    Hi everyone, happy NBS.
Drinking a brew in proper glassware. Both provided to me from @thebeers during the current round of the NBS BIF. Thanks Arthur! Awesome beer and awesome stein!

Helles Other People from Tired Hands.

My view of the beer is from while pouring and the top view of the glass. It’s clear and golden with a thick pillowy head that hangs around in white floating foam islands. Rings of foam can be seen sticking to the inside of my stein.

Aroma is faint, but includes some crackery malt.

Lots of biscuit malt, layer of sweetness, grain and cracker. Smooth and crisp, hint of noble hops, slightest bit of citrus zest.

Clean and dry, moderate carbonation and medium body.

Overall a tasty brew, I think it is on point to style and doesn’t hint towards Americanization of traditional European lager. Thanks Arthur!

Good morning New BSers! Thanks, @cjgiant, for starting today's thread. I won't comment on federal/state/local taxes this morning. Today's new beer, however,

    $ 6.56(Including tax and discount)/350 mL can ($ 0.556/oz) from Spec’s #100, DeZavala, San Antonio. Reviewed 3/24/19.
“YL.18.02d” on bottom of the can. On shelf in store. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 42 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
    Appearance – 3.75.
    Body – Yellow, hazy.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.5 cm, aggressive center pour), white, medium density, average retention, diminishing to a seven to fifteen mm lacy ring and a thin complete layer with a large rocky island.
Lacing – Fair. Some torn curtain lacing remains on the inside of the glass.
First pour – Light yellow, clear.
Aroma – 3 - Weak citrus and hints of soap; not particularly appealing.
Flavor – 3 - The nose carries into the flavor with the citrus/soap predominating. There is a bit of maltiness and bitterness at the end. No alcohol (5.5% ABV), no dimethylsulfide, no diacetyl.
Palate – 3 – Medium, watery, soft carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 3 – While this does not taste like a typical lager, that is probably because of the yuzu fruit. I’ve only had a yuzu-based beer once before and remember it as being a much brighter citrus experience.

    Rating 3.05, rDev -20.2%.

Edit: I wrote this earlier this AM, but neglected to hit the "post" button. Duuh.

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. More unsolicited attacks on me as usual this week. Made a nice new beer haul this afternoon. Was not able to hit up any breweries this weekend for growler fills, but I am going back to Ohio next weekend for my Grandfather's interment; so there should be some new stuff to find down there.

    Beer:

Incredible milkshake sour. Fantastic lasting head retention/thick soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of huge sour/tart/tangy pink guava, peach, apricot, fruit skin/seed/pits, lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, pear, melon, red/green apple, white grape/wine, hay, straw, and grass; with moderate vanilla, cream, wheat, cracker, white bread dough malts; light peppercorn, lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruit/lactic tart/sourness, fruit tang, and light spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; very creamy, silky, grainy wheat/lactose; some lactic acid and fruit tang/tannins in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing acidic/tangy fruit dryness, no pucker. Very smooth, pretty refreshing, not overly lactic, 5.5%. Amazingly juicy/jammy fruit and balanced Lacto complexity; with an awesome lactose, and pale/wheat malt backbone against acidity. Light residual sweetness with lingering dryness. Another easy winner, loved it just as much as the other ones I've had from them. 4.28

Been on a Deathcore marathon all weekend. Started on Friday with a Spotify playlist.

Well, I did have a few cellar* options available, and only the price tag was keeping me at bay. I prefer to share or gift big bottles like this. But then again, this was a relatively easy shelf grab now that they've got distro here, so I don't know when the time to share it would really come up.

And besides, if New Beer Sunday isn't the day to ignore price tags, then when is? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Against the Grain Bo & Luke

I really didn't need to set this thing out of the fridge ahead of time; that wax cap was freaking ridiculous! Pictured are the tools of the trade used to eventually unleash its apparently sacredly guarded precious liquid.

It's hard to tell where the history of this beer ends and the modern beer begins. It's obviously no longer a collaboration (you can see the De Molen stamp on the bottle on their website, for example, which is not present on current bottles). Is it still aged in Pappy barrels? And for only three months? Are all the "bourbon inspired" ingredients (including rye and corn) smoked on cherry wood, or just the barley?

Regardless of the questions that surround it, I'm going in, if not blind, then at least uncaring when it comes to rating and reviewing the beer. I wouldn't rate it any higher or lower knowing that Pappy barrels are (were?) used; I care how the final product tastes.

And that taste is, quite frankly, really good. I had a lot of words to say about it in my review, and this entry is already lengthy, so I will summarize here and skimp on the detail: really nice smoke, good use of the barrel, and a nice traditional RIS base beneath it all.

That full review is below. I think my ratings are fairly set, although I am open to adjustment as the brew warms and opens up (in particular the nose).

Pretty nice day on the Western Slope, sunny, raining, cloudy, around 46 at the trailhead. Having a pretty tasty brew, very drinkable at the ABV., nice to see them around here. Might finish up watching Star Trek Original Series. Will be back with another new brew later on.

    Beer #2
Finally getting the chance to try this beast!
Pours a turbid golden yellow with a nice 1/2 off white head that settles leaving thin ring and lots of "world map" lacing.
Huge aromas of yes-ripe pineapples, oranges and tropical fruits.
Taste follows with ripe oranges, mangos, pineapples, lemon and lime.
Medium bodied with prickly carbonation, no hint of alcohol, slightly sweet, hop oily but drying finish.
A blank canvas brushed with all the hoppy beauty of the citra hop.
A delicious brew that begs to answer the question 'which came first? The King Sue or the Orange Julius?'

Taxes? I did 'em awhile ago, and this beer is an indirect result of that.
I was a bit apprehensive , hearing the unpleasant surprises of some. About 1/3 the way through it, I remembered that I used the IRS calculator right after the tax bill was passed.(I don't trust anybody describing their own program - I need to check myself.) Along with the general uncertainty, I picked up an additional side maintenance job(on top of existing one) , from one of my landscaper customers, who is easing into retirement. It's on the side of a steep hill, so harder for him now, and a literal marathon from here (26.2mi), so my boss didn't want it either (for the business). Anyway, just to be safe ,I had extra $ taken out each week. whew!

As it turns out, I guessed pretty well, and ended up about the same as last year with the federal return, & a just slightly lower refund with the state.(-$30) :sunglasses:

That brings me to today's beer. I was semi-celebrating getting taxes over with, & the positive result , (middle of beer #3? - a warning there. :stuck_out_tongue::grin:) & ran across a plug from Plan B , for their "Hive" membership. OK, so go ahead - what is this? I've had a couple of their beers and they were splendid , but..... usually $8-$14 for 375ml/12.7oz , on the rare occasions that I find them. Soooo...…. *more calculations  = …..$5 ea,+/- + some swag, 4 times/yr?* :sunglasses: OK let's do this.

    First shipment came this week of 1 - 750ml, 4 - 375ml , & some swag . (Nice coffee cup, btw.)
This is the first of them , Bloody . The first thought was " carbonated Bloody Mary" . Nope!
Much better than that , not that that wouldn't have been plenty good.

I'll start at the end, so you can imagine it as I go : overall, a tropical fruit sour, leaning mango, with Bloody Mary accents , on the perimeter. Very well-balanced , and everything with a light, but noticeable touch. About half way through, I started warming up from the pepper/horseradish heat. It was a very gradual thing that snuck up on me, but when my neck started to sweat, & the first nose-drip hit, I realized it was from the beer. (Awesome! - Sign of good peppers!:sunglasses:)

Look : orangey-gold (think tangerine+pineapple juice) with a little bit of very fine white head, that leaves a ring & lacing. I.e., as expected from a sour/wild ale.

Smell : Here there is a distinct divide between the glass & the bottle,at first, though the bottle now is same. Popping the cap : tabasco sauce & dried tomatoes . In the glass : lactic sourness, fresh lemon (from lemon basil) , green pepper, & swirling it, some fresh celery leaf & tropical fruit mix.

Taste : Sour mango+apple is predominant. Some tangy dried-then-rehydrated tomato flavor follows, with some soft pepper heat slowly building. Then some bright vegetal flavor, presumably from celery & basils . Then , just as swallow commences some green pepper, hot pepper, & horseradish flavor. Maybe beets?. (Brings back memories of freshly-made spring horseradish.:sunglasses:) Some brief woody/earthy flavor - from beets, horseradish, or both?
Some light, sharp bitterness weaves its way through all of that. I'm not a fan of most beers brewed with the pepper(& horseradish?) in it - I'd rather add my own - , as it usually ends up overwhelming everything else, or is barely noticeable. This avoids those pitfalls, & is ~perfect in that regard.

Feel: You know this is an unusual beer, in that I might have spent more verbiage, in the review, on the feel than anything else  Short version : Light , slightly oily [ - Oh. 7.2%abv, not the 4+% that I was expecting] , with light, very fine carbonation , that finishes with a needle-stab on the tip of the tongue. Towards the end some hot pepper burn at the back of the throat, & tip of the tongue, & heat + prickle from the horseradish.

Not often that I do an Arkansas brewed beer for NBS, but this one is very worthy. One of the best hazy hops being brewed here in state. My target in the NBS BIF better be ready for some.

Great balance of dank pine and mango passionfruit. Mouthfeel is right where it needs to be. Nice lingering lightly bitter finish. Juicy goodness.

    Cheers guys!

Excellent English porter. Fantastic head retention/lacing. Aromas and flavors of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark/brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of toffee, molasses, dark fruit, smoke, wood, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light herbal, woody, grassy, peppery hop; and roast/charred bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body; creamy, silky, bready, grainy malts; light sticky hops and chalky char/roast in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering bitter/roasted dryness, no cloying, acrid, astringency. Very smooth, minimal warming 5.9%. Not overly bitter/charred. Very clean and rich English malt complexity and cocoa nib flavors; with great earthy hop presence/balance, and mild English yeast character. Really spot on stuff. 4.03

L- The beer pours a slightly hazy golden. The head is two and a half fingers of white foam which recedes to a thin ring with large island. Lacing is present around the glass and lasts.
S- The aroma is mild to moderate candi sugar sweetness and yeast must.
T- The taste is less sweet than the nose. There is still a touch of sweetness which is cut by the mustiness of the yeast. There is light alcohol presence and some breadiness which lingers in the aftertaste.
F-Mouthfeel is medium to medium full with some accompanying stickiness. Carbonation is light which accentuates the thicker mouthfeel.
O- A more than solid, no frills, domestic triple. One that I would drink again.

Greetings, NBS friends. I have a couple of beers tonight, one from a relatively unknown brewery that’s doing some really cool stuff out of Wisconsin, the second an iconic beer I’ve been patiently waiting to try. Tonight’s the night.

    First, though, this DDH DIPA.

    4.21/5 rDev +3.2%
    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

When I saw this included lactose, an adjunct that I’ve found to be ..... distracting when it’s added to hoppy beers, I hesitated, but my beer store hookup recommended it highly, I plunged in.

The pour is consistent with so many DIPA’s today, an exceptionally hazy pineapple-colored beer (but no milkshake) with a dense, creamy white head. The nose has pineapple aromas, and there’s also spicy tropical aromas with mango and papaya most prominent.

The citrusy fruits are center stage on the taste, but instead of a distraction, the lactose actually helps balance this a bit. I was really pleasantly surprised, and happy to try another really well-executed beer from these guys that fly below the radar a bit, similar to Central Waters. Don’t sleep on them - they’re the real deal, IMHO.

More new brut IPAs. Pigeon Hill. This was oustadning. Fantastic rocky head retention/thick soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big mandarin orange juice, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, guava, blueberry, gooseberry, citrus peel/zest, and light peppercorn/pine hops; with moderate cracker, white bready malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/zest, herbal, floral, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation, light-medium body, and fairly crisp/clean finishing. Balanced bready/grainy malts and sticky hops in the mouthfeel. Minimal lingering resins/rinds. Light-moderate increasing bitter dryness, no hop astringency. Very smooth/soft, pretty refreshing, not aggressive, minimal warming 6.5%. Amazing Mosaic/Citra profile. Very juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hop complexity; with a great balancing clean pale malt backbone. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp dryness. They nailed it as expected. 4.18
