Awhile ago, I remember reading about this style of glassware on here. Last year I stumbled on to some at a thrift store & bought one. Needless to say I quickly fell in love! It is the perfect shape, comfortable in the hand. A few days ago it broke while I was washing it so I rushed back to the store praying they still had some a year later. Low & behold, there were 6 of them just sitting there on the shelf! I bought them all. Now to my questions. Is anyone still making this glass? If not, what time period is it from? Does anyone else use this glass? How do you like it? Thanks in advance for any information! Cheers!
I recall getting a free glass in a style like that one at a local gas station when having maintenance work done on my car. That would have been in the early '70s. I had an oil change and a complete exhaust system installed, and ended up with 8 glasses because they gave you one for every $20 spent (or some similar amount). So that style has been around a long time.

It was called a "Hollow-Footed Goblet" in an ad in 1961 but I can't find other ads or references to them by that name. There are similar glasses called "Hollow Base Tumblers". (I also see mentions of a "Hollow Handled Beer Glass" ---? --- but no pic.) Much more common (and longer lived - 1950-1970s - as well as ugly) were the "Hollow Stem Goblet" - "as seen on TV "! Now, me, I woulda called that one a "Footed Hollow-Stem Goblet".... Note that beer glass names are hardly universal (I find martini and champagne glasses using the same terminology as above).
Well, looks like the name was BEER KING (circa 1950-1980s), mfg. by Federal Glass. Lotsa Google hits: Was it a CITGO station
I don't know what amazes me more, the amount of information you have, or the ability to find it when needed.
Insomnia helps. This was a tough one, tho' - tried multiple combinations of words (goblet, hollow, footed, base, beer glass, stemmed, etc. - resulting in post #8) but the trick was adding "sham", as in the once classic SHAM PILSNER beer glass. ("Sham" refers to that thick base of solid glass - nothing fake about it ). Finally found that tiny ad on the right - which both referred to them by their official brand name AND that noted they were "sham bottom beer glasses".
I have 6 of the footed "as seen on the TV Fight Show" ones that I picked up in an antique barn a couple of years back. Nice glasses!
Well thanks again for all of the info! Beer King needs to make a comeback! I could see breweries having their logos printed on them. Much nicer for carrying around a taproom than a shaker glass! Cheers!
Well, I'd guess some brewers in the past have used them but (as noted in the other threads about the glass) the United Brewery Workers liked them well enough to make them for their 1954 Detroit Convention: And these folks had "free beer during work" clauses in their contracts, so they knew beer drinking. These turn up on eBay once in awhile, IIRC but given how "forgotten" the BEER KING name is, likely searching for them would be difficult (other than the actual Federal Glass packages).
Wow, that's cool. My dad was a Black Label Drinker, though that was after Heileman took the brand over. In the seventies he was all about Rheingold Chug-a-mugs.
