Welcome to another weekend Beer Advocates. I usually try to coordinate my planned NBW / NBS beers by style and/or area while also juggling freshness by style. Last week, with the massive BIF barleywine contingent, I audibled and pulled out my first SN Bigfoot on Sunday and was really glad I did.

This week freshness is of importance, as I have two beers packaged in December that are long overdue. I will share the beer's features, and my take on the beer's appearance, aroma, taste, mouthfeel and overall impression. I look forward to reading your beers, learning about beers I haven't had the fortune to come across, or other's takes on beers I've had once or dozens of times.

My beer for today is a beer I unfortunately came across in my cellar organization as past code, best enjoyed within six months. I popped one open, and it was pretty good, but I did not want to review a beer beyond it's best by date, so I picked up a single bottle last week and looking forward to see if I note any significant differences. This is a nice easy beer to start the morning.

Bell's Kalamazoo Stout (Original '88 Recipe)

    Bottle Notes:
12 oz, bottled 12/23/20, 6.0% ABV, recommended shelf life 6 months, refrigerated since purchased from store shelves last week. Stout brewed with brewer's licorice. Named after the city where it all began, Kalamazoo Stout is one of our most classic recipes. This smooth, full-bodied stout offers a blend of aromas and flavors of dark chocolate and freshly roasted coffee, balanced with a significant hop presence.

Appearance: Aggressive pour into a shaker pint glass yielded a thick rich bubbly tan head. Very dark black base. Head lasted for several minutes, looked like a root beer float a creamy richness lingered post receding. Finished pouring the remainder at that point. 4.25

    Aroma:
Nice roast malt aroma, bakers chocolate, black licorice lead. Hops help balance, pine the predominate hop aroma. 4.0

    Taste:
Taste consistent with aroma, roast malt, dark roast coffee, cocoa, black licorice. Sweet flavors balanced well by a heavy hops presence, pine taste less pronounced than the aroma. Multi-faceted, blend works really well. 4.25

    Mouthfeel:
Thin to medium body, light creaminess, carbonation light and sustained, slightly dry, perfect balance between sweet and bitter, easy drinking, clean finish. 4.0

    Overall:
Overall this is a very well crafted stout. Really love the hop presence and varied flavors. Not surprised they would keep this recipe for over three decades. Another wonderful beer from the folks in Comstock, and of course, Kalamazoo! 4.25

This flavors and appearance of the beer was the biggest difference between this somewhat fresh version and the 1 3/4 year version I had earlier from the cellar. Will finish the rest of the older ones, they are fine, just not up to the level when fresh. Definitely want to grab more of these after I clear my current stock. Looking forward to reading your reviews and will return tomorrow with another December 2020 beer, this one from a local brewer. Cheers!

Slowly coming out of a year long hibernation. Was invited to referee futsal in the northern regionals in Minneapolis . Was able to find time to visit Casanova Liquors just over the border in Wisconsin . Secured some sought after New Glarus beers plus some specialities from Three Sheep, Central Waters and oliphant. Now my travels have taken me to south Florida, quite a climate change as it snowed in Biston yesterday . But, my new beer is from an oft discussed , new state , new brewery to me, Drekker

Good day BAs! Off with a cross-post with WBAYDN, thanks to @ChicagoJ for starting the NBW thread.

Perfect Storm from Tree House. Received on 9/4/21 from @Rub_This_BBQ in NBW BIF #13. 16 oz can stored upside-down at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 17/4/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamped “GOOD OL’ HERBIE HANCOCK 3/16/21”. Served at 44.9 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 51.2 degrees.
    Appearance – 4.25.
First pour – Pale Straw (SRM 2), murky and nearly opaque.
Body – Straw (SRM 3), murky and opaque. When rear-lite, same.
Head – Large (Maximum 6.5 cm, aggressive center pour), floral white, high density, average retention, diminishing to an eight to ten mm crown and a thick partial cap. As the head collapses, extreme examples of three-dimensional torn curtain lacing remain above the crown. Second pour produces a high density 3.5 cm head.
Lacing – Good. Head retraction and volume reduction leaves wide three-dimensional bands of tiny to medium bubbles. See also above.
Aroma – 4.25 – Citrus and conifers, moderate strength. No malt, no yeast.
Flavor – 4 – Begins marginally dank with some generic citrus in the background but lacks the refreshingness of citrus. No malt, no yeast. No alcohol (8 % ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma. No gastric warming occurs. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 4 – Full, creamy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4 Looks like dirty pineapple juice. Both the flavor and aroma are weak. Head and lacing are excellent.
    Rating 4.08, rDev -8.9%.

Last night on The Last Drive-In, season three opener, JoeBob brought up Tommy James and the Shondells. This seems apropos to the Tree House brews I've had - "Citrus and Simcoe, over and over"

    A Little Sip of Sunshine!

So, what does Sunshine taste like? Well, today I will be drinking a new brand from Lawson’s called Little Sip IPA which is advertised as being a relative of their established brand of Sip of Sunshine. As this beer is detailed on the Lawson’s website:

    “IPA: 6.2% ABV

Our little cousin to Sip of Sunshine IPA has a juicy, fruit-forward character layered with tropical hop flavors and bright floral aromas. Notes of grapefruit and pineapple complement this delectably balanced beer.

Little Sip IPA quenches your thirst as you reach the summit of your favorite hike. It’s the beer you grab for the victorious celebration after that birdie during a golf game, and it keeps you company while you mow the lawn. It pairs best with outdoor adventures and fun, and it never disappoints! Coming in at 6.2% ABV, it is delightfully crushable.”

Well, I am a fan of Sip of Sunshine so I have high hopes for this ‘cousin’ beer.

Served in my Spiegelau IPA glass:

    Appearance:

Golden yellow with a slight bit of haze. A big fluffy white head.

    Aroma:

Mostly tropical fruit aromas but there is some citrus and even a very tiny bit of dank. Lots going on here!

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with predominantly tropical fruit flavor but pleasantly accompanied with citrus and yup that tiny hint of dank as well. As Shrek would say: “layers”. There is a firm bitterness to this beer.

    Mouthfeel:

This beer has a medium body with an off dry finish. There is also a very subtle aspect of ‘juiciness’ to this beer as well.

    Overall:

I think this beer is very good! There is lots going on in “layers” and it all works well together.

Assuming this beer properly captures the flavor of sunshine I would describe sunshine as tasting like ‘layers’ of tropical fruit with some citrus and just a very tiny bit of dank.

Due to the firm bitterness, the mostly clear-ish appearance and just a very subtle nod to ‘juicy’ this beer is closer to the IPA spectrum of a West Coast IPA vs. being a Juicy/Hazy IPA.

Cheers to the folks of Lawson’s for producing a tasty ‘cousin’ sunshine beer!!

L - crystal clear west coast/Pacific banger; head is good, good lacing down the glass. Nice.
S - A pineapple and a mango hooked up in a binge-drinking contest and woke up bitter.
T - See above; more of the same, I'm surprised at this beer but I'm not sure why; definitely on the lean side of tropical, finishes a little clean and then dives off the edge. Not sweet, not overly bitter, but finishes nice, dry, and tight.
F- good carbonation for minutes on end in the glass, good crisp finish, not a strong aftertaste just well made.
O - I like it, not sure I'd buy a ton of it, but it's a really interesting well-made experimental hop(s) IPA from HA.

Welcome to the weekend, BAs! We'll see how many new beers I actually get to, but I'm starting out with something appropriate for the morning: BBA Hot Cakes with Banana, Coconut, and Maple Syrup, courtesy of that crazy generous BA, @MacMalt :

This wasn't in the database, and it turns out, it is indeed a variant. I have rectified that for all three Hot Cakes that I found.

OK, this one isn't for everyone. You've got to like pastry stouts. You've got to like dessert stouts. But if you do, it's about as good as you'll find - with some caveats.

Caveat 1: the appearance is nothing impressive. My first impression was, in fact, a rather large floatie (likely coconut). The head takes some rousing, as though from a deep sleep, and then - not unlike a deep sleeper rudely awakened - fizzes angrily before hiding again beneath the deep dark blanket of the body. Head production and retention suck, is what I'm saying.

Caveat 2: despite the brewery's description and the list of additives, the aroma is ... good, but not excellent. It lacks power and depth. It makes me want to drink it, and it's very good, but if you were to review this blind, you'd never guess there's banana and coconut added, as they're very complementary to - and perhaps hidden by - the bourbon and base malts.

OK, so caveats out of the way: This. Is. De. Licious.

In a recent thread, one person was asking if "you" could really taste all the flavors you're describing. Part of my (unnecessarily verbose, as is my wont) answer suggested that in many cases, we are listing multiple fruit (say, for hops) or spices because we are searching for flavor analogues, something that the taste of the beer reminds us of - something more familiar. Not necessarily that we get actual peach, banana, papaya, nectarine, yadda yadda (hell, have a banana freeze pop sometime; tastes nothing like an actual banana, and yet your brain still goes: "Hey, banana!").

    Not here. Noooooo, not here.

Everything - and I mean everything - is going on here.

It really does remind me of a banana pancake, dotted with chocolate kisses, and drizzled with maple syrup. It's not unlike those diabetes-and-heart-attack-inducing confectionery masterpieces one might find at the Multinational Home of Hot Cakes (minus the cream cheese, because the geniuses at Magnify aren't savages).

This is now my 6th Magnify brew (not counting other collabs with the likes of Kane), and what I've learned is that they do BIG very well.

I just realized I went through all that without actually saying much about the beer's discrete taste and feel. Whatever. This is long enough already, and as you know, the link will be below.

This is magnificent. I'm afraid I've set the bar way too high already.

    I'm tired.
    But first, beer.
@JayORear bombed me with a ninja strike during the latest round of the NBW BIF, and so I figure it's only right to pop into one of those cans for my entry this morning.
I was feeling something light and refreshing after a long stretch at work, and the weather has turned sunny of late, so Sun Servants seemed like a natural choice. This is my first beer from Free Will Brewing, and I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the others he sent my way!

Not only was this beer new to me, it was new to BA!

The pour, as you can see, is a pale gold, similar to the colour of apple juice. Not quite crisp and clear, you could nonetheless make out the lettering on the can through the glass, if you were so inclined. Piles of lacy white foam that stick to the glass as they recede.

Nose is initially some grassy and spicy hops, with round biscuity malts underneath. Some light grain and honey sweetness waves through.

Tasting it takes the same notes and shifts them slightly... the biscuity character becomes more bready, the honey note becomes more nectar, the grassy hops become more nondescript earthiness.

Thanks Jay for sending this my direction!!

    Cheers!

Happy New Beer Weekend everyone! I'm starting today with a new barrel-aged stout from Trillium called Endless Night & Day.

500ml bottle pours a dense black liquid with some maroon red brown edges, and a small light brown head that recedes to a ring.

Smells like big bold cold brew coffee, rich chocolate, vanilla, dessert confectioneries, roasted malt, dark caramel, molasses, toffee, hint of smoke, dried fruit, oak, sweet whiskey, with some mild earthy hop notes.

Tastes really rich, pretty sweet, dessert chocolates, fresh vanilla, roasty smooth cold brewed coffee, dark chocolate pudding notes, some dark caramel, toffee, molasses, hint of smoke, char, whiskey oak barrel, toasted nuttiness, dried fruit, with a touch of earthy hop. Super flavorful, intense, really rich, sweet yet not overboard, pretty decent balance, delicious.

Feels medium-full bodied, thick and viscous, smooth with low carbonation.

Overall another delicious stout brewed by Trillium. Definitely on the moderate sweet to sweet side, great utilization of the ingredients as they all come through with finesse and balance without anything too overpowering. If you like coffee chocolate and vanilla, and don't mind your stouts a little on the sweet side, and don't mind paying $20 for a 500ml, this is a pretty good one, really liking this. Cheers all!

This NE-style IIPA was also provided by @MacMalt , because that dude is a madman. I love the tartan edge to the bottom of the can.

This is an excellent imperial NE-style IPA. Almost equal parts juicy and herbal, I'm curious as to the overall hop blend, although I suspect Galaxy, among others. It's a bit sharp, especially as it warms, but that barely slows me down - because it's also delicious!

Like @2beerdogs , I also found the nose more potent than the flavor, albeit not by much; it's still packed with flavor.

    Very enjoyable - very!

Anchor Porter, I’m not 100% sure that I haven’t had this beer before. It may have been enjoyed many years ago on vacation in Ca.. Seeing it on a shelf in NJ yesterday was a shock in any case. Picked up a 6 pack and cooled it down a bit in my wine cooler. Anchor has been brewing Porter for a long and does a fine job of it. This beer is just what I expect a Porter to be. It pours jet black with a thick lasting brown head. A strong aroma of roasted malt comes next. The taste is malty with a well blended mix of chocolate, coffee caramel and a hint of bitterness. There is a full mouthfeel and a lasting finish. Overall excellent brew as good a bottled as I have had. Hope it stays around. This beer was packaged on 12/18/20 not fresh but it did not taste stale in any way.

Going to go with a second beer today, this one an "English-Style Mild" from a new to me brewery in the near southwest suburbs.

    BuckleDown Brewing Hooligan Soup

    Can Notes:
4.3% ABV, 16 oz, canned 12/10/20. An English Style Mild.

Appearance: Dark chestnut brown clear base, creamy eggshell white head lingers a few minutes before leaving soapy lacing and a light cover over the base. 4.0

    Aroma:
Sweet aroma, bakers chocolate malt, almonds, caramel and toffee. 4.0

    Taste:
Consistent with aroma, a tad lighter in strength. Pleasurable blend of malt, chocolate, caramel, toffee, almonds and walnuts. Fresh baked dark rye. It's all there and really well blended. Consistent with style, not too sweet. 4.25

    Mouthfeel:
Thin, a bit watery, consistent fizzy carbonation throughout. Slightly dry and sweet, didn't gather a hop taste profile but beer held in check with the sweet noted flavors. 4.0

    Overall:
This is a solid light and easy English Mild Ale, brewed to style, bursting with flavor, very pleasurable drinking. Not sure how long this brewery has been around, but will be on the lookout for more of their offerings. 4.0

I received another great box of beer a few days ago from @Victory_Sabre1973 as part of the ongoing NBS BIF #13 madness. As is typical, I'll try and enjoy the IPAs first. This one is Strictly Illegal, a Triple IPA from Lupulin Brewing.
Amber in color. Opaque without being hazy. Head was a little less than what I expected, some of which may be due to the high (11%) ABV. A really nice thin layer & ring remained long after the pour. Aroma is bright and tropical. While it doesn't come out of the glass in waves, up close it smells really nice. On the tongue, pine flavors overtake the floral notes from the nose. You can tell this packs a punch, but without the booze overwhelming the palate. Goes down quite smoothly for the ABV. Gets better with each sip.

Thanks, James for sending this my way. I'm not generally a big IPA guy, but I'm really enjoying this one. These big IPAs can be hit or miss for me, but this one is a hit.
