Howdy NBW applicants. Sunny but a bit chilly this AM here in Far Northeast Kiribati. Dog sat for some friends yesterday while they went to catch the Mariners home opener (an 11-1 squeaker over the Astros), but then got asked if I could cover a shift at the theatre. sure, I can make that work. Got to see Bob Mould do a solo electric set, and the doggos still got walked. Wins for everyone involved!

Starting my beer day with a brew received yesterday (told ya everyone wins!) from @Roy_Hobbs as part of NBS BIF #15, House Lager from Forest & Main. Listed here as a Helles, it doesn't come across very Helles-like to me, but it's still a tasty enough brew to kick off what should be a busy NBS weekend for me:

Clear, dark amber body; nice carbonation; thick, frothy head, off-white color; rocky. Fantastic roasted grain aroma; charred maltiness. Nice taste; lightly sweet malt flavor with dark overtones; nutty; mild to moderate bitterness; a bit of cocoa. Medium-heavy body; slick and silky; fine residual sugar smoothness; overall semi-dryness.

This is a great little dark lager, bringing some nice, balanced elements to your drinking experience.

    -----------------------------------------------

...this is a dandy beer, the type I've been getting into lately - namely a lager/pilsner styling with taste and low ABV...

...Hale's sounds so damn familiar to me, and probably from my time in Tacoma, WA (which would be pre-BA time for me)...my dim memory recalls favorable opinions about their beers back then...

I'm on month 16 of clearing the cellar. Coupled with disciplined restraint regarding new beer purchases, cleared half my net beer stash, and most of my "new to me" beers (453 vs. 218 today).

Also Spring cleaning neglected threads from the past few weeks, been a productive day procrastinating on possibly starting my 2021 taxes before the Monday deadline. :astonished:

Drekker Lemon/Apricot BRAAAAAAAAins Double Fruit Smoothie Sour, 7.1% ABV. Pours thick and opaque medium orange, with a 2.4 finger light-orange head that left puree residue. Nose is lemon, apricot, and vanilla. Taste follows with lemon bright up front, slightly sweet slightly tart, and salt on the close. Nice thick and creamy mouthfeel with jaunty carbonation. Overall very excellent to outstanding adjacent. They did a good job limiting the lemon so it didn't totally bury the apricot. I agree with @gatornation that the head is creamsicle colored, that's the first thing that came to mind.

Maine; there's a meat market near where I work that has a surprisingly solid beer selection. I don't get a lot of Prairie near home, actually.

Cloudwater / The Veil - Chubbles Chubbles

Triple New England IPA with Galaxy, Citra and El Dorado hops, from England (10%).

Pours a hazy, deep orange coloration with a small, fluffy head, Smells of biscuity malt and intense tropical/stone fruit/citrus hops, with notes of passion fruit, mango, peach and grapefruit.

Taste is an excellent balance of biscuity malt and fruity, juicy, slightly dank and bitter hops, with tropical. stone fruit and citrus notes of passion fruit, mango, peach, grapefruit and orange, as well as just a hint of grassy weed. Finishes with a medium/strong bitterness for the style and some passion fruit, peach and orange. Soft, pillowy mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and medium carbonation.

While Cloudwater have always made superb TIPAs, this is perhaps their finest one yet, with an intoxicating tropical passion fruit aroma in the nose and incredibly juicy, vibrant and well-defined tropical, citrus and stone fruit notes on the tongue, finishing with a distinct bitterness for the style, which balances all that sweet juiciness out perfectly and also featuring a great, soft and pilowy mouthfeel.

While this does fall squarely under the fruit salad variety of NEIPA, not usually my favorite, it's just so well done, so vibrant and juicy, while also featuring those zesty, dank and bitter notes to balance out the sweetness, while hardly feeling boozy for the ABV either. Still fantastic at 10 weeks old.

New Beer #2 (yes, I know it's quite late for me  ): Goat Simulator, a fantastically named 7% ABV Doppelbock by Game Craft, and sent my way by @2beerdogs as an unprovoked ninja attack as part of NBS BIF #15.

The Big Flick: This is a very tasty but ultimately plain Doppelbock. It seems that they strove for a clean profile at the expense of the depth and richness of the best German-made (or even American-made) Doppelbocks.

Absolutely nothing to criticize about the appearance; this is a perfect-looking brew.

On the nose and the palate, though ... where's the yeast expression? The nuttiness? The spice? The minerality?

There's some lightly sweet dark fruit notes (raisin and prune), cola, and some dark bread, but ultimately, it's a very sterilized experience - tasty but somewhat boring.

My partner likes Doppelbocks, but didn't enjoy this one at all. I'm not sure why, as I don't taste anything wrong with it; it's just not exciting, and this is a style that I really love.

Drekker Bloody Hell Orange Pale Ale, 5% ABV. Pours opaque bright orange with a nice 3+ finger off-white head that left some lacing. Nose is orange, taste is orange and orange zest, no sweetness, moderate bitterness. Decent mouthfeel with passable carbonation. Overall excellent.

I'm not much of a pale ale fan, mainly since they're typically not very flavorful, and a bit bitter. But scoring this to style, it's an excellent pale ale IMHO.

New Beer #3 is a bit of a surprise, given the disappointment that 2xPerimental was last weekend.

2xHaze comes from the Southern Tier 2xIPA variety pack, and is the second of the three new-to-me beers (technically, new to everyone, since OG 2xIPA is the only non-brand-new beer in the pack, I believe). 2xPerimental had way too much banana yeast expression, and didn't really taste much like an IPA.

    2xHaze completely turns things around.

OK, stylistically, as a NE-style IIPA (or "hazy" IIPA, presuming the two terms are interchangeable, as there's no reason to call your IPA hazy if you're not making a point about style expectations), this one falls a bit short. It completely lacks the soft, pillowy mouthfeel you should expect (but the very lively sting is otherwise welcome given the 8.2% ABV).

But in terms of a hop-forward, juicy IIPA? Yeah, this one delivers.

Tasting notes include mango, passionfruit, lemon drops, tangerine, white bread, cracker, and mild green herbs and dankness, with moderate bitterness.

I really didn't expect to love this one, and to be fair, it isn't world class, but it's damn solid. A very nice evolution on OG 2xIPA.

    Garage - Tails

West Coast IPA with Strata, Simcoe and Mosaic hops, from Spain (6%).

Pours a cloudy, golden amber coloration with a medium, fluffy head and slightly visible carbonation. Smells of biscuity, slightly caramelly malt and citrus/tropical hops, with notes of grapefruit and passion fruit, as well as just a hint of pine.

Taste is a good balance of biscuity, slightly caramelly malt and fruity, herbal, slightly dank and resinous hops, with citrus and tropical notes of grapefruit and passion fruit, as well as hints of herbal weed and pine. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some grapefruit and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

The brewery claims that Strata is a perfect hops for WCIPAs because of the dank, grapefruit notes, but to me a WCIPA is supposed to be bitter and resinous more than anything else and while there is some of that to this, it feels a little half-baked to me overall. Also, Strata is much more about passionfruit than grapefruit to me, maybe Centennial would have been a better fit, or Chinook, for that matter.

I like Strata, but to me that belongs in NEIPAs, not WCIPAs. Anyway, this still makes for a nice, kinda old school IPA with a modern twist from the Strata. Could be more bitter and resinous, but still a welcome change of pace from the endless NEIPAs, with a decent malt backbone as well.

    Whoa baby! :astonished:

    That's a lot of cleaning!!
    LOL!

I submitted my taxes (e-file) a couple of days ago. My wife's comment was: "Why do you always wait until the last minute?" I 'reminded' her that Monday (4/18) was the "last minute" but I just got the look.

    Good luck with your taxes.

    Cheers!

    Good afternoon NBW
I drove over to the bridge to Kentucky last weekend (it's 5 miles) for cheap gas and some Waldo's. I spotted a four pack of Henderson Brewing Company Hefeweizen canned 4/6 and picked them up for my wife. I don't think they distribute outside of Henderson, KY, so they have very few reviews here on BA. I was the first on this particular beer

16oz can poured into a weizen glass at fridge temp 5.1% ABV. The beer pours hazy peach amber in color with off white head. The head recedes to a single layer of tiny bubbles and leaves a few streaks of lacing. The aroma is mild with wheat, bubblegum and mild banana. The taste is semisweet wheat malt with a moderate clove taste and bits of bubblegum and banana trailing into the mildly bitter finish. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with average carbonation and a semi dry finish. Overall, ok. It's a bit watery and has the least wheat feel and taste I've experienced in a Hefe. It is however, an easy drinker and avoids the excess sweetness that sometimes plagues American versions of the style.

Probably won't be back until tomorrow night. Son is home from college and we're cooking dinner for extended family tonight. Cheers all!

Love Thy Neighbor CDA at Hemlock State. First beer from this local brewery.

    On phone, so terse.

Dark reddish brown, slightly translucent. Medium creamy head. Smell is nutty, roasty, resinous.

Taste is roasty and sweet with a nice resin bitter finish. Dark sweet bread notes.

Feels very dry and light. Nice beer! Neat little place. Taking some crowlers home.

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Teku glass canned on 3/20/22. Pours a hazy yellow with a solid finger sticky white head, that leaves thin streaks of lace with nice retention. 4.25

Aroma is cantaloupe, peach, mandarin, mango, and apricot. 4

Taste follows cantaloupe, peach, mandarin, mango, and apricot nicely balanced. 4

Mouthfeel is above average soft gentle carbonation, not sticky or dry, and at 8.7% it goes down very easy. 4.25

Overall worth a shot for sure. These guys get no respect and they brew quality beers for a very reasonable price. 4

This weekends first new beer comes courtesy of BIF #15 from the porch destroyer @ovaltine, this and 23 other amazing beer showed up on my porch this past Monday.

A beautiful day calls for a lager…my first beer, of many to come, from Transient thanks to Mr O…if mrs phisher would name a beer after me this may be it, without the Czech spelling…PS I just asked she said “probably”

    Transient Brewing - Czech Yourself

Pours a very cloudy orange hued straw, nice dense white head. Settles with some lacing and a non see through layer of creamy white.

Hoppy nose, with an almost weed like undertone, I like it. Some floral underneath accompanied by table cracker like snap to it.

Taste follows suit in the hop department, first thing that hits you. Retains its dank component but less so than the nose. There is a pepper like spice that was unexpected but very welcome, just a touch of malty sweetness.

The body is light but it is noticeabley heavy on the hops, i enjoy it in this beer though, just takes a little from its drinkability. Finishes semi dry with a nice sharp lingering bitterness.

This is a tasty hoppy pils, I’m enjoying the extra dose of hops in this one. Thanks for sending my way. Which one to drink next…
