This is true. The brewery's web site says the smokey flavor comes not from smoked malt but using brewing in the beer in the same kettles their smoked beers are created in.

I deleted the original reply as I researched the brewery's web site where it was clarified the Helles (or pale ale, as they call it on their English-language page) gets its smokey flavor from being brewed int the same kettles as their true rauchbiers...

It could just be my imagination, but I feel like @aleigator has been featuring Belgian and German beers a bit more (as opposed to American) and I'm really enjoying it.

Thank you. The complements move me. I'm surprised that the way that I talk about a beer can provide that for you @Roguer

Well good afternoon everyone! My oldest turned 6 today, so we got a trampoline for him (and the other kids). Seems like we spend a lot more time in the yard these days now that we're always home so hopefully this helps run them ragged. Took me most of the morning to set up, so I really earned this first beer.

Thanks to @zid for bringing up Kölsch! I picked this new one (to me and my local shop) - Sion Kölsch last week and decided to make it my first new beer on this lovely day.

Pours an absolutely crystal-clear bright gold color. Quite effervescent. Nice dense foamy white head, about 3 fingers in height settles then starts to slowly dissipate until just a thin layer of velvety foam remains. Lots of soapy lacing is left on the glass as its consumed. The aroma has notes of light grainy malts, slightly sweet with a light herbal hop aroma coming through. There is a hint, ever so slight of a skunkiness to the beer, but its not unpleasant or overpowering.

Taste is very mild overall but you get those brainy malts up front with a touch of sweetness There are some moderately bitter hops coming through on the back end with an herbal quality to it. Although the beer itself is quite light, it still packs a flavor punch for what it is. Feel is light, and crisp, with some certain smoothness to it. Bright vibrant carbonation with a semi-dry finish.

Overall I really enjoyed this one. Its a really nice Kölsch and was much cheaper than any of the other Kölschs my local chop gets in (Gaffel, Fruh, & Reissdorf) making it much more likely I'd pick this one up again.

Good afternoon NBS and a special thanks to @zid for stopping in and starting us off today.
Spent the bulk of the morning tearing out bittersweet at the cemetery, a rotating zone every spring, its a constant battle. If you see it kill it.
I have been frquenting Coopers Corner in Florence for some time, and in recent months they have been having a fire sale on most botted offerings. The usual suspects, sours, barrel aged, fruited. So I picked up a few over the past months. Thats where todays offering comes in.
The Bruery Terreux Ode Tart, a wonderful oaked Flanders style, lots of tannins, excellent acidity, Although sharing this with my sweetheart is just enough sout/tart for me on any given day
    Stay well all

    Oude Tart

    Bruery Terreux
Flanders Red Ale | 7.5% ABV

    4.19/5 rDev -2.6% | Average: 4.3
    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

Poured from a 750 ml bottle 2015 version into a tall goblet.
A - Red cedar colored backdrop, light can penetrate to show the tiniest carbonation very refined. A thin off white cap quickly exits. During the experience tiny islands develope , dissipate, and reform as a ring on the surface, cling to the glass perimeter.
S - Dark cherry, toasted oak, grape skin, roast malt, some balsamic, hazelnut, that funk from the basement stall. Add some warmth and a lovely fig, and tobacco sneak in as well
T - Dark fruit then cherry, add a bit of cider vinegar, cheese rime, grape seed, interestingly hints of bitter bakers chocolate, red wine vinegar, and subtle tannins
M - Tart to start, balanced acidity, softened by the oak treatment, and time in this case. Initial pass on the palate is sweeping then it steps out in waves, sweet, tart, sweet tart, the linger is forever and cherry candy in a good way.
O - A very good offering, so glad to have had the oportunity, the time has treated this one well, at 5 years, the sweet and the tannins are still a match for the tart side. Well done to the team at The Bruery

I had that one friday. I got a cedar like woodiness from it I found off putting. Weird.

Another  . Sion isn't just pushing Reissdorf taps out of bars, it's even pushing it out of your Reissdorf glass.

I get that kind of feedback every now and then, and while I'm flattered, I don't quite expect it - but the way your descriptions strike me, I suspect it's something similar. Especially the way you put them in context against the style itself; it's very helpful.

It's nice to have you posting here after 6 years away.
In this thread, people post their reaction to a beer rather than just stating what they're drinking.

I'll definitely look to see if this is available around me now. I have enjoyed their other offerings on occasion, some I find a little too much for me. Others I love, but regardless if its not always to my tastes I always really respect the brewery. Maybe its available at Specs or Total Wine and been hiding in plain sight. If I find it, I'll make sure to review here next Sunday.

Russian River -- Pliny the Elder
Strata hops are supposedly full of fruity and berry flavors, perhaps dank weed, but I don't claim to have sensed much of those things. And I never really picked up any distinct Nelson Sauvin hop flavors either. And certainly nothing like cedar in the overall flavor.

Like many hazies/cloudy beers I try, I usually get stale citrus rind and cardboard impressions. With this go around, it was fresh and vibrant citrus and indistinct fruit flavors (perhaps some Strata teasing my taste buds?!).

Well, we all have our unique take on flavors we pick up. And if it works, cool. If it ain't there, well, it ain't. Like Brussel sprouts with me. I've had a few servings that are palatable, but overall, I just can't stand those bitter little cabbages (and I love cabbage!). And that's the way it goes...

I sincerely mean that, there’s some great posters here that I really respect their opinion, your one, but there’s dozens out there that are amazing BAs. I’m really humbled by the scientific knowledge that guys possess, the international components from guys who lived and traveled into the beer Mecca’s. More understanding of the product and process than I’ll ever know. Great site, if your open here you’ll learn a lot.

Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans. A Czech pilsner by Threes Brewing in Brooklyn.

Theres a large, lingering head after an aggressive pour. Appears golden in color with some haze. Smells of sweetly of malt, in a good way. Taste is bready up front with a bit a bit of spicy dryness on the back. An enjoyable beer to share with you all on a day I’d rather be outside.

Brewed in collaboration with Smith & Lentz from Tennessee, who got hit hard by a tornado a few weeks back...that is certainly some bunk luck.

Appreciated this quote from Three’s website: Life is what happened when we were busy making other plans; beer is what happened when we began to figure out where to go from there.
