As a Vikings fan of old (some would say ancient) vintage, I can only say that I still go into a zombie state when I see Drew Pearson's catch in the 1975 playoffs. That and the 1998 Vikings teams were the best Minnesota teams I've seen in my fandom dating to 1971, and both lost in brutal fashion (as did the 2009 Vikes, the 3rd best Vikings team, IMHO).

Despite the proliferation of the passing game in the NFL, I like three things in football (at any level:

    1. Strong defensive play
    2. Team speed
    3. Reliance on the running game

The first ensures you're almost always in any game, the second strikes fear in any opponent, and the third simply states, "We are going to punish you physically until you fold." The 49ers check the first and third boxes in this Super matchup, with the 3rd pretty much a push (the 49ers have more defensive speed, the Chiefs are scary fast offensively), IMHO.

But then there's Mahomes. He's the most talented passer I've ever seen in the NFL (yep, I typed that), and he's REALLY good leading that team. I rarely bet - except on the Super Bowl, which I've bet probably the last 20 years or so, almost always the money line on the team I think will win.

I'm not betting this year - too close to call, IMHO. The 49ers are better defensively and running the ball, the Chiefs have a generational talent playing at his peak. I think it'll be a great game, and like you, I'd love to see the Chiefs win.

Omniscient Signal is DDH DIPA from Public Access Liquids, brewed at Dorchester Brew Co -this pale, cloudy can pour hosts a thin cap of fine foam and prickly aroma of pineapple and orange juice. The flavor is rich with tropical fruit; lime, kiwi and some cherry are included. The hop bitterness is moderate and there is a peppery note and a dry finish. This is a flavorful and interesting brew.

    Hello New beer Sunday!!!

It is a beautiful day in central Minnesota, so a short trip was in order.

At the Nordic Brewing in Monticello, Minnesota, and enjoying this

    https://m.imgur.com/gallery/HUXTEsk

It is called Roses Are Free, and it is a Saison.

The aroma would lead me to think thos would be a tart beer. While there is a tart element to it, it's more sweet. The sweet and tart work well together to create a tasty beer.

Good afternoon NBS, and thanks @lordofthewiens for the start. Likewise the consumption here has been dropping. A variety of factors. Went on a great 4 hr hike with #1 son (visiting from overseas) and a best friend (40yrs) from highschool days to today. Great time with 2 beers!
Todays offering is from Dupont. I read an article in Beer and Brewing about this and was quite happy to find this years batch at our favrite store.
    Cheers all

    Avec Les Bons Voeux

    Brasserie Dupont sprl
    Belgian Saison | 9.5% ABV

    4.19/5 rDev +0.2% | Average: 4.18
    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

Poured from a 375 ml bottle into the test glass.
A - Bright sunflower, oney color. Superb carbonation feeds a pillowy white cap of 2", lacing has Ftrench detailing and quite fancy.
S - Dupont yeast, white pepper, honeysuckle, add a bed of rich grain, warm rising wheat bread, hints of Physethia, and a bit of vanilla.and orange peel. All in a clean barn.
T - Ranges widely, Honey on wheat toast, some orange marmalade, grainy bread out of the oven torn open. Dusty cheese rime. Fantastic
M - Medium in body, a hefty sweet start then clean honey wave, cleared by carbonation. Linger is Pineapple cake and green tea in structure. The sweet and funk waging a bit of a street fight, thats worth the time to explore.
O - A classic for a reason, hefty on the palate, rich in each other aspect, love the notes of clove in honey, in Dupont yeast, with white pepper. A treat to be had for certain

Last week, for beer review #2555, I went with, naturally, 2555 from Kane - and gifted by the very gracious @SammyJaxxxx in the most recent NBS BIF.

This week, I am following it up with Kane's anniversary beer from two years prior: One Thousand Eight Hundred Twenty Five, bottled in 2016 to celebrate their 5th anniversary and, like 2555, a rye barrel aged Belgian quad aged for a year, and blended with the previous anniversary iterations.

For this one, I'm going to link my full review (as always), but in this thread I'm going to mostly compare this one to 2555.

With an extra two years in the bottle over 2555, the two most significant differences I notice right off the bat are perhaps predictable: a touch of oxidation (in particular on the nose), and a flavor profile that leans more toward sweet than dry spice.

1825 is also livelier on the palate, despite the extra time to smooth out the whiskey and ABV sting. It's still a beer you can savor on the palate, almost indefinitely, but 2555 is a beer you could let linger for as long as you'd like without feeling any real sting or discomfort. Simply put: this brew is smooth, but not as smooth as what they would come up with two years later.

I think I like this flavor profile a little more. While the age may have contributed to a sweeter overall taste, it also undoubtedly dulled the rye whiskey flavors, and allowed some oxidation to creep in - which means that it's impossible to truly compare these brews on a 1-for-1 basis, so admittedly I'm making some minor assumptions and leaps to come to that conclusion (not to mention day-to-day and week-to-week palate inconsistencies). Still, I'm comfortable averring that this anniversary ale is sweeter, tastier, but less smooth than the 7th iteration.

Is this another fantastic example of careful aging and blending by Kane? Absolutely. Really, really damn impressive overall. Kane isn't tossing booze bombs into barrels for 3-6 months just to toss "barrel aged" on the label; they are really trying to extract a very specific flavor profile from the wood, are willing to put in the time and patience to achieve that result, and then on top of it all exercise their blending muscles to create these anniversary ales. The results, based on the two I've tried, are phenomenal.

    Full review below.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26676/250338/?ba=Roguer#review
    4.37 / +0.2%

And the numbers validate my expressed opinion, above.
    2555: 3.75 / 4.25 / 4.5 / 4.75 / 4.5 for a 4.42 (-0.2% rDev) weighted average.
    1825: 4.25 / 4.0 / 4.5 / 4.5 / 4.5 for a 4.37 (+0.2% rDev) weighted average.
1825 has the better appearance; 2555 has the better mouthfeel; both are damn impressive overall.

    Cheers!

    Hey what's going on?!

I hosted a book club gathering, and it was quite a good party and food. In fact have a left over sampler of Sierra Nevada to work on. Now I am doing another one except it's an odd mix.

It is the Superbowl as we all know I am sure, but I've started a new tradition every year.

    CREPE DAY!...

This isn't anything new really.. it's basically crêpe day as I like to call it.. me being one... not French... two... not Catholic... and three a crêpe eating fiend.

it so happens to coincide with the Superbowl, so my dinner tonight will be...

Mushroom, and Grueyer cheese ham stuffed crepes...

    and chicken wings...

It's going to be awesome. It's just an excuse to eat these things which everyone in France does during Candlemas (which is what the real day is). it has a long history beyond eating of course...

In the meantime I grabbed many new beers, fact I've had been wanting to try this one for some time because it was at one point the top rated beer in Virginia some time ago. In fact it's release was a big deal causing much grief and frustration for some as people dived over each other to get it. One post on the forum here even talked about how someone bought thousands of dollars worth of the beer, and people were pissed.

Fast forward years latter, there's a bunch of six packs of it at Total Wine all easy to grab.

The more things change... the more they stay the same..

Anyway folks... on to a new beer. What's new for our hero today?

Poured from the bottle into a large snifter glass.

Milky looking out of the bottle with a light it and making a simple black walnut opaque appearance. Head creation is minimal, making a good light mocha to tan color, but with kind of a watery sheen looking top.

The beers aroma has taken to the barrel very nicely. Excellent sense of fruity oak and whiskey notes, with a mixing of char and tobacco leaf like sweetness. Hits a little hot and boozy though, with not much sensing roast character or chocolate notes. Almost comes off more as like a good brandy interestingly. Still very nice, if actually exceptional smell.

Palate is very thin. Watery sensing body that hits a little char on first sip. Mid palate washes in a bit of steely and almost metallic twinge of fruit and whiskey, not quite getting the richness it should deserve. Nice touches of fruited sensing whiskey on the finish, but not much thick malt depth flavor to back it up. Hints an interesting prune like quality also. A bit of strange dryness without even tannic notes which just seems odd.

This beer comes off tasting more like something spiked than aged. Not sure what all the big deal was with this beer, while drinkable and unique there have been much better ones made in this style.

    look: 3.75 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5 | Final Score: 3.7

    Cheers!

Siamese Pachyderm an Imperial Pilsner brewed as a collaboration between 2 NJ breweries The Alementary in Hackensack and Twin Elephant in Chatham. This beer is brewed with "an Italian heritage Pilsner malt and triticale from North Carolina, and finished with a dry-hop mix of Mosaic, Calista, and Belma". It's ABV is 8.3%. Poured from a 16 OZ can it's golden in color with a thick white lasting head. Great aroma of malt and citrus. The taste is the same malty and citrus and balanced. The mouthfeel is full and the finish off dry. Great beer. This is my 1st wow beer of 2020. It's not wow at 1st taste but it's wow by the end of the pint.

A decent beer, but fell a little short in terms of what i want in a pilsner - ran kinda IPA-like, with more orange flavors and a bigger body than I expected... Has some biscuit with marmalade suggestions, floral and herbal notes on the nose, light-medium-bodied, amply carbonated; cleaning bitterness toward the back-end... Sweet shellac of dark citrus rind and hewn-grain lingers on the finish...

A little too round, sweet, and fruity for my tastes in a pilsner...

Well, I'm back from the gym and earned back those beer calories I consumed in the wee hours watching the Australian Open. Having just burned 1,260 calories, I can afford this new beer, which I was gifted at Christmas and finally am getting around to trying. It is:

Voodoo Brewery - BoogieBrau (Bavarian Style 6.5 % Zwickel Pilsner collaboration with Oskar Blues) - My overall rating = 3.95

Having this on a Palindrome Day (02-02-2020) near Pittsburgh, PA from a 16oz canned on 2019-08-16

A - Hazy straw with a 4-finger pillowy-white head that sticks around leaving decent lace

S - Fresh bread with pear and honey jam. Quite floral. Inviting.

T - Lightly toasted fresh white bread, pear, lemon rind, herbal spice and medicinal bitterness.

    M - Medium-full body and light-medium carbonation.

O - It's an full-flavored, well-hopped take on a Zwickel Pilsner. A bit over the top for me but that's OK; it's Super Bowl Sunday.

Now the test will be if I can keep my food and beer consumption calories for the rest of the day somewhat in control so I wake up tomorrow morning the same weight as I was today. Two major sporting events that I like on the same day is tough!

Hoppy CANtinued New More Odds 'n' Sods Beer Sunday (Week 780)!

For @Tucquan : Many thanks for reminding me that today is this year's Palindrome Day! Do you know the first in recorded history? "Madam, I'm Adam!" 8=)

For @JackHorzempa : Believe it or don't, my Mom-Za relocated to Chico, CA in 1987 after my brother graduated from HS & there was no reason for her & Pops to CANtinue as a couple, although they never divorced. I was already stationed on the West Coast & once I beCAN shore duty at NAS Alameda, I went up on the bus for Thanksgiving that year. I'm pretty sure that was my intro to SN, SNPA & definitely my first visit to the brewery.

For @TheDoctor : Hey, I made it to the Forum in 1993 to watch a Stars/Habs tête à tête! I hit four of the Original 6 buildings (CHI, BOS, TOR & MTL) by design & I was stunned by the reverence at The Forum. By then, my French had returned in spades by virtue of being a USS Normandy (CG-60) plankowner & repeated visits to France, restoring four years of HS French. I sang along in French to the surprise of seatmates. I know from whence I speak.

Which brings me to CANother great hockey memory: The Norm D. opened the Staten Island Naval Shipyard in October 1990 & when we were inport (which wasn't often), my green ID card was like a key to the city. I was a fixture in the inexpensive Blue seats at Madison Square Garden & I was accustomed to crazy nonsense, like a guy in a tailored suit offering me a rail of coke from his mirror (!) & a solid stream of profanity behind me on CANother ocCANsion. I finally felt CANpelled to say something since it was language to make even this salty sailor blush. I turned around only to realize that it was an 11-y/o girl & her 8-y/o brother! :astonished: The third & last was Les Habs in town, so we got both anthems. The two Latinos next to me had the tunes, but the lyrics were whack. Curious, I inquired & was told that they sung both in Spanish!:flushed: Yow!

My next beer has nothing to do with hockey, but everything to do with a return to my DelMarVa (+ DC) madness:

I recently retired, and like you, @lordofthewiens, I find I am drinking much less than I was even just before I retired. I haven't given it too much thought, but it is a good thing, and it may be related to no longer having the need to "unwind" (which is also a good thing).

I don't give two hoots about the NFL as a whole, with only passing interest in a couple of teams, none of which are in the Super Bowl. The league is run by a man with no principles whatsoever, has a renegade dynasty, and too many players who are just plain unlikable.

    The beer in a moment...

Happy SBS, NBS crew. I'm back from lunch and watching the futility that usually befalls the local hockey when playing their rivals to the east-northeeast. Need something to quench my thirst as I yell at the TV - something I am unlikely to be doing in the big game later on.

Today's beer is one I have high hopes for. I've appreciated, liked, and loved about every von Trapp beer I've had. Despite this, I had low expectations for the last new one I had. The Double IPL exceeded expectations by a goodly amount. Which leads me to this week's beer, for which I have moderately high hopes - Elevation 4393, a collaboration with Wormtown Brewery (I have had one beer by them, but it wasn't the Be Hoppy IPA of which this is a lager spin off).
Ok, popping the can an pouring this, I am already pleasantly surprised. The general scents of pine and fresh cut grass are already hitting my nostrils (not overly powerfully, but providing a Pavlovian response). A hazed beer that blocks about 50% of the light supports a foamy head that didn't billow as much as I expected. Despite this, the cap was nice, and didn't disappear, leaving white splotches and spots on the glass.

Nose is a bit of a surprise as I get closer. There's a tad more grass than pine, but neither are as strong as expected given I sensed them in the pour. This seems caused by malt notes that weren't involved earlier. There's a cereal like note and a mild butterscotch (not too strong) in the malt sweetness.

The taste starts with a modest sweet note that only has a fleeting butterscotch aspect (maybe in part because I am expecting it). Grassy notes come next, followed by some stone fruit notes - though they are shrouded by the bitter aspects of the aforementioned grass. Malt notes carry through this to the end taste, but a some pine resin sneaks from the shadows and plants a foot in the aftertaste.

A little more full than a typical lager, the feel (especially when combined with the bitter aspects) reminds me a bit of a lighter, cleaner, regular IPA. I like a good bit about this beer, but the light butterscotch notes are just distracting enough to me to not give it as high a score as the IPL.

The first of two planned for the day (and you might guess the 2nd if you're from MN or surrounds...)

    Schell's Stag Series Nordic IPA
    ABV: 6.5%
    IBU: NA

Fruity aroma: pineapple, citrus - perhaps orange? - tropical fruits.

Color is cloudy burnt orange (brighter with a backlight) and a good level of fine carb bubbles rising to a tall, slightly off-white bubbly-thick head. The head recedes fairly quickly, leaving great-looking strings of lacing around the glass. After just a few minutes, the head is a cap with mounds of thick bubbles.

Taste is different; taking me a bit to characterize it. The pineapple and tropical fruits from the aroma are there, and strongly so, but the taste at the forefront is interesting, very nice and enjoyable, but hard for me to describe (I checked some other reviews - they were no help... maybe it's just me...)

It is a good tasting beer, despite my lack of words to describe it. There is some cracker malt presence behind the fruit flavors. A moderate bitterness begins a few seconds after each taste, that grows stronger and lingers into the aftertaste. This is not WC IPA level of bitterness, or even a Midwest IPA level, but more than sufficient to meet expectations for an IPA. The bitterness grows as you drink the beer.

The mouth feel has a solid body with decent carbonation.

    The finish is semi-dry.

    Overall, a very good IPA.
