As I grow older, I've taken on a more disciple role, bringing complete noobs to their first DLD the last four years. While I miss the larger meet up days with my high school and college friends (2010-2013), these recent years have still proved that when the weather is halfway decent, DLD is still a great fest to attend.

With that being said, here's some early good reminders you'll see a few times between here and May:

    - Drink rinse water
    - Have a good meal before drinking
    - Take a break during the day to re-hydrate and eat
    - No need to be dismissive if someone offers a pour of something you don't want. A simple, "No thanks, I'm good" is just fine.
    - When communicating with friends, it's better to text as the metal makes phone calls useless
    - Always say your pleases and thank yous
    - Use the frozen bottle trick to keep your bottle-share bottles cold
    - Sunscreen doesn't hurt
    - All and all, just chill and don't worry about the variants. There are hundreds of great beers you'll never try. All we are is dust in the wind after all.

As someone that hasn't got to go the last 2 years, I haven't been around for the "limited ounce" policy on beer. Do they actually check how much you have? All they did when I went was say we couldn't carry any open bottles in (which is hilarious).

    TL;DR

Can I bring my cooler on wheels? How big can my backpack be? Do things cost money? Can I pick up my bottles in a later group? How do I pick the variant I want?

I'd add only take out your phone when sitting or standing over grass.

Few things I've noticed and/or learned in my 4 trips, man i feel like just yesterday was my first DLD, time flies.

Definitely place the tote bag with bottles immediately in your backpack, still see the same thing happen year after year with bottles falling out of bags and breaking.

If you dont like the variant you received, there's a good chance you can swap with people by the exit where bottle pickup is. Two years in a row now i got scotch and managed to do a 1 for 1 swap at the fest, fully expecting to wind up with scotch again lol.

If you can fasten your tasting glass to a lanyard, that's a plus, a visible glass greatly increases chances of people offering pours.

From what I remember it seemed like the security was just kind of eyeballing it to make sure you weren't bringing in a 30 rack or something

They had people yelling about it to the line, but they're definitely not doing math. It seemed to vary based on the person checking you in. Mine didn't look at all, saw a couple people get turned away.

I would say shoot for one bottle over, worst case you pass it around outside the fest.

    My couple topics:
    1) Last year, they basically counted bottles. If you had multiple 12 oz bottles, you'd have to explain to them how you were under the limit.
    2) If someone with you didn't have bottles, they'd let you in with your allotment and their allotment.
    3) The open bottle in your hand didn't count against your allotment. (that one caught me by surprise)
    4) If you don't want a pour, or feel bad turning one down, just hide your cup.
    5) If you're hoping for a pour and aren't at a table sharing, then walk around with your favorite hyper local beer, or a beer with name recognition, an empty glass, and make eye contact, say hi to people, be social! It's amazing how well it works. Don't be shy.
