Looks like you didn't apply the craft beer porter/stout binary formulation, where thick=good .

Actually, that sounds like a wonderful beer- what store carries it?

Another thanks to @cjgiant for this beer, Bourbon Barrel Porter from Alewerks. Pours a very dark brown, almost black with a well retained one inch tan head that left sticky lacing. Smells of bourbon, molasses, chocolate, oak and some char. Tastes of dark chocolate, cocoa, bourbon, oak, vanilla, slightly burnt molasses, figs, coffee and roasted malts. Full bodied for a porter, lightly carbonated, creamy mouth feel with a slightly sweet finish.Drinks more like a stout than a porter and I'm more than good with that.

Thanks to @cjgiant for the start today!

Today is a cookie day for me, thanks to the good BA @Dragginballs76

    First up,

Beer: 8th Anniversary (Pecan Cookie Stout)
Brewery: Westbrook Brewing Co. (Mt. Pleasant, SC)
    ABV: 9%

Pouring from a 22 oz. bottle into a whiskey tumbler glass, this beer pours out pitch black and thick, like motor oil. It forms a thin, mocha colored crown before noisily dissipating to nothing more than a misty island. 4

The nose carries a boozy, fudge like chocolate backed by a thick, syrupy sweetness. Slight vanilla present with an almost undetectable nutmeg or cinnamon as an accent. Pleasant, but underwhelming. 3.5

The taste brings those spices to the front. Definite cinnamon and nutmeg for me, with more pronunciation than the nose. It still has that somewhat boozy, fudge like chocolate in there. Darker, sweet malts that show some resemblance of dark bread. Caramel notes as an accent along with slightly roasted pecans that would be completely undetected if tasting blindly. Almost a pie crust presence. Vanilla not as much of a major player in the flavor as it is in the mouthfeel, just adding a nice creamy presence. 4

The spices bring a little sting to the tongue before the vanilla can bring that creaminess to smooth it out for the rest of the ride. Finishes dry, like the crust of a pie. Medium-thick body and moderate carbonation that works well with the spices. 4.25

Overall, I would’ve liked for this to bring the pecan presence with more prominence, but I do like the layers it brings and the winter spices were a nice touch to it. 4

Thanks again Mike for a chance to try this treat!

Cheers NBS’rs! I should be back with one more later.

75 degrees here today and Spring is in the air, especially pollen . . .

Deep canary yellow verging on gold color with good white cap and lacing.

Slightly tart, slightly sweet aroma of ripe apricots. Not much else there in the way of grain or hops, but the apricot scent is pleasant.

Taste is a good deal more flavorful than the scent. Both tart and sweet are equally in focus on the same plane. Fruit sharpness is blunted by fruit sweetness in a way that is more off setting than balancing. Clean, simple flavors that highlight apricot in all it's glory.

    Medium texture with balancing carbonation.

This is a very pleasing Summery sort of brew that strikes me as more a refreshant than food accompaniment.

Good Morning NBS'ers. Lost an hour of sleep, no biggie for me, I never get much anyway.

I'm pretty psyched up, I scored a couple of tickets to see Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band in Sunrise, Florida next Sunday night. It's been a long time since I saw him play, he says it's his final tour, so I thought WTF! Spent the morning packing and planning an unexpected road trip from Nothern Illinois to sunny southern Florida. Looking forward to taking the ragtop out of the garage and getting the top down.

So now I'll take an hour and enjoy this fine RBA stout from a very local brewer.

Pours a thick dark brown, small khaki colored head, minimal lacing, glass has a nice oily residue.
Aroma: Chocolate, vanilla, coffee and molasses.
Taste: Taste follows the aroma, just a hint of spice from the rye.
Feel: Not quite "chewy", but a nice texture, carbonation is spot-on for the style.
Overall: IMHO, this compares favorably with the best BA stouts. It's nice to see a local brewer nail it. I scored it @ 4.49

    Cheers!

Checking out this 11.5% imperial stout from Grimm...

Coffee Coconut Icing on the Cake...
Black pour into a pint kicks up a tan foam cap a few fingers high that cascades down, leaving ample lacing down the glass... Real nice coffee stout action here - despite the whole cake and frosting thing, the sweetness is restrained, and you get a smooth bittersweet chocolate element and a richly roasted fresh coffee flavor, perhaps lightly sweetened by sugar and cream, but nothing more... Coconut expresses a bit on the finish, as a chewy, woody, sweet flavor... Medium-full bodied and smooth, with a whiff of drying char toward the back end... Features Kieni AA Kenyan coffee from Sey Coffee in Brooklyn... Very nice...

Much like you I have not seen Bob Seger in years. I was looking at tickets here, he is playing Jones Beach this summer. I was shocked to see the cheapest seats before fees are $107.50. I could not justify paying that price. If it truly is his last tour I will miss seeing him again.

    Howdy, folks!

The weather is officially in full crazy spring mode here in the Brazos Valley, meaning all plans for outdoor activites are in constant flux. It's warmed up into the high 70s/low 80s the past couple days, allowing me to air out poor Huevos the puppy dog who HATES the cold and to get to the golf course for much-needed practice. Right now I've got chicken and bacon-wrapped jalapenos on the BBQ pit, and the sun is out and heating things up.

Found a new beer a minute ago. Most of you have seen this one before:
Rogue Ales' Dead Guy Ale, a German-style maibock

Saw this about two months ago at the getting place, also saw it was canned in June 2018 but bought a 6-pack anyway. I've been wanting to try it for some time, and I'm glad I bought the sixer because it's a lovely brew. As you pour you can smell the yummy barley, and while it is a bit of a malt bomb in the flavor, the earthy hops still have enough life to do a bit of kicking and screaming. At times it tastes like orange peel, others like caramel and others like a yeasty peach.

Howdy, NBS regulars and new folk.
It is a surprisingly snowy day here despite a week of bright, fairly warm days. So, I am going to be hanging out here watching it dump and trying a couple of new local beers. I'll be visiting my family in the states next week so I've gotta make this weekend count. You never know, though, I might be able to drop in for a beer next week. We'll see.
The first beer today is from 4 Origines. They are a pretty new brewery very close to chez-nous. I was wholly unimpressed with them when they opened, but they seem to have gotten their system/process/whatever dialed in a bit better and the last couple I've tried have been good. This one is a porter brewed with cacao from a nearby chocolate factory place (there's no way it is as cool as it sounds, though, thanks to Roald Dahl).
Ugh... That "it's" is fucking painful to look at...
    Let's see how it tastes.
It pours clear ruby-black with a nice creamy tan head. The nose is inviting with straightforward chocolate, fruity notes and general sweet mocha-ness. Flavor follows. It is choclatey and sweet with fruity English yeast underneath. It is pretty light and easy to drink. No detectable alcohol. Nice beer that showcases chocolate flavors without tasting like a candy bar.

    Here is my official review.

    Santé!

Of course, MN has only the one NHL team, ... but high school hockey is a big deal here.

Our state high school tournaments just wrapped up for the girls and the boys. The boys high school hockey tournament is, traditionally, to MN what the boys high school basketball tournament is to Indiana.

At the college level, MN used to have lively in-state rivalries as well (and I should mention a very intense rivalry between the U of M and the U. of North Dakota), but the rivalries that involve the U of M have faded to a shadow of their former selves since the Big 10 (the original conference that can't count) added men's hockey as a conference sport.

Still, amateur hockey - including non-scholastic and adult - is a very big deal in MN.

PS: I'm going out to try to clear some of the wet, heavy snow we got lat night. I'll be ready for a beer after that...

Happy Sunday, BAs. I picked up today’s new “imperial milk porter with coffee” at the brewery yesterday. What’s an imperial milk porter, you ask? It’s a milk stout. Style descriptions these days are getting stupid.

The beer pours dark brown, approaching black, with a massive and lasting mocha-colored foam head.

It has a big chocolatey, nutty aroma with dark roast coffee and milk layered on top.

It’s very sweet tasting, but the sweetness is cut a bit by the coffee. Chocolate, sugar, milk and coffee are what stand out.

It’s medium bodied with a milky feel and slow-building carbonation.

This was much sweeter than I expected, but I drink my coffee black. It’s still very enjoyable.

I agree with you about their labels. They make some tasty beers. Do you have King Misanthrope lined up by chance? That's my favorite one.

A second offering from East Rock, this was a brewery only offering and quite a good one.
Von Trapp still is my favorite domestic dunkel, that said this offering is quite a delight.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle purchased at the brewery into that big ole .5l mug!
A - Tawny colored, solid carbonation feeds a thick off white crown.
S - Warm brown bread, light brown sugar, caramel, lightly roasted malts
T - The aromatics do lead in here, with the addition of sweet raisin, and touch of toffee.
M - Light on the palate, sweet and nicely dry,
O - A very good Dunkel, well balanced and a pleasure to drink.
