I gotta look at the one bottle of cantillon I have. It has literally never occurred to me that wheat was in the mix but I can totally see it now

Lambic should contain 30-40% wheat in the grain bill, or it isn't really lambic. This is why Cantillon does not call Iris a lambic, as they brew it with 100% pale malt, no wheat.

And yet it is ranked as the #3 Belgian Lambic on this site. Maybe we shouldn't get too technical here so that we can leave that mistake as-is.

Not suggesting to change it's classification on here, just pointing out that the use of 30-40% wheat is the standard for lambic beers. I can't think of any Lambic that doesn't have wheat.

Hah. I'd wager to say $15-25 a bottle, but depends on what you're drinking I guess.

Interesting, I always thought Gueze was pronounced “Geeze”. Like Geezer without the R on the end. I’ll just stick to mispronouncing it, hasn’t been a communication issue this far into my beer journey. Even though I’ve know how Gose is pronounced, I still stick with “Goes” in conversations. Hose with a G in place of H. Never had any condensending remarks in 10 years, beer people are friendly.

You're either getting raked on your gose purchases or getting a great deal on your gueze

So I saw lindemans gauze for 7.99 a bottle this weekend. I also saw a local fruited gose selling $16 a 4 pack. That's a 4 dollar difference fellas.

    7.99 for a 375mL or 750mL? That's a great price if the latter.

That being said... Tilquin a la'Ancienne & Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze are about $14 for a 375mL. Cantillon is cheaper / more expensive, if you can find it. (I got Cantillon Geuze once at a grocery store for $20/750mL, and once for $20/375mL at a restaurant.)

Yes, IIRC Hieronymus' book "Brewing with Wheat" touches on this.
I guessing that there was some sort of tart wheat beer that the various tribes across that swath brewed, and it all settled into some regional specialties over the years, with wheat and acid being the common denominator.
Not something that can be proven or disproven, but a good guess.

Store and restaurant/bar prices are not equal. You're not paying for the same thing.

Beer people are friendly... and oftentimes wrong about the thing that matters a lot to them... and sometimes totally fine with continuing to misrepresent things even after they know that they are doing so.:wink:
(Damn, did I just ruin that 10 year streak?)

I know, but it's hard to say that Cantillon is "cheap" because in general... you can't find it. One could get a false impression that Cantillon is a hair more expensive than shelf turd gueuzes. I mean, technically, it is. It's just not found on shelves.

Cantillion and 3F are hard to find. And I can't say that I'm not guilty on spending too much on a bottle of Cantillion (got a 4yo botttle in the basement). But...
At a certain point you pay for the chase on these things. Are you ok with just picking up a bottle of Tilquin off the shelf, or do you need a bottle of Cantillion or 3F? And can you tell the difference?

I'd bet that most of the folks driving up the prices in the US are tickers or homebrewers looking to use dregs.

There are a ton of folks doing a similar thing to what those dudes in Belgium here in the US. If you're going to spend too much on beer, why not do it here?

You just cracked free a great beer and food memory. Many years ago in a nice restaurant in Akron, Ohio I had a Leipziger Gose with a beautiful cut of baked cod. It was a perfect combo recommended by the owner.

Lol, no I figured you jump all over my stubbornness with the pronunciations. That’s what makes the forum fun! Overall I think Gueze is my favorite beer style so perhaps I should show it more respect and pronounce the style properly. My 2021 beer goal!
