Good morning, Weekenders! I've got a pair of Transient porters to review today: It's All Relative, the base beer and the vanilla variant. I'm most excited for the vanilla version, but I figured it's most appropriate to start with the base beer.

Despite having had these bottles for a few weeks now, no one else has reviewed this one - so it looks like I'll be shooting a perfect 0.00 rDev.

We have only started to get Transient stouts and porters, in addition to the hazies and sours we've been getting for a while ("locally," at any rate; actual locally, hahahahahahahaha no of course we don't get Transient, we barely get good beer from Atlanta here in rural SE GA). I was hoping to see some of the insanely good BA stuff I've received from the likes of @ovaltine at some point, but it seems I'll be moving before that level of distro reaches us. Ah well.

Pours thick and viscous, implying a creamy, rich sweetness more in line with an imperial stout (if one chooses to draw a distinction between what you expect between a porter or a stout, which is a dangerous game).

The nose quickly dispels that notion: this is almost brightly toasty and robust. On the palate, both the nose and the appearance share space: it's thick, rich, and creamy, but still very toasty, with a sharply bitter back third. Notes include espresso, toast, very light char, cream, blackstrap molasses, red grape, toffee, rye bread, and a "green" aspect to the hoppy bitterness that is hard to describe (bark? pine?).

This is a really good imperial porter; excellent, really. However, I'd take Everett and King Titus over this one any day of the week, and both of those manage a more expressive and clean flavor profile at a much lower ABV (7.5% for each, coincidentally).

I’m drinking a new to me beer from @DoctorZombies
    [IMG]

Poured from a can dated 10/20/20

Appearance is jet black with a foamy tan head, quickly dissipated to faint lacing and a small island of a cap
Aroma is strong maple syrup, a hint of ginger, vanilla and a tick of honey and alcohol
Taste is amazing, by the smell I though it would be sweet but it is pretty dry, it literally tastes like pancakes with syrup on them. Ginger bread cookie and faint honey also come through
Mouthy is full and layered predominately maple syrup and prickly on the tongue. Medium carbonation, dry roasted lingering in the tongue. No noticeable alcohol burn
Overall I loved it, not sweet and not too bitter, nicely balanced and tasty. One caution, it is not a sipper and the 9.2 abv creeps up on you. Good stout. Thanks Dave

New Beer #2: Flamingo Fruit Flight, a "tart ale with passionfruit and lime."

Summary: this is light and refreshing, a really nice beer for Summer - but that's about it.

The passionfruit is really missing; the lime is a fairly nice complement to the overall profile. It isn't particularly tart, despite the advertising; rather, it's a bit musty and grainy.

I would describe it more, but there isn't much more to describe. It's a tasty enough beer, but it's really just not that amazing.

Wow, double digit -rDev! That's a surprise, to be sure, but I stand by it.

    Good Sunday morning!
I'm sitting around, trying not to look too lazy, and enjoying this beer from Modern Times. This is Electrojet, one of their hazy IPA series. It was canned 04/16/21 and has an ABV of 6.8%.
A hazy gold color. Fluffy white head that leaves some sticky lace.
Lots of fruit in the aroma. Citrus, tropical, peach.
Taste of peach, grapefruit, orange, and mango.
    Nicely bitter, good mouthfeel.

    Prairie Cherry Bomb!

12oz bottled 04/22/2021 poured into a Spiegelau stout glass after warming 25 minutes from the fridge. My bottle label says 11.5% ABV. The beer pours dense black with brown colored head. The head builds on a hard pour, but recedes to a pencil thin ring and leaves no lacing. The aroma is moderate in strength featuring maraschino cherry, coffee, cocoa and vanilla. The flavor is semisweet with the sweet cherry leading the way before the chocolate, coffee, vanilla and pepper get to have their time. Mild bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium plus bodied with less than medium carbonation and a somewhat dry finish. No sign of the ABV in the taste or aroma. Overall, very good. There's a lot going on here and the balance and complexity are commendable. The use of sweet cherry as opposed to sour is a first for me in a beer, and really steers this version of Bomb! in a different direction.

I'm glad I picked this one up. I've been reviewing less this year and trying to buy and drink only what I like.

Cheers all and enjoy your Sunday!

After a couple weekends with actual social plans capped by a fun day spent with family yesterday, happy to have a lazy Sunday, Started it re-watching the OT win by the Caps last night in game one of the playoffs. Continuing now watching the Virginia Cavaliers start the defense of their NCAA lacrosse championship. Bryant is hanging around early.

A slow Sunday calls for what may be deemed a slow start, but one I have been looking forward to. It is not a beer I expect to blow me away with something new in beer, quite the opposite. It is a beer I think might evoke nostalgia to some, though this is my first run with it. A local brewer made a cream ale with a name that referenced this beer, and it was decent enough that I wanted to try the "real thing" - so here is Gennessee Cream Ale:

Very clear light golden with a nice top of white foam. The bubbles kept the top of the beer covered even after I started analyzing the next categories of smell and taste. They play into the feel as I get to the latter component where a nice amount of carbonation provides some interest and helps to clean up the beer after each sip.

Smell does have a bit of corn, but I am also getting some mineral and dry grass hop notes. There's a very light hint of red apple skins as well. There's an interesting mix of sweet and husk-like to dry grass bitterness when I take a sip. The sweetness surrounds the sides of my tongue while the carbonation seems to scrub it from the middle. This washing appears to give the (light and dry grass/herb) hops a place to take hold.

This is not a very bitter beer, but it is a bit more balanced than I expected. It has a bit more character than the Paceña I reviewed about a month ago (and unfortunately have no more to use in a comparison). I mention that beer as it is one I felt held just a little bit more than a simple, inoffensive beer. Genny Cream Ale goes beyond this to be refreshing and even somewhat tasty. I think a comparison to Narragansett might be worth a try, so expect to see one in the near future.

12 oz can, canned 3/22/21. Pours a slightly murky copper color, creamy white head.

Nose includes orange peel, citrus and mild spruce.

Hop profile of citrus and spruce notes are prevalent, the toasty malt behind it all rounds everything out. Hops come through in the finish, lingering a bit in the aftertaste in a pleasing way. It may border on IPA by some opinions but either way you look at it, it’s very good.

I’m usually very cautious of “world class” ratings, but this is definitely worthy of its rating and reputation. I don’t have any white whale beers anymore, but I’ve wanted to try this for quite some time. It’s never been available near me until now, and I hope it’s here to stay. Can’t wait to try Dreadnaught.

You seemed to dislike it more than I, but I agree the fruit was a little over done, specifically when combined with the more bitter notes.

I think this is basically what I got from this beer - it is a dessert beer, but not an overly sweet one. It seemed to nicely straddles sweet adjunct/additions and base imperial stout.

Of the 3 Floyds that I have had, I have enjoyed Alpha King the most. I actually have a new one in the fridge now; we'll see if I find time for it today.

Cheers to all you new beer reviewers!

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz Nordic pint glass canned on 4/19/21. Pours a cloudy orange yellow with a 2 finger sticky white head that leaves thick streaks of lace with nice retention. 4

Aroma slightly dank marijuana, mandarin, passionfruit, apricot, pine, and grapefruit rind. 4

Taste follows marijuana, mandarin, passionfruit, apricot, pine, and a pretty aggressive hit of grapefruit. 4

Mouthfeel is a big medium, a tad sticky not dry, more carbonation than what is true to the style, and at 8% easy enough going down. 4

Overall not my favorite from them, but still pretty good. Worth a go, especially if you like old school bitter DIPAs. 4

    Good afternoon all!

Finally had some time to jump back in and participate in whats become my favorite thread here on BA. Right now I am drinking Fox Farm - The Cottage a helles lager that checks in at 5.2%
    [IMG]

Pours a mostly clear, but not quite crystal clear golden color. Thin sudsy white head forms on the beer before mostly dissipating. Aroma has notes of light bready malts, sweet grains, lemon grass, hay, and some subtle sweetness.

Taste follows the nose with notes of bready malts, dried hay and light grainy notes. Just a touch of sweetness giving way to a dried grassy, slightly lemony hop note on the back end. Feel is medium bodied, crisp, with a dry finish. Moderate carbonation. Dry finish.

Overall a solid helles lager from Fox Farm.

About to head out for the nephew's birthday party, but I'll be back this evening with a couple more.

Greetings fellow NBSers! A sunny, warm spring day here in the Fourth Corner. One of the local breweries gave out hop rhizomes for their anniversary back in the beginning of April, and I got one. I'm not much on growing things, but figured I'd give it a shot. I didn't get them into dirt until late April, and missed an early warm stretch. Well, now I've got a couple bines that over a foot high, and a couple new shoots just popping out. Not expecting much this year, but as long as I don't kill them, I'll be satisfied.

My first entry today comes from a regional favorite of mine Silver City Brewing, over in Silverdale WA, on the south end of the Puget Sound and Olympic Peninsula, Sonic Reign . Called an APA by the brewery, it's a bit cloudy hazy for that, IMHO, and is more evidence of why we need a NEPA category. It's a nice little brew though:

My wife ran a dog adoption event this weekend. The rescue org was from GA and they brought quite a bit of beer with them. My wife was nice enough to reserve the few she could for me before all the volunteers drank it.
First up, G.P.A. from Akademia Brewing out of Athens.
This is a Pale Ale clocking in at 5.5%. Label lists the hop bill as Cascade, Centennial, Chinook and Simcoe.

Poured from a 12 oz can stamped "CANNED ON 03/11/21" to a Nonic at Fridge temp.
A not quite clear amber body sits below an impressive white head of multi-size bubbles. Head fades quickly to a ring and lacing is minimal though.
Aroma is reserved but this is clearly an old school pale ale.
Taste proves my theory. Nice bitter hop bite.
Mouthfeel has a hint of hop oil but it is cleaned by a decent carbonation.
Overall, I would buy this beer regularly if I could.

So I've had this a couple of times now, and am ready. Don't expect a lot of verbiage in each category as I struggled with this one. It's just... different and hard to rate for any category.

TRVE's Buried Sun (French-style farmhouse ale). 5.7% can canned in early April (I think).

    4.1/5 rDev +6.5%
    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

This is a pretty tough beer to describe for a so-called "French style farmhouse" ale. It has a golden amber appearance, prickly head, the color, the smell of a lager.
But then.. but then... you sip, and the farmhouse tart aspect bites. It's beguiling and mystifying. A sour lager-like ale. One of the more interesting beers that TRVE brews (along with Ostara, and their Grisette that appears once in a while).
Nicely done. I can't really comment and break it all down to the individual traits as it is really hard to compare. Decent carbonation, no complaints here.
But again, TRVE brings the category-shattering thunder.

Pours a nice amber color. Fairly clear looking. Nice, beautiful 1 finger white head. Looks silky, and fluffy. The retention is quite good. The head as it dissipates clings to the side of the glass like glue.
The aroma is dominated by hops. Tropical aroma to them.
Taste, like expected: hop dominant. I get a good mixture of tropical as well as a bit of pine.
The body is sticky, and full.
    Tasty well made IPA.

Good Sunday afternoon, New Beer Samplers and commentators. We had a most enjoyable weekend a the Shore with our daughter who is visiting from North Carolina. She returns home tomorrow but she's looking forward to raiding my stache of Heady Topper tonight. It's really great to spend time with her! I drove up earlier today to cut the lawn before it rains and suffered an allergy attack so rather than sitting outside I've retreated to the cool, dry bar in the cellar.

One of the beers I received from @Roguer in his enormous second box is Tritonia, a Gose brewed by Creature Comforts. It caught my eye immediately because it's a cucumber-lime Gose and those are two things I love. And the brewer has done an excellent job in using them. It's highly flavorful and is like drinking a salad. I really like it. Thank you, Andrew!

Poured into a Pilsner glass. It pours a pale, golden-straw color with a large, foamy, bright white cap and thick, soapy lacing. The first smell I notice is fresh cucumber - very salad-like. There is lime in the background along with wheat cracker and floral herbal aromas. I think the smell is unique and quite pleasant. The cucumber is front and center in the taste but blends really well with the lime and salt. It's not overly sour - more tart. The taste is very clean and refreshing. Its mouth feel is lite and crisp with a pleasant level of carbonation and you barely notice the 4.5% ABV. Overall, while I rarely drink Goses, I like Tritonia a lot. It happens that I really like both cucumber and lime and Creature Comforts has used them to excellent effect. If CC distributed this to New Jersey, it would be part of my summer rotation.

Poured from an undated 12oz can to a Nonic at fridge temp.
Pours hazy gold with some floaties bouncing around. A non-aggressive pour almost yielded a head over-flow of puffy beige. Lacing is decent and the head lasts, though I did have to gradually refill once because of the over-flow pause.
    Aroma is piney and hoppy.
Taste has a nice dry bitterness. Pine is prominent. Can says citrus and pine, but I think the citrus is drowned out on this one.
    Mouthfeel is medium.
Overall, not bad. Loving the bitterness.
