Jeff, there was no smoking permitted inside the pubs. While we were there it was nice weather and our preference is to be outside when possible (i.e., pub having outside seating). Well, there is a downside to drinking/dining al fresco - smoking. One of our favorite pubs near our hotel had outdoor seating and we did have beers/diner outside once but the smoking was an issue. On a following visit my wife 'dictated': "We are going inside!"

But inside drinking/eating in the Czech Republic is great!!

    Na Zdravi!

    Jeff,

I just remembered that @invertalon discussed smoking when he posted his trip report on his Germany visit:

“2.) Cigarette Smoking. This is the biggest gripe of the trip, bar none. It’s disgusting and constant, as well as being everywhere. You can’t escape it. You are constantly battling second hand smoke while trying to enjoy your beautiful beer, inside or out. We walked out of a few places just simply due to the intensity of the smoke inside of it (being carried in from outside). It’s extremely bad, everywhere. I get it’s the culture and all that fun stuff, but damn, so happy the US is the way it is in terms of where smokers can be.”

Luckily I did not experience this during my recent visit to the Czech Republic.

    Cheers!

Prices were far from daft in my experience and that is setting aside the premium I am used to paying in Ireland. I was pleasantly surprised with some of the prices actually considering the impressive quality of beers on offer.

daft is subjective i guess, i think the prices i pay for "craft" beer here in northern england are daft but you might not.

what i mean in regard to berlin i guess is comparing the price of a beer in a modern craft beer bar to that in a local eck kneipe

I won't disagree with you there. They are pretty daft here too, but found the comparable prices quite a bit cheaper in Berlin which I suppose I wasn't expected. Take your point completely regarding modern craft bar Vs traditional German bar.

Since your visiting in the spring, you'd most likely be able to visit a spring fest / Frühlingsfest / volksfest somewhere near Munich or in Bavaria.

Of course beer at these fests are usually limited to the main fest beer, and maybe a weiss or a pils.

These spring fests are usually a 1 or 2 tent affair. But they are fun. Mainly locals.

Here is one website I consult when looking for a festival to attend in the Munich area. They are currently updating for 2020, but also listed are some fests from 2019 for reference. Dates can change from year to year.

I’m happy to report I’m now taking in another visit of fantastic München at the end of April for 3 nights. Randomly over a pint 2 pals said how about a beer break away from the war office so a quick look on the phone revealed flights for £61 return. Sold!

Spring fest is on so may pop in here but I think we might pop down to Aying on the Sunday or Monday for a look around. Don’t think they do tours on the Monday but I might email them anyway on the off chance they might.

I’ve been to Munich hunners of times however there’s still I haven’t seen......any obscure tips anyone could recommend??
