Back as promised with a BIF "mystery beer." I'm not entirely certain @SammyJaxxxx meant this to be a mystery beer, but it was the only can (out of three incredible boxes!) that was wrapped like this, hiding its label. In fact, out of the first two boxes, it was the only can wrapped at all (box three contained all cans, all in bubble wrap).

So I will be reviewing this blind, rating to style only as well as I can guess that style.

Clearly a stout/porter, although the head is modest and short lived, and the top of the body more of a cola color. 3.25

Almost a restrained RIS on the nose, with vanilla, cola, coconut, prune, marshmallow, and brown sugar. It's cold, so I expect the sharpness may fade as the beer warms. I'm not picking up any barrel, and nothing about it smells big, so perhaps a more modest entry from the stout family: robust porter, oatmeal stout, cream stout. More sweet as the beer slowly warms from fridge temp; I'm starting to think maple syrup, perhaps. 3.75

Definitely a sweet stout on the palate. Maple seems very likely; perhaps cacao as an additive, as well, as there's a kiss of chocolate that comes along on the back third. Vanilla, marshmallow, and coconut are still in play, as well. There's definitely some cola, prune, espresso, nuts, and molasses from the malt base; not enough outright coffee flavor to suggest it as an additive. Very tasty. 4.00

Relatively thin; I'm thinking lower ABV, 6.5-7.5% perhaps. There is some back-end heat, however, suggesting that perhaps this reaches sub-10% imperial territory. 3.5

OK, I'm thinking a lower ABV imperial stout (8-10%) brewed with maple, and perhaps other additives as well. Very tasty brew. Reveal to follow.

Rustic Leaf Black Lotus. Awesome Black IPA. Lasting rocky head retention/thick soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big lemon, orange, peach, pear, melon, apricot, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, dill, coriander, cilantro, peppercorn, pine hops; with moderate chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark bread/crust malts; with herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery, roast, charred bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body; balanced creamy/bready/grainy malts, sticky/resinous/rindy hops, and light chalky roast in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing bitter dryness; no acrid/astringent flavors. Very smooth, not aggressive, minimal warming 7%. Awesome Sorachi Ace profile. Very vibrant and fairly juicy/dank/earthy hops; with a great balanced roasted malt backbone. Mild residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. The hop profile is unique as expected, but works really well here! 4.13

Hello, NBS friends. I have a couple of beers tonight from NBS BIF #10 courtesy of @larryi86, and the glassware is courtesy of him as well. What a magnificent beer nerd he is - the glass is on the smaller side, so I find myself drinking the beer a bit slower, which increases my appreciation for the beer as it warms.

The beers (and glassware) are also my first from Wilmington Brew Works, which is something else the NBS BIF’s offer - access to excellent beers that would normally be unattainable. What a wonderful beer nerd world we live in.

Have I mentioned how much I love BIF’s?

Very hazy straw color with a white head, this NEAPA tosses off bright citrus and earthy, almost oniony (how’s that word work for you) aromas thanks to the Citra and Simcoe hop bill. This is in my APA sweet spot before the first sip.

That sip features flavors that follow the aforementioned aromas, with juicy oranges and grapefruit from the Citra and that ubiquitous Simcoe hop flavor that I really enjoy, but what really stands out with this beer is the mouthfeel, which is as crisp as a freshly minted C-Note. Outstanding.

What a pleasure this flavorful NEAPA is to drink.

    Well, well, well!

Interboro Spirits and Ales Double Fluffed imperial stout (with coconut and marshmallow) - 11.5%

I was certainly off on the maple; I think the sweetness of the marshmallow and the woodiness of the (presumably toasted) coconut misled my palate. I did figure on those two additives, though, which is particularly amusing to me in terms of marshmallow.

I'm shocked at the high ABV; I whiffed big time on that one. Really, the presentation is much thinner than I prefer for such a high ABV stout (although it's thickening up, not to mention becoming stickier, as it warms; it's still colder than ideal).

Really a nice beer overall, as my blind ratings reflect. Final review has been modified somewhat to reflect the style, intent, and ABV, as well as to take into account the presentation at warmer temperatures.

Okay @zid, I haven't read your previous posts, but you almost sideswiped me with that second one when I wasn't expecting it.

I picked up the new Guinness Stock Ale earlier in the week mostly because the beer guy where I was shopping nudged me in that direction. Actually, all he really had to do was to explain about the blend of a barleywine with a stout, which sure sounds like a concept that would appeal to me. The part about the bourbon barrels I was sort of agnostic on, but what the hell...tis the season and all that :sunglasses:. Plus, I'm actually counting on Guinness not to be too heavy handed with any of these elements.

Fwiw, I'm enjoying this at genuine "cellar temperature", or just slightly chilled. My closets in the basement get nicely cool this time of year, so I don't even have to put certain beers in the fridge.

Halfway through the first bottle and it's rather growing on me. The first sip had a sort of harsh abrasiveness to it (maybe from the stout?), but that smoothed out quickly enough. The bourbon aspect also seems to be on the verge of overwhelming the beer at first, but that also resolves itself with another sip or two.

The character of the base beer is mostly from the barleywine, as it should be, imo. Deep malty toffee, dried figs, some almond paste are the main platform here. But I'm also getting a nice accent of cocoa powder on the finish; while the barrel contributes tons of vanillins, toasty oak, and some decent tannic structure. Omnipresent over all of this is that quality that screams "bourbon", but as I mentioned, after a few sips it all becomes harmonious.

I'm rather enjoying the 10% level here: residual sugars and any higher alcohols are neatly kept under control; while at the same time there's still a certain feeling of power going on. The feel is sturdy and lean, even kind of nimble. And, aside from whatever contribution comes from the bourbon, there is no real issue with alcohol heat whatsoever.

I'm liking it overall, and even though my preferences would be to tweak the balance somewhat, it's still well enough made that I can enjoy it on its own terms. Solid A- (4.3).

    16 oz. can.
    Canned 10/31/19.
Moderate pour yields a 5/4 inch white head over a murky golden body with sticky lacing. Head dissipates down to a ring and a couple islets in a few minutes, but comes back nicely with a few swirls. Nose of tropical fruit and citrus with a bit of floral/herbal aromas as well. Taste mirrors nose nicely with the tropical fruit and citrus lasting all the way to a gentle bitter finish of slight citrus pith. Nice, semi-soft feel and overall, a solid DIPA from Charlton, MA. Cheers to Rob for the hookup!!

So, yeah, after going back to your posts it would seem that we had a certain amount of overlap in what we were getting but parted ways on what to make of it . I also had a strong feeling that temperature would be a significant contributing factor with a beer like this, so thanks for posting back with a second take. Cheers!

Very hazy, like heavily pulped orange juice, the light tan head head is releasing citrus aroma balloons with impunity - oranges, pineapple, and mango, but there’s a sweetness underneath from the caramalt and lactose.

The reminds so much of Hawaiian Punch - the fruit notes are indeed tropical as the can states, but it’s that caramalt backbone and the lactose addition that add a balanced sweetness you don’t typically find in this style.

This is the very definition of “dangerously drinkable.” Sign me up for anything WBC brews.

An average pour from a 12-oz. can produced a finger of off-white soapy foam with a creamy cap, long retention and blotches of lace. Hazy translucent golden-straw color,

Citrus and piney hops greet the nose, bread dough and cracker in the rear with dank hops.

Neutral on sweetness with moderate bitterness, the citrus is orange, lemon zest and grapefruit. Pale and lightly toasted malts rise along with pine and resin. The finish is fast and clean, semi-dry with above average bitterness. Pine and resin linger for a while.

Medium-light malty rich body with above average carbonation. Some Juice, soft and smooth. Alcohol is cleverly disguised. Straight forward and true to style.

    @Premo88

Beck's released a Beck's Sapphire lager years ago. I doubt that's the best option if trying to highlight this hop (in aroma or flavor), but it's easily the first beer that came to mind:

    Canned 11/08/19.
Moderate pour yields a one inch white head over a cloudy/murky golden body with some lacing. Nose of citrus, slight pine, and slight tropical fruit. As it warms there is a bit of currant on the nose as well. Taste of citrus (orange, grapefruit), slight tropical fruit (mango), and very slight pine resin towards the finish of citrus pith. Nice feel and overall, a fairly complex and solid DIPA and definitely worth the effort.

For New Beer #3, I needed to shift things up on my palate. I also could use a good IPA after today's earlier selections (with the early football games), and what better choice than the legendary Head High IPA from Kane?

    Ooh, a 5 C-hop IPA, apparently.

It certainly shows on the nose, and on the palate; at just about a month old, if this had much more time in the can, the Citra hops might show up with a danker presentation, but this is in my sweet spot.

Really remarkably balanced brew, with old school bitterness and new school creaminess. A showcase of hops, without needing anything crazy - Citra being perhaps the most exotic hop used. I don't quite notice the pils malt, except perhaps for a very light earthy and peppery skunk. There's a similarly restrained kiss of brown sugar from the crystal malt.

This is excellent, really outstanding, for what it is: a modern but respectful single IPA loaded with hop highlights.

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is doing well. I went to my nephews first birthday today and had a great time. Now that I’m home I’m enjoying some Sand City stouts thanks to @beerloserLI.

Since @beerloserLI sent me both the coconut and hazelnut Southdown Stout I had to do a side by side.

    Hazelnut (BA score 4.24)

A- Black with a two finger mocha head 4

S- Hazelnuts, chocolate, some roasted malts, hints of coffee 4.25

T- Roasted malts, hazelnuts, chocolate, coffee, touch of dark fruits 4.25

M- Smooth, medium body, slightly creamy 4.25

O- A really nice stout, hazelnut add a lot of great flavor to this, easy to drink 4.25

    Coconut (BA score 4.19)

A- Black with a three finger dense mocha head 4.25

Both are really good stouts, hazelnut is a touch better.
