Good afternoon folks. Thanks to @cjgiant for kicking (:stuck_out_tongue:) things off. Unfortunately, I'm not much of an American football fan. The NHL (go Flames!) and NBA (go Raptors!) are my main NA sports, and the Bundesliga is my football league (Go SC Freiburg!). However, I do like beer. My new one for today is a big one. Number Crunch from Bottle Logic. A bourbon barrel-aged stout finished with a variety of cocao nibs and vanilla. This is a 2019 bottle poured from fridge temp. Pours a thick creamy black with quickly escaping brown head. The nose is pretty insane. I immediately get some huge fudge and milk chocolate notes. Vanilla, bourbon, toffee, molasses, raspberry, and maybe a touch of walnuts. The taste is pretty intense. Lots of lactose on the back end, but some bitter chocolate and fudge up front. The bourbon comes in really nicely on the aftertaste. This is a huge beer - no doubt about it. The dark fruit (raspberry, blackberry) also lingers after the swallow. This really isn't too sweet, but a lot of the flavors are definitely based on very sweet things. It's nicely balanced. Mouthfeel is crazy - super viscous and creamy. Overall, this is a slam dunk for Bottle Logic. I will definitely seek out more of this. Cheers all.

Kalamazoo Stout is the beer that deigned to stand in for Young's Oatmeal Stout. It has been a favorite for years and hits all of my dark beer triggers. I love it, but it's not my first love.

Thanks for getting us started @cjgiant. I don't really like or follow football (don't judge me, I like other sports).
    Anyways....
I have a new Trillium today. I know they went through some flack earlier this year and honestly, I haven't followed the aftermath to the end, but this thing kind of fell in my lap. AND ITS AMAZING.
Lets start with the can art. I could watch those YouTube videos for an hour of trucks and campers getting smashed under low bridges. Look at this thing!

Poured from a 16oz can dated 8/28/19 to a Nonic. Fridge temp, but it was a long session.
Great multi-sized bubble head but it doesn't last over a super opaque, muddy orange body.
Aroma is pineapple, mango, apricot , very odorous.
Taste is very fruity, an apricot Popsicle basically.
This thing is thick and creamy. Mouthfeel pretty much follows the appearance.
    I really enjoyed this thing.

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the weekend once again. Thanks to @cjgiant for today's introduction. I ended up sleeping all day after staying out all night last night. I went over to a college friend's house who lives in Shelby Twp, I had not seen him in 9-10 years prior. I got a tour of his new and pretty bare looking house. Brought some beer over, had a good chat about our engineering jobs lol. There are a few others we know in the area, so we are going to try and get everyone to hang out soon. My beer cellar is getting low recently, I got some new friends that have been helping me drink stuff now. Not a whole lot of new stuff to review, but I will be getting a big Tavour box in a couple weeks.

    Beer:

Ascension Hard Light. Fantastic NEIPA. Opaquely hazy green color, lasting rocky head retention/foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of huge mandarin orange juice, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, gooseberry, white grape/wine, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate wheat, cracker, biscuit dough, light toasted malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; very creamy/bready/grainy malts, some sticky hops, and light resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering bitter dryness; no cloying/astringent. Very smooth/soft, minimal warming 7.5%. Fantastic Vic Secret, Cascade, Citra, Amarillo, and Nelson profile. Extremely juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hops; with a nice sized wheat/oat/malt backbone. Mild residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. Impressive style example as expected. 4.2

Bright, golden yellow body; dense and sculpted white head. The aroma was primarily a light caramel malt sweetness; bare trace of citrus; floral, and pine notes. The taste followed along with a semi-sweet caramel malt thing; some hop bitterness. Medium-heavy body; sticky sweetness; cross between moderately sweet and semi-dry on the palate.

The date on the bottle looked like 011519, so fairly old for an IPA at the time of my review. I give the beer the benefit of a doubt with the taste and aroma based on the date of bottling, but both did seem dated and faded. Not bad, but deserves to be experienced at a fresher state for a fair shake.
    --------
Yep, an older IPA that tastes and smells more malty than hoppy. It is almost nine months old, so my impressions don't surprise me. Perhaps I'll come across a fresher version in the future and re-review as necessary.

    2018.
    750 ml. bottle.
Moderate pour yields a one inch white head over a light amber body with some lacing. Nose of cracker, citrus, and very slight vanilla. Taste mirrors nose with the vanilla coming forward nicely reducing the tartness factor somewhat. Very interestingly unique beer right here. There is a definite orange creamsicle flavor on the finish which doesn't suck. Nice feel and overall, I would love to have this again, but the price is borderline outrageous. Cheers!!

Thanks to @cjgiant for another great start to NBS. While not the rabid NFL fan that I was in my youth, I did enjoy kicking back and watching the Titans defy all expectations and crush the Browns today. Anyway, onto a great beer:

Vermilion Barleywine, Perennial Artisan Ales, St. Louis, MO
    [IMG]

In full disclosure, British Barleywine is one of my favorite styles. This one was bottled on 9/11/2017, so it had some age on it.
Look: a somewhat hazy copper-brown color with a medium sized tan head. The foam settled slowly and left some nice tracks on the glass.
Aroma: brighter than expected with caramel, raisins, figs, and dark bread.
Taste: all of the above flavors were there with a richness and depth. Not overly sweet due to an assertive floral and earthy bitterness from the hops. Not as pronounced as in an American Barleywine, but enough to match the malt. The yeast seemed to lend more floral notes as well.
Feel: big as expected, but not cloying. Light carbonation appropriate for the style.
Overall: a delicious British Barleywine. It's bright flavors, bitterness, and ABV lean toward American BW, but this is outstanding. Highly recommended!

    Greetings, fellow NBSers,

Drizzly weather in eastern Washington. During the week it was approaching 90°, but fall seemed to kick in on Friday.

I had to skip NBS last week on account of a 4-alarm hangover. Last Saturday included a long overdue visit to Mountain Lakes, a nanobrewery location in eastern downtown Spokane. From there I met a friend at Community Pint for a few, then proceeded to Riverfront Park for Pig Out In The Park, an annual food truck & live music festival, where more beers were consumed, along with a steak Donerkebab and some vegetable samosas.

This week I mostly stayed home, especially yesterday, as I watched my Eagles messily beat a D2 team and my Dawgs come up short in a bizarre game that was delayed for 3 hours because of an intense thunderstorm and didn't end until nearly 1:30 this a.m.

Today I'm properly reviewing for the first time a hazy IPA from local stalwart Iron Goat. I've had it before on tap but this time I took home a tallboy to do a review:

A very citrusy and juicy hazy IPA. More dry and bitter than a lot of hazies, and very tasty.

Might be back with another before too long.

Unless it’s Rover Truck, the opportunity to purchase TG stouts in bottles or cans (Rover Truck) is severely limited (as in “only on release day and prepare to open your wallet). Those are some rare ducks you’re hunting, my friend.

    Howdy all!
I'm just back from a little tour in the brisk, cloudy weather and am ready for a beer while prepping dinner. I went back on forth on what to have tonight but I finally settled on cracking this saison I picked up in New Hampshire a few weeks back. This was brewed at the most low tech, rustic brewery I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. The brewer built a little brewing barn out behind his house between horses, a chicken coop and the forest. Everything is brewed with wood on a redneck-engineered maple boiler, some of his horses are still used to work the woods, he doesn't use pumps, chills naturally, etc. He also has reprinted historical brewing books that he has for sale and was, generally speaking, quite the character.
    Here it is:
The beers I tried were not life changing but were definitely intersting and--as far as I know--tasted (save for sourness) quite a bit like what I understand historic beers to have tasted like for all the good and bad that that brings to mind. I figured that with all that in mind a saison would be a good bet so here we are.
It pours crystal clear and ruddy copper with a nice two fingers of beige head. Easily rouseable, good retention, swoopy lacing.
The aroma is hay, lemon zest, woodsy hops/malt, sweetgrass burning miles away. The flavor is similar but different too with some caramelization flavors, red fruit, more light smoke and an earthy bitter finish.
It is very nice actually. Better than I was expecting but different in a way I wasn't (if that makes any sense). It manages to be very dry but the kettle caramelization (or the malt, I'm assuming the origin) gives it a nice supple body , the smokiness is very faint and not obtrusive but is definitely there. If I were to describe the whole thing I'd say it is a popsicle stick that was "red flavored" that got dropped on the ground next to a campfire ring. I liked this one a lot. It reminded me of a bière de garde in some ways but drier. The ruddy-ness of it was nice to offset the ever-so-slight ashy smoke hint that his beers seem to have.
Since I got a new phone this week and am still screwing with the camera here's a second pour shot as well as a mural I came across today during my tour.

    Santé!

The glass I picked up at the brewery a few years ago when I drove cross-country visiting a lot of great breweries. I really have not used it much, in fact I only used it for the La Cumbre beers I came back with, but recently I realized that life is short, so what the hey! Cheers!

Hello, NBS friends. I would personally like to thank @cjgiant for reminding me that I’m a long-time Vikings fan (I’m assuming “since 1971 when I was 8” qualified as “long-time), and that I’ve endured .....

    - 3 Super Bowl losses that were varying degrees of blowouts (I wasn’t a fan in 1970 for Super Bowl IV).

    - Drew Pearson’s egregious assault of Nate Wright before he caught the “Hail Mary” pass from Roger Staubach in the 1975 playoffs.

    - Les Steckel (don’t ask) which begat .....

    - Bud Grant retiring. Twice.

    - The Party Boat and Mike Tice (don’t ask, part deux).

But most significantly, I (and all Vikes fans) endured the ending of the 1998 and 2009 seasons. Both years, the Vikings were the best team in the NFL (don’t argue with me, I’m a trained professional), especially in 1998.

Both years, the Vikings reached the NFC Championship Game.

Both years, the Vikes had the game won.

Both years, the Vikes lost in a most painful fashion, the kind of painful that stays with you ..... forever, or certainly as long as you’re a fan.

But I keep coming back, as I did today to watch the Vikes play really well in a win over Atlanta. That’s the life of a fan (at least it is for this fan). On to tonight’s first beer. I picked this up last week whilst visiting Mom in Ohio.

The pour yields a nearly crystal clear straw colored beer with a conspicuously foamy white head. Gorgeous beer. The nose captures what I’m assuming are fruity hop aromas from New Zealand hops, which are welcome, but the grassy/grainy/bready aromas I associate with a lager aren’t present.

They’re not present on the taste, either, but the tropical hop flavors certainly are, especially lemongrass, and the mouthfeel is on point. This is a crusher of a lager that is more in the IPL category, IMHO. Really nice lawnmower beer.

Extremely juicy, vibrant, and lightly dank/earthy hops; with a perfectly balanced wheat/oat/malt backbone. Light residual sweetness with lingering dryness. Did not prefer much over the base beer, but it is definitely way softer/silky fresh; I usually age the base beer for a couple months to get the same effect. 4.38
