They started with rip-off of food, it was a matter of time they did with alcohol and beer too. Where there’s money to make, you know...

Their almond chicken salad is great, but I've never been impressed with the beer. Very good prices, but not as good quality as their big brother Trader Joe's(though the house beer at TJs is mostly bad outside of seasonals).

It’s done all the time in many products. Just look around at any supermarket.

    Enjoy

Yeah. Articles I'm seeing point to a lot of food brand ripoffs with some lawsuits. My guess is that they're about to get one for beer. :grimacing:

Broegel Bock is a Shiner knock off

    Holland Beer is their Heineken:

And I think Boot Tread is supposed to be a Fat Tire type of beer:

I wonder who is brewing this for them.

Looks like it and other Aldi brews are brewed by Octopi brewing in WI, which is contract/branding focused. The owner of Octopi is also a co-owner of Untitled Art with Levi Funk. The owner of Octopi was previously co-owner of 5 Rabbit in Chicago, before being booted amid a slew of lawsuits.

They are really all knock offs. They have a wheat beer with orange that is similar to a Blue Moon label and has blue in the name. Their Irish stuff looks like O'Sheas labels.

Where canI get a Dr. Perky can?

Maybe DFH brews this? It would get their beer to more people and it’s not uncommon in the food world. Many “off” brands are the same as what’s in the major brand can/box.

Could be a good way to grow even more.

    Enjoy

In the case of the O'Shea's beers - they look like knockoff O'Hara's beers, but in fact they are brewed by Carlows (which owns the O'Hara and O'Shea labels) so in that case its just a discount label brewed by the same brewery as the one they are "knocking off"

Also, the O'Shea's Irish dry stout is actually very good.

Well, how many knock-offs of ground-breakers in the industry are there? Couldn't Sierra Nevada pretty much take a stand and say that every American Pale Ale is a rip-off of theirs? Or even West Coast IPA as a rip-off of Celebration? Or American Barleywine a rip-off of Bigfoot? And really they started the whole American Stout thing, and along with Anchor, revived porter.

Isn't every Vienna Lager a rip-off of Dreher? Aren't all Pilsners a rip-off of Urquell?

Those in the know can tell the difference, and if these Aldi rip-offs get folks enough into beer to check out the wider world, it's ok by me.

When living in Austria, at Hofer (ALDI with a different name, same brand and concept), they had a knock-off of Ottakringer Helles called Kühles Bier. Somehow I always figured Ottakringer just made it for them.

I actually used to prefer Dr. Thunder to Dr. Pepper.

Really and truly, aren't all colas a rip-off of Coca-Cola?
