    Todd & Jason

Beer Advocates in Chicago are very fortunate to have great brewers, bars and bottle shops, all of which are navigating these challenging times as best as possible. Hopleaf has been owned and operated by Michael Roper since 1992. Sadly, they have closed temporarily due to the virus. The Beer Temple, owned and operated by Chris and Margaret Quinn, fortunately have been able to keep their bottle shop open during this difficult time, while their taproom remains closed.

Tonight, Chris and Margaret hosted a live virtual beer tasting (archive available) this evening which was well received, allowing all of us to drink along at home in lieu of being able to go out and celebrate with friends.

This is a request for Beer Advocate's consideration, perhaps a joint effort with Untapped, to host something similar over the next few weeks. Your favorite widely distributed regional/national/international beers can be selected to allow as broad participation as possible. We had very good participation for the latest beer tasting of German Bock offerings hosted in late November by @FBarber

Thanks in advance for your consideration and continued beer advocacy!

    YES!

Count my voice as a loud and clear second for some virtual live tastings, something we've done before here on BA.com. We've done both a single beer style and a single beer (Duvel, anyone?), and I'm all for either including a repeat of something we've already done. For example, we've done American adjunct lagers before ... I'd LOVE to do another round of AALs. Give me a chance to suck down some Lone Star.:stuck_out_tongue:

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Guiness, Chimay Red, whatever you like most from the Boston Beer Company, Dogfish Head, Stone, Bell's, Founders', Oskar Blues or something along that vein.

I don't care what beer/style we do. Pick one, let's go, and in a week or two or three, let's do another.

We can't be restrictive in what brewery/style/beer we're sharing since some folks have no opportunity/desire to go out and get anything, and have to select from what they have on hand.

Great idea. In Indiana we can still buy to go from our local breweries. Maybe a local tasting where everyone buys something local to help out, then posts.

Great points ... the more open the idea, the more inclusive the tasting can be. Perhaps the first beer/beer style could be either a "cellar" online tasting or a "local" tasting? Anything that comes close to the theme counts?

And if anyone has already burned through their beer, they can join in with anything - booze, cider, seltzer, hand sanitizer, etc.

You're making way too much sense right now ...

But seriously ... yes. Make the first one as user-friendly as possible, as informal as a backyard barbecue so even the hand sanitizer-drinkers feel welcome, and perhaps as the day progresses, people can chime in on a possible theme for the second tasting that will work for everybody?

It does need a theme or else it's simply a WBAYDN thread. And the sooner a theme can be hammered out, the sooner people can make safe and healthy plans for an attempt at acquiring theme-related beers (practicing safe and clean social distancing of course).

Maybe that can be the theme- a cellar pull or vintage kind of thing.

This is a good suggestion, Perhaps broad tastings across styles (a lager, an IPA, a stout, etc.), to allow broadest participation for folks not able to purchase the specific beers purchased.

Something like this is happening, every evening at 6:30pm EDT, for the foreseeable future. Virtual Happy Hour, hosted by a different brewer each night. The schedule here, so far, via the New York State Brewers Association : https://thinknydrinkny.com/ny-virtual-happy-hour/

Well, if there was ever a time to become a regular in the WBAYDN thread, it’s now. Join the fun, drink with us weirdos.
Post a pic of your beer, maybe add some music, tell us what you like (or dislike) about what you’re drinking and maybe just bullshit with the rest of the virtual bar. Cheers

I like the cellar pull idea, though since not all have cellars, perhaps the local theme is better. Be nice to have some back stories as to why people like the particular local(s) they chose.

If there is some resistance to a separate thread, the BA powers that be have allowed a few of us to do "theme days" on WBAYDN in the past. Some of us have even enlisted begrudging artistic help in the past.

I think the best theme choices for a beer tasting thread would be one of the following:

    - "supermarket" beer
    - to-go local beer bought from a brewery
    - drinking down the "cellar" stash

There can be a thread for one of these in the first week of April... then one of the other two themes could be used for the first week of May... and so on. :weary:

And modify that first theme to "supermarket/gas station" beer.

    We have...
    • What beer are you drinking now? (daily)
    • New Beer Sunday
    • New Brew Thursday (WBAYDN + NBS hybrid)
    • What Homebrew are you drink now? (in Homebrewing)
    • Cellar Reviews (in Cellaring / Aged Beer)
    ...and probably a few others.

I'm not opposed to doing some very specific online tasting threads on scheduled days, like we've seen in the past in Beer Talk, but otherwise everyone should join the above threads.
