Holla @jonphisher for this brew, that goes well with the latest Atmospheric River flowing through the Fourth Corner. We're supposed to get some more flooding, but not as bad as a couple weeks ago. The folks in the lowlands out in the county are prepping for the worst though.

The beer I'm having is, as discussed above by Jon and @JackHorzempa , Yards Long Jawns Winter Lager. As noted by Jack, as is true of many American versions, it's a touch heavy on the roast, but that gives it a dry finish:

That one wasn't for me (they poured me a couple ounces to try). I like/love peanut butter, like Eugene, but PB porters/stouts are just not my style, so I wasn't surprised. My primary question to GOAT Bartender Serena was did this replace coffee, since it was released the same time as coffee was last year. She wasn't 100% sure, but was pretty sure Eugene Coffee is returning in December or January.

In addition to the final two Deep Woods Releases, I will make two additional trips to bring back Coffee Eugene and A Little Crazy. And then Repo Man, a Rye Ale, returns next Wednesday, so yeah, there will be beer purchased in December and January. I guess I outed myself as a fan of my favorite Chicago Brewery (though Spiteful is right there as well).

Glad you enjoyed it and that they continue to send their beers to you in Ohio!

Happy weekend, NBW, although I haven't worked since Wednesday so it feels like day three already.

My first of this style, Deus, from Brouwerij Bosteels. Been eyeing the bottle every time I see it, and always thought it was awfully expensive for a style I have no idea if I like. Then I stopped seeing it at on the shelf a couple years ago, and bought it when I had the chance last week.

750ml corked/caged bottle served in a slightly tulippy stemmed glass. Cuvee Prestige 2017.

Pours clear, very light copper, big head, TONS of carbonation, sustaining a large head and clearly visible from a distance. Smell is mostly funky / yeasty, maybe some grape must, maybe some peach.

Taste is in the same theme, but not the same balance. Definitely some funk, but a candy sweetness offsets it. Definitely some yeastiness, but twisted a little toward earthiness. I think the peach stands up and maybe is a little accentuated.

Mouthfeel is, of course, light, dry, and exceedingly effervescent. Overall...this is the only beer of the style that I've had so I cannot profess that it's great or terrible relative to the style, but it is a clean, interesting, and very tasty beer that is quite different than the many others I have tried.

Brewers notes: Notes: Brisk is our German-style Märzenbier conditioned in oak until perfectly softened. Brewed with German Pilsner, Munich, Cara Munich, and Vienna malts, it is fermented cool with a traditional Märzen yeast and then transferred to our horizontal oak lagering tank for extended refinement and conditioning.

With softened noble hop character, accentuated malts, and the ever-so-gentle kiss of American oak, Brisk is crisp, refreshing, and hugely characterful — a triumphant transmutation of Whisper.

Clear copper liquid , capped by a three finger off white fluffy foam cap, striated lacings , settles to a pencil thick layer after 5 minutes

Aroma is malty, bready, toasty, slight sweetness

Taste is malty, bready , Oakley, slight spiciness at the finish,

Good sudsing, clean crisp, gentle hop finish

    Good beer

Thanks to @SawDog505 for kicking things off on this holiday weekend! I'm still up in Canada having fun with family. Grabbed this one today from a local shop. Pick Me Up, an imperial tiramisu stout with milk sugar. Brewed by Eighty-Eight Brewing in Calgary. Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours a nice black with light brown head. Very carbonated. Head sticks around for a minute or two.

Nose is coffee, cherries, dark chocolate, lactose, toffee, and a bit of marshmallow. A nice roasted malt note starts to pick up steam as it warms a bit. Oak and leather. Getting a slight red wine note as well.

Taste is really nice. A definitely impact of both sweet and bitter. Sweet candy and toffee mixed with a heavy roasted malt flavor. Woody and earthy. Vanilla is there, but the bitterness overpowers it a bit. Coffee grounds, a touch of black licorice, molasses, and dark chocolate. A really nicely balanced beer.

Mouthfeel is medium-bodied. As far as imperial stouts go, it's a bit on the thinner side. This one is easy drinking and a really great beer. Nicely done!

Suncreek Brewing Bear Boozled BBA RIS

    2021, 3rd anniversary bottling. Released September 18, 2021.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Snörkel tulip.
Dark brown to almost black body, lovely latte khaki colored head.
Aromas of vanilla, roasted malt, dark fruits.
Taste is dark drown sugar, bourbon, vanilla and dark unsweetened chocolate.
Mouthfeel is a little thin for what I typically think of for and RIS. There's a nice lingering of flavors. Alcohol is hidden very well.
Overall, a decently done BBA RIS for a 2nd year in a row. Really easy to drink and the bourbon is not overpowering at all.

    Cheers!

    Pühaste - Muhe

American IPA with Cashmere, Enigma and Mosaic hops, from Estonia (5.5%).

Pours a cloudy, golden amber coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of biscuity malt and tropical/citrus/berry hops, with notes of pineapple, grapefruit and white grape, as well as a certain herbal, woody note.

Taste is a great balance of biscuity malt and fruity, floral, herbal, woody hops, with tropical, citrus and berry notes of pineapple, coconut, grapefruit and white grape, with just a hint of red berries and some rather herbal and woody accents as well, reminiscent of cedar wood. Finishes with a light/medium bitterness and some pineapple, grapefruit, white grape and cedar wood lingering in the aftertaste.

I think this makes for quite an interesting combination of hop varieties and an equally interesting, unusual flavor profile. It takes a little getting used to, but personally I really liked the distinct herbal and woody notes here, which work well in combination with the tropical and berry notes. While it may all sound a little weird, I can rather appreciate an odd flavor profile like this when it works out so well.

The Cashmere really comes out great here with those quite herbal and woody notes that I often get from it and it's really nice to taste some Enigma again as well with that distinct white grape note, while Mosaic ties everything together here. Overall, this makes for an unusual, but rather enjoyable IPA that is a little different, which I can always appreciate.

Howdy, and yeah it's been a while, but I thought I'd double-log this beer today now that I have something to say.... if you're confused by my review, then welcome to the club. Still trying to sort out how I really feel about this beer but I'm enjoying (more than I should?).

L - What in the amber waves of grain? Look, an old school dark colored, see through IPA! Holy smokes. Lacing good, head OK.

S - More malt where that came from... like a 2Hearted Decoy meeting a hoppier version of SN Celebration in a late night bar, and something actually good came out of it. Smells like caramel, malted barley, light whiff of lemon (wtf?), and some very old school hop resin smell. What year is this?

T - More nostalgia on the palate for IPA lovers of the 2000-2010 window - just solid malt backbone with enough hops for balance. They were calling this a winter IPA, now I get it. Like a hoppier amber but with more old school IPA character. I dig it.

F - Good on the palate; amazing balance, wouldn't know it's 6.8%. Really good mouthfeel although nothing stands out, and it's crispy and dry for days. Nice.

O - I'm surprised by this one; thought I would be disappointed, but NOPE. Reminds me of somewhere between SN Celebration and HA's own Space house IPA (r.i.p. Lincoln). Cheers

I have been waiting patiently for its release. Hopefully Serena is correct. If not, this one will tide me over though it has a local equal in Infusion A which I have had in can and on tap.

If you see Coffee Eugene, please DM. I stumbled across a lone sixer a couple of years ago and loved it.

"Dave's American Dark Malt" One of the Pilot Program series of beers from Athletic. <0.5%ABV, 120 cal, 28 gm carbs, 10 IBU. poured into a modified perfect pint glass. Jet black color. Tall dark tan/light brown head, recedes to about 1/8 inch thick layer of foam that lingers to the end. Almost no lacing. Smells like roasted malt, consistent with the name. Not picking up coffee or chocolate or any spice; just generic dark roasted malt, with maybe a touch of some fresh really dark bread. Taste is exactly the same. Mouthfeel is a nice combo of medium body with moderate carbonation. I'm not getting any weird after taste or vegetal flavors. Overall a nice dark NA beer but not as good as some that have supplemental aromas/tastes like hints of coffee or chocolate that add to the drinking experience. IMO, Athletic's First Ride stout with coffee was a better beer.

12oz bottled 10/25/21 poured into a Spiegelau stout glass at 53° Fahrenheit 15.1% ABV. The beer pours pitch black with zero light penetration and meager medium brown head. The head recedes to pencil thin ring and a few tiny bubbles. The aroma is dark roasted coffee and mild bourbon barrel. The taste is semisweet caramel & roasted malt with pungent coffee and bourbon barrel character. There is a mild ethanol note that is persistent, yet not unexpected. Moderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is oily, medium plus bodied with just less than medium carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, excellent. My only complaint is the ethanol flavor. This could have been a better beer at 12-13%.

Both kids are attending the big game with friends, so Mrs. Jkblr & I have the house to ourselves. Not sure if I'll be back tonight... Cheers all!

    Fuerst Wiacek - Anaconda Harmonica

New England IPA with Galaxy and Amarillo hops, from Germany (8%).

Pours a hazy, dark orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and chalky, herbal hops, with hints of tangerine coming through as well.

Taste is a decent balance of light biscuity malt and fruity, floral, chalky and herbal hops, with faint citrus and tropical notes of tangerine and papaya, as well as an unpleasant, chalky aftertaste. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some tangerine and chalk lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

I have to say that this was quite a disappointment, especially coming from Fuerst Wiacek, as the aroma and flavor profile are really odd and unpleasant here and certainly not what you would expect from the hop varieties used. Actually the Amarillo is pretty recognizeable with those typical, floral and zesty "orange blossom" notes, but there's not a hint of that vibrant passion fruit character that I expect from Galaxy here, with some really unplesant chalky and herbal notes coming through in the aftertaste, while the mouthfeel is not all that great as well.

Overall, this is a rare but total miss from one of Germany's finest NEIPA breweries, not sure what went wrong here, but if I had to guess I'd say low-quality Galaxy hops.

Currently listening to: Radiohead - Riptide.

Alesong - Stonefruit Symphony, "Sour ale aged in oak barrels with peaches and nectarines"

500ml corked/caged bottle served in a little Cantillon glass. Bottle date 03/2021. No idea where I got it from.

Pours a pretty clear pale yellow with a small head that fizzles out quickly, leaving behind a small ring and a moderate amount of fine, slow carbonation. Smell is very tart, lots of nectarine and peach, makes me think of sweet tarts.

Taste is less tart than I was expecting, though still respectably tart. Loses some of the sweet-tartness in favor of barnyard and just pale stonefruit juice.

Mouthfeel is very light, quite dry. Overall, very nice.

I’m also watching the Bucket game, @jkblr, and as an IUB grad circa 1985, I’m not enjoying that portion of my evening, to say the least. This looks like the JV vs the varsity.

I’ll also join our friend @eppCOS and enjoy a new beer from one of my favorite breweries (28 reviews/ratings thanks to a buddy in Chicago who used to hook me up whilst we lived in Minnesota). I’ve been a HUUUUUUUGE Half Acre fan for years, so I’m pumped to try this new offering from Half Acre.

Let’s roll it old school, NBW party patrol!!!

This old school IPA pours a beautiful clear amber color with a dense light tan head that provides maximum lacing. Absolutely gorgeous beer. The nose includes a nice citrus note, LOADS of fresh berries, and a dollop of resiny pine as well as a caramalt note for good measure. Holy old school IPA, Batman.

The citrus and berry flavors are forward on the taste, and lend a fruity flavor to this IPA that works exceptionally well with the pine and caramalt flavors at the back of the palate. Truly delicious beer.

The mouthfeel is medium and drying, as expected for this old school IPA. If you look this beer up in the beer nerd dictionary, there’s a picture of me hoisting a glass of it in the air, because this is my IPA sweet spot.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! It's hard to believe that a year has almost flown by already, and what a year it has been...

I was in South Central PA for the holiday and was gifted with a nice local Helles Lager from Mt. Gretna Brewery: What the Helles Lager. Pours a nice slightly darker yellow with a decent head. Smell is the usual and it's nice and light and crisp. Taste is bready, crisp malts and ends very nicely balanced and is not too sweet at all; this is a solid example of the style. Next time I'm in town I'll be making it a point to try more of their stuff. Prost!
