Boulevard Rye on Rye aged in Templeton Whiskey barrels & aged with Maple Syrup, 13.2% ABV. Really delivers on flavor! 4.11 overall

Can't believe I haven't reviewed this already, this bottle 3 gone from this 4 pack. You can bet your ass I will buy more!

Pours an effervescent chestnut with a little mahogany with 2 fingers of sand colored head. Traces of head retention & lacing

S: Dark fruit, a touch of booze as this warms

T: Brown bread, raisins, figs, spicy & a little boozey rye, dryness up front. Maple dryness & sweetness as this warms, some figs & a little peppery rye as well. Finishes dry with plenty of maple dryness & sweetness, a little caramel, figs & a kiss of leafy hops; just a kiss of Rye Whiskey boozeyness & spicyness

MF: Medium body, restrained carbonation, thickens up as it warms, nice boozey warmth as well

Another high ABV winner from these guys. Never gets too hot

    Hey all, what's going on?!

Well not much, but I am loving this outdoor weather. I hear birds all the time, it's quiet.. sometimes I wish it could stay like this for awhile...

With that said, I don't get many new beers these days as my consumption sticks to some standards. With that said, a few new ones get into my radar. Such as this one.

What is new for our hero today?

Poured from the can into a nonic pint glass.

Very light fluffy khaki colored head, making just nearly three fingers of almost creamy whipped up looking height. Dark brownish copper like red body, with a sense of opacity but not entirely, some ring lacing and a few clumps give some good retention and appearances in the looks department. Great looking brew.

Soft but subtle nose. Touches a soft biscuity like aroma of cookie dough, sort of oatmeal with touches of caramel sweetness in the air. Hints a little vanilla and cake like in the mixture but not a large nose. Quite nice though.

Palate takes the cake (almost literally). Real nice hints of creamy texture, giving a sense of sweet vanilla cake flavors. Mid palate fills up with great solid flavors. Rich caramel and a hint of toasty brown bread on first sip. Mild sense of hop earthy tones and an excellent biscuit to graham cracker caramel sweetness in the mix that his real nicely. Hints a soft bodied faint pine and milky sweetness as well.

Real good sucker for a simple amber ale, and this one has it with a few surprises on the palate.

For my third and final beer, I'm returning to Fox Farm. This will make one robust porter, one funky saison-like table beer, and now a cherry sour aged in oak.

It's a really damn good, with plenty of cherry, and some earthy funk. Nice tones on the palate, including chocolate on the back third, but it doesn't quite have the depth of, say, the better Belgian Kriek Lambics.

On the disappointing front, whether from terroir or funk-inducing yeast, there is a noticeable, rather unpleasant tone shining through on the nose, not unlike moldy damp laundry. The nose is otherwise impressive, but that one tone alone keeps this one from being truly world class. Damn, damn close, though.

Lovely weather here today as well. I've been healthy enough to run all week, so I've taken today off and I've been playing 'Operation' on my car. Now that my passenger seat is out, it may get moved to my room instead of the car as a gaming chair.

But that's not why I wanted to reply! Glad you enjoyed that one. I'll take the hit for not writing 'drink fresh' on it. Apex fills their cans from draught lines, i.e. a crowler, and as such, I feel like they should be drank closer to fresh. I do note that the spicy notes start to come through stronger as the beer ages a little. Regardless, I really wanted to get that one to you and I'm glad I did. One of my favorites in our fair city, but I'm also a big fan of English Dark Milds and the other local option wasn't available at the time. I also agree with your observations in general. Hope you enjoyed!

    Cheers.

Thank you for saying that. Glad I could help. I had no idea that it could have that effect for anyone. Plus, in these times, when someone says "made things feel a little more normal," it carries a lot of extra weight whether intended that way or not. It was really great having @cavedave open last week.

    Happy NBS BA's
I used to work with a guy that used to say " While we are busy making plans life is happening" That was 20 years ago and it defiantly rings true lately
Drinking this for the first time, I messed up and put it in a Yeti, imagine hazy yellow/ pink with no head.

    4 / 4.25/ 4.25 / 4 / 4

Pours hazy yellow slightly orange, thin if any disappearing head,
nose is pineapple, mango tropical with hints of sweetness
taste follows nose, its on the sweet side, maybe tangerine of blood orange
mouth feel is on the thin side, low carbonation, not really much of a bite,
overall I thought it was pretty good, kind of Vicinity with a smoother finish. Extremely easy drinking.

They can only deliver in state, as far as I know. But somehow this was able to get to my local Gary's, who do deliver. So it's in NJ distribution at this point.

I can make a pretty strong argument that Dreadnaught is the best beer Three Floyd’s brews semi-regularly - by a LOT. The move to a 12 oz format is genius, IMHO.

Hello NBS friends. I’m gonna toss a couple of beers your way today, one micro, one (surprisingly) macro.

First up, my appreciation for Oskar Blues can’t be overstated enough. They brew great beers in multiple styles, IMHO, and they were one of the first “craft” breweries to can.

As someone that ships a lotta beer, that was a very positive development for my beer nerdery.

Pours a hazy golden sunset color with a packed-in-concrete bone whit head. The nose is Dankosaurus Rex citrus aromas, with loads of mango, pineapple, and tangerines.

The mango and pineapple flavors dominate the taste, which is a good thing. This is juicy, flavorful, and packs a bite that keeps this in the “old school” IPA camp, which I appreciate.

I could pound this offering from an iconic brewery in our beer nerd world for DAYS. Really well executed, IMHO.

I don’t usually have a new beer on Sunday, but as fate would have it...Boulevard Rye on Rye.rye aged ale with maple syrup. Very good. Reminds me of a Curmudgeon’s Better Half but with less super-sweetness to the maple, probably balanced better by the rye.

Agree on both. Had it for the first time, Wednesday.Would have had it sooner, had I realized that the smoke level is less than their other beers. (I've had ...4? others) Didn't realize it doesn't have smoked malt. It is a "perfect" amount.

Happy Birthday! to the kid.:clap::clap:
I haven't see it either. Here in the outer outskirts of Bingladesh*, things usually arrive weeks after I see it posted on WBAYDN? .

They need to be frozen a few times. They lose most of the bitterness, & get sweeter. Best ones I ever had were ones I dug out of the snow on Christmas night, and sauteed with bacon & onions. Mmmmm!!!

Had a similar beer 5? weeks ago, with mango, mango, more mango, and a little pineapple & coconut. It was wonderful.

Ooooooo!!! I have some watermelon/lime seltzer. Have to try it with some hot pepper. & when I inevitably get Green Zebra , I'll try it with lime & pepper added. :+1:

First hot day of the year (78F) so, of course, today's (1st?) new beer is a big stout:wink:, Catcher In The Rye , a 10% rye stout, aged on vanilla, from The North .
Looks like a typical stout, & as stouts are their top style, not surprising.

Smells like chocolate cake batter (middlin' strength), wet decaying wood, wet earth, light vanilla, with occasional hints of alcohol, similar to those alcohol-soaked whole vanilla beans that Grandma H always had around.

Taste is chocolate liqueur, but less sweet, a little sour tang, as in rye bread crust, some slight spiciness (rye) , though less prominent than with rye IPAs. Light pleasant bitterness, mostly on the latter half.

Feel is smooth & oily, with very, very fine carbonation tingle. This is the one nit I have to pick : wish it had more carbonation, as I usually say with beers from this brewery, but it's a minor thing. No noticeable alcohol, other than my ears warming as I get close to the end of the (1st) glass.

Overall, very enjoyable, and worth a try, if you get the chance. Dangerously easy-drinking.

Greetings to everyone and thanks to @zid for starting the thread! The last few weeks I've been jumping on the thread early, but I forgot to throw this week's cellar pick into the fridge last night(not that it needed much chilling). Better late than never though, I hope everyone and their friends and family are doing well. This is the first week that the pandemic truly hit close to home. I was made aware that two acquaintances have tested positive for the virus. One, luckily, is well on the mend and through the worst of it, but his story of dealing with it sounds harrowing. He's now doing well enough to donate antibodies. The other person is a friend of his that just recently tested positive, and is dealing with the symptoms now. My wife an I have been spending a lot of time in our back yard, so fixing up the patio is her new hobby. We plan on spending a lot of time back there now that all of our summer concerts and travel plans have officially been canceled or postponed. We live in the city and feel fortunate to have a private outdoor space that our dogs can sniff around while we listen to music and enjoy some beers. We've been taking the laptop out back on Friday nights and watching Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn do some incredible banjo picking from their basement in their pajamas. Following that is the Grateful Dead's Shakedown Stream where they stream a classic show on their Youtube channel. Back when I was 14 and seeing my first show I never dreamed that someday I'd be married and sharing this kind of a technology with a musical community during a pandemic. That roundaboutly brings me to today's beer.

"Dark star crashes, pouring its light into ashes
Reason tatters, the forces tear loose from the axis
Searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion
Shall we go, you and I while we can
Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?"

    BBA Dark Star: Coffee
    [IMG]
This is my first taste of anything from Fremont. It's one of those itches that I've been meaning to scratch for a long while, and today was finally the day. Poured into a 10oz. snifter glass, this almost black stout produced a thin 1cm head that dissipated quickly. The aroma was much more coffee forward than I expected after the first pour. As the bottle warmed the bourbon barrel become much more prominent, and notes of chocolate lingered throughout. My first sip was just as coffee forward as the aroma suggested. Bourbon and chocolate were surprisingly held in check, but not forgotten. As it warmed the barrel made itself more known. The chocolate notes stayed on the finish and were appreciated with each fading sip. Only a touch of sweetness made Dark Star easy to drink, but I forced myself to slowly savor it. Toward the end of the bottle I started to detect a bit of dried fruit/raisin, but it was only subtle on my palate. As mentioned previously, the head did not last, but this bottle was not lacking in enjoyable carbonation. It does not have the same body and viscosity of a big RIS, but that makes it even easier to drink. This was a bottle that I'd been saving for a few months, and it did not disappoint. I don't gravitate to many oatmeal stouts these days, but if more of them were on this level I certainly would.

Now that I think of it, I made some spicy refrigerator pickles last year, that had watermelon rind (my own, just picked - thin & crisp) and hot peppers included. Used Green Zebra for half of the liquid. They were well-received, & more were requested for this year.:sunglasses:
