Art History's Fastenbier, a "Franconian Style Dark Lenten Lager". Smoke forward, but not punishingly so. Starting to really like this brewery...

A little earlier this evening I enjoyed Intuition Citra from Brasserie Ayawan of Val-Morin Québec. This brewery has little presence here in BA. This will be the third beer listed here.

I was excited to get this from a friend from Québec as I’ve heard some good things about their beers.

I’d add a photo, but Postimage isn’t cooperating.

Pours a bright light gold. Hazy. Moderate head with decent retention. Light lacing as the beer is consumed.

The expectations one has from a Citra IPA hit the nose in lovely fashion. Broad array of citrus notes, a little honeydew.

The taste follows. Grapefruit, tangerine, melon. A slightly bitter finish. Nice.

The beer is a tad thin for style. It isn’t off-putting, but is noticeable.

Very enjoyable. I am definitely interested in trying more from Ayawan.

    Cheers.

Next up is the aforementioned 3 Fonteinen - Oude Geuze - Cuvée Armand & Gaston. This beer is a blend of one-, two-, and three-year old traditional lambics, all brewed at Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen. This particular bottle was bottled on September 27, 2018, with a best by date of October 26, 2038.

Pours a cloudy opaque brownish tinged orange color. Very thin, fleeting off-white head appears as the beer is poured, but dissipates almost instantly. The aroma on this is very complex - there is a moderate funkiness on the nose that is immediately noticeable. Notes of tart green apple, white grapes, oak, dirty laundry, and a zippy lemon character.

The taste leans into the funk without as much of the tartness. There are notes of green apples, apple, lemon, some bleu cheese notes, strong oak with some mellow white grapes, wet blanket funkiness and some dry tannic notes. I feel like I get something else every time I take a drink of this beer. At times its funkier, and times it more fruity and tart, then it is drier and leans into that chardonnay like character. The complexity of this is amazingly balanced by a drinkability I have rarely found in these geuzes. I could actually envision drinking this all afternoon rather than just a single glass - although my heartburn would undoubtedly make me regret that. Still, this is a beautiful beer - complex, yet approachable.

The feel is medium bodied with bright, vibrant carbonation. The tartness in this dances up to the point of being puckering without ever actually reaching that point. It is definitely a drier beer especially on the back end into the finish.

Overall its a remarkable beer - delicious, complex, challenging, yet oddly drinkable. A fitting beer to carry the name of Armand Debelder.

    look: 4 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.75 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5 = 4.57 (rDev +1.6%)

RIP Armand. Thank you for sharing your artistry with the world.

    My "last" for the evening
    [IMG]
    Larry's Last
12oz bottled 01/29/22 (35 days ago) poured into a Spiegelau stout glass at fridge temp 10% ABV. The beer pours very dark brown with medium brown colored head. The head recedes to a thin cap and leaves plenty of lacing. The aroma is earthy, slightly sweet with notes of roast and caramel malt. The taste is bittersweet roasted malt with notes of molasses, caramel and earthy bitterness. The mouthfeel is full bodied with just less that average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. No alcohol notes in the aroma or taste. Overall, very good.

I'm a fan. This is a tasty stout. Cheers all!

Another Canadian beer from @Coronaeus! Bourbon Barrel Peche Mortel.

Side note: It has been a *long time* since I twisted a cap off a beer.

341ml bottle served in a footed pilsner glass. Bottled on 2021-01-05.

Pours dark brown/black with a smallish head that fades to basically nothing. Smell is a TON of chocolate, a little boozy, definitely some bourbon / vanilla.

Taste is much more subtle chocolate with a stronger dark roast flavor, maybe a bit of anise. Booze is way more present.

Mouthfeel is thinner than I expected (but not thin by any stretch). Overall, this is really nice.

@WunderLlama is introducing me to Trillium today with DDH Fort Point.

16oz can served in a stemless wineglass. Dated 01/25/22.

Pours super murky whitish yellow with a medium sized head that dissipates into a medium sized ring and a fairly large but thin island of fine bubbles in the center of the glass. Smell...well, for starters I been catching whiffs of it for where I set it, arm's length away (and I have long arms). Smell is gorgeously tropical juicy, pineapple/mango/orange. Lingering resin sense that is difficult to extricate from the tropical juicy stuff.

Taste is much pithier / redolent of fruit skin than the aroma suggests. It's bitter up front, lots of resin, and the tropical juiciness is strong but lurking not-so-subtly in the background.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, dry / drying, slightly gritty. This is a very good beer.

    Hello, Trillium. I'm charmed.

Maple Walnut Ralphius by Free Will

    4.33/5 rDev -0.5%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

Bottle received via trade associated with BIF14 from @JayORear

Brewers notes: this particular Ralphius variant is a blend of one part bourbon maple syrup barrel aged beer and one part bourbon barrel aged beer rested upon 30lbs of toasted walnuts . The combined result is as advertised - reminiscent of chocolate chip pancakes topped with chopped walnuts and doused in fresh maple bourbon

Chilled bottle poured into a snifter , dark brown cola colored liquid capped by a fizzy one finger foam cap

Aroma is maple bourbon walnut, roast malts, coffee

Taste is bourbon sweet maple with a hint of walnut, coffee notes,

Fizzy , light syrupy mouthfeel coats the mouth with a maple bourbon sweetness, walnut taste lingers in the aftertaste

    Good beer, thanks Jay!

    Hello Late Night NBS...
    To know Is To Love

    Another generous offer from @FBarber
    Stamped 2/09/22
The nose absolutely takes front stage before I even take in the appearance. Dang. Guava, kumquat peel, underripe mango, light orange peel, lemon zest, and muted pineapple. Truth be told, I tend to be a bit averse to some of the more pronounced tropical and spice notes of Motueka. This is smooth on the citrus and quite balanced on the tropical.
OK, back to the appearance. Turbid, muted gold, fluffy white head that slowly settles to a thin, milky cap. Great retention, layered cloudy lacing.
Flavor is more of a balance between the citrus and the tropical to start off. But now the herbal spice comes in more. It's warming in the throat. It kind of outshines the lemon notes, lime, mango, guava, and pineapple.
Mouthfeel is medium and a bit fluffy. I love that. But the warming is a tad strong. Finishes a bit peppery and herbal in the bitter range.
Overall, this has some seriously song attributes with a few things that I would prefer a minor adjustment. The nose is amazing, much of the flavor profile is solid, but there is that overly warm herbal spice that I don't love. Still a damn good NEIPA.
    3.96/5 rDev -3.9%
    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

This was quite a pleasant surprise for me with regards to Motueka hops, Frank. Thanks.

'Ello guvna's of NBS!. I had to work this afternoon at the my theatre gig (the local symphony. A 3 movement Chopin piece in (Piano Concerto #3 {I think, I'm really weak in the Classical music area}, but the pianist was awesome) and the second part was a work by Brahms.

I did scoot over to Structures and got a couple new ticks, but, as happens, I went to the store to get stuff for eating, and then stopped at Wander for a couple, and, well.... here we are.

So, technically, I have had new brews today, yet, equally as technically, I can't post in today's thread.

    HOWEVER!!!!

If y'all do not sign up for the current NBS BIF: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/nbs-bif-15-sign-up-thread.665448/ , I pesronally guar-an-damn-tee that Satan Claws will leave Rhino Poop in your stocking this year.

Y'alls chillens and significant others wouldn't want that, would they?
