    Moss Mill Da Birds Kolsch

Happy Sunday, BAs. I have a lot of new beers to choose from at the moment, but am starting with one I picked up today at the farmers market. Had to support the idea of a craft brewery tabling there.

Da Birds pours clear gold with good effervescence and a fat finger of white head. The head has nice retention and leaves solid rings of lacing.

It has a clean aroma with just a hint of bread and sulfur. The hops are light, first giving a faint impression of tropical fruit and then of hay.

It’s much breadier tasting — somewhat sweet, not unlike corn bread. A light hint of sulfur and this time minty hops show as well.

It’s light to medium bodied, and fairly slick feeling, with lightly zippy carbonation.

Da Birds smells a bit like a pilsner — crisp and only very, very lightly fruity — but the Kolsch taste and feel are right there. This is a refreshing, quality beer.

Hope you all get the day off tomorrow. :beers:

New Field of the Warriors Sunday

As I finished reviewing a beer from @cjgiant, last night, I noticed it was review #999. So today’s new brew is #1,000. And out of those 1,000 beer reviews, there were probably only a handful that not only piqued my interest as much as this one, but delivered on a unique experience. Thanks to @Lingenbrau for a very enjoyable, and appropriately named beer for this NFL Sunday. What can I say. The guy has good tastes.

    Batch 3. Canned 12/12

It is a very dark brown/chestnut color and ever so slightly transparent when held up to the light. It has a moderate tan head that leaves a thin film on top.

I smell a lot of chocolate, a grape jelly like fruit, and some toasted dark bread, like rye or pumpernickel, and a light char that you would get from a porter.

The initial taste has a lager like yeast sweetness. There is a very prominent toasted dark bread crust, some cocoa like chocolate, and dark sweet berries before it rounds out with a little bit of peppery orange flavored citrus, some floral hops, and a lingering burnt coffee grounds. The aftertaste has a solid bitterness and is a bit pithy.

The body is on the lighter side, but it has enough fullness to roll of the tongue with a touch of creaminess. Definitely some oily resin on the finish. The label says it’s an easy-drinking beer. I concur.

I haven’t had many beers made with Kveik, but this one is really good. And unique. It’s hard to find something to compare it to. It really has qualities of a Brown Ale, a Dunkel, an American Porter, and a European Dark Lager. I really like this one and would highly recommend it.

    Good afternoon BA
I loved the original version of this one, but haven’t had the opportunity to try the update...

    The review:
12oz bottle enjoy by 06 May 2020 poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp 7.5% ABV. The beer pours bright light amber with abundant off white head. The head slowly settles to thick cap leaving the glass covered in lacing. The aroma dank and earthy predominantly with notes of citrus and pine underneath. The taste is more of the same with citrus and pine given the heavy hitting Simcoe punch over a pleasant light malt body. Heavily bitter throughout (no surprise). The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, very good, but not in my taste preference. I'm not a big Simcoe fan and it dominates this beer IMO. Still very well made and a nice reminder of this beer blowing my mind years ago.

So sorry to hear about your brother-in-law Lordoftheweins. End of life stuff is just so damn hard. Sounds like he's lucky to have the family around him that he does.

In happier news, it's NBS and I have a new beer to share. I'm not 100% sure what this is because it seems to have undergone a recent name change and is also variously listed as an ESB and an amber ale. The can I have is called Wells Bombardier Glorious English Ale which clocks in at 5.2% ABV (which I later read is the export strength of this beer. Looks like it's 4.3% in England). Best by date 4/20 so I'm guessing this is about 9 months old.

    Look:
pours a light mahogany that lets quite a bit of light through. It has a lucsiously frothy head that lasts and lasts, sticking to your upper lip after each sip. Very attractive beer!

Smell: brown bread, some vaguely Belgian spicy yeast esters, and some coppery, metallic notes. Fairly subdued.

Taste: more brown bread, some molasses, a little earthy hops, and (thankfully) just a hint of that coppery taste I picked up on the nose. A little sweetness in the cheeks after the swallow but otherwise finishes clean and invites another sip. Very mild and balanced.

Feel: crisper than it looks but also kind of full feeling in the mouth. Carbonation is very mild.

Overall: I was a bit scared off by the copper note (which I tend to be sensitive too and don't like) but it turns out I liked this a lot. It's something you could comfortably drink several of, so it definitely hits the English mark on that note. I'd be interested to try this on cask where I imagine it only gets more drinkable. I wish I had another one right now actually.

    ... solid black
...medium light carbonation with an above average body. A slight oily feel
...aroma is roasted malt, black coffee, wood/earthy, peat, what seemed like a little dark fruit
...taste was very similar, mostly roasted malt, coffee, and wood/earthy. And really dry
..overall it was good but incredibly dry. As I said in -what beer are you drinking now- it's Sahara desert dry, drier than my sense of humor. But, still interesting and enjoyable [IMG]

Good Sunday afternoon, New Beer Swiggers and commentators. Thank you for the intro, @lordofthewiens. I hope you enjoyed your birthday yesterday. I'm one of those odd people who has no desire to cruise. About the only trip that intrigues me would be around the Baltic Sea - Helsinki, Talinn, Aland Islands, and maybe St. Petersburg. But I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Yesterday, my wife and I attended the 4th anniversary celebration at Slack Tide Brewing in Clermont (Cape May County), New Jersey. Slack Tide is one of our favorite brewery experiences: it's small, off the beaten path, the owners and patrons are very nice, and the beer uniformly ranges from good to outstanding. Slack Tide is very adept at brewing New England IPAs; the pineapple milkshake I had yesterday was amazing. Once of the brewery's regular offerings is Bell Buoy (all of its beers have nautical-themed names), a Belgian Blonde Ale. While not at the level of the leaders of the style, it's quite good. For its anniversary Slack Tide aged it for 3 months in Pineau des Charentes barrels, to give it cognac and white wine notes. The result is a far more sophisticated, interesting, and flavorful Blonde Ale. Despite the cognac notes it drinks easily at 7.3% While this isn't a style I'd drink regularly, I'm enjoying it. I should have bought a second bottle for the upcoming BIF. They only made 500 bottles; hopefully some will remain next time we're down there in a few weeks. Here's my review:

    4.19/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

A special release to commemorate Slack Tide's 4th anniversary. Poured from 22 oz., wax-sealed bottle into a tulip glass. It pours a hazy, orange-amber color with an enormous, fluffy, milk-white head that resembles gelato, and thick, soapy lacing. The smell features banana, lemon, apple, plum, clove, and Belgian yeast. There is only a faint smell of white wine. As it warms there is also tobacco smoke. The taste opens like the base Blonde Ale with banana, clove, apple, darker fruit, and the distinct funky yeast taste. But behind it, and becoming more apparent with each sip, is cognac. The distinct cognac taste seems to cover the white wine grape and it takes some time to discern it - but it's definitely there. The barrel notes completely change the base beer and make it much more complex and interesting. The mouth feel is luxurious and creamy with less carbonation than I expected - and at 7.3% ABV it's not heavy. Overall, while I'm honestly not fond of cognac, the barrel-aging takes this Belgian Blond Ale to another level. It's a novelty but a most enjoyable one.

I hope you're all enjoying your new beer(s) today. Cheers, NBS!

Más Agave, a Gose brewed with lime, agave and salt and aged in Tequila barrels by American brewer Founders (10% ABV).

Pours a cloudy, deep, dark golden amber coloration with a medium, fluffy, stable head and lots of floaters. Smells quite intoxicating of sweet, slightly caramelly malt, agave syrup and vibrant lime zest, with a certain, oaky tequila note also being quite evident.

Taste is an excellent balance of sweeter caramel malt, agave syrup and brown sugar notes, balanced out by quite a strong, zesty lime note, mild tartness and grounded by an earthy, peppery oak presence and a distinct tequila character, as well as just a hint of sea salt. Finishes with a light sweetness and tartness, as well as a mild, warming boozy presence and some lime and agave syrup lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and medium carbonation.

This is quite an interesting, unique interpretation of a Gose that really impresses with a rich, complex and quite well balanced flavor profile of sweet, zesty, woody and mildly tart and spicy notes all held together by the most distinct tequila barrel character that I have ever encountered in a beer so far, lending a mild, warming presence to this that never becomes too boozy though.

While this is somewhat dominated by the quite vibrant lime zest, the sweet agave syrup that never feels cloying and distinct tequila barrel notes round this out rather nicely. The rather mild tartness and saltiness is not entirely out of character for a classic Gose and fits in very well with the overall flavor profile here.

Hat's off to Twin Elephant. I think their use of Belma and Nugget hops in Savage Henry was ingenious. It has that nice berry in the background but lots of spicy bitterness. It's a great ale!

Rather than going to more barrel aged stouts, I went in the opposite direction (for the time being). I did a blind side-by-side with three beers from countries that I haven't had any beers from before. I'm assuming that they are all adjunct lagers (and I don't mean the coffee kind), but at the very least, they all claim to be lagers. All three were drinkable. The bottom two weren't very good, but weren't offensive in any way. I'd have no trouble drinking more of my favorite.

My favorite of the three was:

    Brasserie Nationale d'Haiti - Prestige
The label of this one claims "Pride of Haiti, Brewed in Holland." So for all of the country tickers out there who claim they've had a beer from Haiti: well... kinda yes, kinda no. This one was clearly my favorite in the blind tasting, so I'm sorry to say it, but perhaps the European origin mattered. It was crisp with some malt sweetness, perhaps a little DMS, and even some bitterness to balance things out. It was put together well.

I didn't rank the other two beers:

    Cervecería Centro Americana - Famosa
This one was from Guatemala. It was remarkably less flavorful than the others but it still had an unpleasant earthiness to it... and that was about it. Body was fuller than the others and it was the driest of the three.

    Cerveceria La Constancia - Pilsener
This one was from El Salvador. It was crisp and had a slight sour tang as well as a little sweetness. It had an odd vegetal character but this was not a prominent element.

Been waiting for this to get to our shelves since reading about it about here. Sierra Nevada's 40th anniversary ale.

Look: An ever so slightly hazy golden color with a one inch head of loose bubbles.

Smell: surprisingly fruity. Mostly citrus zest but there's a tropical note too. A little honey and some light malt.

Taste: Not the pine bomb I was promised on the label but there is pine. More citrus zest. I'm not getting the caramel malt note referenced on the label. Moderate bitterness.

Feel: Fairly crisp and light for a 6% IPA. Somewhat dry finish with some nice hoppy bitterness in the cheeks on the way down. Moderate carb.

Overall: A very tasty beer but based on the description I was expecting a bit more heft and piney bitterness. Instead it's a just a very drinkable and approachable beer. A bit like a less malty SN Pale Ale I think. Here's to 40 more years of Sierra Nevada.

It's just Bombardier - a bitter or pale ale. People on BeerAdvocate tend to call such beers ESBs (even though the producers don't)... and producers have often called such things amber ales too. All of the above is just English pale ale by other names. The newer packaging of that beer states "amber" now. Your packaging is older. Here's a post I made about it with links to a bunch of relevant sites and articles. It's a good read.

Urgose, a Gose brewed with wormwood, pine needles, cinnamon, coriander and salt, fermented in a coolship with a yeast strain from 1940 and aged in wooden barrels for two years in collaboration between German breweries Freigeist Bierkultur and Ritterguts Gose (6% ABV).

Pours a cloudy, dark amber coloration with a medium, fizzy head. Smells of doughy wheat malt, fruity yeast esters and oak, with just a hint of funk, cinnamon and pine coming through as well.

Taste is an excellent balance of sweet'ish, doughy wheat malt, distinct fruity esters of green apple and gooseberry, with lighter blue cheese funk, resinous pine needle and earthy oak notes, as well as just a hint of spices. Finishes with a medium tartness and some funk and yeast esters lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a medium bodyand carbonation.

A rather rich and complex Gose that almost drifts off into Lambic territory, with a distinct, funky brett character from the coolship fermentation and aging in wooden barrels for two years. There's a great balance of light malt, fruity yeast esters, funky character and subtle wood and tartness at play here, with the pine needles and perhaps wormwood adding a rather welcome herbal, resinous dimension to this while the spices remain firmly in the background. Perhaps not the most typical, but a rather enjoyable, old-fashioned and rather complex example of the style.

Evening. Could it be an all Red Superbowl?
I cracked one of these earlier in the week and jammed it down my neck but I still consider this a new beer. This is a fairly new brewery out of Fall River Ma.
Canned Heat Suppah NEIPA canned 12/31.
Pours a hazy yellow/gold with a nice creamy off white head that hangs with lots of lacing.
Wonderful aroma of peach, apricot, pineapple, tangerine, grapefruit, pine, floral and sticky hops, green bud.
Taste follows with citrus fruits, stonefruits, pine resin, grapefruit rind, hint of white grape, pineapple. Full flavored and juicy yet pleasantly bitter. Nice balance with all of that.
Medium bodied, carbonation lasts throughout, dry finish, zero hint of 8%, bitter, lip smacking sticky hops. Soft in the mouth. Delicious.
My first impression was correct. This beer is very, very good. They nailed this style. For this particular beer they should be mentioned in the conversation with Trillium and TH.
Over and out.....Pack or 49ers..we shall see. Cheers![IMG]
