Ok, the clouds have decided to drop another sheen of white stuff on us - nothing a broom and a little effort can't clear from the paths to the house. But it is now time to do my review for Sierra Nevada's Resilience Butte County Proud IPA.

The other version I had of this beer was made by Fair Winds in Lorton, VA at their taproom. I expect that FW likely followed the suggested recipe fairly closely, though I have no details to back that up. Their beer was a 7% offering (versus 6.7 on this beer and the 6.8 listed on this site, so that's minor). I had Fair Winds Resilience as an earthy pale ale with a little pine/pith backing to close the taste - though I was just ending a cold when I had it.

How does the progenitor's version compare?

The pour is similar, maybe a tad lighter than I recall from Fair Winds. This is a nice clear light copper offering. I nice lightly tanned spongy head tops the body, lasting pretty well. The early lacing is as if you took what you see in the picture just turned the opacity up on the head to 50%.

The nose on this does have an earthy backbone, but it has more pop than I recall FW's version having. A bit of citrus - grapefruit and tangerine, a little black tea, and a light bit of indistinct woodiness. I also get a little bit of nectarine - perhaps a mix of the citrus with some other scent.

Opening notes have a more distinct bitterness to its earthy opening than the comparison brew. The bitterness grows with the citrus pith more than pine components by mid-taste. The malt base isn't adding sweetness, so I am guessing the darker color means it is a combination of some toasted notes joining the obvious bitterness in a way to lend to what I call earthy.

This does have a fairly distinctive SN profile to it. I have seen others compare it to Torpedo and Celebration. I find it a bit drier than I recall those beers, but we all know how memories can fool you. I sorta have it as a more citrusy (and less piney) version of SNPA. Cheers!

50% of the non-beer portion of this post is spot on. The Bruins are okay enough, but the rest ruins it altogether

Okay starting of this Sunday with my first of 2 mystery beers from @2beerdogsactually this was supposed to be mystery beer #2 but I grabbed the wrong one first. On to the firstpour.
This beer poured a dark brown to almost black color. There was little to no head from my pour.
The nose is roasted malt with hints of with a hint of Cocoa. There is some hint of sweetness I am getting maybe vanilla?
The mouthfeel is fairly thin not sure if this is a porter or perhaps a stout. I don't get enough sweetness to be a milk stout.
The taste well is much like the nose dark roasty malts with hints of cocoa. There are hints of something sweet but I can't really put my finger on what it is. Okay now time for the reveal.
Okay this is Imperial Sweet Stout Orange Treat from Three Magnets Brewing in Olympia, Wa.
I think my review here runs true. Very thin to me for an Imperial Stout not overly sweet and as much as I want to find the orange my old taste buds just don't. I've let this beer warm as I've sipped it and it really hasn't changed much IMO.

Brilliant and clear light golden body topped with a thick, creamy, and sticky head. Big cracker scent on the nose; some grass-like notes and hard-to-define esters. Mild flavor with a decent hop bitterness being the most prominent quality. Medium-light body; crisp and fairly dry.

A fine looking beer but not much distinctive flavor besides the bitterness.

So, yeah, nothing special but still a fair thirst quencher. This beer was part of a recent birthday mix-6 from my ancient neighbor Tactical Bob. My wife and I were scheduled to meet Tactical Bob and Mrs. Bob at a local brewpub to celebrate his 81st birthday, but we found out we have a blocked sewer/waste water line backing up in our crawlspace, so get to standby for a plumber to stop by, hopefully fix the problem, and pay him some weekend rates for his services. Beer and football will take the edge off a bit...

    Firestone peachy bones
..medium light body with plenty of effervescent carbonation.
Aroma is a really nice mix just ripened peaches, funk, sour, followed by some malt and yeast.

Taste is the ripe peaches forward. Some funk, sour, mildly sweet peach syrup. Peach flavor comes off as fresh and real ,not artifical at all[IMG]

So, I put the kids down for a nap, send my wife out to test drive a few options for a new vehicule and turn on the game to see the Chargers down 28 - 7. Ugh!!

Perhaps a new beer can redeem what to this point had been a pretty enjoyable day.

Today I am enjoying a brand new beer, released yesterday by Bellwoods. Bier Garten Pilsner.

Bellwoods is, as I have said before, argualbly the best brewery in the country. They started out making IPAs and stouts, branched into sours and as of last year, have jumped into lagers with both feet. I’d argue they already make the best lagers in the province, and are certainly top 3 or 5 in the country. They have started a new series, of which Bier Garten is the second, where they are pairing with Escarpment Labs on choosing yeast strains. The first in the series, Isar Pilsner, was quite good, but not as good as some of the previous lagers I’ve had. This is much more to my taste. I’m looking forward to the Helles that will be number three, later this month.

    Here we go:

Cloudy bright gold with a moderate head that dissipates slowly, and leaves a lovely lacing on the glass

The nose is broadly floral and slightly grassy. One definitely picks up a little Saaz in the aroma.

The taste is again broadly floral, a slight, not quite honey sweetness that sits in the background. A gentle hop bitterness joins the swallow.

This is crisp and effervescent. Perfect light Pilsner body.

I really like this. Not quite as much as Bellweiser which has become the flagship Pilsner. I would gladly drink this regularly, and it certainly brightens a day ruined by the evil Patriots. Bonus marks for the very convincing retro German look label.

    Cheers.

Crappy cell phone picture, hopefully a better review. Chilled a couple beers in the snow while shoveling out my car and scraping the car clean. Not sure if I'll get to both today, but wanted to give this one a whirl.

    Franziskaner's Hefe-weisse.

Pours a hazy orange that turns turbid and murky when the final ounces are poured into the glass. Beer is a burnt-orange with a finger of white foam. Head retention is moderate to poor. Aroma is lemon zest, clove, banana, and yeast esters layered over biscuity, nutty malts. It's really subtle, but still nuanced. Served chilled on a warm day, it's a welcoming smell. Flavor profile is nutty, biscuity malts with clove, lemon zest, banana, and yeast esters. Each sip opens up and folds out beautifully, despite being a smaller beer. Mouth feel is crisp and borders on harsh from the carbonation. It has a medium-thin consistency. Overall, a refreshing and flavorful hefe-weissen, which makes for a tasty sessionable beer.

Thanks for opening @cjgiant , good luck with the snow. I had Resilience the other night on draft here in CT (the SN edition) and I saw it on the shelf today in a local store. I am not aware of any local brewery that has attempted it though. I didn't rate it the other night though due to a severe cold that was blocking me up. I would love to do a group virtual tasting. Hopefully some other BAs will respond in this thread.
Today I spent a fortune on another Singlecut, I'm An Alligator. Felt like splurging, but I don't know how long they can support their sky high pricing strategy.
Can is dated 12/4/18, not fresh, but within reason.
Classic medium gold IPA color, but translucent with floaties (can says "pour carefully"). Head is elegant but does not last the session. Does not lace, but does leave spots of froth here and there.
Dank aroma, dirt floor with composted orange peel. (Can't believe I came up with that, but I'm sticking with it as accurate).
Dulled orange rind flavor with malt presence. Alcohol presence seems more prominent than 8,2%. I'm at a 3.75, good but definitely not worth the price of admission.
In keeping with their naming theme, Singlecut named this using classic rock lyrics. I either never knew or forgot that this is the opening line to David Bowie's Moonage Daydream.

Thanks Craig for getting NBS off to a great start.
I thought I would employ some reverse psychology in choosing a new beer. I picked a California beer to put a hex on the Chargers. It seems to have worked, with the Patriots up 35-7 at half time. Next stop Kansas City.
My new beer is Tangerine Express IPA from Stone.
The beer is a bright gold color with a small white head and no lace.
    Aroma of citrus and pine.
Strong tangerine taste, some pineapple. Late piney hops.
A middle of the road IPA. Nicely hopped.

So this one came to me a while back, and I couldn't think of a better time than during a sleety, icy, snowy day to break it out. This came to me as a BIF, just can't recall from whom, maybe Hooks? He's from Iowa, @Hookstrat you sent me this, that correct? Its pretty damn epic, that much I'm certain of!

This thing starts out exactly as billed, as the aroma is perfectly layered with straight on maple syrup sitting on top molasses sitting on top chocolate. Taste is very similar, as the maple syrup acts as the backdrop to the well crafted stout, full of chocolate and hints of cherries. Finish is like Belgian chocolate with a little bit of bitterness lingering.

Mildly hazy, peach-colored yellow body supporting a thick, frothy head. Aroma of slightly overripe fruit; some dull orange. Watery cereal grain taste; some citrus zing and low-key hop bitterness. Medium body; a bit of tingle on the palate; a slight dryness overall.

There is not much to make of this beer other than there is little distinctive flavor or sensory appeal.

At least the plumber is finally here and the waste water line clog should be an easy (yet expensive) fix. Gave up on the Chargers / Patriots game as watching a blowout is not really entertaining. Now all those Frankenstein movies playing on Retroplex...that's entertainment at its finest...

Claims to be coconut rum-barrel aged but I’m getting more cherry than anything. Not sure if that’s intentional or due to infection, but I’m enjoying it anyway. Tastes like a stout you’d hand to a girlfriend who claims to not like stouts. It’s light, a bit sweet, fruity, and rather mild on barrel. Like a chocolate-cherry dessert. Thanks again Brian!

Again, I apologize for sending a comparatively ho-hum beer as a mystery beer. If things had worked out, you'd have had a crowler of something that is a bit of a style-stradler, and fairly unique, but it ran out before I could get it filled.

Happy Sunday NBS players. Fucking cold as shit here on the island with sunny and clear skies. Winter has really started to bite down here and the rest of the country looks worse. Not looking forward to work tomorrow but I have an interview on Thursday which could change a lot in terms of my current career and work/life balance. Relaxing the day away, with some playoff football, plenty of good snacks, and a few beers.

My new beer today is Procrastinator, a doppelbock, from Moustache brewing here on the island. I had the chance to grab a few singles of locals that I would not normally purchase in a pack so this is one of the first that I'm trying. The brew checks in at 6.7% abv and no canning date but it was released around 12/20 so probably just shy of 1 month on her.

The pour gives a nice chestnut/ruby red color with moderate carbonation and a fast white head. The nose is subtle with malt and sweet notes. The drinking starts with lots of roasted pale malts upfront. A pretty smooth flow that finishes clean and sweet. Subtle flavor notes of caramel, nuts, brown sugars, and dark candied fruits. The mouth feel light-moderate with more of a crisp feel. The body leaves something to be desired and while not watery it does walk that line closely at times.

Overall, it's ok but nothing special. Flavors are decent, but the whole time that I'm drinking it, I'm wanting a much stronger presence from all aspects. I'm in the 3.5 range at best here,

Another new beer for me today. Figure I'd give it a whirl since I just started my last load of laundry.

    Martin City's Donut Stout.

Pours black with a fingers and a half of khaki foam. Head retention is good, leaving a few rings of lacing behind. Aroma is sweet - very, very sweet. Vanilla bean and maple syrup is right on the cusp, creating a cloyingly sweet aroma. A little bit of roasty and toasty malts help ground out the back end and offers up a touch of smooth bitterness, but it still falls sharply far from creating balance. Flavor profile is maple syrup, vanilla bean and chocolate layered over nutty, roasty, toasty malts that are a little burnt and charred. Despite a cloyingly sweet aroma, the flavor profile is grounded and balanced by the malts well, unfortunately the malts come off lightly charred driving the bitterness even further. It does taste like a glazed donut though. Mouth feel is lightly velvety with a thinning consistency at the tail end. It has a medium-thin consistency. Overall, an aroma that doesn't quite line up with the flavor profile. It's most definitely a dessert stout, which can be discerned just based on the name.

    Score: 4.25 | 3.75 | 3.5 | 3.75 | 3.75 | BA Score: 3.68 | rDev: -4.2% (1 other rating, no reviews)

Also curious, but this beer's profile was added the day after it's one rating. How does that work? Was the beer profile confirmed a day after despite being rate-able/review-able immediately upon being added?

Good Sunday afternoon, New Beer Sippers and commentators. My wife and I spent another full day cleaning out her Mom's apartment. My mother-in-law just moved into an assisted living facility about a half mile from our home which will greatly simplify Mrs. Mac's life. So it's time for a beer. And quite a beer it is! Russian River's Supplication, a sour brown ale aged in pinot noir barrels with cherries. I'm only very slowing starting to appreciate sours but even a neophyte like me can appreciate how good this is. I received it from @Bum4ever in the NBS BIF 8.5. Thanks, Josh. I have another Russian River sour and I'm looking forward to reviewing it; perhaps next week. Here's my full review:

    4.49/5 rDev -1.3%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

I received this from @Bum4ever in the NBS BIF 8.5. Bottled on 7/2/2018 and poured from a 375 ML cork and cage bottle into a tulip glass. The color is somewhere between ruby and orange and the ecru-colored head dissipated quickly. It has a very fragrant smell of ripe cherry, oak, red wine, and brett yeast. The taste is complex: tart cherry, pinot noir, oak, and a crackery malt at the finish. The flavors are all bold but they blend very well and there is a surprising balance of sweet and sour. It finishes with a touch of bitterness. This ale is a nice, full body with lively carbonation, and it's easily drinkable at 7.75% ABV. While I am not a connoisseur of Wild Ales, I have to say that Supplication is really delicious and fun to drink.

Greetings, fellow NBSers, and thanks to @cjgiant for getting us going,

Currently a cloudy 35°, with a low but chilly wind coming out of the north. Earlier in the week we had a little snow and a night of freezing rain, but nothing on the ground now.

While my beer intake has been low this year thus far, I have had a locally brewed Resilience IPA, brewed at my favorite hyper-local brewery, Iron Goat. While my taste buds were a little blunted, I found it an excellent IPA, and am proud that three rather small local breweries have stepped up to donate their time and money to brew it.

Why were my taste buds blunted, and why has my 2019 beer intake been so low? Well, over Xmas I picked up a headcold from my 3yr old niece, and because I have damaged sinuses, there was enough nasal drainage into my lungs that I'm the proud owner of a massive case of bronchitis.I finally bowed to the inevitable and sought medical attention last Monday and was prescribed antibiotics.

What sucks about this is I've got some wonderful looking Midwest beer on hand from @Victory_Sabre1973 for NBS BIF 8.5, and I have to wait it out until I can properly review and enjoy them!

    Here's what he sent me:[IMG]

I have high hopes to be tearing into these by next NBS. Until then, have a great NBS everyone!
