Another one courtesy @FBarber. Wee Willie's Heavy Strong Scotch Ale, barrel aged.

    4.07 overall

My can checks in at 10.0 %ABV.

Pours an effervescent chestnut-hued brown with fast falling tan head. Viscious, zero head rentention & lacing

S: Figs, a little boozey barrel, kind of dials back as this warms

T: Follows the nose, although the booze is pretty subtle, peatyness & dryness as well up front. Jammyness, a little peat & a little maple syrup as this warms, just a little barrel influenced boozeyness/dryness lurking on the edges. Finishes with jammmyness, a little barrel dryness, some cherry & a touch of peat

MF: Medium body, tamped down carbonation & little boozey warmth

A nice take on the style, drinks easy for the style & ABV

    New Beer Sunday,
and a brand new beer from Beer Tree & Mortalis, released on Thursday. (Both will be at EBF, btw.)
    Looks like a normal stout.
The smell in the glass is of a normal stout - roasy malt, char, and cocoa.
The can, however, has a lot more aroma, with the vanilla, chocolate, and jammy fruit, that the can suggests.
The flavor follows the aroma of the can, with oily feel, and light fine carbonation.
A good one. Smooth, and dangerously easy-drinking. Very slight alcohol burn at the back of the throat, that's not unpleasant. Probably will be even a little better with a few months on it.

This is from @SammyJaxxxx in the recently completed NBS BIF 8.5 Secret Santa. I raise my glass to @lordofthewiens and his brother-in-law Dick with this Interboro/Burial collab Pilsner.

An aggressive pour yields a beer the color of sunshine before twilight begins, with a nice bit of haze and a frothy white head. Bready malts and noble hop aromas dominate the nose.

The taste features the slightest bit of lemongrass to accompany the bready malt flavors and the grassy hop notes. I’m a HUUUUGE fan of Victory’s Prima Pils, and this beer is the equal of that magnificent Pilsner, IMHO.

    Happy New Quad Sunday!

Pretty nice day on the Western Slope, around 36 at the trailhead, some sun, some overcast. Having a pretty tasty brew, surprised me, been awhile since I've had a quad. GJ does not even have any Rochefort 8, or 10, miss that shit. Maybe pickup on the Sopranos series, season 5.

Proper glassware, though not correct for the style ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Very nice fruit IPA. Great head retention/soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of red grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, red apple, passion fruit, mango, melon, berry, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, and pine hops; with balanced caramel, cracker, toasted biscuit malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hops and yeast earthiness. A bit malty/muddy, and muted aromas. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body; balanced creamy/bready malts and sticky hops; some resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing bitter dryness, no hop astringency. Very smooth, not aggressive, minimal warming 6.5%. Nice balance of juicy/dank/earthy Citra hops and ruby red grapefruit; with a balanced bready English malt backbone. Mild residual sweetness from lingering resin dryness. More of an English IPA really, will have to change the listing. 3.88

    Thanks a lot!

But, yeah, that one probably could do with some tweaking but after reading the can and seeing how they make a lot of one-and-done recipes I don't think that's gonna happen . I really do appreciate trying to get me stuff that I'll enjoy, though.

Next up is my third Grimm offering: Catch Wave, a NE-style IPA. Both of the other two I had scored above 4.00, so let's see if Catch Wave can keep that run going.

This .... is a tough beer for me to rate, honestly. It's massively dank, especially on the back half - but I'm getting ahead of myself.

That very modest head is all this brew could manage from what became a rather turbulent pour as I noted the poor production. The body itself is beautiful, if you don't mind the NE-style haziness. This one definitely falls in line with Tree House and Trillium: opaque and pulpy, but not dirty.

The nose is all bright hops, both citrus and tropical tones, bright herbs, and a pungent dankness. Without knowing the hop bill, the nose is strongly suggestive of Citra.

(Post-review: Grimm claims a double dry hop with El Dorado, Hallertau Blanc, Mosaic, and yes, Citra. Also includes Falconer's Flight in the brew. That hop bill certainly explains the dankness.)

The flavor is mostly muddled; picking out individual flavors is difficult. There's a ton of hops, presenting every which way, with one notable exception: daaaaaank. Not the strongest I've had, and the more of it I drink, the less overpowering it becomes, but that first sip? Wow.

Very, very lively on the palate, which is a surprise.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/32893/237806/?ba=Roguer#review
    4.02 / -5.6%

So why do I say this is tough for me to rate? Well, for starters, I don't particularly like dank hops. I can appreciate it in moderation, but this is past my personal threshold. I can rate to style, however, and I know how much so many other BAs love that in their IPAs.

If I rated higher than my personal enjoyment in that regard, I also had to penalize the brew for the muddled waves of hoppiness. Very few flavors came through cleanly. It's the IPA equivalent of the Wall of Sound technique. You don't know exactly what's going on, but damn it sure is hoppy!

Still, overall I'm enjoying this brew, and I do think it's very well made overall.

    Cheers!

#2 is also from @SammyJaxxxx, and the maple syrup (for the pancakes Mrs O is diligently preparing for our dinner this frigid evening in Northern Indiana) is from our beer nerd friend @Ozzylizard in NBS BIF 007.

I could probably fill up the next 6 months of NBS with beers I’ve received in NBS BIF events - as a matter of fact, that is my new credo (I love having a credo).

    Here’s to Dick.

The pour is black with mahogany colors on the edges, underneath a dense tan head. The first note on the nose is rich coffee - wow. This literally reminds me of brunch. There’s also a significant cinnamon component. I am now officially salivating.

The maple and cinnamon are more prominent on the taste, which really elevates this, IMHO, because they are the perfect balance to the roasty coffee flavors, and admit milk chocolate flavors to the imperial porter dance party Kane has served up.

The mouthfeel is a bit chewy, which fits this beer perfectly. This flavor profile (chocolate, coffee, maple) is popular, and Kane absolutely nailed this with the cinnamon addition.

    Synopsis:
Velvety smooth. Sure this smells and tastes like a friggin christmas cake, but the body is the highlight. Especially coming off a week of gross sickness, this beer is the best kind of medicine. I’m not too sure if the silky body is due to the Grains of Paradise, but I’m confident their inclusion doesn’t hurt either. I’ll be sipping this big dog for several hours. Thanks again Brian!

New Beer Sunday: American Brut IPA

Evening NBSers with a suggestion for those who are curious about Brut IPAs.

With the Rams headed for the Super Bowl now it’s time for the next football evening new beer as the Chiefs and Patriots meet up. This particular new beer is the Brut IPA from New Belgium.

As usual, my review, subject to change until the beer is finished, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/192/364095/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors of this beer are mostly about tropical fruits such as pineapple, mango and papaya. There’s also some citrus, citric zest and pine resin. There’s a bit of initial light crackery malt sweetness that complements some light bitterness. The finish begins as the sweetness disappears first as the finish turns dry. The disappearance of the light sweetness followed by the fruits and then, eventually, by the light bitterness. Worth trying if you haven’t or want a sense of what the Brut IPA style is about.

    Cheers, all!

Excellent as expected. Great rocky head retention/soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big peanut butter, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, roasted nuts, toasted oats, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of toffee, molasses, dark fruit, smoke, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Very mild herbal/floral/grassy hop, and roasted bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body; creamy/bready/grainy malts; light sticky hops and chalky roast in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering hop/roast bitter dryness; no cloying/acrid flavors. Super smooth, minimal warming 6.3%. Pretty much perfectly balanced between PB and nicely rich malt complexity; with restrained fruity yeast and mild earthy hops against sweetness. Nothing overwhelming. Spot on English style example. Will get again. 4

Took me a while to get back to beer - watching that Rams win in New Orleans - didn't have much down time before the KC-NE game kicked off, but working from the sofa now, laptop in lap while icy winds whip against the windows...

    Foreign Objects' Fascination Street...
Double dry hopped 7.5% IPA, featuring Citra and Vic Secret hops; 12/27/18 canning...

Pours an opaque pale golden-orange under a finger or two of white foam... Ample citrus on the nose, orange and grapefruit come to mind, followed by some juicier fare on the sip - impressions of pineapple and peach rounding things off... Something of an earthy and herbal tone adds some depth while a faint pine hovers over the palate... Soft and fuzzy with citrusy tingle and ample carbonation... A good beer, but pretty much everyone's brewing beers like this these days, and this one doesn't really elevate above the rest...

    Cheers...

Tried to snap this quickly, and forgot to reset my ISO. Grainy, but we're back to watching the game and reviewing one last one. Figured I'd go for something Kansas City for the game. This is one of Torn Label's variants on this beer, which was aged in various barrels across town. This one is aged in Tom's Town barrels.

    Unique tag information.

Torn Label's Long Time Comin' (Tom's Town version).

Pours black with a finger of caramel fizzy, foam that doesn't retain well. Aroma is apple sauce, cinnamon, pears, caramel, red grapes and roasty, toasty malts. While it doesn't smell heavy and boozy, it does come across as 'hot'. It comes across as g-ma's secret spiked apple sauce. Flavor profile is apple sauce, cinnamon, pears, grapes, toffee, and caramel. Roasty and toasty malts add a little darkness, but overall, it drinks pretty 'bright'. Heat comes via some light-colored liquor. Mouth feel is medium-thin with just a touch of graininess to the texture. Overall, this has to be one of the most intriguing barrel aged beers I've drank to date. It certainly features a bit of heat, but that heat isn't throat-burning whiskey heat, instead coming across like some sort of gin or light-colored liquor. Important note: unique tag says this was aged "in Tom Town's Royal Gold bourbon barrels for xxx months", but has very little bourbon notes. I'm taking off 0.25 from overall for this, in fairness of being totally open.

Imperial white stout. This was fantastic! Amazing lasting head retention/thick soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big milk/white chocolate, cocoa, nutty medium roast coffee, honey, caramel, vanilla, cream, toasted oats, and white bread dough; with light notes of dark fruit, smoke, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Very mild herbal/grassy hop, and roasted coffee bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; very creamy, silky, velvety, bready malts/lactose; light sticky hops, and chalky roast. Lightly increasing lingering bitter dryness; no cloying sweetness. Super smooth/soft, minimal warming 8%. Amazing balance of rich malts, cocoa, lactose, and fruity/nutty coffee complexity; with just enough earthy hops to balance sweetness. Best white stout I've ever had, easily. 4.28
