For whatever reason I have not had a single one of their beers yet. But this sounds delicious and I will give it a go, thanks!

Hey man, really glad to hear that all is well with you! Always enjoyed your contributions to the site, so even if you aren't drinking, its really nice to see you "out and about" around here.
Sounds like a really nice beer! I've always enjoyed what Ive had from von Trapp. Do you plan to try brewing any beers with the Grüngeist hops? (I'm not even sure if you can get them here in the states as a home-brewer)

Color me very, very interested! Hope I can find it in Pittsburgh. I certainly bought a lot of Von Trapp the last couple of years when I was living in Lancaster.

Just back from a long hike in the woods from my home near Pittsburgh. Beautiful, sunny day with clear skies. A nip to the air but quite pleasant. After a bite to eat, I had the following.

    Bell's - Light Heated Ale (3.7%) - My overall rating = 3.99

    A - Golden-orange with a 1-finger white head and decent lace

S - Significantly odoriferous; approaching a Two Hearted with orange flesh, bread crust, floral.

T - Orange flesh and zest, cracker leaning towards biscuit. Pine. Pretty spicy (earthy and floral). Thankfully, not too bitter. Initially I thought of a Kolsch (instead of an APA) with added orange and spice. There's enough malt flavor sweetness that this doesn't taste like hop tea.

M - Light body and medium carbonation. Refreshing.

O - It's quite well done for the style and the low ABV. It's good enough that I'm willing to put it into rotation in my fridge It did make me want to have a Two Hearted though, which I did right after this.

    Hello everyone..
Rusty rail wolf king warrior stout
    ...solid black
..just above average body with medium carbonation. Carbonation seemed too much for the style but overall a decent feel.
...aroma is alcohol, roasted malt, dark bitter black coffee, licorice, plum
...rare is dark bitter black coffee and licorice first followed by plum, dark fruit, and alcohol
...overall it is a little rough around the edges but was still a very enjoyable beer[IMG]

[IMG] Got this monster from a buddy canned on 2/17/20 Citra, Mosaic, Ekuanot, Amarillo, & Azacca NETIPA. Pours an extremely hazy orange yellow with a 2 finger off white sticky grab that leaves massive sticky gobs of lace with excellent retention. 4.5

Smell is loaded with pineapple, apricot, mandarin, papaya, and white grapefruit. 4.5

Taste follows big apricot, mandarin, and papaya upfront with pineapple and grapefruit in the bold not overly bitter finish. 4.5

Mouthfeel is really big, soft gentle carbonation, sticky not dry, and at 10% loaded with flavor, but goes down very easy. 4.75

Overall I have not how anything from this brewery until now and this is an exceptional and slightly unique brew. 4.5

    Sierra Nevada 40 hoppy anniversary
    ...cloudy amber appearance
...around a medium body. Carbonation seemed to be about average as well
...aroma was a pleasant mix of citrus fruit, malt, pine, earthy, and citrus peel
...taste was citrus, pine, peel, and almost a little sugary malt sweet. Then a bitterness shows up midway and dominates then lingers a long time.
...well made, enjoyable, could have it again but didn't exactly make me fall madly in love with it[IMG]

    Afternoon all!

Its a lovely day here in Chicago - cracked 50 degrees for the first time in a couple weeks ... we had plans to go to the zoo and hang out in the city with family today, but thanks to 2/3 kids coming down with some kind of a stomach bug overnight, we are hunkered down in the house and not going anywhere.

In keeping with the first beer I'll be reviewing here today, I decided to make some beef goulash, so that is simmering on the stove.
Now I have got the Flyers @ Rangers game on as I am enjoying this lovely new beer that showed up on the shelves at my local Binnys this week. Its great, the beer guys at the store know what I like, so any new imports they get in they always give me a heads up. You can imagine my excitement when the new import this week was a Czech dark lager - Zlato Prazske Dark.

The beer pours a lovely dark chocolate brown color with a thin mocha colored velvety head. Really an appealing looking beer. With the aroma, I initially got a malty aroma intermingled with some cocoa notes, but as it warms I get more of a bready aroma with notes of pumpernickel and spicy hops with just a touch of sweetness coming through on the back end.

The taste is initially quite malty, with notes of rustic brown bread, pumpernickel and some light cocoa notes. Some spicy hops are present towards the back end with a light malty sweetness. Feel is medium bodied with a rich malt backbone that really does come through in the overall feel. Bright spritzy carbonation is present.

Overall I was quite excited for this beer since its a stye (Czech dark lager) that I really enjoy, and it did not disappoint. A bit "richer" than some of the other examples of the style Ive had and liked, but this immediately slots in as one of the best ones available to me here in Chicago.

Good afternoon fellow beer nerds! I hope to review a couple today, but let's start with another great Suarez beer.....
    Suarez Family Brewery
    Merkel Montmorency (Pale)

Pours a beautiful rose color that immediately screams “cherry beer”. Robust and appealing head with medium head retention. Smells extremely inviting, especially if like me, you enjoy beers of this type. Plenty of carbonation, but the right amount for this style, and overall a good mouthfeel. Initially, a clear taste of cherry, but without being overwhelming. Cherry is followed by a nice funk taste. Overall, another very good Suarez beer. Their reputation is well deserved!

Avery brewing Barrel-Aged Vanilla Bean Stout. Except for Bourbon Barrel aged I don't care for flavored stouts. My friend who gave me this pint can to try knows this. She said she consider it to be a fine beer and wanted to know my opinion of it anyway. This brew is Bourbon Barrel Aged with added Vanilla beans and is10.5% ABV. It looks like most other Imperial Stout jet black with a thick lasting brown head. The aroma is mild some roasted malt a little Bourbon and a bit more vanilla. The taste is also surprising mild and the vanilla is more noticeable than the other 2 flavors. The mouthfeel is a bit thin for an Imperial stout and soft. There are oats in the grain bill. The finish is a sweet vanilla and long lasting. I told my friend that I could understand why she enjoyed this beer but it's not my cup of tea.

Not doing much today. Watching Cincinnati/Houston, will watch Jack's golf tournament later. My new beer for today is Prairie Noir, an "imperial stout aged in oak whiskey barrels." It was bottled on 11.08.2019 and has an ABV of 13.7%.
In my snifter the beer was black with just a suggestion of a tan head.
Aroma of booze, chocolate, and vanilla.
Strong whiskey taste, chocolate, a bit of vanilla.
Big body, a little too boozy for me.

    Bolero snort pumpkin spice moochiato
    ..solid black
..light carbonation with just above average body, overall a very nice feel
...aroma is nutmeg, more spice, pumpkin, black coffee and cream
..taste really came off like pumpkin pie with whipped cream. The price was done really well as it created the pumpkin pie flavor without the sensation of licking a bowl of dry spices. Sometimes breweries overkill the spice, this was done perfectly.
...I would have this on Thanksgiving or any holiday with dessert.[IMG]photo upload website

Nearly opaque, coal-black body with an incredibly dense, rocky, creamy light tan head; thick, sticky rings of foam cascade down the glass. Fine aroma of cocoa and milk chocolate, mocha and vanilla. The taste is made up of a quietly sweet chocolate and charred grain character; coffee bitterness builds strongly at the mid-point and lasts long into the finish. Heavy, silky smooth body; oily.

I've been searching for this beer for a while now, and happened upon it by accident on a trip yesterday up to Boulder, CO. And I have no idea if newer versions are available (this sample was bottled 2018-09-21), but this relatively older version tastes incredible. The coffee component is well-maintained. Balanced, complex and luxurious!

My legal experiences have been somewhat interesting over my 6+ decades. My worst on the wrong-side of the law was a DUI back in the early 90s. It was a fair bust but certainly was personally trying on many levels, not the least, since being active duty military with extremely high security clearances and a line-number for promotion to SSgt, but surprisingly, my clearances were never pulled or temporarily suspended (highly unusual!), and I retained my promotion and even left that assignment a couple of years later with a Defense Meritorious Service decoration as an E-5 (the DMSM generally awarded to those a couple of pay grades higher than E-5). But the experience was certainly an eye-opener and did cut back on otherwise dangerous and irresponsible behavior.

Another more interesting one was serving on grand jury duty in Richland County, Ohio back in the late 70s. In this instance, the grand jury served for three months, and our job was to listen to the county prosecutor's evidence of alleged crimes and to vote on whether to bring the cases to trial. Lots of stories to be told, but one of my favorite things was drug related cases and having my fellow jurors always looking a me and consulting me at times since I was the only young, long-haired ponytailed juror sitting on the jury (I was probably 20 or 21 at the time).

Regardless, whichever side of the law you find yourself on, I highly recommend staying sober and have good legal advice...

The Pale Ale style, I have been wondering lately why there aren't more and especially as the lower ABV and calories trend gains momentum. Granted some of the session IPAs may be just Pale Ales in disguise but then again not really? Anyway, was shopping recently and came across a new beer from Troegs which happens to be their first new year-round beer in four years, a Pale Ale called Haze Charmer. The stats:

    ABV: 5.5%
Malt: Honey Malt, Malted Wheat, Oats, Pale Malt, Unmalted Wheat
Hops: Citra, El Dorado, Lotus, Mosaic
    Yeast: London 3
IBUs: not currently listed but if I had to guess around 25-30
In both cans and bottles but I grabbed a six pack of bottles. Something I rarely do anymore with a beer I have never had before but I trust Troegs.

    https://troegs.com/beer/haze-charmer/

This beer is delicious! Pours hazy and tastes light, crisp, fruity-ish and flavorful for a lower ABV beer. On the thinner side but expected for this type of beer. The nose is nice and typical NE-ish IPA/hazy beer. This is going to be a great warmer weather beer and will satisfy my hop fix when I am in the mood without being heavier and over the top like I can find many IPAs to be.

Today’s new beer comes courtesy of @scream - thanks buddy!

“Mother of All Storms”(2018) by Pelican Brewing Company, Tillamook, OR. An English- style barleywine aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels for one year:

Bottled 11/9/18. Poured at 56 degrees. Fast fizzy tan head sits momentarily upon a deep amber/brown liquid; almost opaque with some clarity at the edges; no cap retention, ring or lace; thick legs sheet the glass. Nose is sweet dark fruit, malt, rounded alcohol and bourbon. Taste is prunes, sugary raisins, caramel and toffee; light roast malt, bourbon; molasses and oaky middle; no bitterness left from hops; boozy sweet finish. Some heat in the mouth with mild burn on tip of tongue; slick smooth feel; medium full body; low carbonation; face flushing warmth from 14% abv. Overall, I really liked this beer as there are intense layers of flavors, and it is port-like in sweetness, alcohol and feel; moderate plus malty sweet finish with plenty of fruit and barrel notes; highly recommend.

    4.0 | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4.25 | 4.5

Thanks Don! I really enjoyed this beer. I’m sorry you won’t be able to come to Florida this month, but we will catch up in person your next trip. Cheers everybody!
