Good Sunday afternoon, New Beer Samplers and commentators. It's another gorgeous summer afternoon to drink some fine beer outside. NBW review #1 is a TIPA collaboration between Carton and Other Half, Dressed Just Like Dynamite. This is amazing! It's hopped with Mosaic, Sabro, and a hop called HBC 472. The latter two compliment each other and add an oaky vanilla cream to the bright citrus. I really enjoy learning about new (to me) hops. The grist includes Bohemian Pilsner, wheat, carahell, sauermalz, and flaked oats, all of which provide both sweetness and depth. And Carton's use of its Kolsch yeast is always welcome. I think it's also the most delicate triple I've had; you would never suspect this is 10%. While I expected a really fine beer from Carton and Other Half, this is just superb. Here's my full review:

    4.54/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.75 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

The name on the can is Dressed Just Like Dynamite. Canned on 8/13/2020. Poured into a Carton IPA glass. It pours a murky, pastel orange color with a creamy, bright white cap and thick, clinging lacing. The smell is quite floral with whiffs of citrus, pineapple, ripe melon, and oats. The taste opens with fresh fruit: pineapple, orange, lemon, and grapefruit. But it's quickly followed by sweetness from the grist, including the flaked oats and caramel and pilsner malts. There are also notes of wheat cracker at the finish. I'm not familiar with HBC 472 hops but they add a really plush oaky, vanilla-cream flavor. They nicely compliment the Sabro hops. And there is a pleasant spicy bitterness at the finish. This ale has a nice, full mouth feel with pleasant carbonation, and with all the flavor it's easy to miss the 10% ABV. Overall, this TIPA is a work of art by two of the finest brewers I know. It may be the most delicate triple I've ever had but the flavors are big and bold. This is well-conceived and superbly brewed.

This is my highest rating ever for a TIPA and I'm hoping I didn't sell it short.

    Cheers, NBW!

Well, back again, even if I wasn't expecting to be back.
I had thought all I had left for new beers were super high ABV beers, in big bottles. Well, I did find one in my fridge that wasn't super high alcohol, so here it is.

From Eponymous Brewing in Brookings, South Dakota - Recompense. It is a barrel aged sour red ale with cherries. 6.8% ABV.

This is one hell of a cherry bomb. Tart as heck, and sour also. Just the faintest hint of sweetness to mellow it out.

It is really good. So happy I got 2 bottles of it to enjoy.

    Review:

    look: 4 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.25

Pours a nice dark copper color. There's minimal head when poured from the bottle, though what was there was off white, and didn't last too long. There's no lacing on the glass.
The nose is a very strong, and very tart cherry aroma. It's dank, wild and tart. The aroma just hits your nose and doesn't let go in a pleasing way.
Taste - Like the nose suggests, it's a very tart cherry flavor. There's just the faintest hint of sweetness, but so faint. Tart and sour are the flavors here.
The body is full, and thick. The tartness just lingers in my throat, and takes a long time to go away.
A sold beer of this style. Delicious.

Ok, I can't see myself doing any more new reviews this weekend. I might be headed to Iowa next Sunday. If so, I'll see you then.

I'm enjoying another hot, beautiful day. I may take the kids to the pool later when it cools off a bit. I'm still enjoying beers from @oach. I made a quick trip to East Sixth Brewing today to grab some beers to send him back and a few for the NBS BIF #12.

This beer pours a dark, thick maroon color with a very fast, fizzy head. The lacing looks like leftover fruit pieces from a smoothie. The beer looks amazing. It's like thick fruit juice.

The smell slams you in the face with maple syrup, which is odd given how this looks. A deeper breath reveals blackberry underneath. In the words of my wife - that smells like a pancake.

The taste is a bit tart at first but then hits you with maple syrup and blackberry. They blend nicely on the finish making a sweet, tart, fruity mix that's really good. There's no hint of the 8% ABV.

The mouthfeel is very thick but with a medium fizzy feel. The maple lingers through the finish.

Overall, this is delicious. It was successful in going for a blackberry pancake flavor.

Initial pour throws up a solid froth. Nearly 3 fingers of head slowly settles to a fairly solid 1/4 inch cover with a clumpy ring. Great retention plentiful lacing.
Nose begins with orange rind, slightly pithy grapefruit, wet grass, some pine resin followed by an herbaceous note that wafts between shallots and tulip bulbs.
Flavor is more subdued. A dry earthy bitterness begins, carrying subtle notes of pine sap and grapefruit rind. Buckwheat grain notes peek in before it tapers off to finish mildly bitter.
Mouthfeel is medium to light. Carbonation is constant but not overstated.Mild dry bitterness in the end.
Overall, a solid IPA. Nothing overwhelming, but quite good.

Afternoon all! I've been trying to continue supporting local breweries as they are still suffering the economic effects of the pandemic and any little bit helps. So, my next new beer is a new beer from local brewery Kinslahger - their Raspberry Dark Wheat.
Pours a dark ruddy brown color. Opaque and somewhat "chunky" for lack of better term. There is clearly fresh fruit in this beer as opposed to just fruit flavoring. Thick pillowy pink-tinged off-white head collapses steadily leaving just a thin layer of foam on top of the beer. Lots of sticky lacing coats the glass as the beer is consumed. Aroma is unbelievably delicious and kind of a surprise given what I was anticipating. Its dominated by fresh raspberry puree and preserves. But kind of coating that aroma is a dry cocoa and dark chocolate aroma that gives you this lovely chocolate raspberry theme. The depth and brightness of the aroma is somewhat surprising for a 4.5% beer.

The taste is more along the lines of what I expected for this beer. There are light notes of raspberries, not sweet - fresh, with some wheat malt notes providing a nice backbone with some light cocoa notes. Overall the flavors are quite light and mild. Nothing is particularly strong or assertive in the profile. Feel is light, smooth, almost creamy. Bright carbonation. drier finish.

Overall a nice beer. I do not mean this as a knock, but this beer reminds me so much of the kind of craft beer you'd get on tap at a place 10 or 15 years ago - an easy drinking, fruited wheat ale.

Today has been a nice easy-going day. Spent some time in the garden and had a hell of a haul of pepper ... red bell, paprika, nandepeño, and Ausilio (and a few tomatoes).

Pinot Gris, a Fruit Lambic brewed with white grapes by Belgian brewery Tilquin (8.4% ABV).

Pours a cloudy, golden amber coloration with a small, fluffy, lasting head. Smells of doughy malt and vibrant white grape notes, with some fruity esters of apricot and gooseberry also coming through, as well as hints of blue cheese funk and oak.

Taste is an excellent balance of doughy malt, a distinct, sour white grape presence, some fruity esters, with apricot standing out particularly, lighter pear and gooseberry, straw and some blue cheese funk and musty oak, with a good, underlying acidity. Finishes semi-dry, with a medium tartness and some white grape, apricot and funk lingering in the aftertaste. Velvety mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

An excellent lambic with a superb harmony of vibrant fruity, funky and woody notes that are all rather distinct, yet form a subtle balance of flavors with an impressive underlying complexity. This starts out a little sweet from the rich malt and fruity esters, but the sourness from the grapes and bacterial, citric acidity serve as the perfect counterpoint, while it mellows out in the semi-dry finish. The interplay of the white grapes and fruity esters is quite lovely as well, giving a vibrant, fresh vibe to this that is reminiscent of white wine along with the musty, woody oak presence, while the rich, leathery, cheesy funk makes this feel truly special. Afternoon All. Been too long and I guess Its NBW now. Probably will stick to Sundays but great opportunity for others to join in I guess.
Well my time in Maine has for now at least come to an end. Pretty happy to be home now. Brought back some goodies on a few trips and heres one from a brewery that is not really known for their IPAs. They are known for wild ales, sours and unusual takes on styles.
    Barreled Souls PREREQUISITE DIPA
Pours a dirty burnished gold with a marshmallow like foamy head that stands tall and lasts for quite a few minutes settling to a thin cap with spotty, sticky lacing.
Smell is muted tangerine, pineapple cantelope, and some minty/herbal qualities. Nothing out of the ordinary here and Im finding it a bit muted?
Taste follows with orange/tangerine, grapefruit, dank pineapple, some mango and a spicy peppery note.
Feel is soft up front, fruity rounded middle and a pretty bitter spicy finish.
Looks like a NEIPA but finishes like a WC IPA. Very little hint of alcohol.
This beer is ok. Its a bit of a letdown as I guess I was expecting something a little different. Nothing really stands out and except for the bitterness it kind of sits in the middle of the pack of NEIPAs for me. I do have another lined up though. Cheers![IMG]

We got some in Boston a year or so back. Like most exclusive fruited Lambic releases though it was very limited. There is only 6 in a case too so when a store gets a case or two, it isn't much for the demand. Usually a huge markup too, I think here it was around $40 for the 750ml at Fort Point Market. I didn't get that one, but I did land the Pinot Noir Tilquin which I thought was phenomenal.

Bière Darbyste, a Saison brewed with fig juice by Belgian brewery Brasserie de Blaugies (5.8% ABV).

Pours a cloudy, almost hazy, golden amber coloration with a small, frothy head. Smells of doughy malt and faint esetry yeast accents, as well as a subtle, sweet fig aroma.

Taste is a decent balance of quite doughy malt, some light fruity and spicy yeast esters, with hints of green apple and clove, grassy hay, a certain fig sweetness and a rather light, underlying tartness. Finishes with a light tartness and some green apple and grassy hay lingering in the aftertaste. Velvety mouthfeel with a light/medium body and carbonation.

While the fig juice is still rather noticeable in the nose, it is much less pronounced on the tongue, adding more of a general sweetness than a distinct fig flavor that somewhat overshadows the delicate yeast esters here, preventing them from coming into full bloom, especially in combination with the rich malt as well.

While it never turns quite syrupy sweet thanks to a subtle tartness, this still feels a little one-dimensional and lacking in those vibrant yeast esters that I expect from the style. It's still a nice Saison, just a too sweet and kind of poorly balanced, while also suffering from a somewhat light and slightly watery body, although surprisingly still managing a nice, velvety mouthfeel.

Agree with you on supporting locals. Especially with the NBS BIF #12 coming up!
I just picked up a few cans from Chapman Crafted. And this one is Mmmmm, Mmmm Good.

    Mrs. Mocha American Imperial Stout
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/45678/489404/
Deep brown, almost black. Fluffy mocha colored head has a milky foam that pushes 2 fingers and recedes to a very respectable finger high head of milk stout consistency.
Aromas are very inviting. Sweet and toasty, cinnamon-tinged, fruity coffee roast that eventually becomes deeper. A creamy sweetness peeks in at times.
The flavor is full and round. Coffee roast that gives way to a cinnamon note that reminds me of snickerdoodle cookies. There is a lot going on here, but definitely lives up to its name.
Mouthfeel medium to almost full. Gentle carbonation.
Overall, I love this one. And I hope my NBS BIF #12 target likes coffee leaning imperial stouts.

NBW #2. Twin Elephant's Intergalactic Kegger. One of Twin Elephant's quirks is that it recycles names of beers. It also tends to rework recipes. I first reviewed the beer of this name in March 2018 and had it on draught at the brewery. It was 6.3% ABV and hopped with Enigma and Vic Secret. This is a very different beer so I don't feel I'm cheating. It's hopped with Galaxy, Enigma, Sabro, and Nelson Sauvin and it's 7% ABV. I believe it's the first time it's been canned.

A totally opaque, pale yellow pour with a thin, milk-white head and lacing. On the nose there is bitter lemon, tangerine, and grapefruit, along with malted oat sweetness and a whiff of coconut. The taste is mellow with a good balance with citrus and sweetness from the grist. You can taste the addition of the Nelson and Enigma hops with a distinct white wine grape and the barley from the Maris Otter malt. It's very clean and not overly bitter. It has a thick, creamy mouthfeel with pleasant carbonation, and at 7% ABV it's very drinkable. It's also very crisp and clean. My wife enjoyed it, as well.

    Cheers, NBW!

A shout-out to @nc41 for todays tick, Worlds Fair Beer. Brewed to celebrate the 1982 WF in Knoxville. It's ugly, a dirty brown color, stunk, rotten apple/vinegar, but was benign on the palate, and had great carb all the way through the glass.

Maine beer #2 from a brewery that has let me down a few times. This one is a surprise.
    Baxter Brewing Gopher It TIPA
Pours a hazy orange/gold with a seafoam bubble head of a finger that settles rather quickly to a thin ring.
Aroma is overripe pineapple, guava, melon, apricot, orange and earthy, damp mushroomy, piney soil.
Taste follows with loads of ripe tropical fruits, sweet orange, some dank Mary Jane, dried candied apricot, and a touch of onion/garlic. This is really tasty.
Feel is medium bodied with a soft feel upfront and a piney grapefruit pith bitterness that really balances this out. Layers of flavors linger on the palate.
The Vermont yeast really brings a distinct earthy but easy drinking quality to this. 8.8% and not noticeable. Almost quenching. Really great take on what they call a Triple. For me a triple is 10% or above. Anyway this is easily the best beer Ive had from Baxter I can remember and one of the best Triples Ive had recently. Really nice job. Check it out if youre into this style.

Aardnon / Earthnun, a blend of 1/3 Oude Bruin and 2/3 Quadruple aged in red wine barrels for 7 years by Belgian brewery De Struise (8% ABV).

Pours a dark mahogany coloration with a tiny, fizzy head. Smells of bready, caramel malt and strong dark/red fruit notes of raisin, plum and cherry, as well as hints of vanilla and tannic oak.

Taste is an excellent balance of rich, sweet, bready, caramel malt and distinct dark and lighter red fruit, with raisin and plum being especially prominent and lighter fig and cherry, as well as some brown sugar and rather pronounced sour, vinous, tannic and woody oak notes, with hints of balsamic vinegar, chocolate, vanilla and clove. Finishes with a medium sourness and some dark fruit and tannic oak lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and low carbonation.

This one-of-a-kind brew makes for a very unique, drinking experience due to its incredibly rich and complex, yet sublimely balanced flavor profile that combines the sweet, fruity and somewhat spicy notes of a Quadrupel with the sour, vinous and woody notes of an Oud Bruin and while all of these notes stand out luxuriously, they never get into each other's way, really coming into their own without overshadowing one another. A truly superb brew where you can really taste the 7 years of aging in wooden barrels and additional 4 years of secondary fermentation in the bottle, while this never feels overly oxidized, syrupy sweet or too boozy.
