Gooood Morning all you beer enjoyers, mask deployers, quarantiners, in-betweeners, drinkers, thinkers, glass grippers, stout sippers, trade shippers, and all the rest of you estimable friends, it's New Beer Sunday, extra early edition.

Not to make this about me, but can't help an update in as few characters as possible. Day 40 of quarantine, day 240 of recovery from serious health issues. Quit beer, land animal products, sugar, processed foods, cigars, pastries, all oils/fats except olive oil, and on Mayo Clinic DASH plan. I take 2 kinds of meds. have walked over 700 miles, have taken off 45 pounds from my top weight, cut down to 1/2 cup coffee and 1700 mg sodium per day. Doc says one beer occasionally actually good for me now.

Having only one, of course, is a problem, but I am at the point I would love to share a beer with y'all, and maybe another one somewhere down the road. Mentally I am there.

Been thinking/worrying about how Evan and Emily Watson (Plan Bee) and Dan and Tay Suarez (Suarez Family Brewers), and so many others are doing? I feel like I have lost friends when I no longer can enjoy their beers. And now this virus puts all of it at risk. I was thinking of having a Suarez beer, but going with a (hopefully) super funky aged wild apricot ale from Plan Bee for breakfast. How about you? Beer can connect us even when we are sheltering in place.

Why not join us? Feel free to post some pics that make us drool. And please tell us your thoughts about that new beer. Let us know what you like about it. Or don't like about it. Why? What do your senses sense? Reviews don't need to be long, or literary masterpieces, just honest. What's the birdseye lowdown of that beer in your glass?

    Precious, 2014 edition Live review

A touch lighter than pic makes it seem. Was not a gusher.

Sourdough, fruity funk, lemony-limey tart, with hints of oak and apricot that give hope the fruit taste hasn't faded in 5+ years. Drool inducing, full strength aroma.

Good lord, what an immense blast of flavors! Apricot still very evident, a delicious thread of flavor that links bright, almost searing, sour, rounded tart yeastiness, lemon-limey fruit funk, hints of spicy herbal as it warms, light, tannic barrel notes, and just a hint of fusel that adds to this fireworks display of funkitudinal flavor, rather than mars it.

Thick bodied for a wild ale, highly viscous, highly carb'ed in a good way, with a finish that staggers the palate with lingering intensity. A bit of clingy sweetart at end of glass the only ding.

A beer that probably was amazingly apricot-fruity when "fresh', but is drinking as well as I wished it would do. Definitely for those who, like me, enjoy stronger, more intense flavors

Thanks for keeping NBS fresh, fun, and informative for 15+ years. Cheers!

Awesome news and congrats! It's amazing how sneaky too much drinking along with poor eating coupled with aging can be. I work out regularly, am very active and overall watch what I eat but a few years ago I noticed the pounds creeping up. I exercised harder and figured that would make up for it. Nope. I started tracking what I drank and ate and beer was the killer for me...putting away three 8+% beers plus whatever else in a night was doing some damage; and even though I only did this a few nights a week it was enough.

Anyway, got back on track and have been feeling great! I'm still drinking beer but limiting what I drink and when and it's definitely the way to go.

And yes I know how ironic this choice is after what I said above :stuck_out_tongue:

An after midnight beer was Southern Tier Vanilla Whipp Milkshake IPA. I have heard of this style but have never tried it and while I am sure this is a more "generic" example it was pretty damn good. The vanilla stands out on the nose and in the taste is just enough and compliments the hop flavors well. It drinks lightly for a 6.5% beer. Low bitterness but not too sweet. I could definitely drink this again.

Welcome back, Dave!! Good to hear you are at the stage of being able to enjoy a beer, again. I’d love to say, “Come back often” like we do to our first timers, but don’t want to be rude. After all, the part of our societal norms that currently includes wishing everyone to “stay safe” certainly applies here.

So instead I’ll just say, “Sure is satisfying seeing you sip a solitary sampling of suds whilst starting this Sunday’s symposium.”

Cheers to you, and to all NBS participants.

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz Nordic pint glass canned on 4/6/20. Pours a cloudy dark orange with a half finger sticky white head that leaves plenty of thin webs of lace. 4.25

Smell is tangerine, guava, maybe a hint of garlic, apricot, and a hint of grapefruit. 4

Taste follows tangerine stands out, guava, garlic/onion just a hint, apricot, and a little grapefruit very little bitterness. 4

Mouthfeel is a solid medium, sticky not dry, fairly soft carbonation, and at 7% drinks that way and goes down very easy. 4

Overall this is very nice, nothing makes it stand out, but at $13 a 4 pack I would purchase this again. Well done. 4

Thank you @cavedave for kicking off the thread today. Your health update was very encouraging to hear, especially with all of the bad health related news over the past few months. I really look forward to reading your new reviews when you are ready to pull out your first new beer. It should be a very special treat for us all.

Also loved reading your Plan Bee Precious review. I heard of this brewery for the first time earlier this month after watching a video posted on Beer Advocate. I really enjoyed the video, and I will definitely hit this brewery the next time I am able to reach upstate New York.

I was able to try a few new beers for me leading up to New Beer Sunday. A cellar pour from a 2017 Half Acre Orin (4.75, 4.5, 5.0, 4.5, 4.75) was one of the highlights of my year to date. This was truly a beer ready for prime time. I also planned on pouring Three Floyd's Dreadnaught today, but the anticipation led to opening the bottle yesterday. I liked the beer, but it didn't live up to the hype or price point for me (4.0. 3.5, 3.5, 3.75, 3.5).

Golden Prairie Doppel Alt (brewed at Argus Brewing) is my first selection for the day. Sadly Argus brewery is closing (sent an email inquiry to Golden Prairie, which brews out of Argus' Brewery, to see if they will brew elsewhere, awaiting a response).

This beer won the Gold Medal at the 2018 GABF, and I really enjoyed this pour. ABV is 8.7%, but well masked throughout the pour. Bottled date not disclosed.

Appearance: Clear bronze pour, heavy carbonation, light tan head quickly dissipates leaving faint soapy lacing. 3.75

    Aroma:
Bread, caramel, malt and hops, light sweetness. 4.0

    Taste:
Nice refreshing taste, slightly sweet. Fresh dark rye bread leads, pepper and caramel back. This beer was like tasting a nice dark rye bread out of the oven. 4.25

    Mouthfeel:
Medium crisp body, mild carbonation sustained throughout the pour, slightly dry finish. 4.0

    Overall:
    Very good offering, 4.0

I have a few dozen beers to work through over the next few months before considering buying new offerings, but I look forward to reviewing the thread today for great reviews and future purchase ideas!

Good things come in plain packages?

A good friend recently handed me the beer that I will be discussing today. You will see in the photo at the bottom: a can with a ‘blank’ label (in other words no label whatsoever). I remarked to him: kinda looks like the old generic beer that just listed BEER on a white label. Do you remember that beer?

So, what could be inside this mystery can?

Well, I am not 100% sure of all of the details but I will relate what I know:

This beer is from Tired Hands and a few months ago they moved their existing canning line from the primary production brewery, Fermentaria, to one of their other sites. They installed a new line at the Fermentaria and this ‘old’ line will be used for packaging ‘different’ type beers – in this case a can conditioned Saison. Since Tired Hands produces a number of Saison brands I am not sure which brand is inside this mystery can.

As a homebrewer I am well acquainted with bottle conditioning since this is how I package my beer. I suppose the same exact process occurs here except it is in a can vs. a bottle. The only can conditioned beer that I have had to date is canned Sierra Nevada Pale Ale:

“Sierra Nevada puts live yeast into its Pale Ale cans so that it will ‘condition’ after packaging, much like it does with bottles.”

    https://beerpulse.com/2012/07/sierra-nevada-on-the-cans-vs-bottles-debate/

So, onto: Can Conditioned Saison, because they can!

Served in my Gulden Draak tulip glass:

    Appearance:

Hazy straw colored with a one finger white head which dissipates quickly.

    Aroma:

Complex! First I pick up fruity aromas but then there is a hint of barnyard and also a bit of citrus and then….

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose the a complex combination of fruity, barnyard, citrus, etc. There is a bit of tartness and there is low bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Light bodied with a ‘tangy’ finish.

    Overall:

Very good! The complex flavors play very well with each other. My only complaint is that this beer would have benefitted from a bit more body for my palate.

I could envision this beer being a very refreshing summertime sipper.

    Cheers!

@cavedave great to see you, friend! It's wonderful to hear about your progress, and I'm glad you can join us today. (Also, a great, throwback style for the intro!)

Today I have a number of new beers on hand, some that I purchased yesterday, but most courtesy of a ninja box from the very generous @Roy_Hobbs . Picking what to drink today - or realistically, what not to drink - is going to be tough. I've got three beers that are definitely on my radar, and I'm going to start with one of them right now.

Not just Single Shot, which would have been a very nice gift. Single Shot with Vanilla Bean. I honestly didn't even notice that when unpacking; needless to say, I am stoked.

It's rare to find vanilla beans expressed so strongly on the nose. You can even tell they are bourbon vanilla beans (!). Plenty of coffee, too - that's actually the first thing I noticed from the pour, fresh from the fridge.

A strange thing to note - not even a criticism, really - is that it draws sweetness from all of the ingredients - vanilla, bourbon, malt, lactose, even the coffee - and that sweetness comes together in an almost indefinable ... mess? Beautiful mess? Like a surreal painting; there are impressions of things, familiar notes, but the edges aren't clear.

I'm certainly going to savor this as it slowly warms. My ratings could possibly change, as well, but for now, here's my review:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/28743/225955/?ba=Roguer#review
    4.22 / -5.2%

I know I'm tracking a -rDev, but this is still a fantastic start to the day. Huge thanks to @Roy_Hobbs ; this will not be the only brew today from him (nor the only Tree House brew today!).

I've had some German Land- and Kellerbier, with the Zoigl really just being a more traditional Kellerbier, for German Beer Day recently and thought this would be a good opportunity to post some comparitive thoughts on them along with the reviews, which I will be linking this time, in the interest of not bloating this post up too much.

Mönchshof Landbier, Kellerbier and Zoigl by Kulmbacher, all weighing in at 5.4% ABV.

Unfortunately I didn't put these quite in the right order, but I think that this picture already gives a great impression of the hop/malt balance and overall flavor profile simply judging by the coloration here, with the Landbier being the hoppiest, the Kellerbier the maltiest and the Zoigl sitting somewhere inbetween.

The Landbier is indeed the crisp, hoppy and easy-drinking of the bunch, featuring the highest bitterness, but also the highest sweetness, interestingly enough. It's dominated by quite floral and grassy hops, with the doughy malt being soft and in the background except for a distinct honey sweetness. It's not very well-balanced in my opinion, being far too sweet and floral for my personal taste.

The Zoigl is the most balanced of the bunch, with slightly more expressive malts than the Landbier, but hoppier accents than the Kellerbier, with the hops still being somewhat floral, but also a bit more herbal and the malts, while still kinda doughy, feeling a bit breadier as well. The same goes for the sweetness and bitterness, which is pretty even here, with neither feeling particularly distinct, which along with the hops and malts feeling kinda subdued as well actually makes this feel a little bland to me.

The Kellerbier has the most expressive malt profile, with a quite bready and somewhat toasted character, but actually featuring quite a good helping of herbal, earthy hops as well, lending a rather nice balance of light sweetness and good bitterness to this that feels a lot more distinct than with the Zoigl, while this is also a bit more complex, with some nutty, fruity notes also coming through. This has been my clear favorite, being the most well-balanced and complex of the bunch.

So yeah, there's pretty clear progression from the floral/grassy hops of the Landbier through the floral/herbal ones of the Zoigl to the herbal/earthy ones of the Kellerbier. Same goes for the biscuity/doughy malts of the Landbier, the doughy/bready ones of the Zoigl and the bready/toasted ones of the Kellerbier. The Landbier is most crisp and the Kellerbier most complex, with the Zoigl sitting somewhere inbetween. What surprised me a little was the balance with some of these brews. For example the Kellerbier being less sweet and almost just as bitter as the Landbier and the Landbier actually being sweeter than the Kellerbier.

I should also note that the Zoigl was two months older than the other two, assuming equal best-by dates for all, which may have something to do with it feeling so much less expressive.

Great post to start the day @cavedave! Crazy times for sure! Hopefully for Dan & Tay the timing wasn't terrible, as I believe they welcomed a new child to the family right as everything was "locking down". I was fascinated to see that old Plan Bee beer that you reviewed. I had the opportunity to visit Plan Bee for the first time in February, and can't wait to get back. I had no idea they were even brewing that far back!

I think you captured this very well, and I know exactly what you mean. I generally enjoy their stouts, but the sweetness is actually a bit much for me at times. Good choice for a Sunday morning beer, though!
