However you spend Memorial Day is up to you. As for me, I raise a glass in honor of my grandfather, father, and brother; all vets who were either stricken or affected by war.

My grandfather's medals from World War I:





We never met, as he went missing in 1934 at the age of 44. He was wounded twice and received a metal plate in his head 100 years ago, married my grandmother, had 2 kids, and left home when my dad was ten. My Dad received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star as a paratrooper in WWII and passed away in 1988 at the age of 64. My older brother, Jim, served on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk off the coast of Vietnam where he came in contact with Agent Orange, contracted cancer in his cheek years later, and succumbed after a fifteen year fight in 2008 at the age of 57.

At 66, I've outlived them all and I don't know why...

 

So if someone said to you, “Fuck off!”
Today you’d say, “Thanks, I planned on it!”

I’m grilling out today too, and it’s much nicer today than yesterday.

We lost my Uncle Danny a few years ago, he was badly wounded on Iwo Jima. His first trip outside of Trenton NJ, to Hawaii for training and then over the side of the boat onto Iwo. He was wounded by a mortar round. I can’t imagine the horror, imaging telling America today you had 25,000 killed and wounded in 30 days of fighting, the carnage unbelievable when you figure most of the 20,000 or so defenders were also killed.

Currently though...

A-Crop Blacklight imperial stout with vanilla...

Better than the coconut variant; actually a decent "vanilla stout" - has enough drying char to keep the sweetness from getting sloppy... Choco-char and ash following a wet chocolate and vanilla start... Zaftig's bourbon barrel wee heavy was transcendent, so I gave a couple of these Blacklight stouts a try - this one was good...

Wasn’t planning on starting this early, but 300 plus pounds of black mulch later and water just ain’t cutting it. Delicious.
