Happy Mother’s Day to all you Mothers out there.

Today is the day we discuss the new beers that we have on hand and tell others about what’s going on in their lives and discuss their beer.

My mother passed away a number of years ago and I think of her often. Being a mother is a tough avocation and we should all appreciate what they do (and have done) for us. If I were to have a drink to honor my mother it would be a glass of wine but since this is BA I will instead be drinking beer.

Now, back to what I came here to say:

    Time for an ‘austere’ beer?

Firstly, for my own benefit (and maybe so of you as well) I checked out the definition for austere. Below is from Merriam Webster Dictionary:

    “Definition of austere:

1a : stern and cold in appearance or manner an austere Puritan

b : somber, grave an austere critic

    2 : morally strict : ascetic

3 : markedly simple or unadorned an austere office an austere style of writing

4 : giving little or no scope for pleasure austere diets

I am going to guess that definition number 3 is what is intended for today’s beer: Tired Hands Austere Modular.

Austere Modular seems to be an interesting experimental beer from Tired Hands Brewing. I have never had this beer before but my understanding is this beer is rotating with each batch brewed quite differently but under the umbrella of being a Pilsner. Below is some information I found on previous versions via web searching.

On BA this beer’s description (Dec 2018):

“Notes: Brewed from a desire to explore lager brewing process. Built from a simple grist of German Pilsner malt, and hopped with German Hallertau Mittelfrüh and New Zealand Pacific Jade.”

From Ratebeer for what is listed as Austere Modular Four (Aug/Oct 2019):

“Brewed from a continued desire to explore and refine our lager brewing process. Composed with a simple grist of German Pilsner malt, and hopped with Hallertau Mittelfrüh and wet Callista from our friend Martin at Hopfen-Kontor in the Hallertau region of Bavaria. Fermented with a yeast derived from one of our favorite Munich breweries, and cold conditioned for three weeks before packaging.”

I am uncertain which iteration this batch is (maybe number 5?) but I do know what was used to brew this beer since I discussed it with the Tired Hands head brewer (Colin McFadden). Colin told me they used Weyermann Pilsner Malt to brew this version and you can read more details below (from the Tired Hands website):

"Pilsner refined by experimentation. Hopped w. Perle, Mittelfrüh, & Spalter Select from our annual trip to Germany. 4.6% abv.

It is of interest that Tired Hands travels every year to Germany to evaluate and purchase German hops.

So today’s version of Austere Modular appears to be more of an ‘old school’ German Pilsner vs. the previous versions. It is also the first time they canned Austere Modular (because we are now drinking beer as take-out?).

So, what does an Austere ‘old school’ German Pilsner taste like? Let’s find out.

Served in my Polish Pilsner glass:

    Appearance:

A pale straw color with a BIG rocky white head.

    Aroma:

A vibrant combination of bready malt and hop aromas of herbal/spicy but also a bit of floral as well.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with the combination of bready malt and herbal/spicy flavors (the floral aspect is not as noticeable). There is a firm bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied with a dry finish.

    Overall:

This beer is excellent. The bready malt flavors and hop flavors just play extremely well together in this beer – a well-balanced Pilsner.

I strongly suspect that Tired Hands will ‘re-imagine’ this recipe for their next iteration of Austere Modular. If they gave me a vote here I would vote “No” to this and just keep this beer as is. Sometimes a recipe just comes together perfectly.

    Cheers!

Nice write up, Jack! Knowing that Tired Hands’ brews some excellent lagers (Trendler series, Helles other people, etc) I had a feeling this was going to be a killer beer. Apparently everyone else did as well, as it sold out pretty quickly. Hopefully next time I’ll pay better attention and get my hands on some; their new restaurant (St. Oner’s) is only a short drive from me and they do beer pickups.

Have a good NBS, thanks for @JackHorzempa for today's start up. I thought about doing it, but waited instead. Just been playing video games all week as usual, been reviewing new beers gradually and never will get back to the amount I was doing previously. Should have a handle on a temp job to get some money coming in as the pandemic won't just bring things back to normal, we all know it. Just want to get my bottle and can returns back soon. We are supposed to get the lockdown lifted at the end of the week.

Anchorage Greed. Incredible TIPA. Lasting rocky head retention/thick foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of huge mandarin orange juice, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, guava, red apple, currant, red berries, red grape/wine, citrus peel/zest, wood, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate honey, wheat, white bread dough, light toast/biscuit malt sweetness; and herbal/floral/grassy hop earthiness. Mild pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Slight yeasty tang/tartness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; very creamy/silky/bready malts, light slickness, sticky hops, and resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing resin dryness, no hop astringency. Very smooth/soft, minimal warming 8.4%, or lingerintg hop burn after the finish. Fantastic southern passion, ekuanot, enigma, vic secret, and simcoe profile. Extremely juicy, vibrant, and lightly dank/earthy hops; with a large sized honey and wheat/oat/malt backbone. Light residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. Another amazing hazy DIPA from them as always! 4.28

Have you had any of the previous versions of Austere Modular like those I described in my above post? They used some 'unusual' hops to brew those previous iterations.

    Cheers!

Good morning New BSers! Thanks, @JackHorzempa, for starting this thread with one of your usual brilliant and insightful reviews! It makes me wish that I liked lagers/pilsners so I could hope to enjoy this brew - maybe someday.
For me, today's New Breakfast Beer/New Beer Sunday entry is one of my favorite styles - an American barleywine. Grabbing brews from the internet can be both expensive (you pay a premium for the beer + shipping + age can be a factor + scheduling delivery + (sometimes) state and local tax) which can make the cost prohibitive. However, this must be balanced against the ability to get beers that you can't get where you live/buy. Over the years I've found that Gigantic's Massive series are generally worth the cost and hassle, but then I REALLY like barleywines! If you want to gild the lilly by adding rye in some form, be it in the malt bill or in barrel aging, well then, take my money! So we come to today's New Beer Sunday Breakfast Beer:

$ 21.39 (Including shipping)/500 mL bottle ($ 1.27/oz). Received 5/5/20 from Craft Shack, San Diego, CA. Reviewed 5/10/20.

Printed on the neck in Lilliputian letters and black ink “Awesome After 10/28/20 Figue 19” – I literally needed a magnifying glass to read it. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 60 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
    Appearance – 3.5.
First pour – Between medium and deep amber (SRM 12-15), murky.
Body – Between deep amber and amber brown (SRM 15 - 18), murky. No advertised ruby color is initially present, just muddy brown. As the temperature reaches 60, the ruby color begins to appear. When held to direct light, the same but now slight effervescence can be seen.
Head – Average (Maximum three cm, aggressive center pour), khaki, high density with many medium rocks, short retention, diminishing to a three mm regular crown and no cap.
    Lacing – None.
Aroma – 4.25 – Predominately sweet toasted malt with a hint of rye on the backside, no hops, no yeastiness.
Flavor – 4.25 – Begins with a malty sweetness short of cloying mixed with a weaker rye pepperiness, no hops, no yeast. No alcohol (14 % ABV, as marked on the label) taste or aroma, but an instant gentle alimentary warming occurs, beginning in the stomach and creeping back up the esophagus to the soft palate. No diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3.75 – Full, silky, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 As with all Gigantic’s Massive! Bottles which I have consumed to date, this is a comfort beer best consumed under low light conditions while watching Joe Bob Briggs on Shudder. Delicious aroma and taste, good mouth feel. A bit expensive, but worth the price point.

    Rating 4.16, rDev -1.2%.

Damn good brew - gotta check Craftshack to see if I can get some more!

Southern Tier Nitro Hot Cocoa. This was insane! Lasting creamy/thick nitro head/lacing the whole glass. Aromas and flavors of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, marshmallow, vanilla, cream, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark bread/crust; with lighter notes of coffee, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light herbal, grassy, peppery, roast, charred bitterness on the finish. Light carbonation and fairly full body; very creamy, silky, velvety, bready malts; lightly slick, sticky, chalky roast in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering hop/roasted bitter dryness; no cloying/acrid/astringency. Dangerously smooth/soft/silky finish; minimal warming 10%. Amazing balanced rich malts, cocoa, chocolate, and marshmallow flavorings; solid earthy hops, and restrained fruity yeast. Light residual sweetness with lingering dryness. This is as close to hot chocolate as a beer as they could have possibly done. The Blackwater series always delivers. 4.43

Happy Mother’s Day! All our parents have been gone for a few years now...I think of my mom, and occasionally “see” her on her porch swing stringing beans, chatting away...the hurt fades, but the loss, and the joy/memories remain...

    Sierra Nevada’s “Barrel-Aged Narwhal”:

Canned 12/20/19. Poured at 57 degrees, one finger of fizzy, rocky dark tan cap sits atop black, with grey cola edges liquid; minimal cap retention; solid ring; sudsy lace and very thin legs on swirl. Nose is chocolate, bourbon, and char; roasted coffee beans as liquid warms. Bittersweet dark chocolate and bourbon upon entry; cocoa nibs, vanilla, oak, coconut, lite char, brisket burnt ends; no hops; coffee on backend. Smooth, creamy tongue coating; rich, full body; moderate minus carbonation; medium warmth from 11.9%; dry oaky finish. Overall a wonderful stout - full but not syrupy or adjuncty feeling; great blend of bourbon/oaky notes with the chocolaty base; tasty roast linger; bourbon is a fine compliment to this otherwise excellent RIS style beer.

Good morning NBS and thanks for the opening @JackHorzempa. I actually thought of you when purchasing this beer. It's a classic American lager brewed by Urban Chestnut in St. Louis named #6 in celebration of Stan Musial's 100th birthday. Stan's Hall of Fame career predates my knowledge of baseball, but this beer is timeless...
    The review:

16oz undated can (released in March) poured into a pilsner glass at fridge temp 4.5% ABV 11 IBU per brewery website. The beer pours bright light straw yellow with nearly white head. The head recedes to fluffy ring of big bubbles and leaves a little lacing. The aroma is slightly sweet, floral, grassy with pale malt being most noticeable. The taste is barely bitter, pale malt & rice dominant with a tiny presence of earthy hop. The mouthfeel is medium to thin bodied with average carbonation and a dry finish. Perfectly clean lagering with no trace of off flavors, feel or smell. Overall, a nearly perfect AAL.

The UC website lists 2-row & rice for the malt bill. Perle & Tradition hops were also listed on the website for ingredients. I've had the pleasure of sampling multiple Urban Chestnut lagers, with and without adjuncts, and they are always great.

Cheers all and enjoy the new beer in your glass today!

First new beer of the day, and it comes courtesy of @The_Kriek_Freak via a recent trade. He was kind enough to load me up with a ton of Lawson's cans; even when I lived in CT, and made multiple Hill Farmstead sojourns per year, Lawson's typically evaded me - except for the SOS and sessions brewed at Two Roads and distributed in CT.

    Maple Nipple

First off, I'm going to jump out ahead, and say that I am way above rDev on this one. Most red ales and ambers are fairly blah, but when I find a good one, it sticks out and delivers in a way that few other styles can.

This one is certainly not blah. It's a joy to drink. I'm halfway through, and it's not going to last much longer, because every sip is easy, goes down quick, and invites the next.

Reading through other reviews, they're kind of all over the place; I'm not sure if that's due to expectations and bias, or batch inconsistency, or simple differences among individual palates. For me, I found it superbly balanced, with a healthy dose of hops (pine, bark, citrus) to go with the heavy caramel malt base (8% ABV) and maple syrup addition. The maple is neither dominant nor an afterthought; it's just there, present and delicious.

This is a great beer, and I'm very glad to have two more on hand. I love having a good amber as a change up; when I don't want the over-the-top fruitiness and brightness of a modern IPA, and don't quite want the heaviness of a double-digit ABV imperial stout, and not feeling the acidity of a sour, a solid amber sits perfectly in that middle ground.

I could crush this one all day long.

Thanks for kicking things off today @JackHorzempa . Your kickoff featured one of the best beers I've seen, excellent picture! Several great reviews and tempting future purchases posted already entering mid-morning, this looks to be a prime New Beer Sunday!

Excited to hit up one of my favorite styles from "local" brewers (out in the burbs) for a couple pours today. I'm starting the morning with a 12 oz pour from Miskatonic Brewing in Darien, IL. Beautiful can art and colours remind me of UCLA's hardwood prowess based on John Wooden's pyramid Papa Sam Gilbert's cash.

Appearance: Clear golden pour, light carbonation throughout, bright white head leaves thin fine bubbly lacing. 4.0

    Aroma:
Floral, lemongrass, faint pine. Nice. 3.75

    Taste:

    Mouthfeel:
Dry and bitter, medium body, faint fizzy carbonation holds throughout the pour, bitter finish. 4.0

    Overall:
Solid WCIPA from a local brewer. Hope to find fresh cans at the next release. 4.0

Something Blanc is an IPA by Finback ( dry-hopped with Blanc).
This pale, yellow-orange brew is densely cloudy and hosts a pillowy foam cap. The aroma is light. A bit of fruit and pine are noted.
The flavor is rich with berry and melon. There is a slight resin bit. It is not overly sweet.
The mouthfeel is very smooth, almost thick (for an IPA). The hop bitterness is low to moderate and builds. This is quite enjoyable, but heavier-bodied than most of the style.

I can imagine this is a well brewed AAL beer. The co-owner & head brewer Florian Kuplent previous to opening Urban Chestnut was a brewer for Anheuser-Busch (from memory of my conversation with him first at Newark and then at St. Louis for a total of eight years of brewing there). Budweiser is not exactly a favorite of mine but there is no denying it is a high quality brewed beer. I am confident that Florian has the background experience to brew a high quality AAL at Urban Chestnut.

    Cheers!

Chant the Anthem a Farmhouse IPA from Twin Elephant. Farmhouse IPA is a made up style but it suits this brew well. The beer is 7.5 ABV. The grain bill is Barley Malts, Oats raw wheat and raw barley. The hops used are El Dorado, Galaxy and Nelson, A Saison yeast is used and spruce tips are an added flavor. Poured from a crowler into a Tulip it's a hazy gold color with a over your off white head. The aroma is only a bit funky and has hints of lemon, spruce, melon other fruits and malt. The taste is very complex malts, pine, fruit and only a bit of funk. It is very balanced and seems to change as it passes through your mouth. The mouthfeel is full and the finish is dry and lingering. This beer is refreshing and very enjoyable. An excellent brew.
I also had TE version of All Together last week that was a nice brew. Just a basic Pale Ale but a nice one.
