Light, honey amber body; thick, lively carbonation; dense and rocky head, white and frothy; sticky sheets of foam coat the glass. Rich, malty aroma infuse with a touch of fruity esters; earthy. Rich, malty flavor; dull sugary sweetness; earthy, spicy hop presence and bitterness; peppery. Heavy body; big residual sugar presence; moderately prickly on the palate; underlying heavy sweetness yet finishes dry.

Bottle dating information: BESTBY 06/08/21 LKW 20342 091913 (I'm guessing bottled early December 2020). This is a big IPA, somewhat heavy in the sweetness while highlighting a massive hop presence. Perhaps a tad too heavy with the residual sugars, but still quite intriguing.

    -------------

A quiet but productive day, yard work and minor household repairs were made. The big thrill was helping a neighbor disassemble a Yugoslavian Mauser 98 (as best we could) so he could add a newer, different caliber (6.5mm vs. 8mm) barrel. We weren't successful is removing the barrel from the receiver, but that's why god made gunsmiths...

Anyway, a good day overall, and a good reason to drink good beer...

A careful pour from a 16-oz. can released a finger of light beige creamy foam with long retention and one broad arch of lace. Semi-opaque, peach colored body with red-orange highlights.

White bread, toast and cracker with faint dough greet the nose. Fresh hops, both citrus and piney are even with the malt.

Semi-dry with a fast developing hop bitterness, a hint of fruit (citrus, pear and apple) sweetness is balanced buy warming alcohol. Items from the smell are bigger and very well balanced, piney hops and toast almost stand out. The finish is fast and clean, almost crisp as the hop bite rises to above average during the somewhat long aftertaste.

Medium-light bodied with soft and lasting carbonation that keeps the big flavors in check. A little on the dark and opaque side, high ABV (unobtrusive), bold West Coast hops and plenty of malt are well balanced. This Beer looks and drinks like a NEIPA (a drier one). it would rate higher in that category. How about a New England Imperial Pale Ale category, just kidding.
    Canned on 03/01/21.

Tonight's closer is a bit of a surprise, as despite Modern Times' exhaustive beer list, this one wasn't in the BA database.

This is Dragon Master, a 13.6% ABV imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels, and with hazelnuts, cocoa, and vanilla - apparently a blend of Dragon Mask and Beastmaster (now it makes sense; I had to check Untappd to learn that little detail). This lovely nightcap was provided thanks to @Xul - and I mean thanks, because holy crap!

I'm going to cut to the chase: this is freaking amazing.

The looks didn't impress me much. The nose, at first, was very pleasant, outstanding even ... but then with each sniff, over time, it just got better and better.

    And then, the taste.

    Oh, the taste.

Like the aroma, it just tastes better and better with each sip. It's an incredibly potent, rich, and flavorful beer, yet it almost steps lightly onto your palate, as if afraid that the full weight would crush you if unleashed all at once. It's a gentle giant, stepping softly, but you can't help but recognize the sheer magnitude of the beast, regardless of how softly it steps.

Tasting notes are perhaps not entirely what you'd expect. The hazelnuts, which can easily dominate a profile, are subtle and complementary. The same goes for the bourbon, which is present and wonderful, but not powerful, never dominating the sip. The cocoa is present from start to finish, but blends with the malt profile perfectly, itself lending huge tones of espresso, chocolate, red grape, brown sugar, molasses, and toast. The vanilla mostly announces its presence on the finish; the sip ends in an uptick of sorts, a sweet kiss of vanilla, bourbon, and brown sugar, making you eager to reach for the glass again.

This is stunningly good; out of my last 100 reviews, only one other beer cracks above 4.6 (Primordial Unity, at an absurd 4.92 - and yeah, it's that good; my rating is only +4.0% rDev!). 100 reviews; 2 beers rated this high.

    Yeah.

Cassidy, the Dragon Mask I had yesterday was pretty damn phenomenal. This somehow tops it. I'm glad it was a bomber so my partner could get a sizeable pour. Thank you.

Bentonville Spring Wrecker White IPA, 6.5 ABV; 3.15 overall

Pours a slightly hazed gold with a thumb of pearl white head. Above average ( barely ) head retention & lacing

    S: Rubber bands & cloves

T: A little green banana, coves, dryness & wheattyness, plus grassyness up front. More cloves & rubber bands, plus a little grapefruit & coriander once warm. Finishes dry with cloves, & rubber bands, grassyness & some lemon

MF: Light bodied, fairly firm carbonation

This beer misses the mark to me, not tasting of the Citra or Mosaic hops supposedly in this. Not a fan of White IPAs, but even more so. More like a Wit or Hefe & would've garnered higher scores

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Teku glass bottled 02/02/21. Pours a very dark brown with a 2 finger sticky light brown head that leaves massive gobs of lace with excellent retention. 4.5

Aroma maple, graham cracker, oaked vanilla, char, a kiss of bourbon, and dark chocolate. 4.25

Taste follows maple, graham cracker, char, woody vanilla, and dark chocolate. 4.5

Mouthfeel is above average, maybe a whisker dry, fairly soft creamy carbonation, and at 9.2% it drinks bigger, but still easy drinking for the style. 4.5

Overall I will say I really enjoyed this one and would recommend getting some if you get the chance. 4.5

This was released end of February, so that's likely why it's not made it's way into the BA database yet. It's a killer beer. My much shorter notes: "Nice roasty hazelnut aroma vs. the typical Nutella thing. Tons of chocolate on the nose, sweetened by the vanilla. On the palate, the barrel shines through and the chocolate is center stage with a rich cocoa powder like flavor. Plenty of vanilla and hazelnut backing that up."

Maybe @Pinz412 would enjoy one of these bottles? I might have an extra...

Buffalo Bayou Turtle Murder Scotch Ale with Pecans & Peanut butter, 8.5% ABV; 3.59 overall

Pours an effervescent chestnut with one finger of tan head. Some head retention & lacing

    S: Peanut butter & toastyness

T: Peanuts, dryness, toastyness & a little peatyness up front. A little brown sugar, leafy hops & dryness as this warms, some maple & toffee as well. Finishes dry with toffee and not much else, some leafy & woody hop bitterness

    MF: Medium body, slight carbonation

Opened up more as this warmed, not bad but the featured ingredients don't really work with this style for me

Good evening everyone! Kicking this weekend off with the latest pilsner from Hop Butcher. This is Alsace a "French-style" pilsner hopped with elixir and mistral hops. The term "French-style" pilsner would be in reference to the hops used as both elixir and mistral hops originated in the Alsace region along the Rhine.

This one pours a crystal clear golden color. Initially the beer is effervescent which feeds a thin white foamy head. However the head dissipates pretty quickly after forming and then the effervescence settles down and the beer appears more still. The aroma on this really threw me - I honestly wasn't sure what to expect since I was not familiar with these hops, but it was initially very weed-y when I first poured it. And I do mean, it smelled like marijuana. But then, that settled down and there were notes of light lemon and orange citrus, leather, a bit of an herbal spiciness, and some straw.

The taste has notes of straw, lemon and tangerine citrus, dried grass, leather, spicy and a light weediness. The finish gives way into an exceedingly astringent bitterness. It is a weird, unpleasant bitterness that really lingers on the palate. Feel is medium bodied, pretty crisp, bright carbonation.

Overall this is an interesting beer - its more of an American pilsner brewed with French hops. The hops are allowed to shine through on a very simple, mild malt backbone. But that means that the astringent bitterness on the finish from those hops completely dominates and leaves (literally) a bad taste in the mouth. An interesting beer, but unfortunately another "miss" for me in terms of lagers from Hop Butcher.

    Hello New Beer Weekend!!!

Finally home from a VERY busy day at work, but not straight home. I get a call from my friends that they need beer. Ok, I'll get something and bring it over.
Well, they were being really stupid, and then wanting me to drive to a suburb, and get their drunk friends, who like peeing on carpets to bring over to their house to party, and bring them back after. What the hell am I? Some crazy 20 year old college kid?
    HELL NO!

I wish I were making that up.

So, I'm home, a whole hell of a lot later than I wanted to be, and it's time for a new beer. Thank goodness!

Eagle Park Brewing - The Pineapple Upsidedown Cheesecake Incident - Kettle Sour - No ABV listed on the can or on Untapped.

Ok, this is making up for the stupidity I had to deal with. I am liking this beer a lot.

This beer pours a very murky, hazy, dank dark reddish color. There's a 2 finger mostly white head here. The head retention is good, and there's some nice lacing on the glass.
The nose is really mostly graham cracker here. There's also a hint of vanilla, but no real pineapple or cherry, which the can bills, in the aroma.
Taste - Ok, the pineapple is here, and up front. The cherry seems to me to be a slight middle flavor, with the graham cracker and vanilla on the backside.
Good bodied. There's a lactose feel, though there's none in here. A slight tartness that lingers.
    Very delicious sour.

This will be it for tonight, or, now, early morning, thanks to the stupidity. I might be able to check in with something later today, though I'll be hanging out with friends for Easter - no, not the stupid ones.

    Cheers!

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Teku glass canned on 3/03/21. Pours a very attractive yellow orange with a finger sticky white head that leaves scattered lines of lace with solid retention. 4.25

Aroma peach, mango, passionfruit, pineapple, and apricot fairly tame, but pleasant enough. 4

Taste follows passionfruit, mango, peach, pineapple, and apricot low on bitterness and actually no alcohol detected. 4.25

Mouthfeel is above medium, rather soft carbonation, not dry or sticky, and at 8.5% it feels like you are only drinking 7%. 4.25

Overall I will always say I love when a Big NEDIPA drinks smaller than its actual ABV, but I am disappointed when a Imperial Stout drinks smaller than the ABV. This is a sneaky NEDIPA that I would definitely recommend giving a shot. 4.25 Looks like the bunny made it passed our Bassett Hound last night, enjoy your Easter all. I made some Kick Ass Bloodies for later this morning to be enjoyed with family and friends.

Taste follows tangerine, cantaloupe, blueberry, papaya, and apricot. 4.25

Mouthfeel is big, rather soft slightly creamy carbonation, maybe a little sticky but not dry, and at 8% ABV really drinkable. 4.5

Good day BAs! Off to a high-sugar start to the sunny and mild day that is unfolding outside. Today's New Breakfast Beer is:

Black Friday Waffle Breakfast T.O.R.I.S. from Hoppin’ Frog. Received on 1/3/21, 2021. Picked up at the brewery for $ 13.77 (Including tax) for 22 oz bottle ($ 0.626/oz). Stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 4/4//21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated bottle. Served at 58.6 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 62.7 degrees.
    Appearance – 4.25.
First pour – Brown (SRM 20), opaque.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. When rear-lite, same. Pours and looks like used motor oil.
Head – Average (Maximum 3.2 cm, aggressive center pour), brown sugar, high density, average retention, leaving a two to three mm crown fed by effervescence, and a thin partial layer.
Lacing – None, but at 13.8% ABV none is expected.
Aroma – 4 – Brown sugar. No hops, no malt, no yeast.
Flavor – 4 – Begins slightly sweet and brown sugary, maybe some molasses but quickly becomes bitter on the hard palate. No hop flavor, no malt, no yeast. No alcohol (13.8 % ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma, although a gastric smoldering occurs. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 4 – Full, creamy approaching syrupy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4 (After deducting 0.25 point for undated bottle) Oddly disappointing since I was expecting some maple and a little waffle/bready flavor, but no, it’s straight brown sugar.
    Rating 3.97, rDev -3.2%.

Pours pitch black. Looks a bit thick when pouring. There's a nice 2 finger tan head. The head retention is good, and there's some nice lacing on my "coffee" glass.
The nose has a nice combination of coffee and maple syrup. These aromas work well together.
Taste - The coffee really hits up front, and hard. There's also a hint of chocolate that tickles my taste buds. On the backside the maple syrup hits, and lingers. Now you'd expect it to be really sweet, but it's not. Yeah, there's some sweetness to the maple syrup flavor, but it's not overpowering.
The body is good here. About the thickness you'd expect.
    Very delicious!

I have another IPA today, this one from Rowley Farmhouse Ales in Santa Fe. The Other One is a hazy IPA , 6% ABV.
Hazy orange color. Just the hint of a head.
Not much aroma. Fruity, both citrus and tropical. Sweet.
A little lacking in taste. Faint pineapple, melon, and grapefruit.
    Late hops mouthfeel.
Not a bad beer, just not a very good one.

    Lazy Magnolia Coffee Shoppe
Cream Stout brewed with Coffee & Chocolate (per label)
12oz bottle with notched label indicating a bottle date of 2/25/21 poured into a perfect pint glass at fridge temp 6% ABV. The beer pours very dark brown with chestnut highlights and meager khaki colored head. The head recedes to a thin ring and island of tiny bubbles. The aroma is mild with dark chocolate and roasted malt. The taste is semisweet chocolate with a mild lactose presence and even less coffee. If that sounds condescending, it's not. This is a cream sound gently enhanced with additional flavors. Mild roasty bitterness on the finish. The mouthfeel is medium plus bodied with just less than medium carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, good. I was a bit shocked at first taste, since the bottle features a big cup of coffee in the center of the label. I enjoy a good cream stout so I'm ok with the restrained coffee notes.

I 100% grabbed this due to label. I truly enjoy coffee beers and my limited experience with Lazy Magnolia has never provided a bad or exceptional beer. This is a good beer but there could be some who cry foul for truth in advertising...

Cheers all and enjoy your Sunday!
