Have a good NBW. After a busy week it's good to be to the weekend. Had a nice long sleep since 10PM, woke up around 130PM. We are watching South Park since then. We will probably go to Aldi later on for more recipes. I have all my untappd data uploaded and I have been updating the speadsheet, so I will have all my dataset ready by next week if I keep working on it.

Stone Dayfall. I need to go to the Richmond location soon. Best Before 6/25/2021. Lasting rocky head and thick foamy lacing. Awesome wit! Aromas and flavors of big orange peel, pear, apple, coriander, peppercorn, clove, light banana/bubblegum, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast funk/earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, floral, grassy bitterness, peppery yeast spiciness, and light yeast tang/tartness on the finish. Medium-high carbonation, medium body, and fairly crisp finishing. Balanced creamy/bready malts, sticky spice, and light resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Moderate increasing sticky/resin dryness, with no cloying/astringent flavors. Minimal warming 5.5%, very refreshing and spot on witbier, maybe just a little bit more bitter and hoppy that expected, but I loved it. 4.13

Aardwolf Brewing Co. -- Bananas Foster
Quality stout brewed with lactose and natural flavors added
11.0% ABV; pouring temperature: 53 °F; canning data: unknown

    3.86/5 rDev +0.8%
    look: 3.5 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 5 | overall: 3.75

Dark, nearly black body, opaque; thin, wispy light tan head. Nice, prominent initial smell of bananas through the can opening but only the faintest trace when the beer is poured in the glass; chocolate and roasted grain char. Milk chocolate and sweet cocoa flavor; a bit phenolic, medicinal; some grain char bitterness; whiskey undertone. Incredibly thick and silky body; smooth and oily on the palate; excellent residual sugar presence; moderate boozy heat.

I only got a strong presence of the bananas from the can's pull-tab opening and not from the glass, so that is a bit disappointing. Even at 11% ABV, a bigger, longer lasting head would also have been nice. The taste is okay. But the mouthfeel! It's been a long, long time since I've given any indication of a "5" rating, but this beer has it done. Overall, I like the beer, but don't love it.

This is one of two Florida beers from the BeerAdvocate Extreme Beer Box, my third beer and, so far, my least favorite.

    Cloudwater - The Realest

Triple New England IPA with Citra and Mosaic hops, from England (10%).

Pours a hazy, dark orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of biscuity malt and tropical/citrus hops, with notes of orange and papaya, as well as some dank and herbal accents.

Taste is an excellent balance of biscuity malt and fruity, juicy, slightly dank, herbal and resinous hops, with tropical, citrus and lighter berry notes of orange, grapefruit, papaya, lychee and blueberry, as well as some herbal weed and just a hint of pine. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some orange, papaya, lychee and herbal weed lingering in the aftertaste. Soft, pillowy mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

Nobody in Europe does TIPAs like Cloudwater and this is another prime example of that, featuring incredibly vibrant and refined hop characteristics without feeling too sweet or boozy at all. In fact, this has a kind of dry and bitter character to it, with a distinct dankness, hints of pine resin and juicy tropical, citrus and berry notes that really portray Mosaic and Citra in all of their glory, with a great body and mouthfeel as well.

Overall, this makes for a fantastic TIPA that features all of the styles strengths without any of its weaknesses, a big, bold hop bomb without a hint of booze to it.

"DFH Blue Hen in 12 packs is not a bad price."

Please let me know what you think of this beer. Perhaps I am spoiled from all of the high quality/tasty Pilsners brewed in SEPA. If I lived somewhere else I might think more highly of Blue Hen Pilsner?

    Cheers!

I have a sour IPA from a monthly beer mix box. I'll admit up front that I am not a sour lover. Didn't like the funky aroma, but the taste grew on me. No full review, don't think it would be fair.

FedEx has failed me so far today, so no Extreme Beer Box. Still, I've got a few new beers on hand, and @lordofthewiens inspired me to crack this first one.

DuClaw Sour Me Strawberry French Toast

What is this beer? Is it a dessert beer? A sour ale? A fruited sour?

It's kind of all three rolled into one - and, perhaps surprisingly, it's really darn tasty.

The strawberry isn't prominent, although it does grow a bit over the course of a glass. Rather, there's a kind of vague berry-like tartness, going along with a mild vinegar sourness.

But the focus is definitely on the sweet doughy malt expression and the maple syrup, dusted with a restrained amount of nutmeg and cinnamon. The vanilla is complementary.

I didn't really expect to like this one much, but I'm happy to report my pleasant surprise.

Third Moon Some Days it’s Dark, Imperial stout with coffee, chocolate, vanilla beans, hazelnut, lactose, Coffee Crisp candy bar, and the kitchen sink. This is a collaboration between Third Moon of Milton, Ontario and Brasserie Sir John of Lachute, Québec, two breweries I quite like.

Pours a thick deep, dark brown with a fairly significant head that slowly dissipates leaving a light latte film and negligible lacing.

Hazelnut jumps up first in the nose followed by vanilla wafers and sweet milky coffee. As it warms, the distinct aromas of the Coffee Crisp candy bar dominate.

The sip is sweet up front. It is a little hard to find the stout behind the add-junks until the beer warms up a little. Light roasted malts. Vanilla and sweet milky coffee are prominent. The hazelnut peaks through mid sip. This beer isn’t sweet to the point of being unpleasant, but it is sweet. The flavour additions certainly work to hide the 11.5% ABV.

Nice heavy body. Thick. Not syrupy. Negligible carbonation.

I’m losing interest in the pastry stout as a style. I find my current capability tops out at about 1-2 per month. Coffee Crisp is my favourite low end candy bar, so I looked forward to this. The flavours are there to be sure. Worth a try if you like pastry stouts.

Orca Brau / Tilmans Biere - Wer Hat Die Kokosnuss Geklaut

Imperial Black IPA with Sabro hops, coconut flakes and blueberries, from Germany (7.5%).

Pours a deep, dark brown coloration with a small, fluffy head and a lot of chunky floaties. Smells of roasted, slightly caramelly malt and herbal hops, with hints of blueberry as well.

Taste is a good balance of roasted, slightly caramelly malt, some chocolate and blueberry, as well as hints of coconut, licorice and herbal hops. Finishes with a light/medium bitterness and some roasted malt, chocolate and blueberry lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body ands carbonation.

Despite this being brewed with coconut flakes and Sabro hops, there really is very little coconut coming through here at all, which I personally don't really mind, but doesn't really seem to fit the spirit of this beer. The blueberry is more noticeable actually, with a slightly acidic presence, as well as some chocolate, licorice and herbal, bitter hops.

Still, this makes for a nice, roasted and fruity Black IPA with a good overall balance, although "Wer Hat Die Blaubeeren Geklaut" may have been a more appropriate name here.

Thanks for kicking of the thread this weekend @SawDog505 !

The theme for this weekend is 3 Sheeps. My brother gifted me two variants from the 2021 Wolf release, and while I don't pick up many pastry stouts, I have been looking forward to cracking these open.

3 Sheeps The Wolf - Pistachio, Cocoa Nibs and Vanilla

    Can Notes:
The Wolf. Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout with Single Origin Cocoa Nibs, Pistachios and Vanilla. 12 oz canned 6/15/21 @13:12, 13.6% ABV. Brewed and canned by 3 Sheeps Brewing in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Dominican Republic Cocoa Nibs, Pistachios and Vanilla.

Appearance: Dark brown to black somewhat clear base, tan bubbly head leaves cream ring around the rim and very fine bubble lacing. 4.25

    Aroma:
Light bakers chocolate leads, faint pistachios. 3.75

    Taste:
Much richer and stronger taste profile, rich dark chocolate leads with a strong chocolate fudge profile. Next comes the pistachios which really blends in well here, flavor bold and delicious. The vanilla is noted next, well balanced within the overall taste profile, appreciated as many times vanilla overwhelms in these offerings. Bourbon smooth and stronger as this warms and I delve further in. Overall excellent blend. 4.5

    Mouthfeel:
Faint fizzy carbonation, body medium to full and creamy. Drinks way lighter than the strong ABV, though starting to feel the effects 1/3 of the way in. Nice balance, both between sweet taste profiles and hops and roast malt holding things in check, very clean and easy drinking and finish. 4.25

    Overall:
This is a solid pastry stout by 3 Sheeps, rich taste, well blended, pistachios and cocoa nibs the star early, nice emergence of smooth bourbon as this warms. Very enjoyable, would pick up again in the future as a rare pastry stout excursion based on how well this comes together. Well done 3 Sheeps! 4.5

Have a spicier variant planned for tomorrow. Hope to catch up on the thread later today.

16 oz can poured into a tulip

A- Black with a two finger mocha head.

S- Dark chocolate, roasted malts, earthy hops, hints of citrus, some char.

T- Dark chocolate, roasted malts, piney, earthy, some char, touch of the citra dry hopping.

    M- Smooth, full body.

O- A well done stout and it aged gracefully. I think I got this in a box of beer in 2017 or 2018 and I just forgot to drink it right away but have no issue with what time has done to this beer.

Dirty, brownish-orange body; sparse, wispy head. Pungent, woody aroma; herbal; band-aid. Oak and orange; musty sweetness. Medium-heavy body; tart with a sweet undercurrent.

Nasty orange juice, that's what this tastes like. Not good.

One of the beers from the Extreme Beer Box that I was looking forward to and totally dislike. Old and spoiled orange juice, that's what I should include in my review...

I will say as someone who left a positive review of this that you seem to capture this beer well. I’m not sure what is full going on with it but freshness has a pretty big impact on it. Over the summer I picked up a 2 day old 4-pack at the brewery and drank it all within a week or so because I really enjoyed but I did notice that last can just wasn’t as good as the first one. I wish it held up a little better but most pilsners in SEPA are better and more shelf stable.

Looks nice, thick, black small tan head. Smells great, coffee, Cocoa, vanilla, some maple syrup and a whiff of bourbon. Taste is exactly the same, and that's the problem. Way to sweet, get rid of the coffee and you could pour it over pancakes.

    Cloudwater - MCI Black Forest

Imperial Stout with chocolate, cherry, tonka and vanilla, from England (11%).

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a large, frothy, dark brown, quickly fading head. Smells of slightly roasted, caramel malt, intense, dark, bitter chocolate and tonka bean, as well as lighter cherry and vanilla aromas.

Taste is an excellent balance of slightly roasted, caramel malt and quite rich and dominant dark, bitter chocolate, with distinct, tart cherry notes also coming through, as well as some tonka and vanilla bean, with the tonka standing out particularly, and just a hint of licorice as well. Finishes with a light sweetness and acidity, as well as some dark chocolate, cherry and tonka bean lingering in the aftertaste. Full, luscious mouthfeel with a very rich body and medium carbonation.

I have to say that this really manages to emulate a black forest cake incredibly well with its super-rich dark chocolate character, tart cherry notes and luscious mouthfeel, while it never feels overly sweet or boozy at all and those tonka/vanilla bean accents really add a lot of depth to this. The balance just works out so well here, with the sweet, acidic and slightly roasted and bitter notes being in almost perfect harmony, although I will say that the tart cherry is perhaps just a little too much. Still, this makes for a very rich and well-balanced brew overall that really achieves what it sets out to do incredibly well.
