    New Beer Sunday: American Porter

Afternoon, NBSers with a recommendation for SE PA and South Jersey people preferring particularly pleasant porters.

This afternoon’s new porter is the King Stomp Porter from Cape May brewing.

As usual, my review, subject to revision until the porter is finished, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/25890/147829/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors of this porter have lots of chocolate and cocoa and some dark roasted malt. In the background there’s a bit of anise and coffee. The chocolate and the other flavors begin to fade away first into a clean, crisp semi dry, lightly bitter ending. The whole combination of aromas/flavors works well for me and I’ll be looking to have it again.

    Cheers, all!

Really interesting. I've had a bunch of Orval of different ages over the years and didn't know it was possible for it to be nearly headless. It usually takes me multiple pours and is a head I can eat like an apple. I'm really loving the inexplicably never tried beer theme this weekend!

Staying stout with yet another Collective Arts Origin of Darkness collab...
This 11.5% abv stout with Forbidden Root features the bourbon barrel treatment, of course, and then the use of guajillo chili, cacao nibs, and radish honey...
Nice brown-black pour goes black in the glass, with slim dark brown head that slimmed to a hazy sheen and collar, with some motes of lace trailing each sip...
Aromas are chocolaty with vapors of bourbon wood and honey, followed by more of the same on the sip... Guajillo heat is mild, and if there's any sharpness to radish honey as opposed to, say, wildflower honey, I'm oblivious to it here... Moderately sweet, only mildly bitter with a bit of ash on the back-end of the sips... Smooth and medium-bodied, with a little stickiness left behind... Maybe not as interesting to me as their black truffle stout I had earlier today, but certainly a very enjoyable beer...

    Cheers...

    Synopsis:
Quite unusual. The butterfly pea flowers are hard to place, but I’m tasting something vegetal which I assume is the peas. The galaxy hops add some tasty citrus, and there is a lot of funk, wood, and acid in the mix as well. A lot of complexity here, which I will enjoy in sips for the next hour or so. Thanks again Brian!

I once used “squishy” as a word to describe my wife. I was referring to certain parts of her which should, in my belief, be squishy. Anywho, unmarried lads out there, don’t ever say anything about your wife/girlfriend is squishy.

This new beer is a hoppy Pilsner collaboration between hi-wire and Rhinegeist brewing.

It’s a bright golden slightly cloudy color with medium off white head. Lemon grass, zest, very refreshing scent. The taste is equally refreshing and would be a great lawnmower beer. Actually I’m going outside to finish it cuz it’s 60 degrees and sunny today. Mouthfeel is thin and crisp. Overall this is a pretty good refreshing beer. Very refreshing. Did I mention it was refreshing?

Super hazy, opaque rather, pale yellow beer has a decent sized white foamy head, and leaves decent lacing. Nose begins with a little ripe veggie thing that quickly allows some garlic to pop in. Taste starts out garlicky and morphs through beet and green onion before finally settling in with a medicinal sweetness (likely the only indication of a higher ABV) coinciding with a sandy feel and bitterness.

You’ve described almost every taste I dislike (garlic, beet, green onion, medicinal, sand), so thank you for the warning! I’ll be avoiding this one.

    Happy NBSBS everybody!
I hope you all are doing well and that the freezing temperatures didn't hit any of you too awful hard this past week. I am relaxing this weekend for the most part but have actually been more busy with socializing and whatnot than usual, which has been nice. Today, though, my plan is to hang out, cool a little and review a couple new beers while partaking in some hockey and football. Things could be worse!
So without further ado I'll get right to it.

The first beer I'm going to try is a new stout from Boreale. They are an interesting case. They are basically the Sam Adams of Quebec. However a couple years ago they were having a rough time of it and were apparently really on the rocks. Seemingly out of the blue, their new brewer threw together a NEIPA and (surprise, surprise) it was popular beyond belief. They have continued to brew their straightforward, masses-pleasing grocery store/gas station beer but have also started periodically making cans of trendier stuff. It's mainly noteworthy cause of how popular/well-regarded these beers are. It is basically like if Sam Adams also brewed Heady Topper. The IPA and IIPA are very good for the most part (though they are definitely not the most consistent beers). This is the first stout they've made as far as I know.

It pours dark and rich looking. The smell is caramelized sugar and cinnamon roll dough. The flavor follows with some cocoa, lactose sweetness (I assume) and very lightly spicy roast flavors. It is pretty creamy and very smooth and drinkable. The impression of smores really does come through (the chocolate in the taste the graham cracker in the aroma and the toasted sugar of the marshmallow throughout), but who knows if that is just me being suggestible... Anyway, this is an enjoyable beer that seems to do what it set out to do. I'd have it again.

I usually avoid beer with wacky ingredients/schticks and mainly bought this one of of curiosity and based on the fact that I couldn't tell if there were actual marshmallows or anything in it. It is interesting and I'm glad I got it even if beers like this aren't really my thing.

    Here is my full review.

    Cheers!

    Hey what's going on!!

Hope everyone is good and well.

Been doing my usual, but also I would say my consumption these days has been a little bit more specific and not as big. Not that is a bad thing, but also I just have had much going on in this thing called life, to be spending all of it drinking and reviewing beers. But I still manage some in, and I am glad to see that NBS is still going strong as well! Also good to see that the usual cast of characters @JackHorzempa @woodychandler @cavedave and other castmates are still going strong.

I myself have had a couple curve balls thrown, nothing major, one seems to be that Instagram is no longer allowing? or is it BA? pictures to be embedded so I had to find an alternate hosting site. Minor learning curve and now we are back at it.

Also with some of the time I've been debating about re-launching my old imbibehour channel and focusing it more on food and such. The drinks would be a good part of it too, but it's all just an idea at this stage.

Speaking of food, it is becoming a big food weekend as I had a giant batch of crepes made to enjoy a little La Chandeleur in the making this weekend. Let's not forget on the American side... we got groundhog day and a Superbowl feast to partake in. Superbowl is just inescapable I discovered when I moved to the US many years ago, even with me sort of disowning the NFL about 2-3 years ago.

I demanded wings.. and many of them...

Well my amigos, we're all here to talk about the beers we have been drinking, so let's forget this idle chit chat and get into the meat of things.

In the time I have been away, I managed an excursion to rural PA not too far North and found a good store to partake in new goodies. Unfortunately those goodies along with many potato chips and Lebanon baloney (speaking of meat) have since been consumed.

    enough now..

What's new for our hero today?

    Trigo - Founders Brewing Co.

Poured from the can into a wheat ale glass.

Deep rich body, slightly hazy with a touch of edged chestnut brown and muted brass colored body. Some linear carbonation, but more so a thick beaming lathery fine as thick as a fist bellows out. Settles eventually with some pill and soapy lacing, for an aggressive posture.

Nice hop nose, coming a bit herbal and somewhat juicy smelling on the hop angle. Aroma has minimal sensing chewy depth as it is big on hop forward action. Some nice mild perfume like florals seem to come out as well.

Palate seems to be pretty basic. There's a touch of fade here in the flavor (checks can date.. Oh my..) but it's still palatable. Palate on the hops angle seems considerably more fruity with touch of juiced orange a bit, mixing with a little tropical as well. Touches a bit of cantaloupe and melon quality as well, but with a lighter body.

A bit of fade here (that's on me) but also an almost session like malt body, still the base flavors are very solid and enjoyable

I see you have been diggin into these as I had in the past as well.. I've really enjoyed them as well. Very impressed with these Origin of D collabs on these big stouts, real dark horse people should check them out... although the Truffles on is probably not for everybody in my opinion

    ..solid black
...medium light carbonation with an above average body. has a slight creamy, thick oily feel, overall a very nice body
..aroma is sweet bourbon, vanilla, caramel and alcohol
..taste is malt candy upfront with sweet bourbon that lingers a long time. The vanilla and caramel do make a nice appearance followed by a faint amount of pecan

Guinness 200th Anniversary Export Stout, 6% ABV. Pours black with a two finger tan head. Nose is malty, with toffee and chocolate. Taste is slightly sweet toffee, bitter chocolate, roast malt, with a moderate bitter close. Excellent mouthfeel, overall outstanding. Best Guinness I've had. Not bad for a 200 year old beer.

    Beer #666 for me :scream:

    Greenbush Delusion

Happy Sunday, BAs. Today’s new beer comes to me courtesy of @LloydDobler in the NBS BIF.

Delusion pours near black with a thin finger of mocha head that settles into a crown and leaves decent lacing.

It has a relatively restrained aroma. The first thing I picked up was light cider or even apple brandy. That quickly gave way to some milk chocolate and whiskey with vanilla, toffee and light woody notes.

Chocolate and roasted malts hit first in the taste. There’s clear wood and a nice kiss of alcohol burn. A touch of that fruity apple character also continues. Wood, toffee, almond, chocolate bitterness and a hint of char linger in the aftertaste.

It’s relatively thin bodied for the style with some milky creaminess to and light, slow-building carbonation.

Real tasty stuff, with some nice depth of flavor as you sit with it. Thanks, Chris.
