[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Teku glass not sure when it was canned. Pours a very murky orange with a 2 finger sticky white head that leaves a bunch of thin lines of lace with solid retention. 4

Aroma is peach, mango, melon, apricot, and grapefruit rind. 3.75

Taste follows peach, mango, honeydew, apricot, and grapefruit. 3.75

Mouthfeel is bigger than medium, gentle carbonation but almost gritty, not dry or sticky, and at 6.8% it goes down easy enough. 4

Overall this one is pretty good, has a bit of a home brew thing going throughout. I expect better out of this brewery. Still worth a try. 3.75

Good day BAs! For the NBS portion of NBW, I'm off to an excellent start with my New Breakfast Beer:

Chinooker’d from Lawson’s Finest Liquids. Purchased 0n 4/1/21 for $ 5.00 (Including tax) for 16 oz can ($ 0.313/oz) from Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. In reefer at store and stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 24/1/21.
Stamped on the bottom “CANNED ON 11/18/20”. Served at 48.9 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 53.2 degrees.
    Appearance – 4.25.
First pour – Pale Straw (SRM 2), slight chill haze. Second pour is clear and produces 0.5 cm head.
Body – Straw (SRM 3), opaque. When rear-lite, opacity is shown to be due to extremely fine suspended particles and massive amounts of near-microscopic carbonation.
Head – Average (Maximum 3.2 cm, aggressive center pour), floral white, medium density, average retention, leaving a five to seven mm crown with a cross-cut saw blade edge, fed by effervescence, and a thin partial cap with many rocks. Inserting the thermometer causes an upwelling of tiny bubbles.
Lacing. Good. Wide band of tiny to small bubbles with an occasional hole, like torn cheesecloth.
Aroma – 4.5 – Burst of resinous pine when can opens, quickly weakens allowing some weak generic citrus to sneak through, no malt, no yeast.
Flavor – 4.5 – Begins with generic citrus and resinous conifers, no malt, no yeast, slightly bitter. No alcohol (6.5 % ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Ends with a mild but resinous bitterness, sans citrus and pine, but with some malt present.
Palate – 4 – Medium, almost watery, mouthful of soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 Nicely resinous and piney IPA, reminiscent of the pre-fruity days.
    Rating 4.39, rDev +2.8%.

Couple of new beers this weekend:

    Hammerheart Immigration
    [IMG]
    Appearance: Unfiltered brown, ok head.

Smell: Roasted malt, then smoke--sliced ham with a nice sweet note to it.

Taste: Mild sweetness, smoke flavor of caramelized ham, some roasted malt that almost goes to black coffee. Ash and smoke in the finish.

Overall: Hammerheart has another winner here with this amber/brown smoked lager. The alderwood smoke gives a distinct sweetness that oak or beechwood smoke does not. Nice roasted malt and coffee flavors. Excellent!

Surly Fourteen (my 1414th beer on BeerAdvocate.com)
    Appearance: Cloudy amber, ok head.

    Smell: Boozy, wood, caramel.

Taste: Sweet, big caramel note, vanilla from the barrel. Not overly sweet, at least a little balanced. Body feels lighter than expected for 11%, but still a weighty beer.

Overall: For my 1414th beer on Beeradvocate, here's Fourteen from Surly. A nice, if not overly complex, barleywine. Seems to lean a little more to the English style than the American style. A good beer, congrats on 14 years!

It seems to be a common theme with Cigar City, but Maduro goes from world class to second rate home brew over a period of a few months, even refrigerated. If you ever get a chance to have it less that a month old and kept cold, I'd give it another shot, especially if you generally enjoy the style. If you don't believe me, ask @vabeerguy.

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz tulip glass canned on 12/18/2020. Pours a hazy straw yellow with a finger sticky white head that leaves thick streaks of lace with solid retention. 4.25

Aroma is pineapple, passionfruit, lime, white grapes, apricot, melon, and some grapefruit rind. 4.5

Taste follows passionfruit, pineapple, cantaloupe, lime, honeydew, white grapes, and a little hint of grapefruit, but really well balanced and tasty. 4.5

Mouthfeel is about medium, soft fairly gentle carbonation, not dry or sticky, and at 6.8% ABV really easy going down. 4.25

Overall this is another rock solid NEIPA from Sloop. Obviously a great name. 4.25

A nice quiet Sunday morning. A few chores, then football. Looking forward to a couple good games.
My new beer for today is Maple Mornings from Rowley Farmhouse Ales in Santa Fe. Rowley is becoming one of my favorite New Mexico breweries.
Maple Mornings is an oatmeal stout with coffee and maple syrup, and is 5% ABV.
A very dark brown color with no head.
Aroma of coffee and maple syrup.
Taste of coffee, maple syrup, a little chocolate. The coffee taste persists.
A touch on the thin side.
    Good beer.

First New Beer this Sunday is the latest in Wicked Weed's Wake-N-Bake series: the 2020 reserve Vanilla Chai Latte.

Nothing particularly special about the nose; it's very pleasant, but it doesn't really scream Chai spice, or even coffee. There is a dry spiciness that could just as easily be yeast expression as Chai. It certainly grows in a caramel-like richness as it warms.

On the palate, however, this delivers. It's got everything you could want from a "Vanilla Chai Latte" stout, but doesn't go so far that you forget you're drinking a beer, with a very nice roasty and toasty malt base.

I'm not absolutely in love with this beer for my personal preference, but it's very well done overall. I'm glad there isn't more Chai than there is, as that spice can very quickly overwhelm a beer.

Juice for breakfast again. This time it is Everything's Coming Up: Tangerines from Mill House (Poughkeepsie, NY), an NEIPA "flavored with tangerine puree"

The website is under construction, but the can provides the following:
Fruit: Tangerine Hops: Hell Melon, German Amarillo, Michigan Copper Malts: Pilsner, White Wheat, Oats & Honey Malt ABV: 7% IBU: 19 canned: 12/11/20 serve: 45°-50°

Grapefruit and pine hit you break open the can. Everything looks like a ½ & ½ mixture of ruby grapefruit & orange juices with a moderate white head that quickly dissolves into a ring.
In the glass it smells like tangerine, orange, grapefruit, mango and pine needles and tastes not so much tangerine, but more like cara cara oranges, tangelo, grapefruit, orange peel, lemon zest, cantaloupe, and mango along some background honey and evergreen needles
Overall Everything Tangerine is not too bad. Loads of citrus with a piney, slightly sweet background that becomes more noticeable as it warms. A very nice fruited IPA.

Poured from a 16 oz can dated 12/02/20 into the test glass.
A - Golden straw color, excellent clarity, active carbonation feeds a never ending, towering cap. The froth is meringue like and quite impressive.
S - Floral hops jump out front, then the beautiful aromas of Pilsner malts, there is a slight hint of citrus ever so slight.
T - Very narrow band of cracker, lemongrass, warm white bread.
M - Dances across the palate, lively and crisp. Finish is dry and refreshing.
O - A very good Pale Lager, I sure hope this is a year round offering. Very good

Thanks, I will try to grab a future Maduro either on draft or fresh in a can if I can. Gave Jai Alai a second shot last year after what I believe was a bad batch, and it was better. Florida Cracker has been my favorite regular beer from them, Marshal Zhukov's Double Envelopement my favorite overall beer from them.

Below is my current plan for tackling my remaining New To Me refrigerated beers (still have others cellar - Imperial Stouts, Barleywines, Saisons and some New Glarus R & D Wild Ales) after the Barleywine tasting next weekend. Any suggested shift of prioritization for freshness considerations are greatly appreciated!

    February
    NBW #29/NBS #832:
(Oct) Founders Porter; Heretic Milk Stout & Heretic Hazelnut Porter
NBW #30/NBS #833: (Nov) Dovetail Lager, Dunkel & Rauchbier
NBW #31/NBS #834: (Nov) Haymarket Lager, Hop Butcher NEIPA & (Dec) Old Nation NEIPA
NBW #32/NBS #835: (Dec) Stone Black IPA & Hop Butcher Milk Stout

    March

    NBW #33/NBS #836:
(Jan) Une Annee Pils; Off Color BA Lager & Rev/HA BA Rye Porter
    NBW #34/NBS #837: (Jan) Three Revolution IPAs/NEIPAs
NBW #35/NBS #838: (Nov) Haymarket BA Dopplebock & (Jan) Spiteful Stout
    NBW #36/NBS #839: 2019 FW Anniversary & 2020 Trader Joes Spiced Ale

My remaining new to me beers are cellar beers or TBD. I have a moratorium on new purchases until the Spring, with the possible exception of a few singles if there is a new BA online tasting for style I don't currently have.

    Hey what's going on!?

just taking in another good weekend.. hope you all are well. A few new beers here and there, but taking it easy these days. But what's new for our hero?

Poured from the can into a tulip style glass.

Beautiful clear slightly hazed body, with small rising faint touches of fine carbonation. Big gold and orange gleaming appearance, with a faint white two finger touching head. Minimal rocky-ness in the head, some slight retention, but a fairly good sized collar. Quite a real nice looking brew.

Solid aroma. Hints a little ester of faint apricot, some sticky candy like sweetness and a fair hint of boozy alcohol. Some touches of waffery malt white cookie dough. Quite nice even if running a little hot.

Palate does real well. A bit of wet body though sort of watery honey feeling, but manages a solid flavor. Light touching malt and faint hinting fruit ester, with a light touch of yeast and malt density. Hinted heat is much more in control on the palate here, as the warmth is still there to remind you of it's style. Luckily it's not a boozy mess.

Not a bad sense of style, but lacks some of the classic big estery and depth of flavor for a big Belgian.

    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.75 | 3.82/5 rDev -2.6%

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz Nordic pint glass not sure when it was canned, but coming from the source and everything about this beer tells me 2 weeks tops. Pours a hazy yellow with a finger plus sticky white head that leaves loads of thick lace with amazing retention. 4.75

Aroma is passionfruit, guava, mandarin, pineapple, ripe melon, and apricot. 4.75

Taste follows passionfruit, guava, pineapple, cantaloupe, mandarin, and apricot really awesome and balanced. 4.75

Mouthfeel is medium, not dry or sticky, soft almost creamy carbonation, and at 6.2% it drinks bigger and but goes down really easy. 4.75

Overall this one when I first started drinking it I didn’t know how much ABV it had and I would have guessed over 7%. This is a special beer. Thanks @jzeilinger for this can. 4.75

Happy Sunday everyone! Today I am drinking a newly remade "hit refresh" collab from Trillium and Garage Project, South Pacific Soufflé imperial stout with Papua New Guinea vanilla bean, Flight coffee & cacao nibs.
I did not try this last time it was released, I think it sold out fairly quickly and I just wasn't in the area and didn't make a good enough effort to get it basically. Got this bottle delivered recently with a bunch of cans and a couple other nice new bottles that I've been featuring in the NBWs. A little more info on the Flight coffee from NZ can be found here, interestingly enough the flavor notes from their website say raspberry, Dr Pepper, and hibiscus. There are some other flavor notes that I found in a review of it here. Sounds pretty interesting and delish. Garage Project is a brewery located in New Zealand as well, hence the "South Pacific" soufflé.

Pours dark brown black with a minimal and fleeting light brown foam head, some sticky residue, not much lacing or retention.

Smells absolutely rich and luxurious, like a decadent chocolate cake soufflé dripping with dense sweet coffee and vanilla cream, kinda just like the picture on the label. Super rich chocolate, creamy rich vanilla, dense rich coffee, subtle fruity notes, dark brown sugar, layers of cake, delicious chocolate soufflé dessert, pastries, pretty sweet, rich, luxuriant, chocolatey, all natural though and just superb. One of the most rich decadent sweet dessert aromas I've smelled in any beer, like a popular brand dark chocolate bar.

Taste follows with it's richness, decadent chocolate desserts, rich creamy vanilla ice cream filling, high end rich roasty coffee filling throughout, hints of dark fruit cut through a tad, slight blueberry, raspberry, plum notes, beautiful wonderful coffee on the side of dense rich creamy chocolate soufflé, dark brown sugar caramelization, dark caramel, fresh vanilla beans, it is definitively a dessert stout, though while sweet, rich and decadent to an extreme degree, for me it isn't too sweet or overboard sugar-wise. It just tastes like a rich chocolate dessert with a side of luxurious coffee, nothing I would complain about. The taste, like the aroma, is certainly intense to an extreme degree, it's hard to imagine this being more flavorful, it's just one of those heavy hitter dessert/pastry stouts that checks the sweet marks yet doesn't go overboard. I'll be sipping on this throughout the day for several hours, it's a big bottle, high abv, pretty heavy and dense, highly enjoyable to me though, and one of the best flavored stouts I have ever tasted honestly. If I gave this anything less than a 4.75 I wouldn't feel honest and just, for me, I love it.

Feels medium-fuller bodied, creamy, smooth, slick, a little airy, bubbly, moderate low carbonation, lingering sweet notes, decadent chocolate, rich coffee, vanilla ice cream, desserts, amazing.

Overall I'm loving this. I usually enjoy these flavored stouts from Trillium when they are fresh, this one though is a particular standout. Maybe I just haven't had a fresh sweeter dessert style stout from them in a while, really glad I was able to get this though, seriously one of my favorite dessert stouts that I've tried, I think this is better than Maple Mackinac, a little similar, more dense and rich though, more flavorful dessert notes, heavy hitter, banging. Cheers all, and happy New Beer Weekend!

Bull N Bear is a recently opened brewery in Summit NJ. The owner has a Wall Street back ground and some of his beer names are from the financial industry. Todays beer is an Imperial Stout named Standard and Pours. This is a plain jane Imperial Stout only malt, hops, water and yeast are used. It looks the way all Imperial Stouts do black with a thick brown head, Powerful aroma of malt with hints of coffee and chocolate. The taste is similar to the aroma a bit sweet with a touch of hop bitterness. The mouthfeel is full and thick. The finish is dry and lasting, This brew hides it 10% ABV well, Overall an outstand example of an Imperial Stout. well done

Howdy all! Today I have three new beers, and I'm happy to report that they're all different styles. Love when that happens. Up first is DDH Oh-J by Lone Pine Brewing.

I really enjoy this beer's single dry-hopped sibling, and I've seen some positive reviews for this one from BAs who I trust, so I figured why not grab a can? The pour is very pale yellow with a consistent haze throughout the body. The initial head formation is solid enough, but it quickly fades away to a thin, unimpressive ring after a few minutes in my glass leaving behind some soapy, inconsistent lace patterns. Legs aren't really existent here, either, so I think I can safely say I don't think this is a particularly-attractive beer.

The nose is kind of odd to me as well. It leads off with an almost "artificial orange" note that I don't remember from the original Oh-J, but I found that I acclimated to it pretty quickly. I pick up some nice mango and papaya tones here too, with a little bit of tangerine and grapefruit as well. It's overall a pretty good smell once I got past the unusual beginning; it does open up and become more cohesive eventually. Apparently this uses Citra, Mosaic, and Vic Secret, but I'm missing some of the complexity that trio would typically provide, in all honesty.

Flavor profile is also solid, but it does feel a bit underwhelming to me for whatever reason. I have expressed some concern with being all "IPA'd out" recently, though I did have some fantastic ones yesterday, which I mentioned in the WBAYDN? thread of the day. I get a lot of harsh resin upfront with some good flavors of tangerine, mango, passion fruit, and spice-laden pine/spruce, but it isn't as saturated or impressive as a lot of DDH stuff out there. I dunno, not really sold here. Feel is smooth and mostly soft/juicy with good, level-headed carbonation and a semi-dry finish. A bit of hop burn in there, but not a deal-breaker. Wish I liked this one more, but I think I prefer the normal Oh-J over it. I'd have to revisit that beer, though, as it's been a while.

Back soon with a couple more...

Ozark Beer Co.'s Session IPA, 5.0% ABV; 3.95 overall

    45 IBUs

Pours an effervescent gold with a thumb+ of pearl colored head. Nice head retention and and alright lacing

    S: Grassy, some citrus notes

T: Bready sweetness, grassyness, some dryness up front. Big malty breadyness, some lime and grassyness as this warms. Finishes dry & grassy with a touch of grainyness

MF: Medium body, crisp carbonation & nice balance

Not a fan of session IPAs, this on works for me because of the ABV, a little heavier which is fine by me, nice drinkability
