Cheers to NBW! New brewery to me and new beer...

Caught my eye because it’s not often you see WC inspired hoppy sticker cans.

Pours almost crystal clear, head disappeared not long after the picture. Has a nice fruity smell to it, melon and berry. Taste follows very similar, but it has some pineapple flavor bite to it as well, I perceive zero bitterness. There is also something strange I can’t put my finger on but that may be more mouthfeel. It’s dry but something else is strange about mouthfeel, not horrible but I keep noticing it so it takes away from the beer a little bit. Overall it’s tasty but I would say the only thing WC about it is the clarity of the beer. If you smelled it or drank it blind you would guess it were hazy. Which I guess is actually a good accomplishment if that’s what the brewer was going for. I’d call this a clear hazy pale ale though.

I will never drink that beer below 53.5 F. Just me. And just busting your balls. A very nice review! Cheers.

Surprised to see that you got this... and surprised to be seeing it at this point. I'm gonna take a guess here: There's a good chance you would have liked it better when fresh (even if just a little better), BUT there's also a good chance you would have still found it lacking anyway. I like Kräuterlikör. I had the beer when it came out and I really did not care for it due to it's lack of balance (in my eyes). For me, it was dominated by fennel.

I was quite surprised to come across this after all this time myself and will absolutely agree that it is overly dominated by fennel, and to a lesser degree star anise, with a somewhat poor balance unfortunately. In fact my enjoyment of it dimished the longer I drank it. Certainly the worst Arrogant Bastard variant I've ever had, to be honest. Not that I'm a huge fan of Jägermeister in the first place, but I do usually quite enjoy Herb/Spice Beers.

Yes, without specific knowledge of the specific Brett strain/fermentation conditions and also the specific hopping schedule no way of really knowing. But, if you enjoy drinking the beer does it really actually matter all that much? The brewer made certain decisions and if the resulting beer is a 'win' for your palate then "life is good".
Very much subjective and a matter of personal preference. I have yet to have an IPA solely brewed with Brett (including my homebrewed beers) so I will personally reserve absolute judgement here.

But based upon the beers I have homebrewed with Brett I do have to say I am a fan of those beers. Since I purposely pitched the Brett is "wild ales" the appropriate way to characterize my beers? Maybe not?

    Cheers!

Another new German beer for me on this New Beer Weekend. It's the season! Spaten Optimator - a wonderful doppelbock. Poured from fridge temp. Pours dark brown with little head. Very malty nose. Lots of dark fruit - prunes, figs, raisins. Caramel, bread, and a bit of spice. Really enjoyable. The taste matches the nose. A rustic sweetness upfront. Almost grainy. Raisins, figs, toffee, big malts, candy, and cherries. So smooth! Mouthfeel is medium bodied with lots of wonderful aftertaste. This is just a fantastic doppelbock - checks every box for me. Cheers!

I saw this beer on the floor yesterday, but I was already latched onto a Heist IPA. The abv at 6.7 and it’s pushing ipa level, does the high abv for the style detract from the beer itself?

2016 Trip In The Woods Ginger Bigfoot

    3.91/5 rDev +1%
    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.75

Welp this was a disappointment. At some point in the past, probably last year, I had a chance to snag one of the regular Trip in the Woods, didn't do it and it was gone forever. So when I saw one of these in a bottle shop, 2016 vintage, I grabbed it so quickly I didn't notice the ginger caveat. To be honest I'd have surely grabbed it anyway but I'd have not been so surprised as I was tonight as I was about to enjoy this on an end of the summer cool weekend evening as my attic becomes habitable for listening to music, reading and drinking beer.

Poured into a DFH tulip a small tan head quickly dissipated over a dark brownish amber body. Smell was nicely complex of candied fruits over barrel, booze and malts. It's in the taste that the ginger dominates. When it was cold out of the cellar fridge it was "whoa that's too much ginger" but as it warms it somewhat fades but it's still prominently there. There's still the traditional Bigfoot hop bite in the taste but the barrel and bourbon fade way into the background. Mouthfeel is standard Bigfoot so no surprise there.

If I hadn't tried this I'd be kicking myself so I think this will ultimately be a historical curio that I participated in the experiment.

I agree, the only problem here is the brewery sells the IPA in a pack that is cheaper per oz, and with the brett fermentation, now it is a single bottle that is double the price. It's part of the style and brett/wild/sours are or at least were sort of in a higher price bracket so I don't mind and I knew what I was paying for, and it wasn't too expensive I think the bottles are around $7-8. It just doesn't seem justified to me if the brett isn't adding much character to the beer. It's sort of like Stone's Enjoy After Brett IPA that was a single 750ml and more than double the price per oz. At least they told you to wait to get the brett results desired that makes the beer unique, not drink fresh so it tastes more like pineapple. As long as the beer is good though I guess it doesn't matter.

On here at least we have a whole category called Brett Beer. I suppose you could use wild ale if you thought that's what the result was, or just Brett IPA if it's brewed like an IPA with brett. It might be better to say it's more than just an IPA if it's brewed with brett though, depending on the character I suppose. If it tastes like an IPA then is it just an IPA? Any style of beer can have brett in it, though it may not show much funk or tartness for a little while depending.

    Dale,

FWIW I did not perceive anything in this beer that 'says' 6.7% ABV. There was absolutely zero 'hotness' to this beer or any other qualities that would indicate this level of ABV.

    Cheers!

Evening all. I had a crowler of the lemon radler from Kinslahger while making dinner and cleaning up after it.

Its a really nice radler - they actually make their own lemon (and grapefruit soda) for their radlers.

Aroma kind of goes across like a hopped up lemon soda - which kind of makes sense as they use their pilsner for the beer base. Taste is essentially the same - you get that hop character from the pilsner with a mild bitter bite on the back end. The lemon soda is not really sweet - reminds me more of a Italian lemon soda. That helps keep the radler from being too sweet and fruit like. Its crips, effervescent and super carbonated. Overall its a nice radler - and if I was going to drink one, this would be really good.

Heist Existence from a Distance. Hazy ipa, 6.1 abv using Sabro and Motuka Hops. 12 days old so it’s certainly fresh.

Hazy yep it is, you cant see a damn thing thru the glass. Nose is always tough for me because my sense of smell is compromised, but certainly the sweet fruit is strong. Pineapples, a bit of OJ, enough so I could see adding a splash of champagne to this beer. It certainly has enough bitter on the palate, it’s NOT astringent and annoying to drink, I could drink a few with no trouble at all. Not the kinda everyday beer I buy , but it’s a nice change from a Pils. $15.99 a 4 pk it’s within range, and I certainly like Heist beers, now I can get them without the hassle of driving to get them.

Before I get to my first reviews of the weekend, a last-second plug for the 12th iteration (well, 12.5 if you count the Christmas edition) of the NBS BIF. Sign up thread is here; please read the rules before applying.

Now, onto some new beers! My first three for the day come sans photos; I beg your forgiveness. Also, if you happen to be a participant in said BIF, perhaps pay attention.

Alom's Imperial Stout - Cigar City

Alom follows their by now established tradition of aging their beers on interesting wood staves. Last year they went with Amburana (including for Bamburana with Oskar Blues). For Alom, they took what is essentially Huna (imperial stout with chili peppers, cinnamon, cacao nibs, and vanilla) and aged it on Spanish cedar.

The result is fantastic. While I really enjoyed the Spanish cedar variant of Jai Alai, the wood definitely adds a huge, at times overpowering note; you have to really like what the wood brings, otherwise it's probably not going to work for you.

With Alom, the wood adds a deep, throaty maltiness, but otherwise blends superbly with everything else. It's super rich, with notes of chocolate, toast, light char, molasses, and vanilla. The finish brings a nice even blend of cinnamon and chili peppers, along with more wood and some boozy heat.

    This is a home run.

Madeira Barrel-Aged American Barleywine - Cigar City

I don't quite love how this one comes together. The wine barrel aging adds a pungent, earthy tone up front, and a sour, vinous note in the middle. It's quite hoppy; I didn't know it was American-style going into it, but it readily became apparent (to me). However, other than the wine accent, it's a fairly straightforward American Barleywine, with notes of caramel, grains, leather, bread, and bark.

It's not bad - it's really, really good, in fact. It's just not as harmonious as Alom, and I don't quite love the barrel influence. To be fair, I often find red wine barrel aging a stout doesn't have the effect I would like, and often ends up a slightly jarring experience.

    4.09 / +0.5%

    Charleywine Ale - Cigar City

Another barleywine, but worlds away from the above entry. Charleywine Ale is aged in French apple brandy barrels and rye whiskey barrels, and the resulting blend is fantastic.

It opens with a huge rich and boozy nose, featuring rye, whiskey, sherry, cherry, molasses, bark, tannins, caramel, chocolate, and apple brandy.

Smoother on the palate, but featuring similar tones, along with dark fruit and a heavier emphasis on chocolate. The apple brandy comes through deftly, adding to the overall mix without ever taking over - although if you're not a fan of brandy, it may still be an unwelcome guest for your palate.

A really wonderful beer, the kind I'd like to have two or three times as much to just sit and savor over a couple of hours. An absolute treat.

OK, back in my chair and with a beer (and a picture!) to review!

Just as I'm a sucker for Galaxy hops, my partner is a sucker for peanut butter (and pumpkin ales, which may be making an appearance in this thread tomorrow). I've also gotten her into Bomb!; she won't let me buy one bottle at a time. So this beer, then, was an absolute no-brainer:

Barrel-Aged Peanut Butter Bomb! - Prairie Artisan Ales

This beer is all about your expectations.

If you're expecting a peanut butter bomb (pun intended), you're probably going to be disappointed.

If you're expecting bourbon with a side of beer, you're probably going to be disappointed.

If, however, you're expecting an OG Bomb!, with some peanut butter accents and well-integrated bourbon, then you're probably going to be enormously pleased.

Coffee is really the star here. The chocolate is quite noticeable as well, and the chili peppers - finally! - add a nice vegetal note, although still very little, if any, heat. The bourbon is restrained; barely noticeable at first, although it does become a player as the beer warms.

Basically, all of the things that made Bomb! such a landmark beer are on display here, along with some peanut butter and bourbon. Yes, please!

I went in mostly expectation-free, and so I've been free to (slowly) enjoy this glass for what it is, and I've been both pleased and surprised. By rating, this one is just splitting hairs below Charleywine Ale and Alom's Imperial Stout from Cigar City (earlier).

Many thanks @jkblr for getting this rolling!

Getting ready to get 'warm' here in CA... Had plans for some home repair projects for the coming days, but forecasts of 109F will likely keep me inside instead.

Grabbed this 2 days ago while in Tahoe. Shoe Tree Brewing's West Coast Randy is not new to BA, but this will be its first review or rating since its addition.

Can of unknown age (though likely fairly fresh based on the establishment of purchase) into a tulip glass.

L: Dirty copper with 2+ fingers of eggshell white pillowy head with great retention and left substantial ringed/streaked lacing.

S: No wow factor here, herbal and grassy, pine hiding underneath. Some citrus as it warms.

T: More dynamic than the nose (which isn't saying much) and tracks the aroma profile well. Finishes with moderate bitterness that lingers pleasantly on the palate.

F: Low-medium bodied with mild carbonation, slick on the tongue, crisp ending.

O: Drinks very light for nearly 7% ABV, but incredibly forgettable. Nothing really stands out, but there's little deterrents also. Maybe this is older than I thought, but if this was my flagship IPA, I'd be trying to find something with more pop. Worth noting that's its listed on their website as a "Gluten Reduced" beer.

    BA Score = 3.85, rev = 0.0%
