If you do go to Tin Bucket I recommend sharing that bottle with someone. That's a whole lot of sour! While you're there, I recommend picking up a bottle of Rusty Nail (if you like BA stouts). They had multiple bottles yesterday.

Awesome! Good to know! I'm actually spending a night in Spokane, WA prior to hitting Glacier NP where I understand it's best to bring beer with you...so I might do a bit of shopping prior to getting there. Seeing Rusty Nail actually at a bottle shop would, without your warning (thanks), have probably elicited a small but embarrassingly audible girlish shriek of childlike excitement that would no doubt have required the owner of Tin Bucket to request my ID, despite my solidly graying beard...! Thanks and cheers!

    This week's Friday update:

Whatup Everyone? How’re those dog days of summer treating you? It's been hotter than a MoMo up in PDX this week. Hope you’re staying hydrated and having fun. Sorry we missed last week; it was a fun Peach Punch weekend. Here’s your notions:

    1. Can Release Tomorrow (8.11.18) - We have a ton of Luminous 03, our strawberry sour IPA. If you like IPAs, you will love this beer. If you like sours, you will love this beer. If you like strawberries, you will love this beer. It’s got something for everyone and we have 2 monster pallets full of it for you in 16 oz cans! We also still have a pallet full of the best batch of Space Invader we’ve ever brewed. This beer won the #13 IPA in the whole country from Paste Magazine earlier this summer and has an insane amount of Galaxy hops in it!!

    3. Future Beers! - Just to give y’all a sneak peak at some cool beers coming out the rest of the month, here’s what you can look for being brewed at both locations:

NW - Coming next week, we will have Juice Box and Ripe in 16 oz cans. We also have recently brewed Mandela, Guava Mochi, Peach Punch PDX, and I Love it When You Call Me Big Papaya! These will all come out in 16 oz cans in the coming weeks. You guys get the inside scoop for signing up for our newsletter  The rest of the internets will have to wait to find this info out...

Alberta - We have some cool IPAs in the weeks to come with rad experimental new hops. With a shout-out to Outkast, we will see both Puppy Love (single hazy IPA) and Full Grown (double hazy IPA). (I’m sorry, Ms. Jackson). Lol… We also will have a cool mojito-style IPA making its way to glasses soon.

Stay cool y'all, see you soon, and we love you!! GNB Fam

As in, "A FOMO MOFO is a NO-NO."

Or, it means "peach" in Japanese.

I think it was a typo, but the other options are more entertaining, so I'm going with those.

Seems like a good place for this post, though I don't see why it couldn't go in both threads.

Just got back from PDX and I have to say that Great Notion was probably the highlight. At least beer-wise. I love the fact that they keep such a large (and impressive) tap-list. The prices are reasonable, too. Especially compared to Denver prices. The food is pretty killer, too. You guys are lucky to have a place like that.

As far as beers go, I found Wai-Iti to be the dark horse favorite of all the hazy items. Peanut Brother might not be as bold as Double Stack (and Blueberry Pancakes), but it's the only one of those heavy hitters I could drink more than one of.

GN pricing is reasonable when compared to many other parts of the country. Just not PDX. From the sounds of your post, it sounds like you went to a number of different places in PDX, but enjoyed GN the best (which is understandable, as they make very good beer).

Peach punch in your eye and vanilla latte (both 7% IPA's) are $5 for a 10.5 ounce glass. That prices out to around $8 to $8.50 for a pint. Outside of the Apex taphouse, I'm unaware of any place in town charging that much for a pint of IPA (hazy or otherwise). However, based on your post, I'm assuming most places you visited were charging that much or more? I'm assuming that's the case, if you felt GN prices were reasonable.

Out of curiosity, did you happen to pick up any cans or a crowler at GN? Can prices for GN IPA's are generally in the $18 to $20 range for a 4 pack, which is the highest price I know of in town for a 4 pack of locally brewed IPA. Crowlers start at $15, which is also the highest price I know of in town for a crowler of locally made IPA.

The rationale for GN pricing is tied to the uniqueness of the product they produce. At least that's the argument I've heard for their pricing in the past. Over time, I've grudgingly conceded they have a point. There are a lot of breweries in town that are now making high quality hazy IPA, but the adjunct hazy IPA's they make are indeed unique, and the quality level is often quite high. It's not always something I'm in the mood for, but when I do want a well made hazy fruit bomb IPA, with nuances of vanilla and nuts, GN is where I tend to go and I'll pay their price.

I think my price comparisons for Great Notion are mostly from Denver and random other places I travel to a lot. That's mostly Chicago, Minneapolis, and the Southeast for what it's worth. The flat $5/$6 pricing is definitely less than I'm used to, although some of the pours are a little smaller (like you mention). The 5 for $15 flight is especially where things shine. They fill those little snifters almost all the way up and that price applies to the bigger beers. I didn't grab any cans or growlers. They were actually only of the IPA's that I personally wasn't a huge fan of, Invader and Oblivion 2. No big deal, though. I'm not a trader and I got to drink all of the ones I hoped to based on prior festival tasters.

GN was probably the favorite stop overall. We really liked Cascade, Deschutes, Upright, and the hidden gem of Old Town as well. For that matter, I don't think any place left us disappointed. We hit all of the main PDX recommendations and tried to get stuff from the other famous nearby breweries like Barley Brown's, Boneyard, Heater Allen, Pfriem, etc.
We also stopped into Beer O'Clock and was downright shocked to discover $3 happy hour beers. Not just select items, either - like 75% of the menu. Even a couple big beers. Prices like that simply don't exist in most markets, happy hour or not. I heard a rumor that a certain club very close to Cascade has sub $3 prices for like 1/2 the day, too. That's eye opening stuff

I hear you, and I know what you mean about the pricing here (I travel a lot as well).

I'm at Beer O'clock right now, and couldn't agree more. $3 for an 8 ounce pour of Super Nebula is prety much unimaginable most places I've lived or visited over the years.

Just moved here a couple weeks ago and find overall pricing to be pretty reasonable. It probably used to be a lot better here, but it is still better than other regions I have lived and frequented craft beer spots. Pittsburgh prices are on average the same as Great Notion, same with Richmond and lots of New England. New Orleans is the only place off the top of my head that has cheaper stuff in some formats, like 4 packs of ghost in the machine for 11 bucks at super markets, and all their happy hours, but that is an outlier because it is New Orleans. Brewery wise, if GN is the most expensive, you are doing alright IMO.

I can see why it would be frustrating to see prices around town increase as people move to the city, but hopefully the growing breweries treat employees well, give back to the community, etc. and if not you throw your support elsewhere. I don't really see the value in people from other regions coming in and criticizing Portland locals on NW forums who are discussing changes in the economics of the beer scene. Couple months back, I paid 12 bucks for like a 12 ounce pour of King Sue in Boston, never had it on draft. To complain about it seems dumb. I didn't have to go to that bar, or order that beer, and at least I had the option of ordering it, when 99 percent of the country doesn't get that option. That is completely different than someone discussing how all their local places have raised prices a certain amount over X number of years, or how busy places are, or other general trends.

Just my 2 cents following some of these discussions across NW boards the last couple weeks.

Probably a Peeler bar. Some of them even have great steaks for cheap.
