Evening all! Back with something a bit fun for the evening. We've had a few new locally brewed maibocks get canned recently - all are new to me, so I decided to crack them all together and try them side by side.

From L to R we have Dovetail Maibock, Pipeworks (PW) Tip-Top maibock, and Off Color Town Musicians.

The first thing noticeable here is the range of colors - Dovetail and PW are much lighter while the Off Color maibock is dark almost auburn in color.

The Dovetail maibock has aromas of sweet bready malts. I'm getting a hint of lightly smoked malts, some light lager yeast notes and a touch of earthy hops. Taste follows the nose with sweet, rich bready malts up front. I can't shake that hint of smoked malts as it peeps through in the flavor profile. There is a distinct yeasty character to the bread-y malts. Some light earthy hops on the back end, but the malts are the star here. Feel is medium bodied, chewy, and clean. Bright, brisk carbonation. Overall this is a really good beer - super enjoyable to drink. The smoked malt thing is a bit odd for the style, but otherwise its a really well crafted traditional example of the style.

The PW aroma is quite subdued, but there it is mostly notes of sweet bread and grain. The flavor profile has some rich sweet notes, a very spicy yeast notes with some earthy hops on the back end. The malty sweetness is really balanced with that spiciness that the yeast brings. Feel is light, it lacks that nice rich chewiness I normally get from this style. It is clean, crisp and bright with a nice bright carbonation. This one is also good! Enjoyable to drink and a decent example of the style.

Finally, we've got the Off Color maibock. The aroma has some strong grainy notes with some nuttiness and a bit of earthy vegetation. Definitely a different aroma than the other two. Reminds me more of a American brewed Vienna lager ... Taste has rich sweet malts, with notes of bread and some light grainy notes. The Vienna malt is really prominent in this one. the lager yeast comes through with a touch of spiciness. There is a touch of hops in this one, but in a very complimentary role. The feel is light to medium bodied, crisp with spritzy carbonation. Has a rather dry finish. I can't help but feel like this one came across mostly as a souped up Vienna lager.

Takeaways? The Dovetail maibock was the clear winner here and frankly its one of their better offering. I could drink that one by the liter. Its nice to see this style get some local love.

Tonight's new-to-me beer is a gin-barrel-aged version of I've Been Thinking About A Martini For The Last Two Beers , from Talking Cursive Brewing Company.
(No, it's not from Evil Twin .)
Label photo below. Describing it might take longer than drinking it .

    Now to drink it :

    L
: Slightly hazy , medium gold (lighter, & hazier than photo shows) , with a pretty good head*, especially for a gose.
    (*+.25 , for the head)

    S
: Gin, first of all, but not overwhelmingly so. Then the "fresh breeze" gose smell, a little sour, some woody barrel notes, and a touch of grape. At times, briefly, they combine for a dry white wine aroma. As it warms (almost gone ) I get a slight smell of sweetened strawberry** juice, as in what's left when the strawberry shortcake is gone.

**After I was done with the review, I looked into the 3 hops unfamiliar to me, wondering about the lime flavor. Turns out that Barbe Rouge can impart current or strawberry.:sunglasses:

    T
: Gin, grape, wood, at first, then some lime comes in late, and lingers. Slight spiciness,as with some rye beers, but less pronounced than that usually is. (Coriander?) Light sourness, with a barely-there bread crust flavor coming in as the sour fades. Light bitterness.

F: Feel is light, but more substance than a typical gose. Given the BA treatment & higher abv, that isn't surprising. Light-medium carbonation, that is soft initially, then lightly prickly.

O: Really like this one. First beer for me from Talking Cursive, & encourages me to try their other stuff. Probably helps if you like gin, but maybe not necessary . On a strength-of-gin-flavor scale, if straight gin is a 10, this is 3-3.5 at most. Nicely balanced, with gin & lime being the most prominent flavors, but with neither overwhelming the rest .
The whole is greater than the sum of the individual parts.

    Hello Late Night NBS
Well I got a nice surprise box from @Pinz412 in the continuing chaos of our NBS BIF #11.
A fine IPA, just note sure if it is intended to be an NEIPA or straight forward American IPA. Never the less, a tasty brew.

400 IPA from Four Points Brewing, Charleroi, PA.

Slightly peachy in color, moderately hazy, with a fluffy white head that pushes more than 2 fingers high. Reduces after a minute or so to a firm finger. Great retention, some lacing sticks with a patchy pattern.
Aroma jumps off with lemon zest, wet grain, grass, and some tropical notes of pineapple and mango.
Flavor pushes past the nose with a grain driven delivery of the bright citrus and tropical blend. Finishes with a slight onion kiss.
Mouthfeel is smooth, a bit fluffy, with a slight warming bitterness on the finish.
Overall, a solid IPA. Kind of walks along the line of an NEIPA, but I am not sure, so listed it as American IPA.

I agree. It's going to be an interesting, and cautious year and a half or so.
