Hey gang! For my first NBS post, I'm enjoying a beer that has been on my radar for a while, Fayston Maple from Lawson's.

Appearance - Pitch black with a nice tan head.
Aroma - Mostly just getting a roasty smell.
Taste - This is where it really shines. Getting lots of roasty flavors, some smoke, very dry. Just when I thought "Well, where's the maple?" you get it on back end, very subtle. I've had some maple stouts that are way too sweet (like IHOP sweet), but this is so well balanced. Really delicious as it warms.
Texture - Thick, but not chewy. Great mouthfeel and good carbonation.
Overall, great beer and glad I got to try it (thanks, @SierraNevallagash). I would give it 4.5

OMG! To see that one in a can now. I remember a decade or so ago, offering up anything I could to get hold of one. Shit, the guy I traded with said he got it at some farmers market setup from Sean Lawson himself. Hand numbered bottle and all.

We had to put down our golden retriever, I was crushed. My wife and kids surprised me a year later with a rescue dog that was named Max. We named the new family member " Tuukka" after the Boston Bruins goalkeeper. Very playful and a handsome dog, he is an important family member.

in Worcester on business. Finish up work early and I have two options: head back to the office or head over to TreeHouse. You know where this story is headed. They two beers that I want, one of them being King Jjjuliuss.

Relatively short line for a rainy Monday, cute golden puppy in line ahead of me greeting everyone. Great breed. I am called up to the serving line and am waited on by an original pour girl, Lauren, aka "L-Dog." We exchange niceties about a mutual friend and former treehouse employee, “ The Dentist.” I get my beer and pay up and the memories of Dean yelling, “Bigggg Tipper” echo thru the canyons of my mind.

Canned on 2.4.2020, opened on 2.10.2020, poured into a Treehouse teku glass

“Stay hungry, stay foolish”

Two finger soapy white, big bubbled foam cap with great retention, settles to a thick white ring and solid island after five minutes. Floating above the obligatory NE style hazy orange liquid.

aroma is orange, mango, apricot, tangerine, kumquat

taste is “oh my!” orange dominant, mango

hop taste, no bite, chug a lug smooth, hop taste nicely lingers

For today's beer I've chosen something that sat in my cellar for far too long, migrated to my kitchen fridge a few months ago as a means to motivate me to drink it, and is now finally taking its rightful place in my belly.

Also, I'm a cat person. That's right, I said it. I'm a cat person. To that end, you're getting pictures of two of our three cats, like it or not! (Poorly written review below cat pictures)

Schneider – Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock

12% ABV – Bottled 2016

L: Pours a dark brown that I would have thought was a root beer if I didn't know better. Very little head retention and no lacing, but it's also 4 years old, so no idea if that's driven by its age.

S: Nice malty smell, with some booze also noticeable, but not overpoweringly so.

T: Interesting. I'm not sophisticated enough to pick up on what the underlying ingredients are, but this is fairly enjoyable. I can taste the alcohol, but it's fairly balanced given it's 12% ABV.

F: Very little to say on feel. Low carbonation, but again, it's 4 years old, so.....

O: I like it, but don't love it. Definitely not a style I'm super familiar with, so this may take some warming up to. For me, this is a sipper that I'll likely enjoy over the next hour +.

Afternoon all, been meaning to get involved here on NBS for some time, and figured today was as good a day as any to start. 15th anniversary just makes it all the better!

My new beer is a baltic porter from Finnish brewery Sinebrychoff. Founded in 1819, they are one of the largest Finnish breweries today and are now part of Carlsberg Group.

The appearance of this beer is top notch. It pours a lovely dark brown almost black - completely opaque and rather "thick" in appearance. The head is pillowy, 3-4 fingers high and mocha colored. It dissipated slowly, but steadily, leaving a thin layer of sudsy foam on top of the beer.

The aroma had notes of roasted malts, some dark fruits, licorice, and dry cocoa. There was a slight smoky aroma reminiscent of smoked meat.

The taste followed the nose with notes of roasted malts, cocoa, dark fruit and licorice, with a smoky finish. Very earthy almost herbal hops provide some bittering on the back end. A light smokiness came through in a more pronounced manner as the beer warmed up.

Feel was medium bodied with a certain dry chalkiness to it. Moderate carbonation provided a prickle sensation on the tongue almost immediately. The dryness noted previously carried into the finish.

Overall this was a really nice baltic porter. There was something about the smokiness in this one that I personally didn't like - I found it to be lacking the more pronounced character that I like from the smoky porters ... but in not being pronounced enough, what was there just didn't meld well with the other flavors. Either go big or go home ... or in this case, either smoke it or don't ...

As for the theme of the NBS this week, we had 2 dogs growing up - a golden retriever named Duke and a Scottish Terrier named Bethie. Both of them passed some years ago and at this stage in life we don't have any dogs, but I do look forward to getting a dog again someday.

This is Cobb, my previous rescue dog, about 6 months before he succumbed to Hemangiosarcoma (a particularly nasty form of cancer) at the age of 10 when he was otherwise healthy as a horse. He's exhausted here from his favorite activity - swimming half way across a lake to retrieve a stick. A glass raised to all 4 legged friends past and present!

Back to beer! I recently grabbed Bell's new "Official" IPA which the can describes as a hazy IPA that clocks in at 6.4% ABV. This particular 4 pack was canned on 12/3/19 and the price was right at $12. Unlike a lot of other far-flung regional beers on our shelves, it's been great to have Two Hearted here so I'm hoping this might be another well priced IPA option to add to the rotation.

Look: Pours a light golden color with a frothy 1 inch head. The beer is indeed moderately hazy, but it appears as a haze within a thinner beer rather than the big, thick sort of haze you'd expect with a stereotypical Treehouse sort of beer.

Smell: Big nose right out of the can and smells at first more along the lines of what you'd expect from a west coast IPA. Big whiff of pine and grapefruit rind, but then there are those fruity notes too - and not in the way that Two Hearted has fruity notes. These are definitely more in that newer school fresh peach/apricot vein. The malt notes are light and sort of "wheaty".

Taste: Follows the nose with some dank flavors coming through now. Really pleasant balance of the pine and fruit flavors. Those wheaty malt notes remain light but present. Bitterness is on the low end of moderate. Finish is pretty clean, though that wheatiness lingers a bit in the aftertaste more than I might have liked.

Feel: very interesting. It does have a certain softness compared to something like Two Hearted, but it doesn't have any of the "thick" feel that haze bomb style IPAs would have. It's crisper and lighter bodied than that, with more noticeable carbonation.

Overall: I'm really digging this. It's got a great combination of attributes from different eras of IPAs and just comes together really well. This will indeed join the rotation of well priced hoppy 4 packs.

9% ABV, an imperial oatmeal stout (I am a big fan of their normal imperial: Night Tripper) with maple syrup, vanilla and cinnamon added.
Pours very dark, good head that settles slowly and leaves light lacing. Mouth feel is smooth and almost viscous as a BA brew.
Taste, well, very good despite the fact that the cinnamon was more prominent than the other flavorings. I suppose if you like cinnamon in your hot chocolate then you will be loving this, I’m just not that person. It’s quite good, but I have beers I like better. May be interesting to see how this cellars.

But I always have been, and our family is a dog family. I am an only child but my uncle showed up with my first dog when I was 4. He told my dad that she would probably be about 30 lbs. My dad asked then why does she have feet the size of snow shoes. Hawk was a German Shepard Malamute X and ended up weighing 155. So the only sibling I had was a dog the size of a bear lol.

Our two pups today are both from Rezdog Rescue. A local lady goes to the reservation and picks up the pups, gets them spayed and neutered and finds excellent homes for them. Barney and Lizzie are 2 and 1 respectively and full of energy. It’s never a dull moment.

This is the 3rd?IIRC rotation of this beer, but the 1st time I've timed it right & gotten hold of it. Don't know what to expect, other than it's probably good, if others' smilies & thumbs-ups are accurate. Got this with NBS in mind. Lots of choices, & this is one of the few times where the can art influenced the mental coin-flip . *shrug*

Looks like pineapple juice , with a head.
Smells like a pineapple smoothie +/- , with a little citrus.
Tastes like alcoholic pineapple+orange (fresh-squeezed) juice +/-
Feel is somewhat light, given the 7.1% abv.
Overall , nothing special , but guessing that estimation might go up in hot weather. Pleasant & easy-drinking , so not disappointed that I got the full pack , rather than just a single.

Here he is as a baby I love the brown spots above his eyes

This is him at the end of 2019

And from last October, he had to go to the dogwash after having fun at the dogpark

Up on my 2nd acid reflux attack of the night (and it's only 1ish in the am), so, I'm checking in here and
Whoa! I forgot to post my NBS beer again!
Today (yesterday) I went with a new beer from a 6er I bought on a whim at the grocery store. Scuttlebutt, in Everett, Washington, is one of those breweries that makes consistently mediocre beers, and has done so for as long as I'v been a beer geek (nearly 20yrs), always in traditional, stogy English styles. So when I saw a 6er of a beer called Night Circus, purporting to be a beer brewed with coconut and coffee, I was definitely intrigued.

The base beer turned out to be a somewhat robust porter (the brewery calls it a porter, whereas whoever added it to BA did so as a brown ale) at 7.1% abv, and, while not exactly an amazing beer (lack of head retention, too thin for a porter), is quite drinkable for all it's weirdness. Although not something I'd want to session, the coconut and coffee go rather well together. So, props to Scuttlebutt Brewing for doing something a bit out of the box.

As for the topic @lordofthewiens chose, I can disclose I am definitely a dog guy, having grown up with two German Shepherds and a German Shepherd-Sampled mix, but I'm in an apartment that doesn't allow them. Also, as I prefer somewhat larger dogs that shoild have a yard to play in, and work weird hours on a somewhat inconsistent basis, it probably wouldn't be an ideal situation if dogs were allowed in my building. So, I have to limit myself to hanging out with friends' dogs.

An aggressive pour reveals a dark blackish beer with a lot of leakage to mahogany on the edges and a substantial tan head that doesn’t track a whole bunch, probably due to the high ABV (13.5%).

The bourbon is REALLY forward on the nose, leaping from the bomber to assault your olfactory senses. Yet it’s a polite enough host (because it is the star of this show) to allow some chocolate notes to emerge, and some vanilla as well.

The taste defies the look and the nose - the bourbon is certainly a significant presence, but man oh man is the chocolate/vanilla flavor on point, and there’s some woodiness as well that imparts an oak flavor. Wow, is this a magnificent flavor bomb.

The mouthfeel is surprisingly full given the appearance - it’s not creamy, but it lives in creamy’s neighborhood. When I popped this open and the look was so thin and the bourbon was whackin’ me upside the head with a 2 x 4 (NOTE: I am NOT a bourbon drinker), I was a bit concerned, but this is an outstanding BA RIS. I’d drink this any day.
