Be that as it may, there never was any difference between Bitter and Pale Ale,as I said they both come out of the same fermenter.
Brewers assign different names for the same brew according to its destination.
Many times exactly the same beer has been labelled differently.Guinness West India Porter and Foreign Export Stout.Scotch Ale outside Scotland and Strong Ale in it.
The Head Brewer of Bass once described his beer as a Bitter,a Pale Ale and an IPA in the same conversation.

Just checked out my beers ratings and American IPAs are at the top of my list for total ratings, followed by Belgian Saisons and American Imperial IPAs. But, Russian Imperial Stouts were my highest rated style, followed by American Imperial Stout and then American Wild Ale.

    Full disclosure:
I have to try way more IPAS then I would like because I'm in the retail liquor business, I'm the resident beer geek at our store, and stouts and sours (the real ones) are are my favorites.

Is there anyone out there with similar tastes?
I'll show you mine, if you show me yours!

My Top Ten (in quantity) Rated Styles:
    American IPA | 323 | 11.06% | 4.07
    Belgian Saison | 274 | 9.38% | 4.15
    American Imperial IPA | 256 | 8.77% | 4.15
    American Imperial Stout | 220 | 7.53% | 4.27
    American Wild Ale | 207 | 7.09% | 4.22
    New England IPA | 155 | 5.31% | 4.2
    American Pale Ale (APA) | 119 | 4.08% | 4
    Russian Imperial Stout | 79 | 2.71% | 4.34
    American Porter | 50 | 1.71% | 4.1
    Leipzig Gose | 47 | 1.61% | 4.01

Out of 693 beers it looks like I'm into stouts. I'm shocked to see IPAs made my top 10 as I'm really not into them. Realizing my preference for stouts, I made it a point to try all 111 styles.

    American Imperial Stout | 149 | 21.5% | 4.12
    English Sweet / Milk Stout | 52 | 7.5% | 3.96
    Russian Imperial Stout | 43 | 6.2% | 4.02

American IPA, DIPA, and Imperial Stout have been on the top of my list forever. NEIPA shot up into the top 10 in only 2-3 years from basically having one for the first time. Tons became available very quickly.

    American IPA | 747 | 8.97% | 3.99
    American Imperial IPA | 502 | 6.03% | 4.08
    American Imperial Stout | 456 | 5.48% | 4.24
    American Wild Ale | 412 | 4.95% | 4.11
    Belgian Saison | 366 | 4.4% | 4.05
    New England IPA | 292 | 3.51% | 4.13
    American Pale Ale (APA) | 282 | 3.39% | 3.96
    Fruit and Field Beer | 255 | 3.06% | 3.86

The ratio of styles is interesting. I’m noticing my top ten range from 5.74% to 2.28%. And so far, of a HUGE sample os four, we tend to think the stouts are better than the IPAs.

    American IPA | 73 | 5.74% | 3.7
    American Imperial Stout | 66 | 5.19% | 4.07
    Belgian Saison | 56 | 4.41% | 3.9
    American Wild Ale | 48 | 3.78% | 4.07
    Belgian Strong Dark Ale | 47 | 3.7% | 4
    American Imperial IPA | 47 | 3.7% | 3.9
    American Porter | 38 | 2.99% | 3.69
    Russian Imperial Stout | 36 | 2.83% | 4.07
    American Barleywine | 31 | 2.44% | 3.85
    Belgian Tripel | 29 | 2.28% | 3.97

I'll go out on a limb and say that my list might be the most eclectic...

    American IPA | 94 | 11.87% | 3.88
    German Märzen / Oktoberfest | 57 | 7.2% | 3.55
    American Imperial IPA | 50 | 6.31% | 4.08
    Russian Imperial Stout | 35 | 4.42% | 4.1
    American Pale Ale (APA) | 30 | 3.79% | 3.93
    American Adjunct Lager | 29 | 3.66% | 3.06
    American Imperial Stout | 29 | 3.66% | 4.19
    American Light Lager | 17 | 2.15% | 2.76
    American Porter | 16 | 2.02% | 3.82
    Belgian Strong Dark Ale | 15 | 1.89% | 4.12

I believe the number of beers rated suggest availability more than preference. I've had every Oktoberfest beer in my distribution area, and would have to trade to increase that number. Conversely, I could go to my local bottle shop and buy multiple mix six packs of IPA and double that number easily in a month or two.

Interesting. I'm not as surprised as others to see IPAs so common, even among people who don't love them, simply because they are nearly ubiquitous. Pretty much every American brewery offers one or more IPAs; not every one offers multiple milk stouts.

Mine, in order of # of ratings:

    American Imperial Stout | 282 | 12.56% | 4.18
    American IPA | 234 | 10.42% | 3.89
    American Imperial IPA | 215 | 9.58% | 4.09
    New England IPA | 97 | 4.32% | 4.24
    Russian Imperial Stout | 91 | 4.05% | 4.1
    Belgian Saison | 86 | 3.83% | 3.97
    American Pale Ale (APA) | 83 | 3.7% | 3.92
    American Wild Ale | 68 | 3.03% | 4.11
    English Sweet / Milk Stout | 49 | 2.18% | 3.94
    American Porter | 48 | 2.14% | 3.8

A little surprised to see American Imperial Stout well ahead of American IPA - but only a little. Stouts are clearly among my favorites (with 4 variations of stouts in my top 10, and American Stout being #11).

Of course ... the next three spots are IPAs, so .... yeah. Ratings-wise, I appear to be a touch generous toward NE IPAs. I think it's likely that I've simply had more "bad" stouts than bad NE IPAs (for my palate), which brings the average rating for the former down, even though stouts are probably my favorite overall style.

Looks like this thread was merged with a similar thread from last year. Now there is more data to compare, and with at least one person, there is data from before the style update. It is easy to geek-out on this stuff.

My bottom ten is boring, with several zeros, so I'm including the bottom ten with data, and included the zeros. It is much more a reflection of availability. Regardless, I'm noticing a lack of reviews of some styles I enjoy more than review. e.g. Dortmunder, Eisbock, and Kristalweizen. Now I have another summer project. (darn! ;-)

    European Export / Dortmunder | 1 | 0.08% | 4.13

    Japanese Happoshu | 0 | 0% | 0
    Robust Porter | 0 | 0% | 0
