I have traded a few times with another member. He has many trades under his belt and is 100% positive. Recently, we had a confirmed trade through the trade tool. Neither of us shipped yet. A mod read through the thread and agreed that it seemed like I was ghosted.

I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt to this member. Having his company name and phone number from prior trades), I called in hopes of getting some sort of news (like he is very ill or his house burned down....or some other reason that would explain this away.) After all, some things in life are more important than beer trading. Turns out he has recently left the company.

Does this warrant a bad trader thread? I am wondering what the purpose(s) of the bad trader threads are? is it to alert the community that this trader has gone rogue? is it to resolve a squabble? all of the above?

I could be wrong but if a trade is agreed to in conversation to the point of a trade being accepted through both partys....then the bad trader thread is for that since someone is not fulfilling their end of a trade. You could post this in the bad trader thread just like this with no names just yet and see how the community feels

In some ways, all of the above. It spares another BA from having to go through the same situation with this individual.

I’ve also seen it make the person miraculously reappear and make things right. If someone accepted a trade in the system, and have since gone ghost, they deserve to be named for all of the above.

For clarification, did you ship out your beer? Or was no beer shipped and lost?

You agreed to trade, when was this? Did you agree when to ship?

I feel this definitely deserves bad trader status especially because the trade was accepted by both parties and one party has gone dark.

So many questions. You agreed to a trade and used the system, but neither of you shipped yet.

What’s the time frame here? I don’t get the agreement and then an open ended, unspecified ship date by either of you.

Did you not discuss when either of you would ship?

Also, you called his company? Did you try calling/texting him first?

All that said, if a trade is agreed upon through the system and one person disappears, that person’s profile should be made known to others in the community.

Some will say, no beer moved/lost, no foul. And of course, hopefully this person is okay, but if you agree to a trade, you should follow through. Even if that means it takes longer than originally agreed upon due to unforeseen circumstances. In that case, that should be communicated and okayed by the other party.

I'm confused why you didn't ship either if it was an agreed upon trade with someone with a good reputation. I likely would have after it was a set deal in the system. It sounds like you already had the address if it was a repeat trade.

Don't get me wrong, it's for the best that you didn't if he didn't either... but I don't know if I'd say it was bad trader thread if you never shipped either while having the address.

I think that's what the op is contemplating, do I actually make a post for bad trader. It's seems he was more worried about the trader ghosting him and maybe something else had gone wrong( guy doesn't work at his job, that could've been it). But in the mean time letting people be aware of this does help future traders or maybe current ones.

I didnt want to get too detailed in this thread since I just wanted to get a feel for whether I should start a bad trader thread. I wasn't listing out all the details. I will wait another day or 2 bc I am still just stunned that this person disappeared.

PS We were supposed to ship on a specified date (he actually mixed it up the week before, but we got it squared up and ready). On the day we were supposed to ship, I pinged him to confirm and received no reply. I tried calling and texting him on his last known phone number (no response). I brought a mod in to take a look (a second look) and he confirmed that it seems like i was ghosted.

It sounds like you have made a good faith effort to hold up your end of the deal and your trading partner has gone silent. Regrettably, unanticipated and unintended abrupt life changes do happen (job loss, divorce and financially difficulty are frequent travel companions) but none of us should shove our problems off on others.

Bad Trader is a bad rap but is a risk we take when we offer to trade with others then pull out of the deal without the curiosity of an explanation.

So how long has it been since you've heard from them? Sounds like more than a week?

I have several regular trade partners. Some of these relationships go back years. Met a few IP at various beer related things too after some trades. I'd even venture to call a few of them friends. If it were me, and it was one of my regular trade partners that all of the sudden stopped communicating in any format, started making simple mistakes on our trades, suddenly left their job, etc. Quite frankly I'd be worried about them. Hopefully your trade partner is okay. It's been rare, but we have seen some cases (I believe 2 in my trading career here) where the BA in question had life altering complications come up. I hope that's not the case here, and everything works out for both of you. I always appreciate seeing a BA use restraint before putting someone on blast.

That said, if it's a case of job transitioning, a simple, "Hey dude, lost my job. Things are rough right now. Can't be spending $ on beer and shipping right now. Can you cut me some slack for a bit?" doesn't feel to hard to send.

And since I can't edit here... Has this BA read your recent messages on here? Do they have other open trades right now? Would be pretty simple for a mod to see of they are communicating with others or have ghosted everyone.

Unfortunately, this is no longer a feature as of like a week ago. No longer can see “last read” on conversations.

I would suspect Mods can still check this, but no more for user to user.

Don't want to get us off track here, but dislike! Was this posted somewhere and I
just missed it? Curious as to the rationale here.

The mod said that he hasn't been on since Aug 24 if I remember correctly? So last seen would also include that he has not read his messages either. But that feature is gone anyway. That was the last time we talked.

I had a similar issue, but through FB. Repeat trader, I was trading monkish cans for 450 North. We waited a few weeks since it was hot. Once I was ready, he stopped responding. Really weird.

I didn't really lose anything, except the fact the IPA's weren't fresh to trade anymore. I'd prefer a quick reply for some sort of explanation. Maybe he miscalculated and traded my beers away, not great but mistakes happen. I'd tend to believe him. Life goes on obladi oblada.

I respectfully disagree on this one. RL problems are significantly more important than silly beer trading. Definitely the trader should respond with something. But if he responded down the road and said something like a divorce or tragic loss of life in the family - I would not hold any resentment or animosity. (nor want him tagged as a BAD TRADER) But that's me.
