Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Today is my 9th anniversary of joining the site. Have worked my way up to being #1 site contributor and #4 on the reviewers list. Became a Site Editor/Moderator only since January this year. Having fun with it. Usual new beer hauls this weekend, and stopped by River's Edge this afternoon for some prowler fills.

    Beer:

Still have quite a few left from @Coronaeus from the BIF. Another box will be on Thursday. This was a very nice Gose. Fantastic fluffy head retention/thick foamy lacing. Flavors of big tart/tangy lemon, lime, citrus peel/rind, peach, pear, melon, apricot, red/green apple, white grape/wine, coriander, sea salt, hay, straw, and grass; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bread dough malts; light peppercorn, lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Similar/muted aromas. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness; citrus peel/rind bitterness; and coriander spiciness on the finish. Medium-plus carbonation, light-medium body, and fairly crisp finishing. Creamy/grainy wheat, some lactic acid, citrus rinds, sticky spice, and light salinity in the mouthfeel. Moderate increasing tart/bitter/spicy dryness; slight lingering rind/spice astringency, but not overwhelming. Very smooth, pretty refreshing, not overly lactic, 4.3%. Very well balanced vibrant Japanese citrus, Lacto complexity, spice, salt, and pale/wheat malt backbone against acidity. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp dryness. Very well made and enjoyable, just wish it lacked the citrus astringency. 3.86

Been listening to this band pretty much all weekend. Racked up 130 plays on last.fm

I think this will be the last of my new brews today. Had another good local brew from Land Grant, their First Call Bourbon Coffee Stout made with barrel aged coffee beans from Stauf's Coffee Roasters: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/37078/414957/?ba=bluejacket74#review

This DIPA is brewed with brux trois yeast, which is known for tropical flavors. I think the most popular application is probably Aloha Sculpin.

It pours hazy orange with white lacing. The nose is pineapple. tangerine, and dry yeast. The taste is orange, tangerine, peach, and very subtle crisp bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium and refreshing.

Overall, I had a small sample of this when it was a day old and got some hop burn. 2 weeks in the can have helped it. It's bright and fruity. 4.25+

Excellent IPA. Great fluffy head retention/spotty soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big tangerine, orange juice, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, mango, melon, blueberry, gooseberry, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, woody, floral, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body, and fairly crisp finishing. Balanced creamy/bready/grainy malts and sticky/resinous/rindy hops in the mouthfeel. Moderate increasing resin dryness, light lingering hop astringency through the glass, but not overwhelming. Minimal warming 7%. Citra, Simcoe, and Grungiest hops. Super dank, vibrant, earthy, and fairly juicy hop complexity; with a nice wheat/oat/malt backbone. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp resin dryness. 3.95

August Schell retired their pilsner and replaced in their lineup with this beer, which I finally found on the shelf of my local store.

    Schell's Keller Pils
    IBU: 39
    ABV: 5.5%

(NB: If anyone intends to post a review of this beer on this site, pay attention! There was a one-of Schell's Keller Pils brewed (as part of a sample box, IIRC) in 2016. So, there are 2 listings, one for 2016 and the second for 2019.)

Slightly hazy golden yellow with gobs of rising bubbles. About the right amount of haze for a kellerbier (this isn't a haze-bro style, after all). 1 inch of white head from an "ordinary" pour into a pilsner glass. Leaves thick rings of lacing as the head recedes, and heavy lacing on the opposite side of the glass as you drink.

Crisp aroma of mild citrus, bread, floral, perhaps lemon.

Initial feel starts with a good carbonation bite; solid body for the style.

Taste is the bready malts but transitions quickly to a dominant hop citrus taste, again with the floral / lemon taste. (By "dominant" I mean over the malt flavors. This is not anywhere close to being an IPL. The citrus flavor is mild compared with IPA-styles). Mild hop bitterness begins in the middle and carries through into the finish and lingers in the aftertaste. Finish is dry and crisp. The flavor profile favors the hops over the malts resulting in a more Americanized than German presentation. A good tasting, refreshing beer nonetheless.

My new beer is A friend with Wheat by Mikkeller and Horus. Definitely excited about this collaboration. Poured from fridge temp from a can. Pours a nice dark brown with very little head. The nose is really interesting. Lots of nuts, wheat, slight toffee, cherries, wood, and a touch of smoke. Taste is very nice. Much more caramel, and a good amount of nuts, chocolate, and a tree sap/citrus peel bitterness. The aftertaste is really bitter. It actually gives a slightly bad aftertaste (to me). Mouthfeel is medium bodied, and the alcohol (13.7%) is not detectable. Danger zone! Overall, this is an interesting beer. Cheers all.

Deth's Tar, a Russian Imperial Stout aged for seven months in Heaven Hill and Old Forester Bourbon barrels by American brewery Revolution Brewing (11.4% ABV).

Pours a pitch black coloration with a small, creamy/foamy head. Smells of roasted, caramel malt, dark chocolate and dark fruit, with a good, if slightly sharp, bourbon presence and hints of vanilla, coffee and oak.

Taste is dominated by slightly roasted, caramel malt, chocolate and dark fruits: raisin, fig, plum, as well as lighter notes of coffee, vanilla, bourbon and an earthy oak presence, with just a hint of herbal hops and licorice as well. Finishes bittersweet, with a light/medium bitterness and some roasted malt and dark fruits lingering in the aftertaste, as well as a slightly boozy bourbon note. Full, thick mouthfeel with a rich body and low carbonation.

An Imperial Stout that's rather heavy on the caramel malts and sweet, dark fruits, but still manages to pull off a good balance with some roasted and rich, dark, bitter chocolate notes, coffee and licorice, as well as a good, although slightly boozy, bourbon presence. Perhaps just a tad too sweet and boozy for my personal taste, but still a terrific beer with a decent complexity and good balance of flavors . Plus, I just love the label design.

Hello, NBS patriots. I have a couple of of beers tonight, both from our NBS friend @beerloserLI and NBS BIF Nein. He also provided tonight’s glassware, a style of vessel I love, so he has the beer nerd exacta going on all day long and twice on Sunday.

First up, an IPA that another NBS friend @zid also reviewed today, and a beer which caught me by surprise.

This has all the requisite boxes checked for an IPA that sits somewhere around the NE-style IPA, with the cloudy appearance, the sledgehammer citrus aromas (mango, pineapple, grapefruit), and the mouthfeel that's just a smidge watery. Seen it, drank it a bunch the last couple of years.

Where this beer veers in a direction that is decidedly NOT in the NE-style IPA is on the taste, which has the aforementioned mango, pineapple, and grapefruit flavors, but adds in the utterly delicious and unexpected sweetness from what I perceive as caramalt. Wow, did I NOT see that coming (in my best Chandler Bing voice). What a wonderful surprise, and a delight to drink.

Excellent witbier, not sure what makes it "winter". Fantastic fluffy head retention/foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big lemon, lime, orange peel, peach, pear, melon, red apple, coriander, cardamom, peppercorn, clove, and light banana/bubblegum yeast; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit malts; herbal, floral, grassy hops and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate peppery yeast spiciness; herbal, floral, grassy bitterness; and slight wheat tang/tartness on the finish. Medium-high carbonation, medium body, and fairly crisp finishing. Very creamy/bready/grainy wheat, some sticky hops/spice in the mouthfeel. Moderate increasing bitter/spicy/carbonated dryness, no astringency. Very flavorful/refreshing, 5%. Perfectly balanced Belgian wit yeast and spice complexity; with a good sized pale/wheat malt backbone for the ABV. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp dryness. Spot on classic tasting stuff, loved it. 4.03

Not brand new to me because I have had a couple of cans since it was released a few weeks ago, but the hop was new to me and I've really enjoyed it.
It's got a softly fruity/floral nose that reminds me of guava and pineapple and cara cara oranges. Complimented by a lightly sharper taste where the more tart aspects of pineapple and grapefruit peel dominate. I get a nice earthy and herbal background as well that helps this hop prove itself a useful stand alone.
Mouthfeel on this one is, like most in this series, in an awkward space between apa/classic wcipa and the modern juicy/ne ipas. It is the one area I really think these guys could make some improvements, but not being a brewer I hold my tongue since I don't have any useful suggestions.
This one is high on my list of favorites from their 10 or 12 long series of single hopped ales, mostly for introducing me to a hop that I was totally unaware of and that I will certainly be looking for on labels in the future.

Good evening from the ever-soggy secret compound. Another gloomy weekend that wasn't horrible, just enough to be a little uncomfortable, not good enough to really get into anything much outside.

So Cinco De Mayo sounds like it has become something in the US that was not the original intent. But it does make me think of how important heritage is and passing things down to the next generation. I seriously regret not learning Portuguese from my immigrant great grandmother and my grandparents. My mother never learned Portuguese. It was insisted that English be spoken in the house. By observation, that was pretty common in first and second generation Portuguese. So as a kid, it had no meaning and no importance. I discovered much of my "ethnicity" and culture through music, playing in a Portuguese concert band for almost 45 years. I am glad to have had that opportunity, but it is another dying tradition that I might not get to pass on to the grandson. Music I can do, but recreating the cultural basis for it, not so much.

But I digress...show me the glass...what's in the glass...

This is a departure for me...a 6% NEIPA from Vitamin Sea Brewing called 5 Deadly Venoms. A play on the five deadly Venoms of Scorpion, Toad, Centipede, Snake and Gecko recharacterized as Cascade, Citra, Amarillo, El Dorado, and Simcoe hops.

Well, let me see. It is cloudy, but not what I would call murky. Kinda looks like pineapple juice. It is citrus forward with orange first, but then tropical notes of guava and mango. Fruity sweet smell.

To me, this opens with a surprising level of citrus rind or citrus oil flavor that gives a bitter impression. Then the flavors sort out into orange, mango, guava with an overall feeling of softness. There is a nice overall effervescence without being highly carbonated. It is a bright, fruit forward beer that is quite tasty.

This style is one where I have only had one or two representatives. And I am a bit lukewarm on them, but I am diggin' the overall flavor and the odd impression of the citrus bitters followed by the fruit flavors. Kind of a reverse effect. I will need to think about the score a bit, but I'm feeling in the neighborhood of 4.0-ish at the moment.
