This is probably the best lager I have ever had. A friend was visiting in Ohio and brought back a sixer for me to try. Those that are familiar, what would you say is an equivalent that is widely sold in US? Guys up in the midwest please weigh in

Definitely not the best, certainly not the worst I've ever had. Too many good choices for well-made lagers to easily call one the "best."

This is being imported now?* Nice.
    @grantcty

What did you pay per-6-pack? Augustiner is always pretty pricey around here.

*Just looked more closely at the label -- that's Edelstoff and yeah, really good if you can get it fresh.

$15.99 /6. Same price as the Augustiner Maximator which is excellent.
I cost average with Old Style at $5.80 /6.

Oh I hope the answer is 'yes' that it is imported. That will get me out of my snowy cocoon and searching for it.

Edit - My post was slow.

It is, and has been -- I mistook it for something else, but the Edelstoff is one of the 2 Augustiner has exported for a while.

Fair warning on your search -- it's priced so high (see above) that it tends to sit on shelves very long.

@miwestcoaster do you know how augustiner dates by any chance? Thanks in advance.

Last I looked, this was another problem -- I don't think they date. That may have changed, though.

Yikes. That's even more than I usually see it here ($13).

Just checked locally -- up to $15. :grimacing:

Either way, best-by or bottled-on, 2019 would have sent me down the aisle.

I’m a fan of this attitude and I do think date bias is a real thing. I just don’t want to buy something over a year old if it’s priced a little higher than my normal purchases :beers:

My wife is an Akron native, so we had a pre-wedding party on her grandfather's nearby lake house. We got a keg of Great Lakes Brewing Dortmunder as well as a keg of Fat Head's Head Hunter.

I remember a quite a few of her family members who "weren't big beer people" that ended up being frequently sighted pulling Dortmunder drafts for themselves and having some fun. That beer was a big hit that day. I love that Great Lakes has an export lager as a flagship.

The beer wasn't bottled in 2019. It was the 153rd day of 2020--June 1, 2020.

I emailed Augustiner when their bottles were first available in MN a year ago and got a reply from their QC. The code on my Maximator said L311081952. He said that the beer was bottled November 7, 2019. So, the first three numbers are the Julian day and the sixth and seventh numbers make up the year.

Not to take away from DG, but I think they consider Edmund Fitzgerald as their flagship. At least I saw it as part of the "Flagship February" lineup at a local retailer.
