I got this e-mail as well. But after going through something like this last Winter (Still have two 12-oz. cans of Deth's Tar in the fridge.), checking the forecast... No, sorry. It is way too cold and snowy for me to forage out of the abode tonight. :disappointed I would have opted for the $60 offer.
    • Are you potentially suggesting a less-than-journalistic rating of a certain brewery's brews due to something occurring behind-the-scenes amidst the brewery and the journalist? Asking for a friend.:smirk:

Cool man thanks! My hope is that the beer release at 4 will take away some of the crowds from the brew pub

Anyone getting a crowler of left over Deep Woods variants to make beer can turkey this Thanksgiving? Could be a fun social media stunt if any Rev folks monitoring the site wanted to grill out....

The event with Jim (brewmaster) and Marty (barrelmaster) was great, again. In addition to VSOJ, Blackberry Finn & 2016 Uncalled Four, there were some nuggets I found interesting:

-Marty was very thankful for the support for Straight Jacket...as he said, "Nobody is making this much barleywine." Wracked my brain and I can't think of a brewery that makes this much.

-Every year, they expect this series to get better, as they have more & more different beers to blend. For example, this year's Deth's Tar is a blend of beers aged for 1, 2, 3 and 4 years. I certainly noticed the difference, as this year's kinda blew me away.

-Deep Woods is as much about mathematics as it is about judging flavors. They keep extensive information on the makeup of the base beers (especially regarding sweetness and dryness) based on the ingredients. Same for the barrels. They don't taste a beer and decide it should go in a particular barrel...they look at the data from how they brewed it & immediately put it into a barrel they think will be complimentary. It sounds like there's a lot of spreadsheet **** going on.

-Marty claims Deeth's Tar and Death's Tar are both correct. He uses the Deeth pronunciation, but Josh Deth himself uses Death.

-I didn't realize how big this company had become, relative to other Chicago breweries...how much they brew of the Deep Woods stuff is driven by the sales department's projections, and they can't package small batch stuff because just turning on the packaging line turns it into a financial loss.

-Speaking of the small batch stuff...while the entire packaged Deep Woods series is all flash pasteurized, the keg only stuff is NOT. They keep that stuff "close to the vest"...kegged, kept cool and mostly kept in-house, except for a few accounts that are vetted to make sure they understand Revolution's expectations for the kegs. Marty was also adamant that kegs are absolutely the best vessel for keeping beer.

-Uncalled Four was the spiritual forefather for the Deep Woods series...but I can't remember why, as things got a bit foggy for me near the end.

    Sorry for the novel.

TL;DR: fun, informative event that you should go to next year.

Great recap. Thanks for sharing your notes.
So we are to refer to him as Mr. Death?

Agreed, I really enjoyed the evening! I appreciate Jim, Marty, and the rest of the staff on hand taking the time outside of regular business hours to put on an event like that.

Super jealous and now I really wish I could have made the event- Uncalled Four is one of my favorite of the old Deep Woods beers and I really hope it/a variation comes back some day
