Stone appears to be claiming ownership of the word stone, even when part of a compound word and even when used by a non beer company, that is different than asserting ownership of your packaging and label design. Many people were/are supportive of Stone's suit against keystone for emphasizing the word stone on their beet packaging

Yeah, Zobelein's brewery was going by the name Los Angeles Brewing Co. in the post-Repeal era. Pabst bought it in '48, operating it as a wholly-owned subsidiary apparently until the early '50s when it became a Pabst brewery and began brewing Pabst Blue Ribbon.

A couple of screen shots from the film show that Brown Derby by then was coming of LABC (nice sideway's EASTSIDE case in the second pic):

Previously Brown Derby had been brewed in Humboldt (below).

Yeah, but who mentioned Acme?

After Hamm closed their breweries and left California (when the company was sold to Olympia) the Burgermeister brand wound up in Pabst's portfolio. Hamm in L.A. had been operating the former Acme brewery (which they bought from Liebmann/Rheingold) but in S.F. Hamm operated the old Rainier plant.

As noted in the linked history, the Acme brand itself did survive, owned by a distributor and contract-brewed by General and then Blitz-Weinhard (the brewer of the Acme I used to buy in L.A., IIRC the only B-W beer in the area, that would have been pre-Henry Weinhard brand). And it's still around, brewed by North Coast.

General sold their Azusa brewery to Miller in '66 - Kalmanovitz didn't gain control of General until 1971, when he bought out Labatt's share (47%) giving him about 2/3 of the stock. According to at least one source, the Maier brewery in Los Angeles (500 E. Commercial St) then became a General brewery.

But, yeah, as he would with his subsequent purchases (Falstaff, Pearl and Pabst), each of his brewing companies often continued to brew many of the brands he'd collected along the way. That's how Ballantine Ale wound up a Pabst-owned label...:grimacing:

Wow 1933 is by far the earliest reference I've seen to a Humboldt brewing company. Do you know of that is the same company that became just Humboldt Brewing? I believe that brand is currently being produced out of Paso Robles but I can't remember who bought it.

Their old building in Arcata (not sure where their facility in eureka was) is currently a beer bar

Yeah, I wondered about that, too. Don't know the link between the two (if any) but reference sources have the earlier company starting in 1903 (in the former John U Haltinner's Eureka brewery) and closing in 1940.

Ya that sounds like they're different companies. I think the current Humboldt Brewing Co. advertised a founding date in the 90s. And I'm almost certain they were also always in Arcata.

I'm curious to know where the older brewery was based. There is still one older building that houses a brewery but I dont know the buildings history before the early 90s

Looking at the Humboldt brewing website, they were founded in 1987 in arcata, were brewed by Firestone Walker from 2000-2013, and since then have been owned by Total Beverage Solutions

Haven't seen their product in Humboldt county in many years

Yeah, but possibly the name was in tribute to the earlier brewery? (Pretty common these days but usually for a longer-lived and better known brewery/brand).

Have two addresses (pre-Pro and Post-Repeal):
    405 First St.
    3150 Broadway St.

Hmmm... interesting. pre-Pro, they were owned by the same family as Los Angeles Brewing Co.:
    H. H. Hilp was the owner after Repeal.

My guess is that its just because place names were popular with breweries of that era. The other 3 local breweries that were founded from 87-96 are named after the rivers they are near ( Mad River brewing and Eel River brewing) and the nearby national forest (Six Rivers brewing).

As to the addresses, the brewery I'm thinking of is on west 3rd so its not that. The two you listed are currently a gym (1st st) and a strip mall (Broadway). The gym always reminded me of an old lumber mill building, but I imagine a brewery of that era would have been similar. The strip mall is definitely newer construction as that whole area was built up around the main train depot and was redeveloped after they stopped running trains through here

as a brief sidenote, Aldi sells some very good and very inexpensive authentic Bavarian bratwursts under theie Duetsche Kuche brand. They go great with any beer and are great to have around if you are supporting any Bavarian fuss ball sides...just saying

Yeah I went today (did't have that radler or it would have been in my cart) and took some time when walking down the aisle to notice the packaging. It is uncanny the resemblance that is there to the true brand. They also throw you off by peppering in name brand products, every now and then I would go shit Froot Loops, and sure enough it is. There is just enough brand name mixed in to throw you off and make you think all is normal

Most food at aldi is literally another brand with a different label to sell for cheap at the store. As for the beer, it all depends on who is brewing it and what contracts they have.
