Today marks my two year anniversary as co-host (if that’s the title) of New Beer Sunday. When Maria and Dave asked me to do it, I immediately said yes, and then almost as quickly panic set in. I don’t like to write. I never really enjoyed writing papers in college, feeling I covered the topics in a superficial way, at best. I did find writing articles for medical journals easier, because that was all in stating facts and drawing conclusions. So it was with some degree of trepidation that I set out to do New Beer Sunday every other weekend.

A funny thing happened. I actually enjoy doing this. I’ve written some thoughtful pieces and some really asinine ones, but it’s been a blast. I enjoy seeing responses to what I have written, and I am more than gratified with the number of people who take time to contribute to New Beer Sunday. This is one of my favorite places to be on a Sunday.

Let’s drink a new beer today. Let’s write about its appearance, aroma, taste, mouthfeel, and overall impression. Let’s have thoughtful discussions of the beers. Let’s enjoy ourselves.

    Cheers!

    Cheers to You!
    I've got a couple new-to-me offerings for later today;
after a night's rest and a day's work, of course.
    G'night!

Thank you @lordofthewiens for starting up at the witching hour when I’m still frisky and dynamic. I try not to cross post but love this thread and still have this new beer in my glass right now. Thanks again @vabeerguy for this gem.

Looks like a glass of fresh, bright OJ. Nose follows with tangerine and lemon juice out of the plastic lemon shaped mini-bottle. Flavor is more of the same with grapefruit and orange and lemon pez. Mouthfeel is thinner than expected but I believe that has to do with the triple hopping. Very dry finish like a mouthful of orange and lemon pixie dust. Serious Citra bomb. Overall the 4.5 range on all counts.

Was in a live music hip hop band a decade ago in Bozeman, MT. We also had a DJ show at a local bar once a week. Our friend that helped with the show went on to follow the path and make more music and produced the beat for this song. Saw him last on this album release tour. Both are great guys.

    Hi!
This will be my first NBS beer, and my first worded review at all. Have had about 80 different non-alcoholic beers, on the second round I will numberrate them, I'm at about 30 right now, and then complement with written reviews. So will have them at least the third time before writing a review, for really getting into the beers. But now it's having the beer the first time ever, as it's supposed to be itt! You may excuse my inexperience.

    Let's get to it...

It's Mikkeller's Henry and his Science:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/13307/355151/

It's defined as a Flemish Primitive, 0.3% ABV

Pours pale yellow, mild haze, with one inch of head. Aroma a bit grapefruit, pleasant. Taste lemon, really no detectable bitterness, juicy. Mouthfeel ok. Overall not on the better half of the beers I've had. L:4 S:4 T:3.5 F:3.75 O:3.5, all in all 3.68

Thanks for getting us started today, congrats on two years in the NBS driver's seat, and especially thanks for keeping this tradition alive as well as Maria and I were certain you (and Craig) would do. Cheers to you @lordofthewiens, and here's to many more years of NBS.

Well, I am getting ready for work today. My unretirement is not exactly enjoyable, especially on days like yesterday when it was super busy at the recycle center, and we filled a thirty yard roll off with steel in one day. Uggh. Sure is good for getting me ready for the ultimate thirst quencher and mood restorer we all know as beer, though, and I am certain to be ready to join you later.

Am collaborating after work with Frank R. to finally put music to song lyrics I wrote in tribute to a local legend who died tragically two years ago, and written in part with words and inspiration from a journal page his mother found when she finally got the courage to go through his things. Definitely have a new beer to share with you guys. See you then!

    New Beer Sunday: American Lager

Mornin’ NBSers with an alert for fans of beer that hit the spot, over and over and over again. Also a thanks to @lordofthewiens for his startups the last two years. Looking forward to many more.

The weather today is definitely expected to be changeable with some rain showers this morning, when we are also seeing the expected high in the upper 50s. Then as the rain moves off the temperatures slide down to an expected low of 30 tonight.

This morning’s new beer is the Cape May Lager. The brewery says of this beer that it is “…perfect for ball games, barbecues, and winding down after a long day at work.” Well, I’m not doing any of those but let see how it is as a start to the day.

My review, in progress until the beer is finished or breakfast is finished baking in the oven, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/25890/399141/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors of this beer are mild but definitely present. There’s some malt and it’s sweetness as well as some earthy, herbal and spicy character from the hops. They all play nicely together and the balance is such that none overpowers the others. Enjoyable, drinkable and I am already wishing I had another for when this one is finished. Got to give the brewer credit since in my view they’ve hit their target. This would indeed be a good beer to have on hand when you are entertaining friends or just want to chill out with a cold one.

    Cheers, all!

Two Roads "Cruise Control", a German Helles

So it's early in the day here in Pennsylvania but I woke up singing the Doors song "Roadhouse Blues", which has arguably the greatest rock and roll lyric ever sung . . .

I woke up this morning and I got myself a beer . . (click to listen)

Yes I did, and it's this new Helles from Two Roads. The only thing missing was a piece of cold pizza to go with this 16oz canned on 2019-02-22

A - Very clear gold with a 1.5-finger white head and decent lace.

S - Pils malt, white grape, honey, floral. Very pleasant.

T - Fresh white bread with a smidgen of white grape jelly. There's some pleasant, noble spice and an appropriate light bitterness in the finish. Very well balanced.

M - Light-medium body and medium carbonation. Refreshing but with some substance going down.

O - Very true to style. A showcase for Pils malt. I'm glad for the little bit of white grape sweetness that I associate with a good Helles. IIt'll be fun to try this side-by-side with some of my other favorites in this style.

Happy New "Don't Call Me a 'Clown' Until You've Drank a CAN of Beer in My Shoes" Beer Sunday (Week 736)!

First off, CANgratulations on reaching the two-year milestone! If you ever need a stand-in or begin to CANtemplate stepping down, please CANsider me as a CANdidate. I like to write & have many beer bylines under my belt.

This week's brewery horizontal takes me to a brewery whose initial irreverence garnered the ire of some, but they have now become a bit of a fixture. I am especially heartened by their distro to our area & by the number of beers that they are putting out in CANs.

My first CANincided with my morning coffee:

    A BoPils Battle Royale!!!!

It has been a while since I have conducted a side-by-side taste test so today is time for another.

A few weeks ago I discussed my favorite (commercial) Bohemian Pilsner of Golden Pheasant. A quick reminder:

Below is how this beer is discussed on the US importer’s (Stawski) website:

    “NA ZDRAVIE, SLOVENSKO!

Also known as its English translation, “Golden Pheasant” this beer is Slovakia’s most popular beer. It’s the most exported Slovak beer and can be found in such countries as the USA, Canada, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Moldavia, and Kazakhstan. Over a million hectolitres are sold all over the world per year. In 2006, its 12% version was awarded the best beer in its category by the Slovak Union of Beer and Malt Producers.

    BOHEMIAN PILSNER

Geographically, Slovakia is an obvious location for great lager beers. They have access to the best hops, grains and softest water in the world. This and a long brewing tradition is what makes for this very special product. It exhibits a great balance between nutty malt flavors, aromatics and delicious noble hop varieties. The finish is clean and refreshing, making Golden Pheasant an easy beer to drink.

Golden Pheasant is rated as Highly Recommended by the Beverage Testing Institute and was awarded a Silver Medal in the World Beer Championships.”

    http://stawskiusa.com/golden-pheasant/

And to have a Battle Royale we need a competitor so in the ‘other corner’ will be my recently homebrewed Bohemian Pilsner. I brew a batch of this beer every year.

From an ingredient perspective this is a fairly simple beer:

    · Mostly Moravian Pilsner Malt but there is some Vienna Malt for depth of color/flavor and augmenting the body of the beer

    · Sterling Hops for the bittering addition

    · Czech Saaz hops generously used for both flavor and aroma additions

    · Bohemian Lager yeast

While the ingredient list is simple the brewing process for making a Pilsner (lager) is not so simple – lots of process steps needed.

    Are you ready to RUMBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Served in my FW Pivo Pils glasses:

    Appearance:

Golden Pheasant: Golden colored with a three finger white head.

Jack’s BoPils: Slightly darker golden colored with a three finger white head.

    Aroma:

Golden Pheasnt: One the initial sniff I pick up a bit of struck match (hydrogen sulfide) which is quite pleasant. There is also some spicy/herbal hop aroma and a crackery malt aroma.

Jack’s BoPils: A prominent combination of bready and spicy/herbal aromas.

    Taste:

Golden Pheasant: The flavor very much follows the nose. A pleasing combination of crackery malt and spicy/herbal hop flavors. There is a firm bitterness.

Jack’s BoPils: The flavors follow the nose with notable flavors of bready and spicy/herbal. There is a firm bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Golden Pheasant: This beer is medium bodied with an off-dry finish.

    Jack’s BoPils: Ditto.

    Overall:

Golden Pheasant: This beer is very good! A very enjoyable combination of crackery malt and spicy/herbal hop flavors.

Jack’s BoPils: This beer is also very good. A depth of bready malt flavor accompanied with a notable spicy/herbal flavor.

My wife was watching me as was conducting this side-by-side taste test. She requested a taste of both beers (she was doing this blind). I told her since I had an ‘extra’ beer she could have one. She selected Jack’s BoPils.

    Cheers!

Good morning New BSers! @lordofthewiens, thanks for starting us every other week for the last two years - I find your intros both interesting and enlightening. You are definitely correct about the difference between writing for a peer-refereed peer-read journal versus writing for the hoi-polli. (WOW! Does that sound elitist/pretentious!) Yeah, it's easier when you present study results, statistical analysis, and rational for your conclusions, when your readers' perceptions do not depend on the turn of a phrase or on their preconceived interpretation of a single word. But then, that's what makes writing so much fun - lead them down the garden path then bludgeon them with a cleverly disguised thesis. Anyway, it's good to have you starting threads.
@beer_beer - Welcome! It's always good to hear from our fellow drinkers from across the pond - to get your views on beers we'll probably never see here and beers with which we're probably all too familiar.

Well, for my contribution to today's NBS, my New Breakfast Beer:

    $ 18.23 (Including shipping)/22 oz bottle ($ 0.829/oz) from Tavour, Seattle, WA. Reviewed 3/31/19.
“Bottled 01/17/19” at top of label, “No. 0049/2000, Ghost 699”. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 54 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
    Appearance – 3
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque. When held to the light, amber and translucent.
Head – Small (Maximum one cm, aggressive center pour), fizzy, gone in a few seconds leaving no cap.
    Lacing – None
    First pour – Amber, clear.
Aroma – 4 – Begins with the predominant odor of dried “dark fruit” and ends with a hint of alcohol.
Flavor – 4 - Begins with some “dark fruit”. Allowing it to warm in my mouth allows the alcohol (9.0% ABV) to numb my tongue but doesn’t contribute to the flavor. Ends sweet, just short of cloying. No diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide, no hops.
Palate – 4 – Full, almost syrupy, soft carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 3.75 – The lack of any head other than fleeting, along with the absence of lacing, lowers the overall rating. At 9.0% ABV the alcohol level would permit a head, but I guess this is just protein-starved. The aroma is fine as is the flavor. Overall, somewhat disappointing.
    Rating 3.89, rDev -7.2%.

While drinking this, I grabbed my handy dandy road atlas and looked up Purcellville, VA. It's closer to me than places I routinely go for beer purchases. Road trip!

    (Out my front door)
(A tree in my backyard that is trying to bloom, but now covered in ice and snow)

    Anyways, onto the beer!

Beer: Triple Barrel Big Bad Baptist (2017 release)
Brewery: Epic Brewing (Salt Lake City, Utah & Denver, Colorado)
    ABV: 11.8%
    [IMG]
Pouring from a 22 oz. bottle from 2017, this beer pours out not quite pitch black, but very dark brown. It forms two fingers worth of frothy, thick and creamy, peanut butter fudge colored crown that leaves a heavy wall of lacing as it slowly recedes. Epic does great on making sure these beers look beautiful. I honestly wouldn’t ask for more from this. 5

The smell brings that tropical, coconut like rum to the front line while backing it with faint chocolate. I hate to say it, but the coconut in there is almost reminding me of something medicinal; like an artificial coconut or being at the dentist for some reason or like if they made a coconut cough syrup. It’s off putting to me. It could be the rum too. It’s not letting much else through for me, either. 2.75

The taste comes in an absolute mess. Were these infected? Or is it really just the way everything is mixing for me? Whew, I’m getting an array of things, from cherry, cough syrup, artificial coconut, tropical suntan lotion rum. I think the only quality that isn’t bothering me is the very faint chocolate. This just tastes cheap. No whiskey or coffee detection. 2.75

It has a cherry like tartness to it. A dry kind of burn, but cough syrupy sweetness. 3

Overall, it’s tough to finish a glass for me, let alone a bottle. I hate that too, as I am usually in love with the Baptist series and fully expected being high on the rating here because of my experiences with the others. What a strikeout. I’m done for the day. 2.75

Can’t wait to see what you bring to the share, and I hope for your sake it’s better than my experience! Whew.

    Cheers NBS!

Nicely done. Ok so geographically Bavaria is close to Slovakia. What’s the practical difference between the styles? You noted cracker and firm bitterness, I find Red Oaks Bavarian Lager a bit too sweet for my tastes. Would something along the lines of Trauger be close to a Bohemian beer?
