Yesterday I visited a delightful new brewery in Brooklyn called Wild East Brewing. Great variety of styles ranging from traditional European and trending American.
I drank and took notes on a very tasty 4.5% ABV called Tour de Table. On the menu below, one can note that it is grouped with the Farmhouse section. https://wild-east-brewing-to-go.square.site/s/order?location=11ea33edbd745a7aa76c0cc47a2b1e8c&customer_seat_id=11eb35b3a968110ca6070ad366fbef9b

ince I want to add and review this beer, I’m wondering under what style I can categorize it? It is simply described as a hoppy table beer, which is not a listed style on BA. My inclination is to simply call it a Saison. However, I once reviewed a table beer from Allagash that was listed as a Belgian Pale Ale on BA. Thoughts? Saison or BPA? Should table beer have its own style?

You could call or email the brewery and ask them. Then there's no confusion possible.

I guess I would just use personal judgement here and put it where you think it goes based on your tasting notes. That's what I would do at least.

A table beer is basically a low abv Saison, which is kind of a catch all style to begin with, but its not a science. If a brewery specifically calls it out as a table Belgian Pale Ale, then yeah go with that. Otherwise, since you noted the brewery lists it under the "Farmhouse" section that would add more weight to the Saison style IMO. I would add in the text of your review that it could possibly be another style like Belgian Pale Ale, but as its a bit murky, I would say Saison is the best option.

I agree that Farmhouse - Saison is where it should be. (There is no hint in your description or on the brewery's beer menu that this is a sour beer, but that's one characteristic that should trump all others and be the guidance for any style designation.)

Sounds like a session Belgian pale ales to me...

Probably won't be helpful, but for comparison purposes, I happened to be drinking Wild East Tour de Table last night right after Threes Table Beer which is marked as Saison. These two beers have very little in common with Threes one being just a sour light beer, while Wild East one being somewhere in between Belgian pale ale and a very light NEIPA.

I would say that saison is really going to be the spot to put it. The above linked brew from TRVE is a table beer as well, but it is not aggressively hopped and derives its flavors primarily from fermentation. Now that I'm posting this I'm afraid I'm no help at all.

    @Gajo74

Would agree with those above who said Farmhouse Ale - Saison as the style category.

It was definitely not sour. The aroma was earthy, grassy and tea like. In contrast, the taste had more fruity notes and somewhat hops forward. Overall it was light drinking and refreshing and definitely had a Belgian feel to it. I’m leaning towards Saison.

Interesting that you mentioned NEIPA. For me it’s definitely not an IPA, however, it was well hopped with Motueka, and those flavors definitely added some juicy qualities.

That sounds exactly like a Saison to me, most sour Saisons are more an American thing than a Belgian thing.

Also keep in mind you can have hoppy saisons.

Yeah, Motueka is the one to blame. It reminded me of the Other Half Motueka Daydream, which is a NEIPA.

I love that one!! FYI, Other Half has a new location at Domino Park, Williamsburg. Definitely nicer location with bridge and waterfront views.

In the past when I've had a question about a beer's identity I called the brewer and used their description. Admittedly, that's not very scientific and there may be some marketspeak or pride of ownership in their answer but I follow the "tis a little thing but tis mine own" dictum.

I think the brewery has already classified it, to the extent they’re going to, as a “hoppy table beer.” But I suppose no harm in asking.

I would put it in Farmhouse Ale-Saison.

I agree with @Squire if you have time and mention you are logging their beer for first time into the Beer Advocate Website, I’m sure they would be more than happy to provide constructive feedback if you are talking to someone in ownership of the brewery at least.

Table beer is a super broad category that seems to basically mean a Belgian inspired beer (could be inspired by any of the brewing traditions of Belgium it seems) that is low abv. The one local brewer that makes one lists it on their menu as a "Belgian single"
