Cloudwater - I've Forgot My Name

Double New England IPA with Sabro and Motueka hops, from England (8%).

Pours a hazy, milky orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells intensely of light biscuity malt and tropical, citrus hops, with notes of coconut and lime, as well as some herbal, minty accents.

Taste is an excellent balance of light biscuity malt and fruity, juicy, slighty herbal hops, with quite vibrant tropical and citrus notes of coconut, lime and orange, with some light accents of mint and lemongrass as well. Finishes with a light bitterness and some coconut, lime and minty accents lingering in the aftertaste. Soft, pillowy mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

While I'm not actually a huge fan of Sabro hops and those coconut notes, I think that the Motueka is a great pairing here, for that "lime in the coconut" feel. It also really needs to be said that the sheer intensity and vibracy of the hop aromatics is absolutely amazing here, with those coconut and lime notes of Sabro and Motueka really standing out incredibly expressive and well-defined, without a hint of booziness or overripe feel to this, while the mouthfeel is quite soft and pillowy as well.

Overall, there is a great balance of sweet coconut and quite zesty lime to this, with some light herbal accents making things a little bit more interesting as well. An outstanding beer from one of the top makers of the style in the world right now, that really hammered home just how amazing Cloudwater are once again to me.

To be fair, I had this new beer on tap at the brewery a few hours ago. But I liked it so much I got a 4pk to bring home and write up a proper review...so let’s go!

“eine kleine Biermusik”, a Kölsh from Weathered Ground Brewery, Cool Ridge, WV.

Poued at 50°, the beer is a crystal clear pale gold; foamy white head; streaming carbonation; good cap retention; heavy ring and lacing. Spicy hop nose with some floral notes. Baked bread, biscuits and honey, crackery malt; light spicy hops. Clean crisp feel; light body; dry finish. Overall an excellent Kölsch with a long bready malt linger; quite enjoyable.

    Wander Beyond - Scoop

Triple Black Milkshake IPA with cocoa nips, peppermint tea, vanilla and lactose, from England (11%).

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a medium, creamy, lasting head, leaving some thick lacing on the inside of the glass as it slowly recedes. Really does smell just like After Eights, with some lightly roasted, caramelly malt and distinct milk chocolate and peppermint notes, with just a hint of vanilla as well.

Taste is a great balance of lighlty roasted, caramel malt and mildly fruity and resinous hops, with some citrus and pine accents, but dominated by the milk chocolate and peppermint notes, with just a hint of vanilla as well. Finishes rather sweet, with some milk chocolate, peppermint and citrus accents lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and medium carbonation.

While I'm really not a huge fan of milkshake/pastry beers at all, I bought this because it's a Black MIlkshake IPA and while it is a bit too sweet for my personal taste, I did enjoy it well enough for that quite distinct After Eight feel it's got to it. There are some light hints of a Black IPA to this, with some lightly roasted malt and mild citrus, piney hops, but the pastry aspect really is a lot more obvious here, with those sweet chocolate and lighter vanilla and lactose notes being quite distinct, although the peppermint really provides a very good balance here that counters that sweetness nicely.

Overall, I think this makes for an interesting cross between a Black and Milkshake IPA that is very well-balanced for what it is, despite being a bit too sweet for my personal taste.

A very nice, warm day here today. We enjoyed a bit of old style normalcy today and went to Whole Foods for the first time in 18 months of so. We are both fully vaccinated, numbers right now are pretty low. It was nice to do something we used to enjoy every three weeks. The resulting burgers on the grill were pretty tasty, too.

To wash it down, we have:

Jacks Abby Ray Catcher brewed with lemon grass. If I was better with the camera, you could read the print on the coffee bag behind. Burnished gold, and the white soap bubble head more or less disappeared while I took the pic.

The smell is very light lemon, slightly floral, and guess what... Pilsner malt. Clean and crisp. Slight honey smell.

The taste is very nicely rounded between the slightly sweet malt and just enough lemon to liven things up. A little spicy hit that I don't get on the nose. A bit earthy from the lemongrass, I assume, and just a bit of honey sweetness.

It seems a bit thick, but it is drying with a building citrus tingle on the aftertaste. Not super - carbonated.

Overall, a very nice, clean, tasty brew. Everything contributes to the whole. Another nice lager from Jacks Abby just in time for summer. Feeling this one is just under a four...good and tasty, certainly above average.

Howdy all, a sunny Saturday here in the Fourth Corner. Ticking off a beer I grabbed a couple days ago at the local Europa market, Zlatni Medvjed, The Golden Bear, by Medvedgrad Brewery from Croatia. Might be my first Croatia tick, might not be, but t he beer is good, and only $3.60 for 16.9oz bottle, a good value brew:

Hey! You never know 'til you try it!!

    16 oz. can.
    Just over a week old.
Brewed and packed at von Trapp Brewing.

Moderate pour yields a 6/4 inch white head over an ever so slightly hazy light golden body with some lacing. Nose has noticeable hop aromas and slight cracker malt with a bit of floral/herbal thing going on as well. Flavors have a real nice hop bitterness while finishes nice and dry. Nice feel and overall, a great little Bohemian Pilsner and would certainly recommend.
Cheers to Upper Pass Beer Co. crew and von Trapp Brewing for their hopspitality!

When life gives you lemons make...a hefeweisse?
Lemon Hef from Hamburg brewery, new to me and to the database.
This beer isn't mentioned on their website (canned on 05/02/21, maybe they just haven't had time to update yet) and the only information on the can is that this is a 5.5% wheat ale with lemon.
I haven't had their regular hefe so I can't speak to the base beer, which is just as well since you can't taste it.
Lemon Hef looks a very nice lemony grapefruit yellow with a tall white foamy head, which slowly dissolves into a film, and an aroma of lemon peel and oils, along with some bread dough and clover.
The flavor is lemon all of the way. I'll give credit that it is a natural lemon taste not an artificial lemon drop flavor. You get a hint of a hefeweizen, but nothing you can put your finger on.

Lemon Hef fits the bill if you are looking for a lemonade substitute on a summer day, but falls short if you are looking for a wheat beer with a bit of lemon, mainly because you can't taste any of the hefeweizen.

Founders Mas Agave Clasica Prickly Pear

    Some notes:
    • I am a fan of sour beers/Gose and have yet to come across one that I didn't like.
    • I am a fan of Tequila.
    • I love this beer and have had the Lime and Grapefruit versions, both good but between those two I will choose the Lime.
    • The beer finder is accurate but not that accurate (although it may need a few days to catch up or something, was surprised to come across this today); I was searching for this beer once I had learned about this variant this year and it consistently showed none in my area (but was right on the money with the Lime and the Grapefruit).
    • I have a feeling that they may have ordered this because of me, as I had inquired and they said that they didn't even know about it. I had said well if you order it just know that I will be buying at least one four pack and now here they are. I noticed that I was buying the third to last pack of this variant on the shelf so others must be interested also.
Pours a beautiful reddish/ruby color with a large head. The nose is Tequila, slight barrel, prickly pear. The taste is very complex and at first I get Tequila which quickly rolls into sweet from the prickly pear and a hint of barrel underneath it all; but it does not end sweetly and ends very balanced and even a little dry, excellent drink-ability and goes down dangerously easily for 9.7%. The Agave and sea salt are there but just barely and nothing like the lime version (at least the last time I had it, may pick up some this year too). In one word excellent and if this is your thing I highly recommend. Bottled on 03/25/21.

Dark, golden amber body, excellent clarity; lively, coarse cabonation; thin, soapy head, very sparse yet lasting. Very nice roasted grain scent with a touch of herbal spiciness. Excellent toasted grain taste; mild sweetness and hop bitterness. Medium body; warm with a dusting of dryness.

The looks and mouthfeel are weak but the aroma and taste hit the spot.

    ------------

My third new beer today the first posted.

Mrs. BeerGoot and I went to Castle Rock to meet up with my brother-in-law and sister-in-law. We met at the Rockyard brewery (where I had to new beers - I'll post about those later this evening).

This evening is rather quiet and cool, the area surrounded with thunderstorms but nothing severe around us. I'm heading to a neighbors to paste up service rifle targets for a planned shoot tomorrow, but if the range road is wet and thick with clay-ish mud, I won't shoot. Still, the day has been productive and good, especially on the beer front...

Workhorse Brewing Company Golden Lager (Munich-style Helles)
    • 16 oz can, 5%, canned on 04/19/21.
    • I'm a big fan of Lagers, particularly Helles. I have had many and will gladly drink one anytime.
    • This is a local brewery and I have enjoyed much of what I have had from them. Thankfully they continue to brew more of the traditional styles like Vienna Lager, Baltic Porter...
Pours a wonderful clear golden color, moderate carbonation, decent head and nice lacing. Smell is the typical Lager (Lager lovers will know what I mean here). The taste is... nice. Crisp, a touch sweet but then boom, suddenly ends dry and begs you to take another sip. This is well done and a great Helles beers, as it doesn't venture into the too sweet territory. A great summer beer and a lime and a pinch of sea salt would definitely fit right into this on a hot day if you so desired.

Very hazy pineapple color with a dense bone white head. Citrus aromas are prominent on the nose, especially juicy ripe oranges and passion fruit. There’s also an earthy, vegetal aroma and a sweet oat aroma as well. Other than that, this beer has nothing going on.

The citrus flavors are forward on the taste and very dank, but I really enjoy the earthy vegetal flavor, which really works well with the citrus and the sweetness from the oats. Large mouthfeel for a large beer, this is exceptionally well done, IMHO.

Somewhat local (~100 miles from me) lager masters Chuckanut made a doppelbock, and I was excited because I recently spent a week focusing on doppelbocks and sad because I didn't think I'd ever find it. They have a small footprint. However, I ran across a bottle at a fancy grocery store in a fancy neighborhood and couldn't resist it!

500ml bottle served in a big snifter. If there's a date, I don't see it. Bought it a few days ago at the Metropolitan Market on Mercer Island.

Pours a very dark brown-red color with a big fluffy head that collapses to a dense, centimeter thick cap with thick, curvaceous lacing crawling up the sides of the glass. Smell is light toffee, very clear lager yeast, light aroma of dark fruits, definitely some oak.

Taste is strong on the dates and raisins, but somehow in a refreshing way. Pumpernickel or sticky toffee pudding (molasses, dates), maybe a hint of chocolate. Yeasty/breadiness.

Mouthfeel is surprisingly light and smooth. Overall, I like it a lot.

    Sierra Nevada - Barrel-Aged Narwhal.

Bourbon Barrel-Aged Russian Imperial Stout, from America (11.9%).

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a large, creamy, lasting head. Smells of slightly roasted, caramel malt, milk chocolate, dark fruit and vanilla, with hints of bourbon-soaked oak as well.

Taste is a great balance of slightly roasted, quite caramelly malt, milk chocolate, dark fruit, with notes of raisin, fig, plum and coconut, as well as lighter coffee, licorice and charred, bourbon-soaked oak. Finishes rather sweet, with a very light bitterness and some lightly roasted malt, chocolate and dark fruit lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and light/medium carbonation.

Narwhal is one of my favorite Russian Imperial Stouts, so I was really looking forward to this, although it left me slightly disappointed, to be honest. This may well be due to unrealistic expectations and this still makes for a very enjoyable BA RIS, although the barrel aging doesn't feel all that rich here, mainly accentuating the sweeter and boozy notes rather than adding a great deal of complexity and richness of character, which doesn't really take away from the impressive complexity that there already is to the base beer though.

Overall, the barrel-aging just turned this a bit too sweet and boozy for my personal liking, while taking away from the a bit more roasted and bitter character of the base beer, while the distinct milk chocolate and dark fruit still shows through very nicely here.

As soon as I popped the tab I could smell the toffee but once in the glass and starting to warm the coffee comes to the fore and a bit of vanilla and chocolate combined with the malts. Taste echoes the smell but richer and fuller. Plus the coffee bitterness makes itself evident. No alcohol burn. Mouthfeel was thinner than expected but not really a negative at all.

    Another good local imperial stout.

Ludlam Island Brewing in Cape May County, NJ has really stepped up its game and has been brewing some excellent beer. This is one of them: The Big Dirty, a DIPA hopped with Simcoe, Mosaic, and Citra Lupulin powder. It pours a murky, dirty tangerine color with a large, fluffy, eggshell-colored head and thick lacing. The smell is strong and tropical with lemon, orange, tangerine, pineapple, and floral hops. The taste is outstanding with a balance of tart, bitter lemon, melon, pineapple, resinous pine, bubblegum, and hoppy bitterness with earthy, herbal notes. It's dank and sticky. The mouth feel is outstanding - thick and creamy with moderate carbonation. And the 9% ABV is well masked. Overall, The Big Dirty is an outstanding DIPA. It's very well balanced and thoroughly enjoyable. I will buy this whenever it is released. My review is only the second and the first since 2019. I suspect this batch is a better than those previously.

12oz can stamped BATCH #021 poured into a Spiegelau stout glass at just above fridge temp 13% ABV. The beer pours impenetrable black with abundant medium brown colored head. The head recedes to a thin cap and leaves a little lacing. The aroma is mild with molasses and dark sugar. The taste follows with bittersweet molasses, dark chocolate and roasty miderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium plus bodied with a little less than medium carbonation and a mostly dry finish. No sign of the ABV in the taste or aroma. Overall, very good. The range of flavors is limited and focused mostly on molasses, but it's done very well.

Glad I bought this one. Nice stout. Cheers all and enjoy the new beer in your glass this weekend!
