You are invited to join the BeerAdvocate community on Friday, March 12th, Saturday, March 13th, and Sunday March 14th for an online tasting of "porters".

Look, we all know that the style definitions of a porter are incredibly difficult to discern given the naming conventions used by craft breweries. As such, if a beer is labeled as a porter, its fair game for including in this tasting. A classic like Bells Porter? Great! An imperial porter with the candy aisle thrown in? Great! Barrel aged porter? Great! The only porter style we are not including this time around are baltic porters - these are tentatively going to be featured in their own tasting thread down the road. Beer Advocate lists the following porter styles that are all fair game for this tasting:
This tasting will run from Friday March 12th through Sunday March 14th. I am not planning to have a separate tasting thread this time around.

Regardless if the beer you end up drinking is completely new to you, an old favorite, or a cellar pull, stop in at any point on those two days and post what beer you're drinking. When posting in this thread include your thoughts, tasting notes, and/or a full review of it. Your notes and/or review can be as detailed as you wish, but some comments on the beer are required - this is a tasting after all! Posts accompanied by picture(s) are, as always, highly encouraged.

Need suggestions for a beer to get for this thread? Post here and you'll get lots of helpful suggestions. And, if possible, try to support your local breweries when purchasing beers for this tasting thread.

Finally, have an idea for a future online tasting that you would like to see? Go over to the Online Beer Tasting Idea Submission Thread and suggest an idea for a future tasting: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/online-beer-tastings-idea-submission-thread.476806/

Looking ahead, the next tasting will be in honor of Orval day on March 20, 2021: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/orval-day-march-20-2021.655568/

And then later this spring we will have a "bock(s)" tasting and that one will be hosted by the estimable Poo-bah @TongoRad in late April/early May.

I plan on having a mix of widely available and local, of classic/traditional, and "enhanced" (i.e. barrel-aged, add-junk flavored, ... I haven't quite settled on which).

I do know of a couple of classics I will definitely include, plus one from my cellar.

Since most will be in the mid 5% abv, I'll likely have around 3 each day.

Work depending I can be in. I have just had two porters new to me brought back from NC. Oatmeal porter, not had one of these yet and a coconut porter. I have a VAS in the basement and maybe I can find one or two more not if the major porters.

    Enjoy

For Orval day, we should have a competition to see who can get the tallest head (note I avoided saying "the most head"). Every time I've had Orval, I poured it too aggressively and it was 75% head.

And oh what a sight it was to see!

I once had a sub 1 year old Orval and I was shocked at how different it was to the aged versions I was so used to.

Oh, Porter won the vote? Surprised by that one, but the people have spoken!

I don’t have a ton of porters in the cellar, mostly at the Funky Buddha adjunct laden sweet ones, tend to be real hit or miss with aging so not ideal cellar pulls but I have a couple fun ideas I could consider.

Who’s busting the old school Olfabrikken?!? Man that was an awesome beer. Would be super impressed if that’s survived in anyone’s cellar cause it’s been a while since retirement of that one.

Actually, I guess that’s a Baltic Porter so would be excluded. Curious as to why the decision to exclude those.

I believe it was because Baltic Porters are actually lagers.
