perks, particularly getting to compete in Bruery blending events. Those are a friggin' blast. I told the wife I may try to pimp it out again, but she correctly points out that it still takes time facilitating the pick up and shipping of beers. So, again, I'm vacillating.

Anywhoo, it's been hot here, and I mean hot WITH humidity! I know many of you are like, "Shut Up, Baby! We deal with humidity every summer!" But it seems like we're getting more heat+humidity combos than ever. And God knows fires are popping up all over.

I'm prepping to take the wife and kids up for a few days in the eastern Sierras. I love it. Bringing up my kids to love the same parts of this beautiful country where I got my start. It's a short trip, but our summer has been soon fargin' short I swear that even as a teacher, their is some math formula that I don't have down that curves time during the summer to mess with us.

Anyway, speaking of liter, crisper hot weather drinks, I just tried this underwhelming beer outta Chicagoland.

Jasmine Rice by Band of Bohemia

Light straw to yellow in hue. Very clear. Fluffy white head that quickly settles to a thin foam cap.
Smell is dry, but with an interesting (not quite tempting) floral note of what is similar to jasmine flowers. But not quite as spicy, more of a gently perfumey take.
Flavor is similar. A subdued malt bill carries some dry, almost crackers malt, that really carries the dry bitterness, along with the floral jasmine leaning flavor.
Mouthfeel is crisp, lite, and again...dry.
Overall, I'm not knocking it. It's a style I don't get excited about but I'd like to try this one with sushi to see if it rises to the occasion.

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Another typical weekend as usual for me. More busy work coming this week. Made a big new beer haul last weekend, plus more yesterday; so I have way too much stuff to review again. I was running low prior to that. Did a double laundry load to make up for missing last week. Review 7100 will be on Tuesday, and it will be Wooden Hell 2018.

    New Beer:

Very nice session IPA. Great head retention and thick lacing on the glass. Flavors of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, mango, melon, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate cracker, white bready malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Similar/muted aromas, a bit muddy. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium-high carbonation, light-medium body, and fairly crisp/clean finishing. Balanced bready/grainy malt and sticky hops in the mouthfeel; slight resins/rinds. Light-moderate increasing bitter/carbonated dryness, no hop astringency. Very flavorful/refreshing, 4.5%. Not watery at all. This was advertised as Citra/Amarillo; but it is mostly Amarillo, with underlying Citra. Very vibrant, dank, and earthy hop complexity; nice bready malt backbone, with minimal residual sweetness. Really well executed for the low ABV. 3.88
    [IMG]

Actually putting a BB dating on these now, it's about damn time! Outstanding NEIPA. Great head retention/soapy lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of big lemon, lime, orange juice, grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, blueberry, citrus zest, and light pepper/pine hops; with moderate wheat, biscuit dough, light honeyed malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Very mild pine, zesty, herbal, grassy bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body; creamy/bready/grainy malts and light sticky hops in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering bitter dryness. Super smooth soft feel, no warmth of 7%. Pretty refreshing. Absolutely spot on stuff. Mosaic/Cashmere hops are delicious. Super juicy and lightly dank hops; perfect wheat/oat/malt balance, mild residual sweetness. Best of the series yet! 4.15

    Cheers, be back in bit.

Hello, NBS. Today I'm drinking Reno As Fuck from Revision, a "hazy IPA" canned on 6/28. 23 IBUs, 8.4% abv. No picture because I can't upload due to violating Postimages' terms of use, maybe because it says "fuck" on the can? Hmm...

Pours light gold, not quite opaque. Hazy. Single finger of white head soon fades to a cap. Lacing is moderate.

Smells of bright citrus, very zesty, a little tropical.

Taste is also bright citrus. Tangelo, grapefruit, maybe a little lemon. A hint of pine. Little bitterness. Mostly juicy and fruity, with a pale malt backbone. Very little discernible alcohol flavor.

Mouthfeel is crisp, rather than soft. Good carb, easy drinking.

Far too light and refreshing for its abv. Tastes like summer in a glass.
