My wife and I are dog people. We grew up in homes with dogs; a succession of boxers in my family, and a variety of breeds in my wife’s. Since we’ve been married we have had anywhere from one to four dogs in the household. Early on there was only one, a golden retriever. When he got to be 10 years old, my wife thought he would like a companion for his elder years, and we ended up adopting a 10 year old yellow lab. With this addition, my wife hit upon the idea of adopting older dogs. She reasoned that it would be nice for that dog to have a family. And this has worked quite well. The downside is that, by definition, older dogs have a shorter life span than younger dogs and, as any pet owner can tell you, losing a pet is traumatic. So it was that when we moved two months ago, we only had one dog, an 11 year old shepherd mix.

After being in our new home for a month, my wife began volunteering at a local animal shelter. She found out this shelter, with its no kill policy, is terribly overcrowded. There are over 400 animals at this not very large shelter (Insert PSA: pet owners, do the right thing and spay/neuter your pet). One of the things that helps is becoming a foster parent for one of the animals. The pet lives in your house, gets shown on weekends, and is adopted. Then the next foster dog arrives. I pointed out a couple things for my wife. One was that we were not going to be taking in ten dogs at a time. One or two, yes. Maybe three. Another thing is that my wife and I are pushovers. I said the likelihood of us becoming attached to our foster dog would be high, and we would end up adopting the dog. And that’s exactly what happened. We took in a dog last week, who is less than a year old. He was an instant hit. Good temperament, got along great with our older dog, and housetrained in a couple days. He is going to be staying with us, which means we will be fostering and/or adopting another dog.

The new dog also seems amenable to having his picture taken with a beer. We’ve had a few dry runs that have gone reasonably well. Maybe Hank (we name all our dogs after characters in Breaking Bad, but that’s another story) will make his debut today.

When you drink your new beer today, take a picture of the beer with your pet. Tell me about the beer: appearance, aroma, taste, mouthfeel, and overall impression. Tell me also about your pet.

Note: a few weeks ago @woodychandler had some interesting thoughts on the time when NBS could be started. It is 10 pm where I live, which makes it midnight on the east coast, and early morning in western Europe. I think I will start this thread at midnight eastern time for a while, and see how that goes. An added benefit for me is I don’t have to get up at 5:30 am to start NBS.

Couldn't wait, cracked my mystery can from @bl00 in the NBS BIF. First sniff on cracking the can says lager. Pours clear, bright yellow straw with a finger or so of pearly white, quickly receding head. Effervescent and bubbly on the tongue. Taste is light citrus/grapefruit, moderate malt backbone, probably a Helles. Finishes a bit hoppy though, possibly Vic? I'm gonna say it's an IPL. It's an agreeable lager, pretty refreshing!

Opening the top secret envelope reveals that it was Spectral Focus:

Kudos to you and your wife. Beer is fun and important to many here. Life stories are much better. Will be home in a few days and reunited w our pup who we could not bring w us. It will be a great time. We have had dogs for years, About 3 yrs ago we had to have one put down due to issues/ old age etc. We went wo one for 1.5 yrs, Then I felt we needed a dog for both me and my wife. We have a great Springer Spaniel. My health is pretty bad which does not allow me to do as I would like w the Skipster but he is a great guy.

    Bless you !

Happy New Oliver, The Belz Are Ringing Beer Sunday (Week 710)!

As an interesting guy, I try to keep things interesting for all of us. I have a new part-time barback/busser gig at Columbia Kettle Works' 2nd Gear & I start at 1030 on Sunday so this new concept fits in with my day nicely. Thanks for the willingness to give it a whirl!

One of the really wild aspects of living in Lancaster, PA & now I am talking about the city, for which I have unsuccessfully run for mayor twice now, & NOT the surrounding county, is the plethora of beer reps.

It really winds me up when I hear someone say "I am from Lancaster" & then it turns out that they are from Ephrata or Quarryville or East Earl. No, you are from Lancaster COUNTY!

We have Colin Herbine of New Belgium, Meg "Ms. Moose" Moore of Victory, Jon Hoey of Wilsbach Distributors & Peter Belz of Shangy's, just to name a few off of the top of my head. As a result, tastings and samples are rampant & the latter just laid a buncha Oliver Brewing CANs on me for The CANQuest (tm)!

Guess what today's focus will be?

Oliver Brewing is an offshoot of the Pratt Street Ale House in Baltimore, both brewing operations run by Steve Jones, a British expat.

As long as I am slinging names, here in the county, we also have Paul Pendyck in Lititz (lit-its, NOT li-tits!) of U.K. Brewing Supplies, Ltd. & The GEN Sutter Inn & Bulls Head Public House. Not familiar with Paul? If you are doing anything related to cask ale here in the U.S., he is the fellow from whom you will buy your equipment! As such, The Bulls Head & GEN Sutter Inn hold a semi-annual Cask Ale Fest & you CAN bet that I am a regular attendee! As some wag remarked, "If cask ale is being drawn in his vicinity, you CAN bet that @woodychandler will be there!" Too true. Steve & his family come up for the event & stay at the GEN Sutter & he considers me his "mate". BTW, the next fest is F & Sa, 16 & 17 November with a full English Breakfast being served on Sa morning.

More names: Alex Hall @Imbiber was Paul's cellarman when they both lived in the U.K. Lots of Brits, and Jones tends to make English-style ales as a result. Speaking of Brits, if @Imbiber reads this & she is still there, perhaps I CAN impress upon him to send my regards to the expat server at Mugs Ale House in Brooklyn … She made an impression on this impressionable lad.

And without much further ado about nothing, my first & highly appropriately-named beer of the day:

Arrr! She was an Irish pirate . . . "Tis a lovely New Beer Sunday. Let's drink till we be merry and unfettered. A toast! Let the day unfold and roll toward uproarious puns!

This is Zero Gravity's Oktoberfest Marzen Lager

Because they called it a marzen I expected a slightly darker color than some of the imports and a blended malt bill. They are using pilsner malt, German Vienna malt, Munich l and Munich ll. Hallertau Mittlefruh and Ttettenang two classic noble hops.

Pours with a light haze on a sweet candy amber with some orange blush. fat head of foam sits and lasts. Floral notes accent toasty malt. A light sweet elegance really shows you a delicate sweet flower petal and spice. head falls to a thin dappled look. Drinks breaddy and with a surprising floral elegance. Crisp bubble and a a mouthfull fo hilly spice. One of the hops has a sweet flower petal that tastes a bit like nectar. There is also this soft spice that reminds me of flowers that grow very tiny and close to the ground. The combination of malts is at once toasty breaddy and has a light elegant sweetness. it is malt complexity without roasted flavors. Hops give a complimentary bitterness to finish it.

Nice, I like the midnight start Doc! I’ve been up for about 6 hours (UK time) and cracked a late morning beer to review here...and you guys are already rocking it!

A collab from several UK brewers including Northern Monk (Leeds), Civil Society Brewing Company, and Slim Pickens - “Dam & Blast”, a 7% DIPA:

Pours a cloudy pale gold with big fluffy white head; long cap retention; heavy ring and frothy heavy lacing; a little yeast settled in bottom of glass. 4.75

Photobombed by Wesley, one of the two cats we are sitting. Our dogs, Diego and Ava are home in Florida with our son who goes to University and minds the fire whilst we are away...

Aroma is strong grapefruit, followed by pineapple and lemongrass; earthy weedy hops as it warms. 4.5

Taste is lite bitter grapefruit rind; crisp malt underpins the bitter hops; some pineapple, with a touch of onion in the finish. 4.5

Medium body with a lite juicy feel; slightly astringent; moderate carbonation. 4.0

Overall, not full or fluffy, but otherwise a fine NEIPA style with a soft almost creamy bitter linger; I’d drink more notwithstanding the 5.80 Pound price per 16oz can (that’s about $8/can). Very enjoyable and light so you could drink more than one if so inclined!

Have a great Sunday, and cheers from Winchester!

    New Beer Sunday: A Witbier

Mornin’ NBSers, with an alert for Witbier fans who've wondered what Witbiers might have been like if they had been first brewed in Hawaii, or for those who’d like to try a “tropical island flair to a traditional witbier.” Also a special thanks to @lordofthewiens for his new start up this morning.

The weather here today is expected to be “a gorgeous fall day” with sunny skies and temps in the low 70s. Good day to deal with a few outdoor chores and maybe visit the local farmer’s market to check out the fresh produce, baked goods and the possibility that there is a booth from a local brewery or winery.

This morning’s new beer while fixing breakfast is the Avery Liliko’i Kepolo

As usual my review, subject to revision until the beer is finished or breakfast has started, which ever comes first, can be found here.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30/62866/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors are mostly about the passionfruit (think kiwi, pineapple and a bit of banana). There’s also some citrus and spice from the orange peel and coriander. This one is both drinkable and enjoyable and something I’ll be having more of it next time I find it fresh.

    Cheers, all!

Great intro @lordofthewiens ! We are a dog loving household here and have 1 rescue & 1 foster adoption. I think they are both around 10/12, so we are not expecting them to be around for a heck of a lot longer, but will love them and give them a great home environment while they are still kicking. On a side note, my brother just recently got a job running a no kill shelter in Austin. The kid has a big heart.

After running my company tailgate at the ND/Stanford game I was whooped last night, but I’m back up early as usual. Anyway, on to the beers....

I start my morning with some coffee. This beer came to me from @MacMalt along with some other “new to me” brews.

Appearance seems fairly dark brown with a small collar of tan foam. Nose gives way to chocolate, coffee, and (hazelnuts?). Not too familiar with this nut, but that’s probably the peanut lime flavors that I’m catching in the taste. This also has a bit of a cinnamon taste, that adds a dryness. Spotty lacing, nice legs. Pretty nice brew!

I would love to post pictures with my dog but he loves beer way too much. Since he stole my KBS a few years ago I cannot trust him around my beer. Recently, I heard him moving a chair to get up on the kitchen counter to steal some. Oddly enough he does not exhibit this behavior when it comes to food.

    Do you like yuzu fruit?

To be honest I do not know whether I would enjoy eating yuzu fruit – I have never had it (I haven’t even seen one).

I did some web searching to learn:

“About the size of a tangerine, yuzu is mainly cultivated in Japan, Korea, and China. It's incredibly fragrant, but also super sour and tart, which means it's not meant to be eaten as is. Instead, its zest and juice are used for flavoring in the kitchen.”

Well there you go, after reading that I would never even think about eating yuzu fruit.

I wonder if Maria (@utopiajane) has ever cooked with yuzu (she reads like she is an accomplished chef)?

Well, all this jibber jabber brings us to today’s beer: Sixpoint Yuzu Jammer which is a fruited Gose beer.

    But wait! There is more!!

On the can it lists: “Gose style Ale w/ Yuzu, Thai Basil, Kaffir Lime and Habanero Sea Sat added.”

Well, that most certainly sounds like a list of ingredients that I can envision Maria cooking with.

This might be a good time for a joke. My wife is predominantly of Irish descent and she likes to say here grandmother cooked with both spices: salt and pepper!

So, what does a Gose with all of these interesting additions taste like?

Served in my Sixpoint Jammer can-shaped glass:

    Appearance:

Golden yellow color with a three finger white head which dissipates quickly.

    Aroma:

Mostly a complex fruity/citrus aroma but I am also pickup up a whiff of menthol as well.

    Taste:

The flavor follows with complex fruity flavors accompanied with some citrus. And yup, the menthol is there as well. There is just a hint of salty taste. It is low/moderately bitter. On the backend there is spicy heat which sorta reminds me of hop burn.

    Mouthfeel:

Light bodied with a dry finish; there is a ‘spritzy’ quality to this beer as well.

    Overall:

This beer is quite intriguing with a complex set of flavors and qualities.

I enjoyed drinking this one can of beer but when I was finished I had no desire to drink another which is atypical for me when it comes to the Gose beer style. Perhaps too much spicy heat for my palate?

A new for me Minnesota brewed Czech Style Pilsner . . .

Beautiful, clear lighter shade of gold color with substantial white cap and lacing.

Aroma of sweet, biscuity malt with floral, spicy hops.

Taste is malt forward with a touch of sweetness that rapidly evolves into a clean, bracing bitterness from the spicy hops while retaining the underlying malt. The malt is substantial in a fuller bodied, bready way with a touch of graham cracker. If malt is the Artillery hops are the Calvary in this field winning charge.

Medium full texture with balancing carbonation.

I would've picked this out as a Pilsner in a blind tasting and I'm certainly no authority on the subject. I do favor Lagers, especially Pils, and can't honestly say I would've caught this one as being American brewed except the freshness might've been a giveaway.
